Does anyone feel EDGE is slowing down?

When I first got the phone yesterday morning, I ran a test using http://dslreports.com/mspeed/ and I got almost 90kbps. I just ran the same test again and it only shows 23kbps - slower than a dial-up. Anyone got the same experience?

160k? No kidding? I can't believe EDGE in NY is that bad.

Does adding applicaions to Dock slow down start up time? I'm thinking about placing the whole creative suite on dock but I'm unsure whether it will slow down time it takes to start up my laptop, please help.

On the dock? Not particularly. If you have things starting up with the computer then yes.
Having lots of stuff on your desktop does though.
    Best of luck.

Why does Acrobat Pdf converter file slow down my 2003, Windows  Word Program.  I only experience this problem when i convert a pdf file to a doc file.

Hi Bill -- thanks for your reply!
When I check the Document Properties on Acrobat I can see that the fonts used in the document (Cambria, Times and Windings) are listed as "Embedded Subset" in the Fonts panel. The machine it was created on did use an earlier version of OS X and an old version of Word, but it seems to have the proper fonts...

  • Edge project slowing down

    Hey there,
I've been recreating a Flash project in Edge (so that it can run on mobile devices). It's a "pre-lab" for students here at our university, where the student can go through a chemistry lab before actually doing the real world lab.
I've laid it out roughly from beginging to end, but when I run it on different browsers on a mac, pc or iPad2 the button clicks become slower and slower in response (as if it's running out memory) halfway through the prelab.
I've stripped back all the graphics off the timeline except for the important buttons and it still does the same thing. Do I need to delete all non-related images and symbols out of the Assets window? Or is it because I've been using transparent png's and should be using SVG's (but that doesnt answer why it's still slow when I strip back the project).
The only errors I'm getting in Chrome's Console is this:
event.returnValue is deprecated. Please use the standard event.preventDefault() instead.
Javascript error in event handler! Event Type = timeline edge.2.0.1.min.js:162
Javascript error in event handler! Event Type = timeline edge.2.0.1.min.js:162
Javascript error in event handler! Event Type = timeline edge.2.0.1.min.js:162
Would this be why it's slowing down?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi elainefinnell,
i'd say there would be around 50 (~200x200) transparent png's like so (where the character, objects like coat, goggles, bottles, etc are seperate symbols)...
with a zoom into the objects (thus the objects had to be at a higher dpi)
and a animated book opening that fills most of the screen
but then I stripped all the graphics out except the next and back buttons and it was still slowing down
And should I be using SVG's anyhow (especially if it's very flat colour artwork)?

  • I feel like my iPad 2 loses it's charge too fast does anyone feel that way too?

I feel like my ipad2 loses it's charge too fast it's brand new does anyone have the same issue?

No.  But there are things to watch out for, to save your battery.  Do you completely close down your apps, at least periodically?   If not, some apps may be communicating or performing work in the background, using up power.  To check, double click the Home button.  A list of recently used apps appears along the bottom.  Press one for a few seconds until they all wiggle.  Then press the x to close them.  Admittedly many apps are not designed to multi-task, but for those that do, they keep working in the background.  Also, how high is your brightness setting.  I keep mine near the low end.  Brightness also chews up power - a lot.  Do you keep your bluetooth on?

  • Does using an external HD slow down iMovie?

I have stored about 6000 photos on my hard drive. I believe it may be slowing down my computer, so I have thought about buying a separate drive just for iPhoto and iMovie. Would that be a good idea? If so, would I expect the program to run more slowly when working from this external drive? It was suggested to me that I buy the NewerTech ministack V2. That drive is available in a number of sizes. Should I select 320, 400, or 500GB, if I buy that one? Do you have other suggestions? Thanks for any advice you can offer. I am not a techie, I just like to make movies. Miriam

