Does anyone have a camcorder recommendation?

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a mini-DV camcorder in the $400-500 price range that will work well with iMovie 6? I assume firewire is required. MacMall has several cameras that say they are Mac compatible but don’t have firewire. What’s up with that? Does this mean they expect you to import via USB? Some have iLink but say no firewire. I thought they were the same or similar. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

I am looking for a new camcorder as well in the same price range. Been looking at the Canon Elura line or a few Sonys. Just upgraded to iLife 06 and would like to get a new camcorder. Ideally, one that would have analog a/v inputs as well. I have lots of analog tape to convert to digital and bring into iLife as well as planning on shooting new footage and would like the best compromise. Any specific models I should be looking for and/or steering away from? Otherwise, I'll just get a Mac compatible digital camera and get a 3rd party VHS to digital converter...Any thoughts?

  • Does anyone have any new recommendations to help iTunes recognize that my 128 iPhone and 128 iPad aren't 16 GB models?

I have suffered from this problem for years, but since upgrading to 128 iOS devices in September, the mysterious iTunes/iOS hidden data disease has gotten intolerable. Here's the deal:
I use my iPhone and iPad mostly for media consumption. I don't have a ton of apps. I have lots of videos, music through iTunes Match, and a few pictures. I'm one of those dinosaurs who doesn't use the cloud but downloads it, stores it, and syncs it via USB frequently (which I would bet is the root of my problem). Although I have a large capacity devices, I sync almost daily. And each time I sync, my displayed free space and the space iTunes allows me to use differs more and more. Old fixes used to involve such things as restoring the devices, turning off automatic syncing, turning off photo syncing, turning off other syncing apps, etc. And these things were temporary fixes.
Let me give you an example of what I mean by temporary. It has been exactly eight days since I last restored my iPad to brand spanking new, retaining nothing. In those eight days and approximately eight or nine manual USB syncs, each with an average of 60 GB transferred, I mysteriously have managed to lose 40 GB. This afternoon during my most recent sync, iTunes showed 86.3 GB free. However, as usual, it wouldn't sync anything close to that. By the time I had whittled my selections down to an acceptable amount, it still showed I had 47.2 GB free both in iTunes and in Settings on the iPad. Yet when tested it by trying to sync a 50 MB app, it said there was not enough available space. In days past, problems like this would take weeks or maybe even months to accumulate. And the culprit would usually be the "Other" category. When that happened, the remedies I described would help. This new beast is something else, though. Like I said, this took only eight days.
I finally decided to post something, though, after I reset my iPhone to factory settings this evening. When I was syncing the initial apps and videos, it would not let me sync more than 30 GB of material. I don't know what to do, guys. I bought the maximum capacity devices because I like my HD content. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? If you say I just need to sync less, (1), Apple needs to get its act together, and (2) It might sound crazy, but I can probably only push it to 2 days, so I'd only be postponing my problems a few days.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Forgive me if this has been addressed elsewhere. I have spent time searching, but all I found was the answers I have already tried numerous times.

I got my baby iPhone the day it came out. Seriously, I love it. I'm not really mad about the price drop, a little frusterated, but I knew what I was getting myself into when I purchased mine so early. But, now that I know there are ringtones in the future, I just can't wait.
So basically, does anyone know for sure when we will be able to get the ringtones? And what about iTunes on the iPhone, when will that pop up? I'm sure these questions have been posted already, but I just can't seem to find a sure answer.
I'm worried that it is just my iPhone/computer that can't find the update to get all the cool new feautres, any help?
    thanks in advance!

  • Does anyone have a good recommendation for a tutorial that will get me started quickly?

I just bought imovie for my macbook pro.  (I thought it was supposed to come with it)  Anyway, I am under the gun to complete a project.  Are there any tutorials that you would recommend for a beginner who needs to use imovie for basic functions for the time being?

What versions of OS X and iMovie are you running?
iMovie is part of the iLife suite and comes bundled with every new Mac.

  • Does anyone have experience with using a Canon Vixia HF M52 Camcorder with Final Cut Express?

