Does anyone have a PA271W, 2010 Mac Pro, and 5870 working via DisplayPort?

Hi All,
There are numerous threads about multi-monitor and resume-from-sleep issues with Mac Pro 2010 (5,1) and ATI 5870. There is also one thread in this forum with another user having problems with DisplayPort (henceforth, "DP") on his PA271W, but he has other issues that point to power supply or some other kind of problem.
My problem is that my brand new Mac Pro won't drive my PA271W at all with a mini-DP to DP cable. The same PA271W will drive fine from the secondary output of my iMac. The same PA271W will also work fine on the Mac Pro with DVI.
Apple sent me a replacement 5870 today, and it exhibits the same behavior. I'm trying to determine which of the following is the case:
a) 2010 MP, ATI 5870, and PA271W are an impossible combination that doesn't work.
b) My 2010 MP has some weird issue that makes the 5870 and PA271W not work.
Unfortunately, I don't have another DP monitor to swap the third variable. I've swapped the second variable courtesy Apple. I'd rather not swap the first variable until I absolutely know that's the problem, because it's a huge hassle to disassemble and reassemble another machine.
Anyone already have this exact configuration working okay?
Thanks,
Ben

To answer your question based on what I have seen and inferred so far:
a) I think there's some odd interaction b/w the PA271W, the 5870, and some diagnostic message the 5870 send to the logic board.
b) I don't think this is the case (alternatively ALL 2010 MPs are screwed up!). I was at the Apple store yesterday and tried both a 30" + dual-link miniDP adapter and a 24" miniDP monitors with no issues at all. There's clearly and issue between the PA271W and the 5870, I think.
My PA271W + miniDP/DP cable work fine on both a '09 mac mini and a '09 macbook pro 17". On the mac pro, I cannot boot with it's connected to the miniDP, but it works fine when connected to the DVI port. I can actually connect the PA271W to the miniDP after booting, and this actually works fine, but I'm not going to be doing this every time, too much of a pain.
One important clue (I think): If the mac pro is switched OFF and the PA271W is switched ON, the overcurrent LED light (right next to the CPU) will light up. What this indicates to me is not that there's a power issue (as I originally thought) but that somehow the 5870 is reporting to the mac that something really nasty is connected to it's miniDP connector, and that the mac should not boot.
A poster suggested I disable the DDC/IC on the PA271W. I have the impression this might work (will try tonight). Spectraview can use the USB port for communication with the monitor so I don't think this would be a problem.

i have verify that all the components are almost the same please advice why because i was able to previously airply movies why not now that i have the latest os x mountain lion

iTunes airplay still works as it always has.
AirPlay Mirroring (the ML-added feature) requires the latest Intel hardware (specifically the Intel HD Graphics subprocessor).  This hardware includes a feature called QuickSync Video (similar to HDMI-over-wifi).
There is no 'almost' have it.  Either you do or you do not.  It wasn't an arbitrary decision by Apple to deny older Macs of this hardware feature.

    Hi Thomas,
I can confirm the problem you are hitting. The XML test trace does not get recognized at all, and it defaults to Eclipse's basic Open File behaviour. I am not sure if it's because the format definition is missing, or if it's because something prevents the trace type from being recognized. I will open a bug about it.
    Thanks for identifying this issue!
In the meantime, if you'd like to experiment with XML analyses, you can also take a look at the example at https://github.com/tracecompass/xml-analysis-example .

    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

  • Does anyone who owns a 2011 Mac Pro 17' also has a weak-wireless connections from the router? Seek for the solutions

Hi, I have just brought the 17' Mac book Pro two months ago. However, I found out that this new laptop's wireless connection is unstable. Compare with my 2010 13' Mac Pro  and ipad2, the result is significantly responsible with the new wireless card model.(Correct me if I am wrong)
Hence, I am looking for a solution because I frequently skype with my oversea family members. I appreciate for your time and help

  • Apple Remote Desktop, 2010 Mac Pro, and six displays

Under 10.8, we were able to operate a 2010 Mac Pro (MacPro5,1) with 2 x HD5770 video cards and 6 x LED Cinema Displays (the mini DisplayPort models, two of them via IUSB-powered Atlona DVI Dual-Link-to-mDP adapters, via Apple Remote Desktop.
Under 10.9 (currently 10.9.2), all the displays still work, but ARD is having significant heartburn: if it is able to connect with the ARD agent on the display syste, the display arrangement is incorrect, and no amount of swapping mDP cables, moving the displays around in the Displays System Preference pane, and/or rebooting appears to help. Oh, and the most recent end state, when I finally managed to get the menu bar on one of the displays on the top (physical) row (we have them arranged 2 x 3, in order to display 4096 x 4096 pixel movies of spacecraft data), flummoxed ARD completely --- it simply refused to connect with the display machine at all. (I can ssh into the display system and use a cabled keyboard and mouse as well, but that's not a long-term solution: we have to be able to operate remotely, as we did under 10.8.) Oddly, ARD works OK, if not perfectly every time, with the target system when it's only connected to four or fewer displays (regardless of whether they're connected to mDP ports or via the Atlona devices). The host ARD system is another MacPro5,1 with 24 Gbyte of RAM; the target has 96 Gbyte.
Reading the release notes for ARD 3.7.2, it sounded as though all our issues would be addressed, but alas, it is not so: we're still stuck with ARD trying to but unable to open a "Control" connection to the display system.
Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, with a similar setup under 10.9 and ARD 3.7.2?
Is there any way to clear all the settings in ARD? I can't find any .plist files with client system-by-system info in them, and I suspect they are (appropriately) encrypted because they can contain passwords, or at least store the hashed passwords in encrypted fields.
Thanks in advance for any clues for the clueless.

