Does a secondary SATA drive failure affect the primary drive?

I have two internal drives, and the secondary drive failed. The system would not boot until I removed the secondary drive. Why would the secondary drive failure affect the primary drive?

A severely corrupt directory on any drive can prevent booting from hard drives and even DVD and CDs that otherwise should boot because the system still 'looks' to see if and where other system drives are located.
That can require pulling the drive in order to boot, put it in a Firewire or USB case, and only after the system is up - and maybe Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro launched - connect the drive.
Just one more reason to keep backups of your drives, and multiple boot drives (working backup, test system, emergency only, are good to have).
Why it is failing is another matter, need for a good solid UPS (I was doing an install that takes 45 minutes when we had an outage, probably due to severe weather and strain on the grid). Luckily I have extra runtime.

  • Does rotating an image several times affect the quality?

I'm using a template for a cd sleeve. One half of it is upside down so to work on the other half I have to rotate the image. I will have to rotate the image a hundred times before the project is finished.
Does this affect the quality? If so, any workarounds for me?
    Thank you.

As the previous poster said - use non-destructive transform methods wherever you can. Apart from that, note, that rotating in multiples of 90 degrees does not change the pixels' color and transparency information, as this always coincides with the imaginary rectangular/ square pixel grid and pixels only get re-arranged. Only rotations at different angles will enforce resampling, meaning that in particular edges will be recalculated to keep them visually smooth. Doing this multiple times will result in softening, as the way Photoshop works, it has no knowledge of previous transforms and will apply the full sampling again in a "dumb" manner. Smart objects avoid that limitation, as they concatenate operations, i.e. a rotation of +60 degrees followed by one -20 degrees will be treated as a single 40 degree rotation. Likewise, CS4's canvas rotation, is merely a secondary rotation applied to the screen buffer, not affecting the image itself.

  • Can airport express be used to extend a network that does not use an apple airport as the primary base station.

I have a verizon fios cable modem that incorporates a wireless base station using 802.11n and wep 40 bit security.  I decided that I could improve poor reception by using two airport expresses as range extenders.  I cannot seem to configure them for this function.  When I do a manual setup and choose extend a network, I get a message that says the network cannot be extended.  I have been able to join the network, and I think they would work as clients, but I'm trying to use them in as additonal base stations to extend my network.
The primary base station, and the two airport express units are all within range of each other.
Now that I have the two units (purchased on sale from Apple this past week), the directions in the manual only include instructions for using them as network extenders with a primary basestation that is Apple?  Is this the case?

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your non-AirPort router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
Your only option would be to connect the AX to the Verizon-provided gateway by Ethernet or use Powerline adapters to create a pseudo Ethernet connection between them. A wireless-only connection will not work.

  • TS5376 Does uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes affect the number of authorized computers listed for my account? When I reinstall, is iTunes considering my computer a new authorized device even though it was installed before??

    Hello,
When trying to install the recent iTunes update, I got the Error Message "Program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."  Apple's recommended solution involves the step of uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes on my laptop.  I'm concerned that when I reinstall, iTunes will think it's a new device and use up one of the 5 device authorizations the iTunes accounts allow.  Do I need to do anything in particular to prevent that?  If yes, what should I do?
    Thank you.
    Katya

Actually, I'd use the following user tip rather than the Apple document as a guide. (At the time I'm writing this reply, the user tip is much better organised, more accurate and way more up to date that the Apple document.)
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the normal course of events, and uninstall/reinstall doesn't affect your number of authorisations on a computer. Usually, it requires a serious hardware change (like a new hard drive or motherboard), or a BIOS update, or an upgrade to a different Windows operating system to confuse your iTunes and make it think that it is now installed on a different computer before you end up using extra authorisations for the same operating system for the same computer. (So if you ever have to do things like major hardware changes, or BIOS updates on the computer, deauthorise the PC first, and then reauthorise after the change has been carried out.)

  • [SOLVED] Very strange P43 Neo-F + sata drive problem in vista...

Well I'd been running Windows 7 flawlessly apart from a few non-related motherboard problems, so I decided to install Vista.
Basically my main OS drive (sata) is always detected, but then occasionally (more often than not) my secondary sata drives will simply not be listed in device manager once the system is booted up. Now, I've seen this problem before, and it was sorted by right clicking 'my computer' going to 'manage' and setting the drives up to be detected. But this simply isn't the case here. They don't appear anywhere!
It sometimes sorts itself out once I click 'Scan for hardware changes' in device manager and they magically appear as if ive just plugged in a USB device, which is fine I guess...but each time it swaps the damn drive letters around! So having media library's in Winamp, etc or putting a shortcut toolbar to my music on the taskbar is all but pointless!
All of my hardware apart from Bluetooth has drivers installed for it, and nothing seems to be conflicting at all. Does anyone have any idea why this is
happening? because in all my years of computing I've never seen something as strange as this...
As far as I  know I have the latest Intel INF drivers installed (9.0.0.1011)
    This is the board: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148024

