Does an ethernet cable have to be connected after install is complete ?

Is it necessary to keep the modem connected to a computer via ethernet cable after install is complete ?

If you have a wi-fi router or gateway, it is still best to user ethernet if it is convenient like for a desktop computer.  If it's a laptop or portable device then use wi-fi is OK, but you might not get the same speeds depending on the equipment and how far you are from the wi-fi router or gateway.

  • What Ethernet cable is best for connecting hub to ...

Does it matter which ethernet cable is used to connect the vision box for the extra channels?, is it just a normal ethernet and can anybody recommend a good one please (possible 15 or 20 metres).
Background: The engineer was supposed to install vision (with Ethernet) and infinity (upgrade from long time adsl/vision with power line adapters). It was on my order confirmation and in order tracking - on the day of installation the engineer (not open reach) said "not on my job list" - I showed him emails, he rang his office said nothing he could do about it and he had just came from someone with same issue. He told me to set up my new box (I previously had original black box) with the LANs I already had.
When I contacted BT (dealing direct with a member of the care team) she was not happy and said it should of been done and that if I needed an engineer l would not be charged (as it was supposed to have been done) they even had an issue "closing" the order because the vision installation was still open. I was then told (because of how I long may have to wait for an appointment) that they would send me a 10 Meter cable - and if that wasn't long enough/ didn't work - then arrange for the engineer to come out (free of charge).
Now I'm not sure if 10 meters will be long enough (it will be tight if it is) - so if it doesn't fit I want to look into just buying a larger one (rather than another few weeks of waiting).
The extra channels are working fine with the LANs (for now), but I would rather have a wired connection (so if anything goes wrong it won't be blamed on my set up/less chance of errors).

Any normal network cable will do really as long as it looks like reasonable quality. Sometimes called an RJ45 cable, or cat5 cable. You might be able to get a back to back connector and just buy a lead to extend the one they've sent to you. A back to back just connects two ethernet cables together. Powerlines are OK under some circumstances but are not recommended or supported by BT.

  • I'm having problems with my internet connection after installing OS X Lion. Is this a known problem or just a local problem?

I'm having problems with my internet connection after installing OS X Lion. Is this a known problem or just a local problem?
After +/- 10 to 15min my connection is gone.
    Does anyone have a sollution?

Lots of people are having the same problem, you're not the only one, belieeeeve me.
Just Googling the problem gets you tons of people complaining about the same thing, SOMETHING is up with Lion what wasn't happening with Snow Leopard. i just bought a new Imac and it CAME with Lion, so i started experiencing this internet dropout immediately.
It's been going on for the most of a year it looks like (at least by the dates from the threads i've been reading)
So your best bet is to fiddle with the System Preferences and read what other people have used to make theirs work. i'm doing that myself right now.  I already posted  a similar thread last night trying to figure out why my connection kept on dropping, i got a reply which linked me to a site. i followed the instructions there, so far so good, but i'm just being cautiously optimistic.
i'm gonna call Apple today and see if they've found anything, though seeing as this is a problem right out of the box there may not be an immediate solution. Good luck hunting for a solution :3

  • Can connect via ethernet cable, have good Airport signal but no connection

    Hey folks,
Pesky problem. I'm trying to connect to my wireless airport extreme basestation and having problems. Everythings hooked up correctly and if I plug the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the powerbook it works fine. The odd thing is that my computer sees the base station, it has good signal, and it tells me I'm connected to the internet via airport.
Why then can I not actually acess it? Any thoughts?...it's comcast high-speed in case that matters.
    Cheers,
    Sean

    Sean,
---- I was trying to get a link to another similar thread, where one of the experts (I'm not one of them) made some recommendations, but I can't seem to find it.
---- Is your Network Preferences selected for Airport as well as ethernet, and is Airport at the top of the list? Anyway, the fact that your direct connection PB to modem is working fine, may be the very thing causing your problem. The modem looks for the PB (MAC address?). So, you can do an hardware reset, or if not then unplug it for a good while (not tooggle the power on & off, but I think I saw someone even recommend overnight). Shutdown the AEBS & PB.
---- Then after you powerup the modem & it connects with the ISP (it takes just a short few minutes, you can watch the lights), then power up the airport, then after its connected up to the modem (again, a few minutes, you can watch the lights), bootup the PB.
---- I wish that I could have found the other thread for you, as the experts do an extremely better job of this.

  • Ethernet cable doesn't appear connected?