I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder that is compatible with my Mac OS X (10.6.8) that will work well with Final Cut Express 4.0.1  I have downloaded the camcorder support info from Final Cut Express that list many capital camcorders.  I've used Sony tape based camcorders in the past.  I'm looking for High Definition.  I can stick with a tape based camcorder, but thought I would look at the Canon Vixia HF M52 as an alternative, which is listed as compatible.  I would like to download directly from the camera to FCE.  I film in the wilderness, like having an optical zoom of 20 or greater (yes, I use a small tripod). Does anyone have experience with the Canon Vixia?  And if not, but you really like another camcorder that you can recommend, what is it?

The Vixia HF M52 is an AVCHD camcorder and should work perfectly fine with Final Cut Express 4 (4.0.1).
The published "camcorder support list" has never been up to date and I would not take it to be a definitive list of compatible camcorders.
One note, however, the Vixia HF M52 supports a number of different shooting modes.  I suggest sticking with the AVCHD 1920 x 1080i / 60 fps mode for use with FCE.   FCE does not support progressive modes except in 720p25/30 (which the M52 does not seem to shoot anyway); nor does FCE support any 24 fps modes.

Have you ever been able to sync your iPod shuffle to iTunes on your computer, or has something recently occurred?  Are you working with a Mac or a PC?   Without knowing what has been recommended to you, I'm going to start here with the basics troubleshooting for this issue.

Do I need to run and anti virus program with MAC OSX Lion? Have heard different opinions!
You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

I'm about to buy a keyboard, does anyone have a recommendation re best connectivity with Garageband? I've read about difficulties in this area

Most any USB keyboard is fine, it's a matter of budget and what keyboard tactile feel you prefer... they all work by plugging a USB cable from the keyboard to the computer and are recognized automatically.
Most have either a shift button that permits some mapping of instruments and other MIDI advanced stuff, others have dedicated buttons and displays. But any of them out of the box in default configuration is plug and play.

Then it either is a pirate clone or you are misinformed.
Apple Computer has never used AMD processors in its products.
However, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a Radeon unit, which is an AMD subsidiary. Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox will all work fine with the Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU that powers the Mac, and use the AMD Radeon GPU that drives the displays.

  • Monitoring Software - Does anyone have recommendations?

    Hi,
I'm looking for monitoring software for WebLogic 6.0. Does anyone have
    recommendations for certain products?
    Daniel

For performance monitoring, I have had good experience with the Precise
Indepth for J2EE product. There is a competing product from Wily &
Associates, but I haven't used it. BMC also provides a monitoring plugin
for Weblogic, but I don't think it is performance related -- it is more an
event-raising product more in line with older big iron monitoring products
    that I've used.
You might also want to check out Peakstone, Securant and Manage.com. They
all had somewhat related products at the BEA eWorld show.

I have an iPod Nano 6th Generation for just over three months and the down volume button is sticking.  Does anyone have a recommendation for resolving?

Dont buy this model again, this is the most common problem and i have gone through 4 of these 6th gen nanos all with the same problem.  You can find youtube videos that show you how to fix it yourself but you run the risk of breaking your ipod, also opening the ipod voids any warrently.

  • Does anyone have experience with laptop/computer tracking software?

    Hi all,
I travel a bit for work, and the last software I bought for this purpose turned out to be completely useless.
The laptop is "located" usually nowhere near where my computer actually is, in fact I can't remember the last time the location was correct.
In the past 11 months my laptop was "located" in South Carolina when I was actually in New Orleans, Colorado when I'm in Wisconsin, and Eau Claire, Wisconsin when I'm in Madison, WI.
What use is a computer tracking app if it can't get the computer's location right?
I've heard about Project Prey, or Prey software--does anyone have any experience/feedback with this tracking software?
BTW, the tracking software I last used is MacPhoneHome--avoid at all costs.
Whenever I tried to contact them to try and figure out the issues I'm having, my correspondence was ignored until the fourth or fifth attempt, and when they did respond to me it took weeks for a response, and the response was always a very unhelpful, unsatisfactory answer.
And after all the time and frustration (and expense) of dealing with MPH, the software still doesn't work correctly.
    Take care,
    Brian

The OS X app is called Find My Mac.  All you need to do to enable it is
go to System Preferences > iCloud and check Find My Mac.
You can then track it (and your other registered Apple devices) using iCloud.com.
I highly recommend it.  It has features to disable itself or wipe itself clean if lost or stolen.

