Does an overheating battery slows down phone?

Today, my 6680 got so much hotter than usual while idle under normal temperature. Later on, the phone got stuck when opening the Tracks folder of my Gallery. It also took longer to open MWebster and Opera.
I've only been using this phone and its battery for nine months for mostly listening to mp3s and browsing the net.
Does an overheating battery slows down or, even worse, freeze the phone?

Fortunately, my battery doesn't belong to the defective ones
Anyway, this morning the phone seemed normal until I synced it to my PC as a modem. After about an hour, the phone started freezing again while opening some programs. I can even barely access the menu so I had a phone reformat which seemed to solve the problem temporarily. I may have the phone repaired if the problem persists though.Message Edited by s60smartuser on 02-Sep-200705:19 AM

  • Does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

does too many apps slow down iphone's performance?

31 apps is nothing. I have 130 apps XD. Then again, I'm using an iPhone 4S which has more RAM compared to the 3GS. RAM is everything when it comes to speed. To use the app switcher, press the home button twice quickly and a list of your recently opened apps will appear. Then hold down on any app and all the apps will go to wiggle mode (like they do when you're deleting apps. Now, simply tap on the red icon that appears at the top left corner of any app you don't want running in the background. This will free up RAM and should make your phone faster.

  • Do apps running in the background drain battery, slow down performance, or use cellular data?

I have heard that if you don't kill the apps running in the background, they will drain your battery, slow your other apps down, and could be using your data without any warning.  I've looked all over the place for a definitive answer to this, but different people and websites provide conflicting responses and I haven't found any useful information regarding this issue directly from Apple.  If anyone knows whether or not having apps constantly running in the background is harmful in anyway (and has a credible resource to back up their claim) let me know and provide a link to the answer if possible.

What do you mean 'running in the background'? Something that is 'running' will definitely use battery, nothing runs on air or whatever. If an app uses data while it's 'running' then it will use data. Why do you need a link, it's common sense isn't it? Slow the phone down? That I can't say definitively, but it stands to reason that it will.

  • Read Receipts Slowing Down Phone IMMENSELY!

There is a problem and it's quite annoying and frustrating. It's happened with both of my phones, so it has to be something in my settings, or something. Because as I am texting people with their Read Receipts on, it slows my phone down immensely! I cannot send or receive texts until I receive the read receipt from that person. (It usually lasts a good 10-50 minutes) And it's only with those who have it turned on. It seems like everyone else doesn't have this problem. I thought by getting a knew phone, that it would put and end to this problem, but it didn't. And I'm quite annoyed. And I would like to find a solution ASAP! :) So thank you all for your help in advance.

    1. Don't give out any info at all to anyone over the phone unless you know who they are. Somewhere out there someone knows you have a Mac & where you live. It probably is nothing to worry about, but don't tempt fate.
    2. Don't install software from untrusted sources. There are no Mac viruses but anybody can make a trojan that will compromise your system if you are foolish enough to install it. Unless you have done that, it is extremely unlikely there is any malware on your Mac.
    3. To diagnose your slowdown problem, start by running Disk Utility's two tests (the repair permissions & verify disk ones). If they don't turn up anything strange, try running the Apple Hardware Test.

  • Does a MacBook Pro slow down after OS updates much like an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad?

I have A 4th generation iPod touch that I've had for almost two years, I also have an iPhone 4s and an iPad 2. When I bought the iPod touch it ran very quick and no sluggishness now with a few iOS updates over the months it's pretty slow and sluggish.  So far both my iPhone 4s and my iPad 2 are running very good. What I've heard from friends who have iPhone's 3GS or an iPad 1 is that they're both sluggish after the iOS updates over the months and years. My question is, not owning a MacBook, does this computer slow down the same way the ios devices do after months and years of OS updates?  My experience with my netbook is that it's become much more stable then when i first bought it with no sluggishness what so ever over the months of updates through Microsoft updates. Thanks.
    Tommy Vercetti

