Does airport extreme replace my current router?

Does airport extreme replace my current router?

Your choice.. in some cases you will bridge the AE and use it as wireless AP and switch.
In other cases you will bridge your existing router and use the AE in router mode.
We cannot easily answer without specifics..
What broadband modem / router do you have? Make and model?
What are you hoping to achieve with the AE?

  • Does airport extreme replace my old d- link wireless moden

Does the airport extreme replace my old D-Link modem I need to replace it and would like to buy another apple product as I have an iPad, iPhone,iPod touch and a MacBook air

The AirPort Extreme is a router only.
It does not have a modem on board, so you will need to continue to use the D-Link modem you have now, or add a new modem if you want to buy an AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme replacing an old router

I am trying to replace my old Lyinksys router for my newm Aiport Extreme. I follow all instruction and conected the Airport to Lyinksys and it copied all informormation from Lynksys. But as I understood and I am replacing the Lyinksys for the Aiport I might disconect one fron other, disconect the Lynksys fron DSL !odem and conect the Airport to the modem. But when I do that the Airport doesn'T apear in my Ipad. It apears only conect to Lynksys as Slave.
    How must I procedure.

Your issue is the Airport Extreme default settings is in Bridge Mode.  Since you are replacing your current linksys router with this Airport Extreme you will need to make a settings change.  Do the following.
    1.  Plug in ethernet cord from your computer into the WAN port (Main port with like a circle icon)
    2. Open Airport Utility Software
    3. Click on Manual Setup
    4. Click on the "Internet Tab"
** Under Internet Connection Tab, at the bottom it says Connection Sharing.
    5. Change that from Bridge Mode to Share a public IP address
**I can get deeper into setting up a lot of stuff but lets just leave the rest to default**
    6.  Hit Update
**You may get error's because your are connecting to your computer in the WAN port that is okay just ignore them.
    7.  Unplug Ethernet cord from computer.
    8.  Connect a ethernet cord from your DSL modem box into your WAN port on the apple router.
Let me know if this fixes your issue.  Also remove the linksys modem because it will mess up your setup.

  • Airport extreme or my current router.

I have a d-link dir-655 router. I've had this router since 2010. It's a fast router and it has never let me down. I recently purchased an ipad, imac and macbook pro. My brother and his wife have windows computers. Is it recommended I get an airport extreme router? Just in case I buy one. Would this give me problems with a windows based computer?

FWIW, I currently have both a 4th gen Time Capsule & AirPort Extreme Base Station in my home network configuration. These are my only wireless routers and they support a mix of network clients that include Windows XP, Vista, & 7 OSs without any issues.

  • Does Airport Extreme support Static Routes?

I have client using an Airport Extreme as their Router. They currently connect to another device outside their network using AppleTalk.
It is planned to put this device onto TCP/IP but on a different subnet (e.g. their subnet is 192.168.5.X and the device will be on say 192.168.25.X). Does Airport Extreme support (like other Routers) the ability to set up a static link to a device on a different subnet (can’t find any information in a doco or the utility) or do they need to replace this with a “real“ router?

Sure, I could do something like route add -net 10.100.10 192.168.0.100 on every client machine on the subnet, but there is no such way to configure a web cam and similiar devices
    Any idea, Apple?

  • Airport Extreme Replacement Card - Mac Pro G5

I have an early Mac Pro G5 dual and just added the Apple M8881 Airport Extreme replacement card. Did not receive any software (driver?) with it. I am running Mac OSX 10.4. The only download I see for this card is for 10.3. The computer sees the card but the card sees no signals. Antenna, including the "T" antenna on rear of tower seems to be all ok. Any suggestions?

    Duane,
That's what I thought, thanks. If I put the computer right next to the base station, I get a very weak signal. When I unplug the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When I unplug the cable to the "T" antenna, the signal does not drop. When that close to the base station, some signal must be getting directly into the card. The problem must obviously be with the antenna jack and I will be returning the card for a replacement.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jack

  • How far does airport extremes range go

how far does airport extremes range go

Apple says up to 300 feet or so, but since tests like this are performed in a very large room with no walls, the specification won't mean much to most of us in the real world.
Bottom line is that it is not possible to make a good guess about distance capabilities in a home without knowing the number of walls and or ceilings the signal must pass through.
(A typicall wall of sheetrock and 2 by 4s will absorb on average about 15-20% of the signal and a ceiling absorbs more because it is thicker).
As a very rough guide...if the signal from the wireless router must pass through 4-5 walls, or a ceiling and 2-3 walls, then there won't be much of it left by the time it reaches a computer or other wireless device.

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

Also, Airport Extreme is not a "modem". It is a router.

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • Will adding AirPort Extreme to my fios router improve my speed and distance to led tv.. The tv keeps dropping network and 50% of the time it tells me my broadband is too slow. I have upgraded to fios faster internet speed.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my Fios router improve reception on tv located about 50 feet away..have new top of the line samsung smart tv and it drops signal every other day. When trying to watch netflix or amazon it transmits in SD only says bandwidth is not high enough for Hd. My ipad laptops and iphone work fine in this room. Any help will be appreciated or am I better off with a booster.

The AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly "boost" or "repeat" the wireless signal from the Fios router, since It will only work with another Apple router for that feature.
So, if you plan to extend or repeat the FIos wireless signal, you should use a product by the same manufacturer as the Fios router....or possibly a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear.
Make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy any kind of extender or repeater.....since you cannot know if the product will help until you try it out in your home.
The TV really needs a wired Ethernet connection from the Fios router if at all possible.

  • HT4260 I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?

I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?
    Appreciate your assistance.

The answer depends on whether the AirPort Extreme is your main router....or...the Linksys device is your main router.
In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired.
