Does AEBS always run hot

I am planning on getting an Airport Extreme Base Station, and am concerned about the heat issue. Does the AEBS always run hot or just during activity?
I am concerned because I was thinking of placing this unit underneath a Belkin powered USB/Firewire hub that was designed to sit under a Mac mini (my first Mac). Currently this hub sits under the the right side of the screen of my wife's iMac. I believe that the openings in the bottom of her iMac are for venting heat from that computer. If the AEBS is always hot I would be concerned about the heat from it rising into my wife's iMac.
I guess that the other option would be to put it on the floor under her computer to keep her feet warm.

The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) employs a large heat sink directly under the top of the case and this is where you can expect it to radiate heat. Because of this, I wouldn't recommend placing it under the Mac Mini. You may wish to consider placing in on top of the Mini instead. (ref: The Airport Extreme, version n, dissected)

Always running Hot!!

I am running in the red all the time when recording audio especially vocals. I have tried what seems like everything to change this but nothing seems to work. I'm running Logic 7.2 (of course) with a MOTU Ultralite interface through Rode NT 1 mic. I haven't tried any other mics because everything seems fine with my other DAW program DP5. I down loaded all the new drivers for both logic and interface and it seemed to help a little bit but not much. I mean I have my interfaces mixer track set at 3 and it still clips this is bad and I am at my wits end. Can it be the new operating system (Leopard)? Has any one else had this problem? Also everything sounds a little mechanical now too. I thought that may be my clock speed but it is set to internal as it always has been. Can anyone help? Thanks Wilk

I don't use an Ultralite, but the principles will be the same.
The problem you're having appears to be well before Logic in the chain. Is there any level metering on the Ultralite? If so, what's it reading? Don't try to get it peaking - just a low-ish to mid-range level indication should be fine. If there is a pad switch on you Mic input on the MOTU, enable it. Turn the mic level trim down. The Rode is a good mic, and as it's output isn't that high, you should be fine.
Maybe it's not your mic pre that's overloaded but somehow you're sending too hot a level out of your Ultralite into the Mac via the MOTU software. As far as I know, MOTU's CueMix software is monitoring only and doesn't control the mic preamp gain, but someone who uses your unit will probably chime in with more detailed advice.
Is your singer too close to the mic? Good mic positioning can make a huge difference, as well as controlling the proximity effects. A loud singer bellowing one inch away is a path to trouble
Adjusting Logic controls isn't going to help with clipping - that's all after the converters, and after the clipping has taken place. Your digital horse has already bolted.

Why does mountain lion run hot on my macbook pro?

After up grading to mountain lion my macbook pro now runs very hot!!!

I used third-party software to manualy regulate the fans, to minimize the "damage". My CPU temp on my MacBook Pro went up to about 75.0 °C (167.0 °F). And the alu-body also gets incredibly hot. For monitoring I used iStatPro.
The application integrates nicely into the system-settings menu and there's very little that can do wrong.
I set my Base fanspeed to 3000 RPM
Lower threshold to 40.0 °C (104 °F)
Upper threshold to 70.0 °C (158 °F)
I don't really see this as a long-term fix, but more as a messure to save my hardware.
Hopefully Apple will look for a fix. I really whished I didn't need this, but it's either this or a scorched lap/battery/cpu.

Does the macbook air i7 (2014) runs hot?

i wanty to know if the 13 inches macbook air model 2014 run hot or not for avrage user.
like browsing, microsoft office or watching movies.
for those cases, does this machine run hot in a way you cant put it in your lap or not comfortable?

Mine has started running hot almost as soon as I open it up. The battery life is down to about and hour and a half of continuous running because the fan is going constantly! Anyone have any ideas???

Rosetta-- Always Runs?

If Rosetta is downloaded and installed in 10.6 system-- Does it always run in the background, using up resource capacity?
Can it be run only once in a while? (and not always load up?)
Can it be invoked and then turned-off completely after a short use, without need for restarting?

Thanks Barney, my software support also seemed to confirm that it won't tie up resources "on the fly", as in case of needing to "render'. I like to be sure of this point, for intermittent uses.

I'm looking to buy the new MBP 15". Does anyone know if it runs hot? My current white polycarbonate first generation Intel Macbook always runs ridiculously hot.

