Does allowing the Battery to drain to 0% depletes full charge capacity?

I bought a Macbook pro 17-in intel core 2 duo 2.4Ghz from the Phiippines on July 10, 2007 and brought it to Ireland couple of days after. Later, I upgraded to leopard 10.5.2 with 4 Gig memory. Auto updates have been installed since its first use. The only problem I encountered (except for some Safari quitting unexpedtedly) was in the battery.
Here is the record of my MBP battery use:
Battery information
Battery : MBP 17in Rechargeable Battery
Model: A1189 10.18V 68Wh
Serial: 6 _ _ _ _ _ DVYF1A
My Battery practice:
- I wait for 5% remaining charge before I plug the charger
- At several occasions I forgot to plug the charger before remaining charge goes to 0%
- I usually unplug the wall charger as soon as full charge is indicated.
- I sometimes leave the wall charger plugged for several hours after green light shows.
- I use my MBP for an average of 12 - 14 hours a day. At times I dont shut it down and just allow it to go to sleep mode.
- Calibrated about 10 times.
Record of Battery Life/Charging
Battery Cycle Life (based on istatpro) Full Charge Capacity (based on MBP)
1 100% No Record
62 100% 6492 mAh
66 100% 6484 mAh
100 100% 6484 mAh
300 98% 6213 mAh
301-317 95-99% 5850 - 6109 mAh
318 83% 5254 mAh
318 (at 3908mAh or 53% remaining charge MBP suddenly shuts down)
318 (MBP shuts down if wall charger is unplugged) Tried calibrating and resetting SMC but did not work.
I then checked if my MBP is still covered by the one-year warranty despite more than 300 battery cycles, no bulges present at apple website https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do (here you have to enter your MBP serial number)
I brought my MBP for check up here in Dublin, Ireland and indeed the problem was the battery. They replaced my battery with a new one without cost.
Thanks Apple my new battery now has a Battery Health of 100% with the following initial cycle records:
Battery Cycle Full Charge Capacity
1 (33% remaining charge as soon as I received it) 6810 mAh
1 (I then used the remaining charge up to 1%) 6726 mAh
1 (full charged) 6810 mAh
1 (full charged) I let it rest for few hours then checked 6879 mAh
2 (full charged) 6879 mAh
3 (full charged) 6876 mAh
4 (full charged) 6830 mAh
5 (full charged) 6845 mAh
5 (full charged) I let it rest for 1 hour then checked 6868 mAh
6 (3% remaining charge) 6829 mAh
I forgot to plug the charger (battery drained to 0%) 6492 mAh
Notice the sudden drop of full charge capacity in cycle 6? How do I recover the lost charge capacity? Does letting the battery drain to 0% depletes its full charge capacity?

The short answer is that yes, completely draining the battery has a slight negative impact on full charge capacity. The full charge capacity does fluctuate a bit over time, but the general trend is downward no matter what you do - there's a continuous chemical reaction occurring in the battery, with a finite life.
However, I note that you state +I wait for 5% remaining charge before I plug the charger+; if you are doing this because that is what you need to do, i.e. you do most of your work away from a power source, fine. But, if you are doing that because you believe that's best for your battery, that is incorrect. The 'old' NiCd batteries performed best with full discharge and full charge. The 'newer' Li-based batteries do not have this requirement, and in fact perform better over time when used frequently but 'lightly', avoiding full discharges (except for the occasional battery calibration, which allows the OS to more accurately determine the time to charge and discharge).

  • TS1702 Purchased stray souls game but when I try playing it freezes my iPad 3 and I have to allow the battery to drain completely before I can use iPad againT

Stray souls freezing my iPad. What to do?

You don't have to let the battery drain. Quit the app if that happens again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps.
You should delete the app and reinstall it if it keeps freezing on you. You don't have to pay for it again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought it with.

  • My iPhone 4 is only 14 months old over dropped very well looke after, one day the lock button stops then the volume buttons, now the headphone port does not work and the battery lasts about 4 hours after full charge I still have a year left on my contract

My phone is 2 months out of warranty, it's never been dropped or miss used yet the past week every day something has gone wrong with it. First the lock button stopped then the side volume buttons. Then the head phone port when I putt headphones in the phone turns the volume
Down automatically and it won't turn up until I take my headphones back out. The battery lasts 4 hours max after a full charge and today I took my phone off the docking charger and all my music has gone! The phone is breaking down more and more everyday what is going on! I know people who have had there iPhones years an non of this happen! I still have a year left on my contract too!

  • HT4060 Is it best to allow the battery in my iPad to discharge fully before charging or no.??

Is it best to allow the battery in my iPad to discharge fully before charging or no.??

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Phone Not Starting after the battery was drained

My Phone's battery was drained and when connected to charge the phone it is not charging. I have kept it for hours but When I try to start my phone it does not do any thing. I am not sure if it is charging or not. Neither anything works please help me with this.

When connected to a power source hold down both the volume up and power button for around 20 seconds then leave it for around 2 hours then check - If this fails then unfortunately your only options are to either return your device to the place of purchase or contact Xperia care http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

  • My iPod Touch is either a blue screen or shows the battery as drained with red at the front and a white lightening bolt below it. It is plugged in to charge, but won't.