Any computer can be slower when running a more demanding system than it was designed for.  In my general experience, though, a Mac will continue running just fine on systems two major versions after what it shipped with.  (For example, a machine that shipped with Leopard (10.5) will probably be able to run Lion (10.7) just fine, provided there's enough RAM and the hard drive isn't too full.)  The only time I've had major issues with sluggishness was with an old PowerBook that shipped with Mac OS 9 and that I updated eventually to Mac OS X 10.3...  a total of four versions later!  I probably would have been better off leaving it at 10.2, but wanted some feature in 10.3 (I forget what at this point).  And it's still in a cabinet in my office, in perfect working order.
Regarding iOS, my first-generation iPod Touch, updated to the latest system it can support, still works just fine.  Of course, it feels more sluggish when I do something with it because I've gotten used to expecting more from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
So, no, a Mac should not get sluggish over time, as long as you don't try to push it beyond it's capabilities.  The only Mac I have ever felt it necessary to replace before about 5-6 years of age was the one I dropped on the floor.
Edit: Also, your comparison with Windows downloading updates is not quite the same thing as what I've said above.  Upgrading a Mac from 10.6 to 10.7 is like upgrading a Windows machine from Windows Vista to Windows 7.  The free incremental updates (10.7.1, 10.7.2, etc), which are more similar to automatic Windows updates, definitely should not cause sluggishness.

  • Does re-installing system slow down the HD?

    Hi
My MBP came back from repair with a new HD and OS 10.5 already installed. For various reasons I might want to wipe it and re-install the system software. But does this process of re-installing the system leave any 'debris' on the drive which might slow down performance in the long run? If so I may leave it, but it's a question I've always wondered about - when you re-install does the drive go back to being 'like new' again or is there a gradual accumulation of code which just adds more clutter?
    Thanks for any help
    John

If the OS or an app or whatever needs 10GB (for example) of free space, what does it matter if it's 10GB out of 100GB or 10GB out of 1TB?
    I don't think it matters.
    I thought that's what MacRS4 is saying
I did not understand it to be. The assertion was:
The 85% corruption thing fassumes a relationship of the largest file types to the size of the physical drive.
It does not. It assumes that the directory expansion varies with the total amount of data that needs to be stored. The 85% refers to the smallest amount of contiguous disk capacity needed to permit the file system to lay down new pieces of the Extents Overflow file. That does not have to do with the size of any individual file but with the total amount of data that needs to be accommodated in the file system/directory.
this question seems to asd for just the opposite, a rationale as to why a percentage would be needed, not a set amount of space.
My intention was to suggest there was a relationship (read percentage) between the total amount of data on the drive and the size of the filesystem. On a 100 GB HDD the filesystem will be smaller as the amount of data stored occupies a smaller amount of disk capacity. On a 1 Terabyte HDD 85% of total used capacity requires a corresponding size of directory. As I understand it the size of the directory varies in direct relationship with the amount of data stored on the drive and not to the total capacity of the HDD. The Micromat study (sorry, I have lost the link for that reference) found that the optimal capacity was 85% to avoid directory corruption.
As I noted in earlier posts, the equation may have changed with the advent of larger capacity drives, but I am not aware of documentation to that effect. I should also add that I am not by any means an expert. However, I am not willing to test to see how crowded my HDD has to be before I encounter an unrecoverable directory.
My asking for support for statements made is not by way of debate. I earnestly seek to learn more about this and other subjects from those who have information I do not, myself, have.

  • Satellite Pro A10 - Does SP2 or 3 slow down the XP performance?

    Hi,
I have a Satellite Pro A10 PSA15E which over the years had become very slow.
Recently I upgraded it's RAM from 256 to the maximum 1gb to try to speed things up but it did not help.
Next I reformatted the hard disc and reloaded the system using the Toshiba recovery disks. This worked fine and the system performance was excellent. However, with on-line security in mind, I loaded Windows SP2 ( with a view to subsequently go to SP3) and this has taken the system back to where I started - very, very slow, in fact pretty well unusable.
Does anyone know if Toshiba support SP2 and SP3 on this model of laptop?
If so how do you install them without killing performance?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi!
I think SP2 or SP3 is supported on this Toshiba notebook because both Service Packs are contains really important security updates and I think this is not the problem.
If you install SP2 or SP3 you will also get the Security center and better Windows firewall. Maybe you should disable both services because the slow down the system performance (I always disable both services).
Just go to start => run => services.msc and disable both services and set the start up type to disabled.
    Bye

  • Why does my AI acquisition slow down to my frequency measurement rate?