Picked up a new 15" very recently. Subjective heat evaluation:
9400M: Very cool during general use (web browsing/email/etc...) Warm during gaming (WoW).
9600M GT: Warm during general use. Hot during gaming. VERY hot in Windows, gaming or not.
Of note, Windows only sees the 9600M GT, and gets uncomfortably hot (to the point I'm not only uncomfortable using it on my lap, but feel like I ought to be pointing a fan at the bottom-left (where the GPU is located).
The laptop was never uncomfortable on the 9400M, even while running WoW with the laptop directly on my lap. Just pleasantly warm. Same circumstances with the 9600M GT enabled I needed to throw a lapdesk under it, but it didn't get nearly as hot as under Windows.

PowerBook running warm/hot & fans almost always running

Does anyone else have their fan(s) constantly running? I can be doing something as simple as checking my e-mail on a flat table like surface and before I know it both fans are running. Back a couple years ago Apple replaced my fan under the screen under AppleCare, now it is buzzing again and being out of AppleCare coverage I'm not rushing to have it replaced. Any ideas why my book's fans are always running? Anyone else have this?

Hi, PBJohn. Assuming for the moment that your hardware is working properly and your fans are running to remedy an excessive heat buildup, plausible reasons for the heat might include:
1. accumulated dust and crud inside the Powerbook, obstructing the fans and/or the cooling airways;
2. multiple CPU-intensive processes running at once, including processes running in the background that you've forgotten or never known about;
3. insufficient heat-transfer paste between the processor and the heat sink;
4. lack of routine maintenance and periodic cache cleanup;
5. an overly full hard drive;
There are probably others I'm forgetting, but this list gives you some things to check.
For 1, flip back the keyboard and blow the interior out with compressed air, then remove the bottom panel and do the same to the underside of things. Make sure the air intake and outlet vents are unobstructed.
For 2, open Activity Monitor and see what's running. If you have Tiger installed, turn off Widgets — they're incredibly CPU-intensive. Drive indexing can also consume a lot of CPU cycles and produce constant hard drive activity.
3 is quite unlikely, unless you've dismantled the Powerbook and separated the processor and heat sink yourself, wiping off the transfer paste and then forgetting to apply any when reassembling.
For 4, run the background maintenance tasks manually and/or download Onyx and use it to run them and clean the various caches.
Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)
For 5, make sure your hard drive has at least 3GB and preferably at least 5GB of free space available at all times.
If you check on all these things and still can't reduce the constant operation of your fans, you may have a hardware problem.

SMC Reset, check the power and magsafe links
Hold option and click on the battery icon to check the condition, may be going bad.
Don't let it get too hot, it may go pop. It's been known to happen, but not so much on Mac's.

I understand your Photosmart 5520 runs a blank sheet of paper before you copy a document. I will do my best to assist you! Just to clarify are you printing a document from your computer or copying a document directly from your printer?
If so, then please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector. I want to see if this makes a difference. Next, try resetting the printer for more than 60 seconds. Leave the printer turned on, then disconnect the power cord.
Make sure the firmware is up to date on this printer. I will provide the HP website where you can find this download here.

Fan is alway running on my new dv7-4290us. Should I exchange for a new one or is this normal?

I just got my new dv7-4290us from the HP store and after a little while of playing with it, I noticed that the fan seems to always be running. It's not spinning very fast, just kind of a soft blowing or purring sound but audible for sure. Is this normal for this notebook or notebooks with quad cores and dedicated graphics? I called HP tech support and asked them if it was normal for the fan to run all the time, but they where kind of clueless with, 3 different guys giving me 3 different answers. I did mess around with some power management settings and the HP Thermal program but that didn't help. Turning off the fan always on setting in the bios just causes the fan to blow up every 20 seconds, so that is not a solution. There wasn't a bios update on the driver page, so I don't know about that as a fix. Otherwise everything seems to be functioning properly with no BSOD or lockups so far. The computer doesn't seem to be running hot (core temps stay under 50°c under light load) and the fan doesn't sound unhealthy like it has a bad bearing or anything. I just want to know if the fan always running at a low speed thing is normal on these machines. From my expereince with notebooks the fan alway running is a sign that your system is not cooling properly, so I wanted to get a second opinion from fellow users before I go through the hastle of exchanging this for a new one.

Does this happen on AC power only? There maybe an option in BIOS for 'Fan always on while on AC power'.