Over the last few days I have had an intermittnet difficulty conencting to thr Internet.
I discovered that although it's physically plugged in, the ethernet cable isn't - the System Network reports, 'The cable for the Built-in Ethernet is not plugged in'.
I changed th cable and find it does work okay on a differnet mac. Somehow the physical connection, which looks okay, seems not to be working.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong and what options I have for a fix?
Would an ethernet card provide a viable alternative ethernet connector?
    Thanks

    Hi Richard,
I had the same problem as you today. My network status in network showed that my ethernet cable was not connected as well. I did some troubleshooting and my Dell was working ok, my G4 laptop & MBP was working as well because I had everthing hooked up via a router and a DSL modem.
Come to find out, somehow my settings were changed without my knowledge in network. What I did was to change was settings back under network to built in Ethernet. Under TCP/IP tab, I changed the setting to Using DHCP and under PPPoE tab, turn off connect using PPPoe, do this first. After resetting these settings I checked show: network status and everything works like before. It wasn't my Ethernet cable after all. I hope this helps

  • Does the Base Station HAVE to be connected to a computer?

Due to some new wiring in my house, the room where my computer now is is a few rooms away from a phone outlet. I have an Apple Extreme Base Station, and this is my previous my wireless set-up:
DSL phone line goes into router/modem, which is then plugged into the Airport Extreme Base Station. The Base Station is then plugged into the Ethernet port of my G4 (which also has a wireless card).
My question is whether my computer has to be plugged into the Base Station at all, considering that it already has a wireless card? Since the Base Station is already configured, can my computer just get DSL access across the wireless net from a few rooms away via it's wireless card? Or does the Base Station have to be hardwired to a computer in order to properly operate?
    Thanks in advance.

Nope, hard wiring your computer(s) to the ABS isn't required. In my case, I run a PowerMac, Mac mini and two laptops off one ABS with a cable modem input (range extended with three AirPort Express modules). None of the computers are hardwired to the ABS...all connect wirelessly.

  • Bridge an AirPort Express from an Extreme connected to a Motorola DOCSIS 3 cable/modem/gateway via an ethernet cable? Can I connect ethernet to the Express to setup/handshake/coordinate, and then unplug the ethernet cable from the Express?

In other words, does the AirPort Extreme NEED to be the device connected to the coaxial cable, or can I connect that cable to the Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem/wireless gateway? (My Internet provider requires DOCSIS 3.0 for speeds above 12 megabits/sec.)
Will the Airport Extreme "program" the Express via an ethernet cable, and than the cable can be removed?
The "bridge" or "repeater needs to be quite a distance away from the physically connected cable modem/wireless gateway and the ethernet- connected AirPort Extreme, and we have wall-to-wall carpeting, and the walls and ceilings are off-limits (family politics), so a looooong ethernet cable is out of the question.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanx!

And Motorola touts this wireless gateway as having amazing coverage (360, I think they call it),but in fairness, this house is old and has a 5 hanset cordless landline and a microwave and a fan, etc., etc., etc......

  • Does the Ethernet Cable Matter

I noticed they have an ethernet cable in the apple Store.  My current one is shot, lost the latch that keeps it from coming out, and is twisted every which way.  Does it matter what ethernrt cable one uses fro the MBP regarding the connection?  I see they sell one that is not called an "ethernet" cable, but would it do any good for my connection is I purchased something like this or are ethernet cables CAT5 just the same as the next?

What would I look for at Monoprice?...I do not have a gigabyte network so I just need a regular ethernet cable. I beleive this cable delivers a very high performance for a CAT 6 Ethernet cabe.
My post had a Web link in the text where it says "a cable just as good..." Click that and it goes straight to the 7 foot cable.
As far as not needing Gigabit, when prices are this low, I don't see why not just get the best so you don't have to buy it over again later.

Not knowing much at all in the network area or even very limited knowledge in the computer field, what other cables might I need down the road?  I am geeting myself into looking like a ******* now because I do not even know how to hook up a wireless connection whic is something I have been wanting to do to my MBP for years.  I even purchased the Airport Extreme about 6 years ago and never opened it.  I do not have my MBP hooked up to a device for strroage so I need courses bigtime.
OK. Maybe you don't need a few more cables then. I'm always connecting stuff, like external drives and printers and things, and I already have a couple of Ethernet cables with broken connectors so spares are nice.

  • Can 2 Macs connect with ethernet cable to share DVD for remote install?

Can I simply connect a Mac Mini Server and MacBook together with an ethernet cable?
I want to reinstall Mac OS X Server on the DVDless Mac Mini. There is no separate AirPort device.
So do I just connect the two machines with an ethernet cable, start the remote install program on the MacBook, then restart the Mac Mini with the Option key pressed?
    Thanks.

