Does a ibook G4 have a clock battery?

I am using the 1.2ghz ibook G4 I bought last May. Does it have a clock battery? Last night I accidently left my ibook's battery out of the unit. Then I came to it today, only to find the date and time reset.
Ths has led me to believe that the ibook lacks a clock battery, or that mine may be dead. Its odd dying so fast. In this case its a good thing I bought the extended warranty.
John

Hi John,
None of the iBooks or PowerBook G4 12" have back up batteries if that is what you are asking. Did you have your computer plugged into the power adapter? You may want to look at Portable Computers: Models Which Do Not Have a Backup Battery.

  • Lenovo 3000 C100: Does it have a clock battery?

She boots up to the bios screen if not kept on AC power, and does not keep the time on battery power.  Sounds like the CMOS battery?I am willing to replace it, but holy cow!!  Can't find it in any manual, the service videos, or any mention online.  Does this laptop have a CMOS battery?  If so where is it located?
    Thanks.

    wrhux,
Apologies for the delayed response - you seem to have asked this question several ways and found the location on your own on another one of your discussion threads.
I would suggest that thehardware maintenance manual would be the best overall source of parts and diagrams for servicing the system.   However, searching through it, I found no reference to the CMOS battery.   I conclude that if soldered as you found in another thread, then it wasn't intended as a user serviceable part, so it wasn't doccumented.
You may be able to match this up visually by doing some google search of CMOS batteries and comparing the cell you have with some of the pics.   The battery voltage should be stamped or printed on the case.

  • Does a 12" PowerBook have a PRAM battery on the logic board?

We got an 867MHz 12" Aluminum PowerBook in today that doesn't seem to want to hold PRAM values any longer than 5 minutes. It doesn't seem to matter if it's plugged in and using the AC adapter as the source or the battery (as long as it's charged, of course ).
I've gone through the typical battery of tests, like removing the Airport, add-on RAM, etc. but the problems persist. To get the item to boot, I've been repeatedly resetting the PMU (shift-option-command + power button) followed by a PRAM reset (option-command-P-R + power button) and eventually it will chime and start to boot. I suspect that I can end up isolating this to a specific set of steps. One of the oddities I've noticed is that when doing this, the power isn't actually off. For example, if I do the PRAM reset, the item will appear to be dead, but if I hit the caps lock key it's clear that the power is still on.
Once the item boots, I can power it on and off, and it will reboot, as long as I don't let it sit any more than 5 minutes. If I let it sit 5 minutes or more, then I need to go through this whole reset game again.
I've seen stuff like this happen on PCs that often have ROM/PROM batteries installed (sometimes removable, sometimes soldered to the board) that retain system settings. There seems to be something that looks like one of these batteries installed on this motherboard, but none of Apple's tech repair manuals reference replacing it, and it almost looks like its welded to a connector, but then again I'm not sure it's even a battery.
So the question is: Does this motherboard have a PRAM battery on it that's failing? If there is one, is there a replacement or replacement kit available, or am I barking up the wrong tree all together?
    Thanks in advance.

From what I can tell, this device uses a "mega capacitor" to maintain the charge on the memory. It looks almost like a battery that I put into one of my old cameras. This capacitor sits between the trackpad and the optical drive. The owner of this system did a DVD upgrade himself and it appears in the process he actually knocked this capacitor off it's base on the mother board. It superficially APPEARS to be connected because there's a bar on the top end of the capacitor soldered to the motherboard that's holding it in place, but the bottom end broke off the motherboard.
The boss of our company theorizes as follows:
    1. The PRAM and NVRAM has a high impedance, and when the mega capacitor is properly connected and without power, the discharge rate based on the RC time constant is very long (probably weeks...maybe months).
    2. When power is turned off it's the duty of this effective RC network to maintain PRAM and NVRAM since the discharge rate is so slow.
    3. With this capacitor busted off, the only capacitance that exists in the circuit is likely that of RF bypass capacitors and any other capacitors that may be used to filter out the supply. Since these are likely much, much lower in value the RC time constant becomes minutes instead of days/weeks/months.
I think this is a good theory for the following reasons:
    1. If the unit sits, powered off, for any amount of time greater than 3-4 minutes and it's powered up, the unit comes on, but the CPU doesn't start processing. The optical media initializes, the caps lock key will light, and if you listen closely to the unit you can hear stuff running....but the CPU doesn't start. The conjecture is that the all PRAM/NVRAM parameters have been lost and when the CPU starts it sees nothing there and hence, does nothing. The unit is actually running, it just doesn't do anything.
    2. If the unit sits, powered off, for any amount of time greater than 3-4 minutes, the following process will allow it to start up:
    a. Turn the power on and leave it on for about 2-3 minutes. This is the dysfunctional state identified above, but what seems to be happening is that the effective RC network is being charged.
    b. After several minutes, turn the unit off and then immediately turn it on.
    c. The unit boots successfully.
    d. We can turn the unit off, and turn it on again, and it will successfully boot as long as we do it relatively quickly (within a minute or two), but if it's left off more than that then the "game" identified in steps a-c must be repeated.
To me this implies the unit relies completely on the "mega-capacitor" to retain voltage on the PRAM/NVRAM. It sort of makes sense because the equivalent impedance of a battery is low compared to that of the RAM chips and it would have the effect of limiting the RC time constant needed for the unit to retain it's PRAM/NVRAM parameters for a very long period of time. That isn't to say the battery isn't supplying anything to the unit when power is off...it may very well be, but I suspect it simply isn't doing it to this circuit.
    Does this theory make sense?

