Does adding captions to existing JPEGs degrade image?

Using Photshop Elements 5.0, when I open an existing JPEG file and add a caption, the file's date stamp is changed to the current date, even if I don't actually edit the image.
I know that opening, editing and then resaving an existing JPEG file causes the image quality to degrade each time this process is repeated, since the JPEG format format uses lossy compression. I'm wondering if adding a caption does the same thing, i.e., causes the image quality to degrade.
Is adding a caption equivalent to editing the file, even if the actual graphic image isn't altered at the same time? Does adding captions to JPEG files after the fact cause image quality loss?

No, adding a caption -- or a date/time, keyword tag, star rating, notes, or GPS location -- updates the file's metadata section without changing the actual photo. (That metadata is sometimes loosely referred to as EXIF, XMP, or IPTC.) So you don't need to worry about loss of image quality due to recompression.

    HI,
I am using photoshop cs5 and after effects cs5.
does after effects cs5 support jpeg 2000 images?
if not, then  do we have something like encoder or decoder or plugin to make this thing work?

I run AE 8 at work, and I have absolutely no problem with Jpeg 2000 stuff.  I don't see why you would on AE 10.
And if you don't have it already, go download the latest version of Quicktime 7.  Don't get Quicktime 10 or X or whatever they call it: it's a train wreck ready to happen.  If you steel yourself to spend an extra 35 bucks, you can get Quicktime Pro, probably one of the most versatile little pieces of software available.

  • HOW CAN I PUT A PERMANENT CAPTION ON A JPEG IMAGE?

I have Elements 8 operating (successfully!) with Windows 7.  How can I put a caption on the Jpeg that will actually appear on the photo and will show on a print?  I would like the caption to run along the bottom of the image.  I believe that using the "Title" feature in Pre Elements will not imprint itself on the jpeg file image.  Am I right?

    Hi,
Use the text tool.  Make a box in the approximate location you wnt the caption, choose a font and size, and type the caption into the box.  You can then use the move tool to fine-tune and adjust the location.  When satisfied, you can flatten and save the image.  Hope this helps.

  • When Adding Caption Images

Hey, this is pretty strange problem:
    * When caption is added to an image or table, the image/table can't be seen in the iPad preview.
    * Image galleries work though
    * When image/table is without caption is shows just fine
I have created a 200+ pages book (but also tried to display images/tables with smaller files) and I am afraid this was all for nothing. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

the caption is just the standard caption "lorem ipsum..."
i am using a standard template, including standard font type. actually, the caption is displayed, only the image isn't (neither if it is a table).

  • New to using Firefox with MAC: How does one save a single jpeg image from the web (as in a right click on a pc?)

New to using Firefox with MAC: How does one save a single jpeg from the internet, similar to using the right mouse click on a pc?

If your question comes about because you have a single button mouse, it's time to visit your local computer store and get a ''real'' mouse for that MAC. I don't "get" Apple, they sell their hardware for almost twice what a comparable PC would sell for - and then they leave out what is probably the most important time saving control, the right-button.
See this for setting the hidden pref for context menus in Firefox, for Mac's.

type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and hit Enter

My iPhoto library has suddenly disappeared from my computer.
When i click on iPhoto it tells me to choose my library or create a new one. However no library option appears. I have searched the computer for the library but it does not seem to exist anymore. I did not have time machine set up, so there is no back up. Is there any way i can retrieve my library?
Here is a picture of what appears when i click on iPhoto:

In terms of searching i have searched for photos on my finder. However, none of the photos that appear are from my iPhoto Library.
Search with FindAnyFile. You can download it here:   http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
Search for any file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the name. If you added at least one image to your library, the library should contain a file with this name, see OldToad's post: Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?

  • JPEG - maintaining image quality

Do JPEG images degrade each time that you them in photoshop, change the color space and save them.
Example: I receive a JPEG orignal file, change the size of the image and rename the original and save-as. A month later I open this new file and convert it to CMYK. Has the quality of the image degraded with these changes?
I will be using the images for large format printing and want the best quality.