I'm using Labview/Daqmx to program my SCXI 1520 and TC modules while at the same time using the multifunction capabilities of the E-card controlling the SCXI.  This has been fairly easy until I wanted to use the frequency and counter measurements (outputs/DIO works great).  I'm using a waveform with buffered acquisition for the read on the AI channels and obviously there is no waveform for the frequency measurement so I'm just combining the signals using the dynamic data.  This works great when my input frequency is higher than my acquisition frequency.  When my input frequency is lower than my acquisition frequency the acquisition slows down to that frequency and the AI read falls behind (buffer fills while waiting for another frequency measurement).  I'm assuming the frequency read is not keeping up with AI read.  I understand that as the frequency is reduced it takes more time to calculate the frequency.  So how do I "read" the frequency measurement at the same rate as the AI data?  I'm fine with using the last frequency measurement until a new frequency measurement is available but I can't even seem to be able to do that.
An example of the problem is measurement of vehicle pedal force (AI channel) with pulse input for vehicle speed.  Assuming 100 Hz acquisition and the vehicle stopped or going slow (very slow pulse train) I should be able to acquire data at 100 Hz even if I just use the last data point for the frequency channel until another point is available.
    Please help, thanks.

Basically, the very fact that you're *doing* a frequency read suggests that you don't know the expected freq ahead of time, and probably suggests that it can vary.  The waveform datatype assumes a constant interval between samples which wouldn't generally be true for frequency measurement, and that's why you can't use it.  Since the actual timestamps of the frequency measurements are NOT the same as those in the analog waveform, it's likely a mistake to pretend they are.
My method is to create my own array of "timestamps" for the frequency data.  Create a For loop with a shift register initialized to 0 from outside the loop.  Let your freq array auto-index the loop.  On each element, perform (1/x).  Add result to the left-hand shift register value and write it to both the right-hand shift register and to an auto-indexing output.  When the loop completes, the output array will hold timestamps that correlate to your freq measurements.  From there you can choose whether to display on an X-Y Graph, or whether to perform some interpolations to calculate freqs at the analog sample times or vice versa.

  • Does new Airport Extreme slow down when used with Airport Express?

    Maybe this is self-evident.
If get the new Airport extreme and use an old airport express to extend it, will signal slow down to the old speed?
Does the AE have a greater range? Perhaps I don't need the Express to extend.
I live in NYC and there are so many signals in the air. It seems like having the additional airport helps keep me connected.
    Thanks.

The airport express is g technology not n technology, so it will be at least as slow as your old network. Also, I'm not sure but I think the the range will be a bit longer than with the old g system, but does not have the full potential of an n system.
I've set up my new system but none of my machines are n capable. I extended the system using my old expresses. The speed of the system is no greater than what it was before the n.
I bought the system to upgrade my technology because everytime my Applecare runs out, I get a new computer which isn't too far down the road. I've purchased an Apple TV which will also work better with the n technology when I upgrade. It's either buy it now or buy it later. I'm also hoping that some third party like Belkin will develop a PCIX card to provide n technology to those of my computers that aren't currently n capable. I'm sure there is many like me out there.

  • Why does ADF scanning dramatically slow down on HP7510?