It seems that you're sensibly thinking ahead, and preparing for any trouble!
The external disc(s) wouldn't normally be backed up to .Mac, but if you copy your iPhoto Library and Movies to another destination - as well as to the disc you'll normally keep them on - then you should be well covered.
Your Mercury On the Go drive is probably quite small (60GB or 80GB), so why not use that for your iPhoto Library?
I've got 11,000 photos in my Library, and it uses up 33GB. So you could easily fit your 6,000 photos on your On The Go drive. Moving your iPhoto Library onto that external disc would clear, say, 16GB or so from your internal disc; enough for another hour's worth of DV video editing.
Then you could use a larger capacity external FireWire disc for backups - instead of the On The Go ..and backups would probably run faster - and you could also edit movies on that fast disc, as long as you kept a backup of them on another disc!
Editing movies which are on an external fast FireWire disc generally allows things to run faster, as the internal disc can simultaneously do its own 'housekeeping' duties, or swapping things in and out of memory, or reading bits of program from the internal disc ..while all video data transfers happen exclusively on the external disc.
That's the way professionals edit: always keeping video files on a fast external - or second internal - disc.
The only problem which comes to mind is that some Canon camcorders don't like to be on the FireWire circuit along with any other FW device, such as a separate external disc. If you do have a Canon camcorder, you may need to import to your Mac's internal disc first, then disconnect the Canon camcorder and then copy that imported video to your external disc for editing.
But it's late here, and I gotta go to bed ..bye for now!

  • Why does my data logging program slow down after a while?

A data logging program created with Labview 5.1. Slows down after a few weeks and creates files in the Temp. directory.Computer is Siemens Scenic pro 124 MB ram and AT-MIO-16XE50 Data acquisition board. Also using Solartron Dig. probes and Fieldpoint units.

Any chance that you are using Win 95/88/ME? Those OS's have well documented
memory leaks which will consume all your available memory if an application
is run long enough. Also there are some issues of memory management within
LabView in the allocation of memory.
The solution to the first is to switch to WinNT/2K. The second will be much
    more difficult.

  • Why does Safari v5.1.9 slow down?

I recently switched from Firefox to Safari v5.1.9 because I found Firefox too slow.  Now it seems that Safari slows down a lot over time.  Scrolling becomes jerky and sometimes pauses.  Pages don't load/pause and I have to stop loading and restart loading.  I have a white Macbook circa 2008 with Snow Leopard v10.6.8 installed with all available updates installed.  I am running the current version of Safari v5.9.1 for Snow Leopard.  If I quit Safari and restart it, the software goes back to normal speed.  I often have 11+ tabs open and almost never shut down and restart my machine.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Thanks for your response.  This morning I did some experimenting.  I ran the Activity Monitor and checked memory usage when Safari had run since yesterday, then I quit Safari and checked, and finally I restarted Safari and checked a 3rd time.  Below is a chart I made of the memory usage where the first number is prior Safari, the second number is without Safari, and the third number is after rerunning Safari.  BTW:  I have 4 GB RAM installed and have 12 tabs open in Safari.  Oh, and when I restarted Safari, 5 of the 12 tabs would not reload.  I had to close the tabs, open new ones and go back to the web sites manually.
Application - Prior Memory Usage - After Restart of Safari
Safari Web Content 1.10 GB - 441.9 MB
    Safari 236.8 MB - with 12 tabs open - 230.8 MB
Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) 116.2 MB - 59.6 MB
Memory when computer opened from sleep - after quitting Safari - after restarting Safari
    Free: 664.6 MB - 2.27 GB - 1.69 GB
    Wired: 453.7 MB - 448.7 MB - 452.3 MB
    Active: 2.42 GB - 847.8 MB - 1.53 GB
    Inactive: 498.0 MB - 471.5 MB - 337.1 MB
    Used: 3.35 GB - 1.73 GB - 2.31 GB
I seems pretty clear to me that Safari uses an extraordinary amount of memory over time and it keeps taking more causing Safari to slow down.  This is what a memory leak looks like.  It's hard to believe that Safari is so buggy when it has been revised so many times.
Thanks again for your idea.  I guess the only solution is to periodically quit Safari and restart it.  I think I will check Firefox memory usage later today to see if I should switch back.

  • Anyone else having DSL slow down in Queens (zip 11366)

Only getting 800 to 900k when I have a 3MB plan. This is regular Verizon DSL and not FIOS. It has been going on for at least a week but maybe longer and I just didn't notice it.
Verizon thinks there is a problem with the line but in the past this has happened, it was always some sort of line slow down on their end. Last 2 technicians that came here for similar problems years ago did nothing except waste time. The guy was actually checking to see if my computer was infected with virus. The problem was never solved and it went away after awhile.