A jpeg degrades every time it is resaved, yes. It makes no difference what you do before the save, it's the save itself that does the damage.
You can usually get away with one or two resaves, but it's good practice to avoid it altogether. If you receive a jpeg, resave it to tiff or psd immediately.
    Edit: cross post

  • How can I create a jpeg thumbnail image?

I'd like to create a clear jpeg thumbnail image of the first page of a document created in InDesign.  It will be used in Constant Contact as a link to the online version of the document.  (Constant Contact doesn't take JPEG's)
I especially need help making it crisp and clear.
    Thank you!

And there will be occasions when it's not better, and there are alternative ways to get better results.
You may not have tested every situation and font, but I've done enough to know that sometimes it doesn't work as expected. And it wasn't a "challenge", it was an observation.
Here's 3 ways to make a JPEG - and the one that is the best is the one that was exported to PDF and then opened in Photoshop and then Saved as a JPEG.
    .........Direct Export .........................Export PDF................................Export PDF
.....to JPEG.from ID.....................Open in Photoshop.............Save to JPEG from Acrobat.
(EDIT - The forum is adding extra compression to the images - I assure you the middle image is the best)

  • Is it possible to set up a form with a submit button where the data in the fields gets added to an existing excel file, just like 'collect response' but without connecting to the internet?

I have a form that I want to use to collect peoples information with a submit button. I am trying to get the data that gets inserted to be added to an existing excel doc when the submit button gets hit, the form then resets and someone else can fill in the same form, hit submit and his data gets added to the existing data in the same excel doc. It is basically the same as the 'collecting response' option but without having to be online. The form is going to be used at a boat-show and I am going to get people to fill it out on an iPad. Does anybody know if this is possible?

You could connect a bunch of 3700s to each computer and do this .
Or...since you're the one who monitors the monthly limit, you could restrict an individual's internet access once you see that you guys are coming too close to the cap.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help.

  • Please add support for JPEG Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF)

It seems that now Adobe® Illustrator® can export only to the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF). We should have an option to produce the JPEG Exchangeable image file format (EXIF) as well (just like Photoshop does!). Why this is so important to me? I generally work under Illustrator and I often post my work on Behence. I work with 'sRGB IEC61966-2.1' color profile. When publishing I use *.jpg with embedded ICC Color Profile. But it looks like Behence doesn’t fully support the JPEG JFIF – for example it cannot read its icc data correctly. The effect is that my work looses its quality! The only option to produce the JPEG EXIF I have now is to: Export *.ai file to JPEG (under Adobe Illustrator) > go to Photoshop > Create new project > Paste the *.jpg > and Sava As JPEG with icc embedded. This guarantees my files are being processed correctly.
(JPEG) Formally, the EXIF and JFIF standards are incompatible. This is because both specify that their particular application segment (APP0 for JFIF, APP1 for Exif) must be the first in the image file. In practice, many programs and digital cameras produce files with both application segments included. This will not affect the image decoding for most decoders, but poorly designed JFIF or Exif parsers may not recognize the file properly. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_File_Interchange_Format#Exif_comparison )

  • Substitution not carried out when WBS is added to an existing project......

Hi, I have created a substitution rule to substitute the investment profile in my projects with a blank for any WBS which is not level one.   I am not sure why this rule does not take effect immediately a new WBS is included.  When I try to carry out the substitution manually, I get the error message 'Error when processing asset under construction (AuC) for WBS element'. Any ideas how I can get this substituion to work when a new WBS is added to an existing project?

You should use the substitution otherway....
I believe your project is in REL status and also you have defaulted IM profile in the project, so whenever you create a WBSE, the IM profile is inherited to the WBSE and since it is in REL status, the system will create an AUC based on your IM profile and now you are using substituition to remove the IM profile so this will cause the problem...Instead of this....try this...do not default IM profile in project, and instead of removing IM profile for all WBSE which is not level 1, use substitution to write IM profile in WBSE which is only level 1.

  • Is there a practical size limit on JPEG format image files?