    Hi,
I have a 27" iMAC running Lion and am using the PDFScanner app for capturing scans from my HP Photosmart 7510 multifuction printer. However, I am trying to figure out why scanning slows WAY down after the first hundred or so pages. Here's what happened:
I unpacked my new 7510 and enjoyed a couple hours of scanning and digital filing using the auto document feeder (ADF). The 7510 then started taking about 40 second to scan a single page, no change of settings, would just hang up for 30 seconds with the page half way in the scanner. I thought it was maybe a thermal management issue so I shut it down and let it cool off for an hour. First page out of the gate took that same 40 seconds. I decreased DPI all the way to 100, changed the color to black and white and did everything else I could think of. Scans were fine, just painfully slow.
So I called HP customer support, they suggested I plug the unit straight into a wall because maybe it was starved for power through the UPC. Wierd... but I did it. No help. Here's the kicker: She asked me to take the computer out of the loop entirely and use the ADF to copy a page only. I did, took the same 40ish seconds.
She said there was something probably mechanically wrong with the printer and gave me an RA #. Got it swapped out with a new unit, had another couple of hours of fast, clean scanning (but I went much more slowly this time), and bam, one random page (and every page thereafter) is now back to being 40 or so seconds to scan. It would normally take maybe 5-7 seconds to scan at 300 DPI.
Flatbed scanning does not seem to be effected. So, given that the unit does it when the computer is not being used, this seems like a printer problem... right? Could HP be throttling its users? I sure hope note. Anyone have any ideas?

I know this is an old post, but in case others end up here looking for a solution.
This is a "feature" of the 7510.  Quoting from their support site:
The behavior that you are seeing  in your printer is normal in that product, this printer is merely  design to home users where their needs are not as high compared to business users. The unit  reduces its speed to prevent overheating the motor in the Automatic-Document-Feeder (ADF). So, there is nothing wrong with that behavior  and you can still use it even if the speed of scanning or copying through  the ADF reduces. I hope this information is helpful.
What this means is that after 75 sheets pass through the ADF, it paues ~20 seconds between scans.  It's not clear when or how this resets.  It's also apparent that, for whatever reason, their tech support is not always aware of the issue.
There are several threads about this problem at the HP support forums.  Here's a major one:

  • HT2055 Why does iPhoto crash or slow down my system significantly?

When I use iPhoto to import or work on my photos, it slows the entire system down big time and iPhoto itself continuously shuts down and I have to reopen. Just to import photos it takes several attempts to successfully get them imported to iPhoto. I love iPhoto and what it does but it is killing my system! Help!

What version of iPhoto and system are your running?  How much free space do you have on your boot drive. Post just the first 50 lines of the crash report.

  • Why does my LR 6 slow down with Graphics Processor Acceleration turned on?

Just upgraded to LR 6 and I am noticing that my editing in the Develop Module is slower than LR 5. I saw that my GPU acceleration was turned on... I edited about 100 photos and the lag between clicking on a photo until it was ready for me to adjust sliders was about 1/5 to 2 seconds.
I disabled GPU acceleration and the average click-to-edit time went down to about .5 seconds... What gives?
I have an i5 PC with onboard Intel 4000 graphics.
I'm considering getting an Nvidia GT 740 if it would help but I don't just want to burn $100 when I don't have to.
    Thanks for any help!

I just updated my phone 2 days ago (Xperia SP). It's frustratingly slow and has trouble loading up at times.
IS there a way to undo an update

    Hey,
I tried the Sony Update Service, it didn't have the Xperia SP on it, I'm not sure what to do. Would I got to Sony or my network provider to resolve this issue? I've tried emailing Sony, but they're pretty lousy at getting back to me.

  • Does Airport Express 'g' slow down an 'n' Base Station network?

I've got a network of 2 computers and a printer on an Airport Extreme 'n' Base Station. I've recently added the original Airport Express ('g') to that network to take advantage of AirTunes. Do I compromise the speed of the network by introducing a slower device into it?
If so, is there different behavior for wired vs. wireless connections? My laptop is wireless, my MacPro does not have Airport and is hardwired to the network.
I want to buy another Airport Extreme for another room. The new one will be 'n' so there would be two AE's connected, each different. Will everything run to it's maximum potential?

And I take it all this does not affect the speed for the Ethernet connected components?
Assuming there's no intervening wireless connection, yes.
PS - Lazarus describes nicely how a b/g/n base station should work, ideally, but as he implies, "dual-band" doesn't mean "two transceivers" necessarily ("two antennas", yes). As I understand it, the 802.11n spec requires that the device also be capable of b/g operation, so it would have to be able to transceive at 2.4 and 5 GHz -- but perhaps not at the same time, so maybe one transceiver is enough.
In any case, I've seen posts that agree with Chris Brown's description of how the AEBSn behaves.