  • I can't open any attachments on gmail, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix?

I can't seem to open up any attachments in gmail.   Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix?   Thank you

    Hello Jim,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with opening attachments in Mail on your iPad.
I recommend following these steps for an issue like this (you can skip 4 because it does not relate to the issue you are experiencing and any other steps you may have taken):
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:

If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPad before performing the restore:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Does anyone have a black N82 that's working fine?

I'm deciding on buying a black N82 soon, but I'm still deciding if I would rather prefer the Bold 9000 over the N82. I was just wondering after seeing all these topics about problems with N82, black, that does anyone have one that's been working fine for a while now?
    Thanks.
Edit: Also, I was wondering after reading some reviews about the N82, are the cases all plastic? And if so, are they good quality? Meaning do they feel sturdy and not cheap?
What are the pros and cons about the N82, and after listing them and experiencing them, would you still recommend this as a buy?
And I've also heard that this phone doesn't support US 3G, is this true?
    Thanks again.
Message Edited by drewhy on 25-Aug-2008 07:16 PM

I work in telecommunications, so I often get to test the different stuff that is on the market, and I picked the N82 because it was proving to be the most stable and reliable of Nokia's smartphones. Nokia has the most extensive range of any of the big manufacturers, and whatever you may read against Nokia from some less-experienced users on this forum, reliability and updates are no picnic on other companies' smartphones (and here it is important to distinguish between a normal GSM phone and a smartphone - the latter has a limited OS that runs preinstalled apps plus a few JAVA apps; whereas a smartphone is much closer to a computer than a mere phone.
Aside from the basics of making and receiving calls and messages, I use a lot the camera, music/video players, mobile internet and sat-nav.
I have taken some fantastic photos with the camera, ignore the 5MP - this is just a technicality, most cameraphones can't begin to compete with a standard digital camera of similar specs. I have found the picture quality of this phone sharp with excellent colour quality, even in poor light which is one area where most cameraphones (inlcuding my old SE K800i) fall down. One downside is that the shutter speed is slow in most modes - I have some brilliant shots of the Red Arrows' smoke trails from the recent Sanicole airshow at Hechtel, but the planes themselves proved pretty elusive, so is lacks a bit when taking action shots.
The video quality of the camera is also good, it produces excellent VGA-quality video (which is good enough to watch through the TV with the provided cable), though sound reproduction could perhaps be a little better.
The phone plays MP4 movies vey well, and music playback is also good - the sound from the stereo speakers is reasonable for such a device, and the headphones produce good sound (there are lots of people moaning with all modern phones that volume levels are not high enough, but in twenty years time they'll be thanking today's phones for not deafening them). The only catch is that the music player isn't always very versatile to use. I have a language course CD copied onto my memory card which I tend to access through File Manager. Having said that, I have yet to encounter any phone with a really good music player; they are designed to play music whilst you're mobile, they don't seem to imagine that you might be on a work break, in a hotel or just relaxing in in the garden and so be in a position to take more personal control over your music.
The internet is brilliant, as the phone has a good inbuilt WLAN system. I live in Belgium, where the mobile internet is expensive, so I rely on being able to use my home or work WLAN or hotspots out in the town. Unlike most mobiles, S60 smartphones have a proper web browser that can view web sites almost as a PC would (allowing, of course for the smaller screen size), and it is much better than the Microsoft Mobile Internet Explorer that I've used in some PDAs and other branded smartphones. The only real snag (which is common in the breed) is that you can't update things like Flash so if a new version comes out, you have to wait for a full software update to the phone and hope it contains this updated feature.
Another thing I use more and more in preference to the old system I have is the Nokia Maps sat-nav system, even N82s sold with the latest software (v20) come with the old 1.2 version, but update it to 2.0 and it is maturing into a nice package. The only real snag here is the size of the screen, though it did let me down last week on the way home from Antwerp when I left the road due to roadworks and I had to pull up in a service area and restart the app to make it recalculate the route. Only one problem in four months, though, I can forgive that.
I handle phones of different types all day at work, and I definitely don't regret buying this one.
