Does a Firewire to USB adapter exist?

Hello:
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post my question, but I'll give it a try.
I own an older Powerbook G4 1ghz 12.1" and I'm trying to transfer videos to it for editing from my Panasonic GV-GS31 mini DV video camera, but the camera only has a mini USB out and according to my Powerbook manual I can only transfer video via Firewire. Is there any way I can transfer my video via some USB-to-Firewire adapter? Any suggestions?
Thanks

FYI devices that convert from USB to firewire do exist, they are expensive and I haven't seen a mac version yet. Just lookup "usb to firewire" in google. You might be ok to learn that most of the usb based camcorders that I have used show up as a file system and allow you to pull the data off that way. You can't control them in iMovie with fast forward rewind controls like you can for the firewire versions but if your just worried about getting the media onto the computer it might be a non issue.

  • Is out there a firewire to usb adapter?

    Hello,
I am looking for a firewire to usb adapter, so I have a third usb port on my macbook pro late 2011. Does it excist?

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out  Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port.  Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive.  Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.

  • Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw?  I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

  • Firewire to usb adapter for macbook air

    Hello,
Just purchased the latest version Macbook Air.  I'd like to transfer video from a Sony video camera w/mini DV tape, into iMovie '11 on the laptop.  Trouble is, I can't use my existing firewire cable as before on the iMac desktop.  There are prior discussions on the forum about this but none current.  Have there been any new developments in the firewire adapter arena for Macbook Air?  Thx.

  • Does the 12 Watt USB adapter hurt the iPad mini's battery in any way?

Hey. I am looking to buy a 12 watt USB power adapter because my iPad mini takes about 8-12 hours to do a full charge with the 5 watt that was included. Does the 12 watt adapter hurt the battery of the iPad mini in any particular way? (i.e. battery life/battery health) Thanks o:

I wouldn't use anything different to the accessories that Apple includes in the packages.

  • Where does one return the usb adapter replacement

I have the box with me and do not know where I should return it.
    http://www.apple.com/support/usbadapter/exchangeprogram/

Mine was delivered by Fedex, with instructions inside to call DHL to pick it up for the return. Well, I don't have DHL service in my area. After calling Applecare 4 different times in one day and spending I don't know how much time on hold, I finally talked to a human, who's expert solution was for me to take it to the post office!!!!! I explained that it had a prepaid DHL sticker on it, he said he didn't know why the Post office wouldn't honor that, or maybe I should call Fedex to come pick it back up, they would probably honor the DHL sticker too? I suggested that I would be near an Apple Store the next weekend and could take it there myself, he put me on hold for another 25-30 mins to check with someone to see if this could work. When he finally came back, he was pretty sure it would, if not they could just have DHL pick it up from them, since they use them anyway. This should not be this hard. I was sold a defective product, give me my better improved product and a simple way to get rid of the one that is going to kill me and my family without me having to make 4 phone calls, be given no real solutions to my problem, and in the end I have to come up with the answer myself.....Wonderful customer service.....

  • Apple USB adapter VS world travel adapter kit!

Firstly, i'm posting this here becausa i didn't find a better place.
Well, I need a wall plug for recharging my ipod and since the price difference between these 2 products is only $10 I started to think which one is the best.
I mean..obviusly the travel kit comes with the charger and many more stuff, and the usb adapter comes all by itself. Does that mean the usb adapter is better in some way?
Could you guys give me hints for choosing between them?
    Thanks!

The travel kit contains the adaptors needed to charge the iPod from international power outlets. The USB adaptor can only charge it from outlets using one pin configuration.

  • Trying to connect to internet via rokair wireless usb adapter

I have a graphite clamshell ibook g3. I got it in 2000 and it did the job for me back then. it was great. In 2005 I upgraded the os to 10.3. now i would just like to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly (to linksys cisco router for comcast) to do simple things online, nothing fancy. rather than pay for an airport card (which it didnt come with) and hub, i just bought a rokair usb adapter. My ibook only has 1 usb port and its indented so the rokair people sent me a 1ft usb 2.0 wire to attach to the adapter. Ive installed the driver for os 10.3 but the computer does not recognize the usb adapter. Its still giving me as "internal modem" and "built-in ethernet" as my only options in the network folder. Is the computer not recognizing the USB 2.0? IS it even possible to upgrade this computer to acknowledge this type of USB?
    Thanks

saltyspicegirl, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your iBook has USB 1.1. That adapter appears to be backward compatible with USB 1.1 so that shouldn't be a problem.
You probably should contact their support to see if they can offer any suggestions.

  • Does a firewire/usb converter exist ?

iMac has no firewire port ?  Need to migrate files from my LaCie-mini external which has no usb port. Does a firewire/usb converter exist ?

    No it doesn't unfortunately.
    Firewire reset, usb reset…
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect all FireWire devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
Reconnect the FireWire device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each FireWire port if you have more than one.

  • Attractive Firewire to USB 2.0 adapter for iMac?

I have a 20" intel iMac. It has 2 Firewire ports on the back that are going unused -- meanwhile I have too many USB 2.0 peripherals and I'm constantly swapping them out (printer, scanner, external hard drive, iPod, cybershot).
I've thought about getting a USB hub to extend the ports, but I really don't want an extra ugly device with a extra power cables and stuff.
Ideally, I'd like an attractive little device that fits right into one or both Firewire ports and converts them into USB 2.0 -- no extra cable, no separate powers supply, and preferably in iMac white.
    Does such a beast exist?

As Rich said, there are no Firewire to USB converters. However, you might consider this Belkin unit for aesthetics: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=199941
It stacks nicely with an Apple Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and it doesn't look bad next to your iMac. I bought one when I had a Mini and I had a nice looking Mini-AEBS-Belkin stack on my desk. Nowadays, I have it stacked below my AEBS next to my iMac and it looks great...

    tyler57,
it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • Hello, I have a Sony GV D300E mini DV editing deck.MY imac latest I7 model does not see it when I plug it in via firewire to usb, any help please.

My iMAC i7 will not see the device, it is from firewire to usb.
    Any help please.

The connection on the player is firewire
    You need the following:
    Apple Thunderbolt - Firewire adapter
4-pin to 9-pin Firewire cable like this one
    No software drivers are needed.
No icon will appear on your Mac desktop when the deck is connected.  You need to use video capture software such as iMovie, Final Cut, etc. in order to "see" and use your Firewire deck. (I believe QuickTime Player will also "see" your deck and allow playback.)   You will probably have to use the manual controls on the deck to control actual playback start & stop.
I have recently bought a cable, firewire one end and USB on the other
Hard to believe there is such a cable.  If there is such a cable, it's a scam.  Firewire and USB are totally different, electrically and protocol-wise.  Even if there is such a cable, it will not work for connecting your miniDV player to a Mac.   miniDV (video) has always been a Firewire-based connection. Sony calls Firewire "i.Link"
