Does adding RAM really help performance?

My iMac 1.8 GHz G5 is about two years old and starting to run slowly. Could it be the 10,000 photos and 6,000 songs? I've started using my MacBook for most work and my iMac for most play (i.e. media).
Does adding RAM really help performance? I've only got one 512 MB chip.
Thanks for any help.

Hello,
Yes, adding more memory can make a huge performance improvement.
I've owned two iMac G5 systems. And, in both cases, I noticed a huge performance improvement jumping to 1 GB of RAM. And, while not huge, I noticed even better performance going from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM.
512 MB is minimal, and adequate. But, more memory makes OS X run considerably better.
I hope this helps.

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Does adding RAM help increase my laptop speed significantly?

I have a 667MHz Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM. It's getting really slow lately, especially after installing MacOS 10.4 and Adobe CS2.
I tried not to open too many programs at a time, but it doesn't seem to help much.
Does anybody have the same problem with the newer Powerbook or Macbook Pro? I'm wondering if I need a new laptop, or just an extra RAM.

Although adding RAM may increase speed a little running some routine system maintenance will certainly speed up things much more radically: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

  • Does adding RAM help solve iMovie4 jerky playback

I have been reading threads about jerky playback in iMovie4 in large projects, after adding music from iTunes etc. My wife has a monster project and playback during editing has became very eratic. I have emptied cache, repaired the hard drive, repaired permissions etc. I have not tossed iMovie preferences. I have 23 gigs of space on the HD and a 250gig external FW HD that I bought after she started the project on the internal HD. I would like to know from you experts: 1. Would it help to move the project to the larger external HD? 2. Would adding RAM help (currently iMac G5 1.8mhz with 768 megs RAM)? 3. Is there any way to tell if the project will export to iDVD smoothly if it continues to look terrible in iMovie playback? I hate to go through a few hours of rendering for nothing. Thanks so much for your help. I always find good and useful info in discussions.

Michael, there are some very useful applications that I highly recommend to keep your Mac running smoothly. As a defragmenter I use Allsoft's Disk Warrior that also has a very good directory repair feature. Check out also Drive Genius that has a host of useful features. Also get iMovie file fixers, invaluable tool that is free that will allow iMovie to import certain files in audio and photo formats that are greyed out and also has other features. I believe I got mine from Mr. Lennart Thelander in previous posts here. Cache Out is an excellent application to clear out cache files. I also advise you do a regular permission repair from Disk Utility in your Utilities folder that is on your Mac. These are basically my must have applications. As for copying your iMovie project to your external, just drag your entire project folder ( the blue one with the media and star folder(s) in it directly in the external hard drive. I find that iMovie is one application that requires a clean (defragmented) drive with ample space to spare. I defrag my drives if I trash files often from them, or if I notice erratic and jerky performance or slowness in response. I hope that some of my suggestions will help your in your editing.

  • Does thread pool really help

    Friends,
I wanted your opinion on whether thread pools really help. Some people are of the opinion that thread pools don't really make much difference. On what basis should I make a decision whether to go for a pool or not? Is the reason that I want to limit the number of threads spawned a valid reason for pooling or it depends on the fact that for how much duration each of the threads is going to remain busy?
    Can anyone please comment?
    Thanks,

I have run into a similar question.
The answer is, as usual, "it depends".
One delegates work to worker thread if things to be done are too long to wait for completion. This is a true sentence.
I have found that it is worth to use pool of worker threads if I need to spawn multiple, but not concurently accessing resources, lengthy tasks which should not wait for each other.
That applies to threads. It provides no basis for pools.
If tasks are to access same resource there is no point in getting a separate thread for each of them. One may get into many deadlocking troubles.
Not sure what you mean by that. If you are actually deadlocking on a single resource then you are doing something weird. Deadlocks result due to multiple resources (and incorrect access).
Blocking on the other hand occurs with a single resource. Obviously if a single resource is used exclusively or primarily in thread processing then either don't use threads or re-arch to split it up.
Worker thread/pool is usually an application wide resource where one does throw "things to be done in background" or "things which can't hold current thread code flow".
Threads, pooled or not, can be the primary focus of the application. I would suppose that when someone considers using a pool that in fact in almost all cases the work tasks to be done are either the primary or a substantial part of the processing.

  • Does more RAM really speed up internet use??

I have an internet connection of medium speed and use my IMac for very basic uses: Google search, email, and general internet page viewing. Lately, it seems that pages load in 4-6 seconds completely and I see the dreaded spinning ball too often. I otherwise just use the basic Mac software provided, ie, IPhoto, ITunes, etc. Would adding more RAM help NOTICABLY the speed of loading pages??