Macbook pro and time capsule run hot

How hot should the laptop be getting? It only does this intermittently and more so up by the speakers, and the speakers are not always running. The Time capsule is on all the time and is hot all the time. Not so hot as to melt the plastic etc but I was interested in the amount of heat these should be releasing. Any information would help to ease my mind. I am new to Apple products and clearly heat is not unusual for the PC world. Thank you Douglas

If you simply want a cooler Mac, download smcFanControl - this program lets you set a minimum speed for the fans. I set it to 2400 - 2000 is the standard minimum temp that the MacBook Pro sets, and IMO it's just not enough.
I live in a pretty hot country so the MacBook Pro would get too hot to touch frequently. smcFanControl allows you to set a few different profiles, so when you think your computer is too hot, you can just switch to another profile and set min fan speed to, say 3000 or 4000 RPM. It only really starts to make noise at 4000.
Apple obviously had to strike a balance between noise and heat, and IMO they allow the MBP to run too hot. It will eventually damage components. I lost a hard drive and I am pretty sure it was due to heat because I had left the MBP unattended and charging, and it just felt extremely hot to the touch. The next day, the hard disk was dead...

Please HELP! Notifyd is causing MBP to run hot

My Mac Book Pro 2011 OS X latest update, started running hot. if I force stop the notifyd it cools off. I'm not sure what is causing this. I have dont a re-install of the OS. Not sure what else to try. Any suggestions?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

New MBP seems to run hot & fan runs almost all the time

I've had my MBP for just about a week now. It's the new, 15", 2.2 GHz model. It's great, but I notice that it runs hotter than my Powerbook G4 did and the fan is almost always on. It's presently sitting on a wooden topped table. My house is not AC-ed, but the air temp is about 70 F/21 C today. Seems to run hot in my AC-ed faculty office too, when I am there. What is "normal" for this machine. TIA.

Ditto what Ned says. To be sure, 80 C is not too hot (it is the temp that the MBP is designed to maintain as a working maximum), but that you are experiencing this temp at all times indicates that something is pushing the processor at all times.
That is not normal. As has been suggested, have a look at Activity Monitor. If you are not doing anything of any consequence at the time, your CPU usage should be very, very low, and processes that you see using CPU intermittently (there will be many of these processes) should only use a small percentage when they use any at all.

Macbook 2007 running hot, upgrades/service that can help?

In need of a little help if I can get any advice.
My mid-2007 Macbook is running WAY too loud hot and the battery, which always lasted for an average of 2-2.5 hours, is now only lasting for about 1-1.5 hours. This is a new problem, might've started after I put iLife '11 on the computer, because it wasn't an issue about a month ago...I meet the required specs for running it, but I'm thinking this is what caused the problem. It also seems to be taking longer to charge it. My goal is to get this thing running better so I can get another 2 years out of it before I get I new laptop. I've had it for just about 4 years now and I'd like to get to 6.
I'm running 10.6.7, iLife '11.
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I was thinking about getting a 2GB RAM card so that the computer is running 3GB instead of only 2, because I can barely run Parallels at this point without wanting to rip my hair out.
I was also going to change to a 500gb HD as I only have 12gb left on the 320gb one that is in it now. Figure it would help have more than about 3% of the HD space available on it. Will removing some stuff of the hard drive now help? Until I get the bigger one? I can put a lot of my TV shows on an external and free up about 23gb for a total of 10% of the HD space free instead of 3%.
So, other than upgrading one of the 1gb ram cards to 2gb and putting in a new hard drive (I was going to go to 500, but now I'm thinking I should go to 640 or 750 instead so that I'm good for the next two years), what is recommended? I can take it to get looked at by a local Mac service provider for $35. They'll let me know of anything I need done and give me the option of it I want it or not. Any thoughts?
Guess I'm just trying to figure out what I should concentrate on more? Getting it looked at? Adding the RAM? Freeing up HD space? Something else? I would like to wait for the upgrade in HD size so I can get bigger than 500gb.
And in regard to the HD: Is it recommended to stay with the 5400rpm instead of going to 7200? Considering it is running hot I'd think I should stick with 5400rpm, 3.0gb/s, 8mb cache? Any recommendations which one to go with? I know I need to avoid ones with motion sensors...but what does that mean? I see two 750gb models on Newegg, but neither say anything about that (Western Digital WD7500BPVT Scorpio Blue Mobile Hard Drive & Hitachi Travelstar 5K750 0J11563 2.5" Hard Drive)