If you're on 3MB plan and geting only 1.01MB, we're both having similar problems. I don't have a phone problem but I am using a landline though.
When I called Verizon earlier, there was a recorded message with service problems in BK. BK and South Queens are very close. It could be related to that.

  • Does anyone feel that Macbook easily gets too warm?

I was a PC user and I never felt my IBM gets warm this easily. Is it common to macbook, or I need to take my computer to Support to check it up?
It looks to me that my vent doesnt have the plastic cover over it as an earlier post has suggested.

yes, my 2Ghz MB gets warm very quickly after a cold start, given the CPU isn't working hard. The CPU cores are at about 60C as others have said.
Not tried to measure the case's temp, but it is not lap-able, just like my older, P4 (around 1.6-1.8Ghz) notebooks, ThinkPad T, Dell D320 and HP/Compaq nc6000. It is obvious.
The MB is powerful, CPU not usually working too hard. But when I imported 2Gb to iphoto, the CPU had enough work to kick in the fans. It got a bit noiser but it cools down so much that I thought it was definitely cooler than normal. I have a feeling that Apple has set the firmware to tollerate 60C at idle but spin the fans regardless of temperature when CPU is constantly under load.
I would recommend you to get a sleeve or something. I bought the standard sleeve from Wrappers (their heat protecting one is out of stock) and it is now lap-able. MB's design doesn't require me to give airflow to the bottom (unlike my old HP) so it didn't make it even warmer. In fact, even a magazine would do the trick. This is my 1 of only 2 problems with the MB, the other being stupidly low max volume on the speakers even though it clearly can handle much more!

  • Does Anyone Feel That Palm's Repair Service Seems Shaky?

My Palm TX suffered from the same headphone socket defect that many other TX owners posted about.  The socket worked fine for a while but then the internal switch jammed and the external speaker no longer worked.  I made a call to service and set up a repair.  It sounded simple enough. Ship the unit to us and we will fix it. A person by the name of "Nobody" from Innovate-It.com sent me the SRO number and shipping details on 11/25 and off I went to the post office on 11/26. I shipped it USPS with tracking, delivery confirmation and insurance.  The post office tracking was going well until 11/26 when the message "Missent" appeared in the tracking information. Missent? Where did it go?Then on 12/01 the message "Notice Left" came up in the activity alerts.  Where exactly is the repair center that no one was there at 12:15 p.m.? It sounded like they were dropping it off at someone's house and no one was home.
Here is what I know so far about Palm's repair service.  From what I have researched, Innovate-It is a repair logistics subset of a Netherlands-based software development company and has other clients besides Palm.  (Why does everything need to be outsourced? I would pay more for a Palm if they would just keep tech support in-house. But in this global economy nothing is 100% "Made in USA" anyway so it comes as no surprise).
The unit was finally delivered on 12/02 but the Self Service page did not indicate "In Repair" until 12/08 at 2:33 p.m.  and it has not changed since. How long does it take to diagnose a simple audio circuit?  If people have been able to remedy this issue with WD-40 on a Q-Tip WITHOUT opening the unit, what is the holdup at the repair center for a warranty repair in which it is OK to open the casing? Furthermore, the confirmation email says that DHL is supposed to deliver the unit back to me and the Self Service page gives a tracking link page for FedEx.  I am worried about my TX getting home at all.  Aren't there any repair centers in the Chicagoland area authorized by Palm?
To summarize  We spend enough on the unit itself and then have to pay to ship it to a repair facility to which no contact is possible and our only indication anything is going on is Self Service screen that gives little details about where a work order is in the cue, what the turnaround time will be, and when it will be returned. "No need to call us[?]" I think the repair facility needs to have a contact number available for customers to check on their repairs.  A total quality product includes the people who stand behind it.  That includes support and repair personnel.  Right now, service is not scoring points with me.
UPDATE: PLEASE SEE MY NEW THREAD "Palm's Shaky Repair Service Has Found Solid Ground". The rapid response to this message impressed me, and I felt it was appropriate to acknowledge their efforts.
