Does anyone have spotlight search crash?

On both my iphone and ipad air, spotlight crashes often.  When I pull it down from the middle of the home screen it apears for about two seconds and then automatically goes back to the home screen again without touching the screen.  It is hit or miss, but seems to happen everytime if I haven't used spotlight search for a few hours.  Is anyone else noticing this?

this?
Yep. The people who own Google and make their living
providing such
servcices.
Or the bods who wrote Lucene or Verity have a clue or two,
too.
You're basically asking us if we know how to write a search
engine. My
suggestion would be to not try to reinvent the wheel, but use
one of the
systems already out there.
Google appliances costs a fair bit, but Lucene is free, and
CF bundles
Verity with it. I recommend you use one of those two.

Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very slow.  I've run repair permissions without positive result.  Does anyone have any ideas?

My MacBook Pro (2010) is runnign very slow.  This came on all of a sudden.  It opens, closes, reboots, etc., all much slower than ever before.  I have used the repair disk permissions without any positive result.  Does anyone have any ideas?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Take these steps when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

I am trying to connect my Macbook pro 2010 to my Samsung HDTV using a mini display port to hdtv cable. Trying to play a slide show in IPhoto but I only get sound with no picture. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

I can't swear to it but I don't recall this being a problem pre-Yosemite. I could be wrong. I haven't been real active on Facebook until recently. I see some third party apps out there but am alway wary of non approved software.

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • SCOM 2012 SNMP Trap - Does anyone have it working?

I am wondering if anyone out there has had any luck with getting SNMP Traps to be captured by SCOM 2012?  Probes work fine.
We have been unable to get SCOM 2012 to receive a SNMP Trap from network devices.  We currently have a case open with Microsoft, but they dont have any answers as of yet.
Here are the cliff notes version of what we have done so far.
    Discovery - OK
The nodes discover without issue.  I made sure they were set to SNMP only.  I did this to verify we were talking SNMP and not just ICMP.
    Open Ports/Firewall Issues
No firewalls are in place on the SCOM server and none exist between devices we are trying to get traps from.  Using a port tool, I can see that UDP 162 is listening as expected and its the System Center Management Host Process that is running the
process.  We have tried having SNMP installed, but disabled, installed and running, and uninstalled.  Currently we have the SNMP service installed and running.  The SNMP Trap Service is NOT installed.
    Data Validation
Using Wireshark running on the SCOM box I have been able to validate the OIDs we are searching for are hitting the SCOM server.  I installed an SNMP Trap generator and Receiver on my local machine as well as Jalasoft SNMP Simulator.  I was able
to discover my local machine as a network device and if I send a TRAP from the TRAP generator on my local machine to the receiver on my local machine I can validate the data is coming through ok.
What has been done on SCOM side
The simplest place to look for data is with an Event Collection Rule and then an Event View Monitor.  We have set up an Event Based Monitor to search for an OID that I know to be accurate and then I set up an Event monitor to look for
anything hitting that Collection Rule.  The Event monitor showed nothing so we changed the EVent Monitor to look for anything that hit Node which should show any SNMP traps that have hit from network devices.  No results.
We tried to run WFAnalyzer from the 2007R2 Authoring Console, but it wont run against 2012 and from what I have found the 2012 edition doesnt exist anywhere yet.
So has anyone succesfully received a SNMP TRAP into SCOM 2012?

    Hi,
As this thread has been quiet for a while, we assume that the issue has been resolved. At this time, we will mark it as "Answered" as the previous steps should be helpful for many similar scenarios.
In addition, we’d love to hear your feedback about the solution. By sharing your experience you can help other community members facing similar problems.

How could you possibly mark this as answered? No answer was given, it was quiet for a couple of days including one of which was a holiday in the US. The previous steps are NOT helpful.  The question remains, Does anyone have it working?
People have given troubleshooting advice, but nobody has actually answered the simple question.  Do they have it actually WORKING?

Does anyone have experience with unzipping a password-encrypted ZipFile??
My Zip Class works fine with every unencrypted file, but when I try to open an encrypted one, i get an error Message ("Encrypted ZIP entry not supported")
Is ist impossible to unzip encrypted ZIPs???

I've searched around a little bit and THIS IS THE SOLUTION!
There is a (beta)version of winzip8 that uses a cli (command line interface)
So, all you have to do is to implement a Runtime.getRuntime().exec(...) in your java program to call winzip8 and pass the zipfile path and the password.

I agree with Grant. But to answer your question, that would be Word 2008. A quick search turns it up on sale at Amazon. You'll need to find it somewhere other than Microsoft itself, since MS stopped selling it when they released Word 2011.

  • Does anyone have opinions about at

Does anyone have experience with or opinions about the free McAfee security suite offerd by At&t U-Verse? I would also ask the same about OpenDNS, which seemed to work fine on my old Mac. Thanks