Do you every empty your browser's cache? It's a good idea to do that daily, and also to close the browser and reopen it periodically. Browsers tend to eat CPU and can end up hogging most of it when they're been running for a while.
512 is about the minimum RAM yoo can get away with, adding another GB would speed things up noticeably. Make sure you get a lifetime warranty with the new memory, a good place to look is [macsales.com].

  • Does increasing RAM affect battery performance?

I have a question about increasing the amount of RAM in a MacBook Pro (latest model unibody 15" i7 processor).
If I increase the amount of RAM in this laptop from 4Gb to16 Gb, should that in and of itself result in a decrease in battery performance? This is assuming no increase in number of active programs, etc.
A friend of mine was told by an Apple employee that just increasing the total RAM in a laptop would result in the battery draining more quickly. I am no computer genius, but that does not sound right to me? After all, why should the battery work harder if the excess RAM is not being used at the time.
    Any input would be welcomed.

I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with a 250GB hard drive that is almost 80% full. The "genius" told me the excruciatingly slow downs were due to a too full hard drive, but didn't mention memory. I remembered later that I had never upgraded from the original 4GB RAM. This is the only computer around that era that will take 16GB RAM, so I decided to max it out three days ago. Performance has increased dramatically, but battery life has halved. The original battery was giving me about seven hours, now only about three or four. Right this minute the only open apps are Safari and the activity monitor, and my total memory usage is 6.76GB. The top three users of memory are

Parent process of kernal task is kernal task (0), parent process of MediaLib and IconSvc is launchd (1). Note, those three together use more than one-third of the original 4GB RAM. The hard drive was constantly being used for virtual RAM until I upgraded. Try opening iMovie under those consitions and you will see a lot of spinning lollipop. I would hardly call opening Safari and iMovie together overusage. I think anyone should upgrade and to the maximum, but I think it will definitely affect battery life. • Does turning off 3G really help call reception/signal strength ?

After experiencing more of the S.O.S. with the 2.1 upgrade I turned 3G off today.
It's really ******* me off that I am paying another $15 - $20 a month for something that seems useless and problematic (And now just to turn it off).
Does this really help with the issue pertaining to dropped calls ?

    Hi guys
Hope you don't mind me dropping in, but I work in the telco industry, albeit in Australia. The turning off of 3G for better reception isn't an iPhone fault, it's a network thing.
Any phone with 3G capability is programmed to try and access the 3G side of the network first. It will continue to scan the network all day and night, anytime your phone is on to maintain signal. If it's unable to maintain service coverage with 3G, it then drops down to 2.5G, then 2G, then EDGE (if available in your area). If you turn 3G access off, it skips that step. The older networks are more reliable, but slower. They are also (now) much less crowded with users so there is less congestion and you get (on occasions) better signal.
The recent 2.1 upgrade would have modified the supply of power from the chipsets to the antenna's which is why many people are experiencing better signal strength and less dropouts, but it will always come back to the 3G coverage in your area.
I know this doesn't really improve things for you, but gives you some background to how the whole circus works.
    Cheers
    Russ

  • Does DB compact help performance

We have DB where there have been heavy create/delete and read traffic. The DB XML stores around 1.4 million xml documents around 4/8k in size.
The DB XML file has grown to be around 24 gigs.
I understand this is a DB forum but the question seems generic.. given that the DB is a sparse file.. does DB compacting help performance?
We are seeing latency times raise up quite high periodically (potentially correlated with checkpointing).
What kind of information should we collect from the running environment to help deduct the impact of checkpointing on such a DB file?

Using DB->compact can help the performance of any database that has been heavily updated. It will attempt to move data to a smaller number of pages in the database. This will make database page cache more efficient. DB->compact may be run while other activities are happening in the database but it is a heavy weight operation, reading all of the database and updating many pages, so it is recommended that it be used at a time when you have less other activity.
A checkpoint will schedule all dirty pages in the cache to be written to disk. This can certainly slow things down if you have many dirty pages. Using the utility db_stat -m will show you the activity in the page cache. It does not directly show you the impact of a checkpoint but will tell you how many pages have been written to disk. You can use db_stat -mZ to reset the statistics prior to a checkpoint to see more clearly what happens during the checkpoint.
To spread out the effect of the checkpoint you can run a trickle thread (see http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/api_c/memp_trickle.html ) which will write pages to disk between checkpoints.
