Russa, from the KB article you linked notice that those maintenance scripts are no longer invoked by cron. They are invoked by launchd:

The tasks are scheduled for 03:15 to 05:30 in your computer's local time zone. This is described further in "Mac OS X: Unexplained Disk Activity Produced by 'find' Process." These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large in Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier.
Therefore no user intervention is required, unless you are running Mac OS X "Leopard" or earlier.
It may seem overly pedantic to bring this up but this common misconception has a tendency to lead people into believing a Mac requires the user to perform maintenance over and beyond what OS X already accomplishes by default.
As others have written, a Mac takes care of its own housekeeping. It is best to simply let it work as designed.

Charging iPod nano on an Intel iMac during Sleep Mode by Firewire
Hi everybody,
I have a question concerning the iPod nano. I know that you can not sync the iPod by Firewire but you can charge it. I also know that charging the nano via USB during Sleep mode is NOT possible. However I had a 3G IPod (connected by Firewire) and it was possible to charge it when the Imac was in Sleep mode. And here comes my question:
There is a special cable for iPods, which has both Firewire AND USB. Is it possible to connect the IPod simultaneously by Firewire and USB to the Imac with the result, that the nano will charge during sleep mode (Firewire) AND is able the sync music (USB) ???

IMac 2009 (21 inch) making hard drive noises during sleep mode - normal??

I have an iMac 21 inch (2009) , 3ghz C2D, 4GB Ram, 1TB hard drive (the hard drive was upgraded straight thru apple, when i bought it i paid extra for a 1tb hard drive, its not a DIY hard drive upgrade)
aniways, I recently noticed that during sleep mode, occasionally (not all the time) I can hear some faint clicking / hard drive noise, which is really weird because i put the imac in sleep mode and it really shouldnt be doing that no?
My 13 inch macbook pro 2010 never does this in sleep mode, its always dead silent

No it should not be doing anything but sleeping. The SMC controls sleep, try resetting it.
Reset the SMC
• Shut down the computer.
• Detach the computer's power cord.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Reattach the computers power cable.
• Turn on the computer.

I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked

2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
3. Reset the PRAM.
4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.

8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.

Severe battery loss during sleep mode
I have a brand new MBAir and I'm trully intrigued about the loss of batery happening during sleep mode. I've fully charged it on Friday, and, since then it's been on sleep mode. Today, finally turnign it on this night to work a bit, I found it has only 73% of charge! What can be happening? IMPORTANT: My "power nap" mode is OFF since I've bought it and started using and noticing this down charge. Can anyone help me?
I've just solved it all when I noticed I kept plugged in my wireless mouse receptor. Just plug it out before leaving the MBA in sleep mode, and the problem was solved.

Why does my mac mini shutdown during sleep mode?
After I put the Mini into sleep mode, it shuts itself off after a few hours. I tried resetting the SMC per instructions from another forum post (turn the Mini off; pull the power cord for 10 seconds; plug back in; wait 5 seconds; turn the Mini back on) but that didn't work. Anything else I can try?

Hi,
I have a late 2012 MAC MINI that i bought around 3 months ago. Usually my Mac mini is left to sleep/hibernate during the night instead of being shut down. Today morning when i woke up the mini, i saw that a kernel panic had occured.

Thanks in advanceNo. In fact I wouldn't even worry about it unless this becomes a continuous problem. No software on Earth is perfect. There are, however, some tips you might want to consider:
Some of the backtrace appears that you're running VMWare, and quite honestly I don't know what types of bugs might be present in it.
If you're using a third party drive with third party add-ons and drivers, they can sometimes be problematic.
I know Seagate had software that was problematic with Mountain Lion and they're supposedly putting out updates to fix the problems (might already be done for all I know).
A single crash isn't a big deal. If it's crashing periodically, the it's a problem. -
Mac mini crashes often during sleep
I have a mac mini about 6 months old. Everything was great for a while but for the past few months it's been crashing every 1-2 days during sleep (I go to wake it up and it says it restarted after a problem). I have a bunch of crash reports, I'll paste the most recent below...
When it first started I ran apple hardware test which found bad RAM. This was replaced by company but crashes continue (apple hardware test finds nothing wrong now).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Completely uninstalled virtualbox and crashes persist.
I think I had some trouble with my router in the past but have switched to using a TimeCapsule. I will try unplugging from my wired router and go with just wifi next.
If that doesn't work will try the suggestion for a new monitor cable.
After that I'll try replacing RAM with factory RAM again.
...and if that doesn't work Maverics should be out by then and I can do a complete OS reinstall.