  • Does my iphone 4s have a defective battery and need to be replaced?

I pre-ordered that iphone 4s and got it on friday, released date. When my phone arrived at my front door, the phone was already dead and wouldn't turn on. I have been using the phone for 5 days and the battery life is horrible, worse than my 3gs that is one and a half years old. I have turned off almost every function, location service off, icloud off, siri off, diagnostic off, email manual, setting time zone off, bluetooth off. I only get 3-4 hours of usage and most of the usage is internet browsing on home wifi. I suspect that I have a defective battery since many people's iphone work right out of box and mine was already dead. So is my battery defective? if so, what phone number should I contact for a replacement phone.

there are other threads regarding battery life and the iphone 4 and 4s. You are not the first person to report this issue.  People seem to think it is an IOS5 issue and not a hardware issue though.

  • Why does my iBook not have a file size on the iBookstore?

    Hi everyone,
I apologise if this has already been answered, however, I could not find an answer anywhere. Basically, I submitted a children's iBook (The Tale Of Blob-Ba-Cus) to the iBookstore in June. In the section on the iBookstore where is says author, publisher, category etc. there is no file size listed. My book was created with iBooks Author and I submitted it through iTunes Producer. I never came across a field in the metadata for file size. I just presumed maybe it would appear automatically once submitted. Did I miss something?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Jade.

  • Clock, battery, wifi, etc icons show hourglass

For the last couple of days, the icons at the top right of the screen show an hourglass when I hover the mouse over them, and they are unresponsive. This persists even through a restart. In fact, all icons except Spotlight show the hourglass when I hover over them.
The icons I have are clock, battery, wifi, bluetooth, volume, scripts, time machine and iSync.
The clock doesn't even update itself any more.

Uh... if you are getting an hourglass on Mac OS X, you need to perform some sort of exorcism for evil Windows demons.
But if it's a spinning disc or wristwatch, either do what SteveLamb0 said, or even just try force-quitting the process SystemUIServer so it will reload itself. (You can just reboot your whole Mac if you don't know how to do that.)

  • HT3371 My Macbook Pro does,nt seem to have any life in the battery does it need a new one

My Macbook Pro does,nt seem to have any life in the battery does it need a new one

You can check the actual capcity by opening the "System Information" application in the folder "/Applications/Utilities".
Then you can select the information section "Hardware > Power" to see the information regarding the battery:
The important information is highlighted in the image above.  The ratio of Charge Remaining (when fully charged) to Full Charge Capacity is a good metric of how "healthy" the battery is.  The Number if cycles is another indicator.  The higher the number of cycles the lower I would expect the ratio of Charge Remaining (when fully charged) to Full Charge Capacity.

if you use time machine, you should be able to get it back that way. Although IBA saves changes on an ongoing basis, it doesn't create a back up or supplemental copy elsewhere on your drive.

I don't think that would apply to the Classics.  The store ought to have, for example, a free Chinese language edition of the Art of War, which can be obtained from Project Gutenberg.  But it does not (or I can't find it).

  • Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery gets to 80%?  have installed new battery and nothing changes?

Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery shows 80%.  a couple of months ago is shut down at 60% but has continually gotten worse.  this was before 5.0.  i took it to a repair man and he tried a used battery, a new battery, and the original battery.  nothing helped.  5.01 didnt help either.  What is my problem?

Fully discharge the battery (till it shuts down and won't turn on) and then fully recharge it (100%).  This will recalibrate the battery meter.  You may need to do this a few times.