I can't see how it'd be PSU because Win7 was just fine...but here it is...
    PSU: OCZ XStream 600W PSU
    100~240Vac 10-5A 50/60Hz
    +3.3V(36A), +5V(30A), +12V1(18A), +12V2(18A), +12V3(18A), +12V4(18A)
    Specs:
    Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz
    4GB Corsair RAM + 2GB OCZ RAM
    nVidia GeForce 9600 GT
    MSI P43 Neo-F
Not detected (at Vista startup) drives:
    Hitachi HDP725050GLA360
    ST3320620AS
(they show up perfectly fine in DOS, but I remember only the drive below appeared during Vista setup drive options...)
    Detected Primary OS drive:
    WDC WD800JD-00LUA0
My drives in BIOS are set to IDE mode (which has always been fine for me in the past). I set it to AHCI Mode to check if it boots but it just sticks on the same screen (flashing underscore). I'm sure it's driver related but I'm totally out of options now...you'd think installing the ones provided on the MSI site would get it working... :/
Another thing is under 'Storage Controllers' in device manager, there is only an IDE Controller. I'm sure there should be a SATA one there, too?

  • K8MM-V - how to get sata drive working in bios

    Hi,
I've attached a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160GB sata drive to the pc now. On chip SATA is enabled. I get a message at staet up that I should press tab to enter setup. I do that.. Then I get a message that I only have one sata drive and therefore cannot create RAID. There are other options but I cannot enter anyof them (the create / delete array stuff on the left is dark blue). I can't even view status, or confirm any choice (or select any choice). It does show my sata drive below on Serial_CH0. But there is no array name (as I haven't been able to create one). Do I have to set the drive jumper settings or something? I don't know what's going on.. Also.. I ran the maxtor tools cd.. it didn't pick up the drive. Someone please help.
    Thanks,

HD: Maxtor Diamondmax 80GB 7200rpm, Maxtor Diamondmax plus 9 160 GB SATA
    Lieton DVD Rom

You don't need to define an array, just install windows on it (use the driver disk too)
With 1 drive connected, it's working like a normal SATA controller.
I have the same here, you don't need to configure anything.
Except for maybe the boot-order in the BIOS, mine has two types of orders.
For the Harddisk you should have something like:
    1st Floppy -> 2nd CDrom -> 3th HD-0 or IDE-0 (whatever try call it in there)
Then you look at the Harddisk Boot priority, where is should say something like Sata-disk and second addin-card.
Not sure if your BIOS is the same, but that's how it works here.
Basicaly, if you have no PATA IDE drive's connected it should work by just connecting the drive.
And yes, the BIOS will continiu to mention there is no raid, don't bother about that as a single drive can't be a raid.

  • Fresh Windows XP Install SATA Driver Error

I'm trying to install WinXP on a new SATA Maxtor 120GB drive, and get the following error after pressing F6 and specifying the additional device:
"File TXTSETUP.OEM caused an unexpected error (1024) in line 1742 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."
The drive is on the ICH5 SATA controller in the first position.  It is recognized by the BIOS correctly, along with the combo drive on the P-ATA controller.
    Any suggestions???

I really don't know the ICH5 well enough to determine if there is an optimal reason why you select the PATA only or the SATA only to match the primary boot device. In the boot sequence you can boot in whatever order you want, and with the F11 key you can boot off whatever device you want. Whatever works is usually OK, but when things don't work, try the right way at least once

  • VDI3: what happens when the Primary VDI core fails?

A potential customer asked me this and I did not really know how to answer the question ... sorry if this was asked before. So here we go:
What happens when and if the Primary VDI core fails? Will the entire VDI3 setup go down? Will running sessions be lost? And how do you fix that?
    I found this page:
    http://wikis.sun.com/display/VDI3/MySQL+Cluster+Reconfiguration+Scenarios
So I assume the "Non-VDI host ==> Primary Management Host" scenario is what would need to be done?
    http://wikis.sun.com/display/VDI3/MySQL+Cluster+Reconfiguration+Scenarios#MySQLClusterReconfigurationScenarios-NonVdiToPrimary
If this is correct then this would answer the "how do you fix that?" part. OK then.
But still I'd welcome if anyone could explain what exactly would happen when and if a Primary VDI core fails. The customer's opinion on this is that they are a "single point of failure" because the Primary VDI host is not redundant (as opposed to the 2 x Secondary VDI cores) ... So, is this assumption correct or not?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Assuming you have 3 VDI core hosts. One of them is the primary. And the primary goes down. So what happens then:
    * The underlying database is still running on the remaining hosts
    * All desktop sessions are still running on the remaining hosts
    * New session requests will be handled by the remaining hosts.
    * All desktops are still running on the virtualization hosts.
So in essence, your VDI cluster is still healthy. The operation is just impacted in this way:
    * You can't add new VDI core hosts
    * You can't change the configuration of the Sun Ray server failover group
    * A failure of another VDI core host (data node) will result into a complete outage of the underlying database
You should bring up the primary again as soon as possible in order to gain failover capabilities again.

  • Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive

Is it possible to boot windows solely from an external hard drive so that it does not affect the internal drive. I already know that you can partition the internal hard drive to do the very same. Idon't want to use any of the internal space to run windows so I'm asking if it is possible to use a flash drive or external drive through USB to run windows when it is plugged in.

  • Windows 8 does not remember secondary SATA hard drive letter

So, I bought an HP Pavilion with a 1TB HDD with Windows 8 installed. I burned the recovery disks, wiped the 1TB (Seagate) drive and installed a 250GB (WD) drive. I installed the WD as the primary boot and OS, and formatted the Seagate as a basic drive for
storage. I reinstalled from the recovery disks, and the OS went exactly where I wanted it to, but the Seagate doesn't list in the My Computer display. It does appear in the BIOS, and it does appear in Disk Management.
I searched the internet and found the tips about using Disk Management to assign a drive letter to the second drive. SUCCESS! Or so I thought. I can see the second disk in disk management, and can successfully assign a drive letter so that the drive appears
in My Computer; but after any/every reboot, I have to go through the same process over and over and over again. Windows 8 is not "remembering" the drive letter settings for this particular drive.
It doesn't seem like a big deal, but this drive is intended as a shared drive for the "Homegroup" so that everybody can use it as storage. Not everybody in the small office is familiar or comfortable with going through this, so I need the system
to "remember" the disk settings all of the time.
The 1TB Seagate has the following properties:
    Disk type - Basic
    Partition style - MBR
    File system - NTFS
Does anyone have any ideas? Suggestions?
    Thank you!

    Hi alcisco70,
The drive letter miss after restarting the computer, right?
I would like to suggest you update its driver firstly, and then do the following:
open a command prompt with administrator privileges, then type:
    Diskpart
List disk (you will get detail disk info, if you only have one disk, it will show disk 0)
    Select disk 0
List volume (you will get detail volume info)
Select volume # (change # to corresponding number)
    then enter:
    attributes volume clear hidden
After that, restart the computer and reassign the drive letter to that volume. And navigate to the path below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\VolumeInfoCache
Which lists all the current drive info.  check if there is any conflict.

  • Does any windows service affects the device driver wake up time?

Is it possible for a windows service running on Win 8.1 (64 bit) to delay the wake up time of any device driver?
One possibility could be where the driver has any dependency on any other driver/service.
In this case, I checked the driver's INF file and there is no dependency section.
The driver start up type is service_demand_start and driver type is kernel driver.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Are you asking if a service can impact when the driver is started or when it is woken up after hibernation?  For a demand start driver they start when they are needed so depending on the driver yes it could only be started after the service does an
action.  You have eliminated the dependency section, but is the driver for actual hardware?  If yes then it is highly unlikely the service can impact it.  If no, then the service could be the starting it with StartService, or forcing its enumeration
    and starting.
If you are talking the hibernation case, no there is impact.

  • Secondary SATA hard drive doesn't show up in J115

I've a Lenovo J115 738726u which is installed Windows XP. I installed a secondary SATA hard drive (Western Digital WDBAAX3200ENC-NRSN). The new installed HDD is not shown up as hard disk in file explorer. But In control panel->system->device manager, I'm able to see the new hard disk in the 'Disk Drive'.
Does anyone has idea what's required to solve the problem?
    Thanks a lot.

Good day and welcome to the community.
If I'm not mistaken, you'll need to create a partition on the drive before Windows Explorer will see it. You can create a partition from within Disk Management. Right-click My Computer and select Manage from the pop-up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Added Hybrid SATA drive to ThinkCentre - does not recognize old IDE drive - Suggestions?

I added a 1TB Seagate Hybrid drive to my old ThinkCentre 808532U.  I removed the jumper from the old IDE drive so it would be considered the secondary.  I installed Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on the hybrid SATA.  The old IDE had Windows XP.  I want to use the old IDE drive as the secondary so I can access the data, pictures, etc.  I do NOT want to boot XP. The system boots up fine with Windows 7.  However, the system does not recognize the old IDE drive.  I have gone into BIOS and changed the Parallel ATA to Secondary.  The system still does not recognize the old IDE drive.   Can someone provide recommendations? Thanks,Napp

I finally experimented enough that I found the solution!  I tried putting all the IDE drives into Startup even though none showed any hardware assigned.  I set Parallel ATA to Both.  My machine  would start up but not show the Logo screen or any screen for that matter.  I put a Windows 7 install disk into the DVD ROM and got the Logo screen.  I F1'd back into BIOS and suddenly two of the IDE entries in Startup were populated with the DVD drives.  I set the order I wanted in Startup and saved the configuration.  When Windows started it installed drivers for two devices.  I looked into Computer and all the drives were listed!!!!!!!!!!!   So now after several long nights I have my system configured properly for all the drives and all Windows 7 updates applied.  I am waiting for delivery of a 256M graphics adapter and a gigabit ethernet adapter to see if I can increase performance.  Time to sleep now..............