I have noticed when working with Photoshop v7.0 on Windows XP that, when creating a JPEG format image file from a very large scanned image (more than 800 Mb, maybe), the .jpg file will usually be saved on disk at any of the possible compression ratios available, without any reported error, yet when the saved file is re-opened, an error is reported - something along the lines of "missing or corrupted end of file marker" - and the image cannot be loaded.
If before saving the original image is substantially reduced in size, e.g. by reducing the resolution of the image, a viable JPEG format file can be created, which will subsequently load successfully, though technically with data loss.
This appears to happen only with JPEG format files - PDF format files can be saved from the original image at similar JPEG compression ratios, without error on reloading.
I do not know if this also occurs with any other Photoshop versions.  I am working with Adobe Photoshop v7.0 on Windows XP, although we are preparing to upgrade to CS (which version I don't know) in the near future, for different reasons to those which are detailed above.
Does anyone know if there is a technical explanation for this behaviour?  Is there a file size limit for writing viable JPEG files (which Photoshop does not report as an error when exceeded)?
    Thanks

that's what I gathered from "JPEG cannot [...] in Photoshop (code difficult to replace)".
But if you say this is in the works right now, that's good news indeed.

  • Some of Photo (JPEG)-compressed images by Flash Pro are not shown in AIR app (3.7/3.8)

Does anyone see this issue happening? In Flash Pro it's OK, but in AIR, it's broken.
    https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3558175
    Problem Description:
Some JPEG-compressed images in swc produced by Flash Pro CS6 is not shown in AIR.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Create a fla with Flash Pro CS6
    2. Put a png image in it and open the property of the image to make sure its compression option is Photo (JPEG)
    3. Produce an swc out of the fla
    4. Create an AIR app that shows the contents in the swc
    Actual Result:
    All images are shown
    Expected Result:
Some of the images are not shown (nothing is shown where they are supposed to be)
    Any Workarounds:
Use Lossless (PNG/GIF) for all images

i was able to get it to work from a suggestion in another thread: if you write a JSFL that goes through all your bitmaps and makes sure they do not uset he default compression of the document, but instead use custom compression (it can match the default however). this worked for me

  • IPhoto iPhone app... degrading image when saved?

Having the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and using the camera app that apple includes degrades the resolution size when after you take a picture THEN use EDIT and apply auto correct.
When you save the image the fine becomes NOT full resolution for some reason?
When shot using the "iPhone 4" for starters the shot image and saved is 1936x2592 px (5MP)
If you EDIT the picture after shooting it using the Apple supplied app and save the image the size NOW becomes 1529x2048 px (3MP)
I have purchased iPhoto app and in using it find the same loss in resolution when editing a image and saving it, you get the same loss in size and resolution in your camera roll when you check size.
WHAT is going on here Apple?
I have MANY iPhotography apps and have NEVER seen that happen UNLESS they are free or what ever so from what I can tell Apple takes the image at FULL resolution, but when you EDIT the image using THERE camera app or now the just released iPhoto app ($4.99) you end up with NON full resolution images.
ANYONE have a explanation of why and how to get a full resolution shot to stay that way if edited with Apple camera app or iPhoto app, were is the menu to turn that off?
When having Location Services on... Saving from the Photo app, after using the edit buttion DOES save the image at full resolution but in iPhoto app is DOES not and always see the degrade of the image to 1529x2048 px (3MP) every time... What is going on here and can be confirmed after many times testing this.
Maybe NOT using those products might be the way to go. The iPhoto app is generic at best anyways so it's no loss in what it does and WAITING to see a full review here soon hopefully.
    Looking for your comments.
    Thanks.

Yeah my point is though... Its like a console. I have a game that I have played on my console 3 years ago. I have a saved game half way through and now I want to continue that game... Unfortunately because i turned the game off despite saving it - it hasn't actually saved?
Surely when itunes syncs your game data across it should sync the current saved game that you have with it?
If thats not the case and Apple expect you to restart a game everytime you take it off your phone and put it back on it surely your to expect people to get annoyed with it? surely im not the only person that has noticed and become annoyed with it.