Mac Pro shuts down during sleep
My Pro sometimes shuts down during sleep. Nothing will wake the machine and it it not accessible by another other computer on the network. It has to be manually re-started using the button on the back of the computer. There are no error messages on re-start.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM but it makes no difference.
Any ideas?Perhaps some third-party software that you had previously installed needs to be updated to be compatible with the latest OS X updates.

Mac shuts itself down during sleep.
When the Mac goes to sleep, it shuts itself down instead. This occurs when the machine goes to sleep automatically after a period of inactivity, and also occurs if sleep is selected from the Apple menu. Shutdown occurs immediately upon sleep, or sometimes after being asleep for a while.
When the Mac is restarted, no error message appears (the one which says that power was lost unexpectedly, and prompts you to run disk first aid).
The problem occus on most occasions that sleep mode is activated, but not every time.

PowerMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6) mirrored doorsI'm having almost the same problem and I can't figure it out either. I put my computer to sleep and when I wake it up, the screen comes on with my full desktop, but everything is frozen. I can't open anything. I can't even force quit. I get no response from my mouse (other than being able to move it around- sometimes) and everything on the dock is unresponsive. I did disc repair– no problems reported. I repaired disc permissions– a few glitches, but all taken care of and okay. I restarted the computer, put it to sleep and same thing all over. Should I worry?

Why does my Mac wake up after "clicking" sleep with my mouse?
When any user on my iMac tries to "sleep" the computer using the mouse and any "sleep" comand on either the user screen or as a logged in user the computer "re-awakens" by itself. If the power button on the back of the iMac is pressed the computer will go to sleep and stay that way until "awakened" by any normal means (mouse click, keystroke, or turning on a periphial like the printer, which is normal and expected).
Can anyone help explain why "clicking" sleep with the mouse does not allow my computer to stay "sleeping"?Tried another mouse?

Does battery drain during sleep mode?
I've had my MacBook Pro now only about a week. Just wondering about when not using...if its best to completely power off (though then it may get turned on...turned off once or twice later throughout the day) ...or leave the power adaptor on it and put the laptop in sleep mode? Or...what happens when in sleep mode and say the power adaptor is not attached. Does the computer drain the battery much while in sleepmode?
thanks...It's fine to leave it plugged in for normal use. That's what I do, and I suspect many people do as well.
Having said that, Apple does recommend using the battery occasionally:

Open the terminal app. (Applications => Utilities => Terminal)
Copy and paste the following code.
sudo nvram boot-args=""
then restart your mac.
if you will want to stick with the safe boot again use the following code.
sudo nvram boot-args="-x" -
My mac shuts down in prolonged sleep mode "because of a Problem".
If my mac book pro mid 2012 goes to sleep for a prolonged period of time I have to reboot it as hard start and get a message indicating that it shut down because of an problem. How Do I fix this?
I had my mother board tested at a mac shop in Nepal while I was there and it came back as everything being perfect.
It does not always do this though and for short sleeps it never does.
I have had extensive changes done to this mac such as a 16GB Ram upgrade and replacing the hard drive with a 1 T Crucial Hard Drive and removing the DVD Player and adding in a 256 Solid State Drive. So far everything has been working great. Just recently I notice this occuring with the sleep mode so as a result I just shut down the computer fully when I am not near to it or using it. Any advice as to what to look at or try out.godlovestodance,
your Mid 2012 needs 1600 MHz memory modules. Is your currently installed RAM of this variety?
In your current setup, is it your 1 TB HDD or your 256 GB SSD that is in the optical drive bay?
One thing you can try is this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still crash because of an extended sleep?