According to page 57 of the Getting Started 10.6 server manual, you can use a Mac with a DVD drive operating in target disk mode for this. I see no mention of using Ethernet so I assume it is not supported. Even if it was, it would be extremely slow compared to using FireWire target disk mode.

  • No internet connection after installing yosemite

After installing Yosemite, I have no internet connection. If I hold option key, my wifi description shows Internet as unreachable, although all my bars are dark and the rest of the settings  look the same. When I connected via cable, it did not show an Ethernet connection. My pc and iPad work fine,so it isn't my carrier.  Anyone else have this problem and know a fix???  Thanks so much for any assistance..

You are on to something here.
I tried unloading, and it was not found.  I then loaded the file, and magically all my apple apps made their network connections and started working.
But here's where it gets funny.
I logged off, and into another use account and I had no network connection.
I logged back into my account, and had no network connection.  I needed to unload and load the file again for the network to return.
    More troubleshooting ahead...

  • Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad won't automatically connect after installing Boot Camp

    Hey guys!
Another peculiar thing happened to me today with my 3-week-old maxed-out 2012 iMac (other than it kernel panicking when I powered it down the other day...did I mention this was 3 weeks old?).
After installing Boot Camp which I will never do again, my iMac (on the OS X side) no longer recognizes my stock Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse automatically, until I press a button on the keyboard and wait 5 seconds, click the trackpad and wait 5 seconds, or click the mouse and wait 5 seconds.
(The Windows 8 Boot Camp side pairs with the devices immediately after Windows boots, which leads me to believe that the bluetooth devices are defaulting to look for Windows.)
One of my huge fears I had when considering purchasing an iMac is that the Bluetooth devices wouldn't immediately connect. Being a power-user with former Mac notebooks and working understandably fast having owned a web development company for 8 years now and not having to worry about Bluetooth device pairing, I'd like to think this fear is substantiated. But after first use (before installing Windows 8 with Boot Camp Assistant) it functioned normally and the iMac would automatically discover my peripherals and connect them by the time time computer turned on. I also had no trouble holding the Option key on boot to select a boot device....
Now, ever since I set up Windows 8 on the Boot Camp partition and paired the keyboard/mouse/trackpad to Windows, the Mac side completely ignores the keyboard/mouse/trackpad until I click a button on each.
I'm trying to keep it together but this is raging me out.
I went into Windows, immediately unpaired the 3 peripherals from windows and now use a wired keyboard/mouse with Windows (yay, desk space!), deleted the items entirely from the bluetooth panel, then booted to Mac and did the same thing. I then re-paired the devices to the OS X side andddd...no go! Still doesn't find them automatically. I am extremely upset by this and can't seem to fix it.
To summarize, my two issues are:
    A. The iMac in OS X does not automatically recognize my bluetooth peripherals until I click a button on each and wait a couple seconds for them to pair.
    B. I cannot hold Option to select a boot device (or choose Windows/Mac for example) because the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard until OS X boots and I press a key.
Please...for the love of god...someone help me, and stop me from formatting my entire computer over this issue.

I don't have a logitech mouse, but is it possible that the mouse is going to sleep during the reboot, and is thus unavailable when the OS is looking for it?

  • Lost federation connections after installing new certificate

After installing a new NIC for the egde external connection and new GoDaddy 10-slot UCC cert on my edge server and Forefront TMG reverse proxy, I have lost the ability to connect to my federated partners.  Snooper logs seem to indicate that the
certificate is not being accepted.  Test-CsFederatedPartner returns the message, "This machine does not have any assigned certificate."  Running the Lync Deployment Wizard on the edge shows that it definitely does have a certificate.  Get-CsCertificate,
Test-CsComputer, and Test-CsCertificateConfiguration all show the new certificate is in place.  Digicert's online certificate check has no problem finding the edge server and has verified that the cert is functional.  This edge server was running
    perfectly for over a year.
    I'm stumped.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,CJADuva,
Did all your other external access such as external user login and download address book or meeting content work normally?Just the federation broken?
What the SN and SAN entries of the new GoDaddy UCC certificate?Do they meet the external Edge certificate requirements?Check the following links for Edge certificate requirements

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398519.aspx
If all are ok,please ask your federated partner to check if the Godaddy CA is in their trust CA list, also I remember that Godaddy always has intermediate certificate, please check if you and your partner has installed it too.
    Check