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

  • 2010 Mac Pro for FCP work: ATI 5770 or 5870? performance vs. fan noise

I'm planning to swap my old Mac Pro (2006 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT) for a 2010 Mac Pro model, because I need more speed for video (FCP 7, Color, Magic Bullet Looks) and photo (Lightroom 3, Photo Shop CS5) work. I'm thinking of the 6-Core (3.33 GHz) Mac Pro with 24 GB RAM and ATI Radeon 5870. I read a first review which said, that the 5870 is VERY noisy (fans), and now I'm little afraid. Is the 5870 really that loud, and will it bring clear advantages over the ATI 5770 (I dont't do 3D work yet)? I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

    Our showroom unit arrived 8/24.
Set it up and loaded it with my demo content. Motion rendering is noticeably faster.
I have yet to thrash it hard, but it's certainly no louder than its predecessor as far as I can tell.
EDIT: I see that you are in Germany. Where exactly?

I've got the 6-core w/5870 on order, so don't yet have it myself. I've been looking into this issue also, as noise is a concern.
This (http://techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/RadeonHD5870/29.html) test showed me that the card is pretty typical at idle, but fairly loud when loaded.
I don't expect I'll be loading my video card much with the work that I do right now, so wasn't as concerned. In the end, I guess I'll find out when my new machine arrives.

  • I don't have clean ideas about Mac Pro and FCP in RT

Hi, I hope you can clarify my ideas about editing in RT.
I will purchase a HDV camera and I'd like to work in RT with FCP and Mac Pro.
Many people tell me I don't need any additional card and even I don't need RAID. Can you tell me if I can work in RT with FCP, Mac Pro and 4GIGs RAM only?
    thanks

When I have to export the film from Timeline will I have to do rendering?
RT editing in FCP, for the most part simply means that there are certain things you can see happen in the timeline without rendering... a certain number of simultaneous streams or tracks, certain transitions/effects/titles etc.
How much you can do RT is determined by a number of factors... the speed/power of your computer and drives, the video format your cutting... you'll get less cutting HD than you will cutting HDV or DV25. With the type of timeline you're describing you shouldn't have any trouble seeing what you're cutting RT.
However, regardless of how much you see RT, any effects, transitions etc. have to be rendered in order to output or export. In other words, even with DV footage, unless you've got a straight cut timeline with no titles or effects, you're always looking at at least some render time to get things finished. And as David has said, HDV also requires conforming (the whole timeline, not just effects) which, depending on the length of your show can take some time.

  • I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro that needs additional RAM.

My Mid-2010 MacPro (10.8.5) is running extremely slow . . . especially when I play on-line games.  1)  Is there any easy way to determine what I might delete to free up some memory?  2) I have ordered additional memory from an outside source, but it won't be here until for several days.  The only installation instructions I could find in the support pages were for a late 2010 MacPro.  Does anyone know if the process is dfferent for a Mid-2010?  Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

  • Does anyone know if a new Mac Pro needs to come out soon?

    Hey everybody..
I'm using mac pro from 2007 and i want to replace it for a new one.
everytime i bought a mac product, 2-3 months after a newer came out (it was like that with my macbook pro, iPhone 1,3,3gs,4s, iPad2).
I guess all i want is to know if apple will ever put out a new mac pro?
    is it still apple's flagship?
I don't want to buy mac pro as it is because a lot of new technology is missing, like usb 3, thunderbolt, HDMI ect.
I thing apple didn't came out with new mac pro from 2009.
    Please Help,
    Niv

There was no new model, it was just a change in default processor from 2.8 to 3.2GHz, that was all, and it is otherwise totally the same, still runs 10.6.8 if needed too.
The need for TB is miniscule on a workstation. There are some attempts to get storage arrays but then you already can add SAS/SATA, and you can install higher end graphic video like GTX 670 if needed. More video processing than any TB - which is a nice product, just more aimed it seems toward notebook users and such.
And there are the constant where is TB threads.
Intel is even reconsidering their Xeon roadmap due to when they can have new models, DDR4 around the corner.
If there is a desire that is needed it is probably SATA 3.1 if anything.

  • Hello, I have a early 2008 Mac Pro and it won't boot even with SL DVD

My Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM) won't boot. it gets to the grey screen/ Apple logo and hangs on the logo for a few seconds then flashes either the question mark folder icon or on the circle-slash icon () for about half a second then the logo for a few seconds and repeats. It will go into Target Disk Mode (T) but not Diagnostic Mode (D)
Here's what I have done to try to fix it:
    unplugged all peripherals
tried to force DVD boot holding C (checked disc for errors on SL iMac)
removed all HDDs and rebooted holding C, plus a combination of having some in/ some out.
removed first DVD-ROM and used second drive
removed second DVD-ROM and used first drive
    held shift during startup
    held option during startup
    removed graphics card
put HDDs back in with GFX card out, plus combinations
put only the boot drive HDD in (not time machine or 3rd HDD)
put blank HDD in and booted DVD
put mac formatted (used iMac to format) HDD in and booted with DVD
used an G4 USB keyboard again for all of the above
All of this has not worked so I am stuck with what to do. It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area, but I made sure it was using the 3rd HDD I had put in the machine a couple of days before so it shouldn't be interfering with normal operations. I had also formatted it to NTFS earlier but reformatted it on the Mac Pro to Mac OS Extended - I don't know if this is even relevant.
Any suggestions (except taking it to a Apple repair centre as I can usually fix anything myself!)
    Thanks.

Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
    That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
    Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
    So just to be clear.
    ===========
It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.