I tried holding down both buttons and it will temp. turn off, then show the apple, then a narrow white line goes from left to right and then the blue screen stays on. I am not that familiar with dealing with electronic devices so please keep any instructions as simple as possible, thanks. T

    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
Also, if youy can't turn the iPod off (screen off) then try letting the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the articles again.
If still problem time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • I'm getting no power on the MacBook when plugged in.  The battery has drained.

The battery has drained on my MacBook and the power cord does not seem to connect. The light on the plug does not light. I pulled the battery to reset and plugged it in again but it does not charge or turn on. What can I do now?

  • I bought an iphone 5 2 days ago and both days, the battery has drained to 20% in 12 hours....  I thought it was supposed to have 8 hours of talk time?  I haven't even been talking on it. 2 calls...  just texting.  Is there a app killer app available?

I bought an iphone 5 only 2 days ago and both days the battery has drained to 20%.  All I have done is text and make 1 call...  Are there any app killers or task killers for this phone to download?

Well, i bought two iphone 5 for me and my wife...she used it for only 2 days and she gave it back to me complaining from the same problem and she went back to her 4S, i thought she was kidding until i used mine,,,oh my god, the battery does not last for more than 6 or 7 hours, even without making any calls. i was so happy with my previous 4S as i used to charge it at night and stay almost 2 days on a stand by before recharge it again. well, im done with apple, have an appointment today in apple store to return mine, and even if they give me 2 new ones, i will not even open them,,,, for sale right away.

  • After the initial "recharging" of my Iphone 5, is it once again necessary to allow the battery to fully die before charging?

After the inital die/recharge of my Iphone 5, is it necessary to, once again, allow the battery to completely die before charging? Or, can I just recharge it when the battery gets low?

You can recharge your phone whenever you want. The lithium ion battery (not just apples) have a certin amount of charge cycles like any other lithium battery. A charge cycle is a complete 0%-100%. So sticking it on the charger everytime at night doesn't count as a charge cycle. If your batter is at 80% then you charge it to 100% that is 20% of a charge cycle. Its a little confusing, but I learned it with doing a lot of asking and research. Don't worry, just charge your phone when you need to and you'll be fine.
Its recommended to do a full charge from 0%-100% once a month to calibrate the battery meter.

  • While I was updating my ipod touch to ios 6 the battery got drained during the process, i tried restoring it, it couldnt now my ipod is stuck on the Apple logo screen.

while I was updating my ipod touch to ios 6 the battery got drained during the process, i tried restoring it, it couldnt now my ipod is stuck on the Apple logo screen.
Can anyone help me with this issue???

Connect your iTouch to your PC then open iTunes, if iTunes does not recognize your device, try to hold the SLEEP Button and the HOME button at the same time (iPod Reset) for a couple of seconds until the "Charging Tone sounds, now you should be seeing your device name in the iTunes " Device List". If you do, just click RESTORE and iTunes will automatically restore your iTouch to original set-up and download the iOS6 update.
    Hope this helps..

  • How much time will i take for the battery to drain, with white screen of death?

Yesterday I updated the software of my iPod touch (4gen), and today while using facebook I got the white screen of death. I tried to holding the sleep and home buttons but I didn't help. Then I tried to connect to iTunes but iTunes does not recognize my iPod. It seems that the only solution is to let the battery drain. My question is how much time will it take for the battery to drain (I charged it yesterday). Am I damaging my iPod in anyway?( I am worried because the back is a little hot). Should Ii try co cool it by placing  it in front of a fan?

Yes it will show the low battery picture. Then I just connected it to my PC and restored it.
For the cold pack I used one of these gel-packs http://www.coldchaintech.com/products/gel-packs.php ( I had them at home).
I don't think using ice is a good idea here is why:
    1. If you use an ice pack you should be careful to prevent water from entering your iPod.
    2. Your iPod should not get colder than 32° F which is the minimum Operating temperature. And ice is colder than 32° F.

  • HT201263 When my Ipod touch is in autolock I can only restart the device holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds.  While in auto-lock it is using battery power and will do so until the battery is drained.  Whats wrong

When my Ipod touch is in autolock I can only restart the device holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds.  While in auto-lock it is using battery power and will do so until the battery is drained.  Whats wrong?

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to restore via iTunes. Try placing in Recovery mode if necessary to restore.
    - If you can't turn the iPod completely off, let the batter fully drain. After charging for at lerast anhour try again
    - If still not successful time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Macbook Pro retina display 13 inch 2014 model stopped charging. Charger LED also not on while plugged in. The battery fully drained off so the system can not be started but the system can detect the charger when earlier it was switched on before draining off the charge. Charger type magsafe 60W.

Once you have examined the power inlet on the computer for dirt, and made certain that the pins on the end of the MagSafe cord are free to move in and out to make contact, there is very little you can do yourself.
You will need to visit your Apple Store (FREE with appointment) or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider (policy varies). They work on these all the time and have good expertise and lots of spare parts to try to determine the problem.
