Does anybod know a solid way to open .xml files made by Word 2003 SP2?

I've heard some rumblings about MS Office 12 finally supporting a relatively open xml based document format by default. Well I was looking around when I noticed that Word 2003 for windows can save in xml format. In theory it should be able to opened by any application that supports the schema.
Does anybody know of a Mac app that can open this format properly? I tried Pages but some of the formatting doesn't come out exactly right.

I was hoping for something that would show the file as if it were open under Word. TextWrangler and Smultron show the underlying xml code and the pictures show up as garbled text. I suspect that garbled parts are the proprietary components still in affect…
I'm surprised that there seems to be little support for this format so far. Though if the format being outputted by Word 2003 were truly standard, support would have probably cropped up by now. After my last few efforts at opening the file I can only come the conclusion that the current xml implementation is half-assed.
One more question, does anybody know if the .xml files made by Word 2003 are going to be the same kind of .xml files outputted by Office 12?