The McAfee product is much worse than useless.
This is a comment on OpenDNS and other public domain-name system (DNS) services, such as Google DNS. You should use such a service if it solves a problem for you, and not if it creates problems you don't already have. To summarize:
    1. Using public DNS will probably not make your network faster, and may make it slower.
    2. It will probably not stop your browser from being redirected when you try to connect to a valid web address.
    3. It will not make you safer from malware attacks.
    4. It could cause confidential information to be compromised.
    5. It has other privacy implications that you should be aware of.
A DNS server resolves the human-readable "domain name" of an Internet host, such as www.apple.com, to the numerical address by which that host can be reached. The process is analogous to looking up a phone number by name. There is no chance that changing the DNS server you use will have any effect on a network problem not related to name resolution.
There are two valid reasons why you might want to use a public DNS service:
The DNS servers provided by your ISP are misconfigured (perhaps deliberately) or don't perform well.
You have a use for the filtering controls provided by OpenDNS and others.
Although some DNS services are touted as responding faster than others, there will be no noticeable difference if your ISP is delivering what you pay for. Most likely, the difference in response time among the DNS servers available to you is on the order of a hundredth of a second or less. But under some conditions, public DNS will significantly slow down network performance. Here is a case in point.
A content-distribution network (CDN), such as the one used by Apple to deliver software updates and iTunes content, relies on the location of the DNS server to optimize performance. If your query goes to a distant server, you may get slow downloads of Apple content, among other things. From the report of a test carried out by a networking consultant:
We listed 9 CDNs that would benefit from supporting/using edns-client-subnet, and only two actually support edns-client-subnet: CDN77 and ChinaCache. Others, including Akamai, Internap and CDNetworks, do not currently. This really is too bad, because from the performance data we collected, it is clear these CDNs deliver (much) worse performance currently in many countries to Google DNS and OpenDNS users.
Another reason often given for using public DNS is to avoid "redirection," that is, false results from a query for a valid domain name. Ethical ISP's do not intentionally redirect valid DNS queries, though it might happen unintentionally because of a misconfiguration; for example, because the address of a network host has recently changed, or because of a "poisoning" attack on the DNS server. Note that many ISP's may, and OpenDNS certainly will, redirect invalid queries to ad sites, in violation of published standards for DNS.
Recently, a few low-quality commercial ISP's such as "CenturyLink" have taken to deliberately redirecting DNS queries for some domains, such as search engines. Do not tolerate this practice. If your ISP is doing it, then you should demand that the redirection be stopped, or else switch to another ISP.
Some ISP's have been said to route all DNS queries to their own name servers, regardless of where the queries were directed—another intolerable practice. I haven't heard that any commercial ISP is now doing this, but if yours is, you won't be able to use a public DNS service, even if you change the network settings on your computer or router.
Of course, if your Internet access is provided by an employer or institution, rather than by a commercial ISP, then you have to take whatever you get.
The claims on the OpenDNS website that it blocks malware attacks such as "Flashback" are false advertising. A DNS service does not and cannot block anything. All it can do is to selectively refuse to answer queries. It's trivial for a malware attacker to evade such controls. It's just as easy to evade the parental controls offered by OpenDNS. Nevertheless, you may find those control features useful, despite their limitations. Here is an example of an ASC user who had undesirable results from OpenDNS content filtering.
There is one limited exception to the rule that OpenDNS and Google DNS don't improve performance. The "prefetching" performed by modern web browsers, including Safari, may confuse some DNS servers, with the effects described in this Apple Support article. The article suggests testing OpenDNS, Google DNS, or another third-party DNS service as a possible way to overcome the problem.
If you need to switch DNS providers because of a misconfiguration of your ISP's servers, the change will most likely only need to be temporary. The problem may be resolved automatically within a matter of hours.
If you're considering whether to use public DNS, such as OpenDNS, on a long-term basis, you should take into account the privacy implications. As a user of the free service, you are not an OpenDNS customer, and the service provider—a for-profit corporation—doesn't have a contract with you. The marketers to whom OpenDNS sells access and information are its customers.
OpenDNS will know, and store, the address of every Internet server you use from now on. This is from its privacy policy:
When you use our Services, OpenDNS stores certain DNS, IP address and related information about you to improve the quality of our Service, to provide you with Services and for internal business and analysis purposes.
Concerning personal information, the policy states:
...[I]t is disclosed to entities that perform marketing services on our behalf or to other entities with whom we have joint marketing agreements...
You can't opt out of those disclosures. Read the privacy policy carefully and draw your own conclusions. The privacy policy of Google DNS seems to be somewhat more benign, but again, you should judge for yourself.
That's not the worst of it, though. The practice of hijacking nonexistent domains followed by most public DNS services could result in leaking confidential information to a hacker:
For example, consider the "same origin trust model" used for Web cookies. If you're holding a cookie for GOOGLE.COM and you can be fooled into following a link to KJHSDFKJHSKJHMJHER.GOOGLE.COM, and the resulting NXDOMAIN response is remapped into a positive answer to some advertising server, then you're going to send your cookie to that advertising server when you send your HTTP GET request there. Not such a bad thing for a GOOGLE.COM cookie, but a real problem for a BANKOFAMERICA.COM cookie.
NXDOMAIN remapping is not something that only happens when you randomly mistype a domain name.  It can be exploited deliberately by malicious links placed on any web page. In the case of OpenDNS, the result would be that a cookie intended for another server would be sent to the OpenDNS web server instead. A rogue OpenDNS employee, or anyone who managed to break into the web server, might then be able to impersonate you on another website. If this scenario seems far-fetched, it's the stuff that network exploits are made of.
See also a brief, and somewhat outdated, critique of OpenDNS on a Harvard Law School blog, with a response from the company's founder.

  • HT201454 I systemically tried every suggestion on Apple's "If you don't see your family's shared content" help page. None worked. Does anyone have a solution?

My wife and I are set up for family sharing, but neither OS X nor iOS app store purchases appear to be sharing (i.e. the App doesn't just say "Get" for the other person after it is bought by the partner). Apple's suggestions did not work. Does anyone have a solution to this?

I solved my own problem but I don't think this is how Family Sharing is meant to work. On my Mac, I purchased an app. On my wife's mac, when I search for that app in the store, it has a button with a price on it (not a cloud symbol or anything that would indicate it had already been purchased by someone in Family Sharing). HOWEVER, when I click on the "Purchases" button at the top of the app store, use the pull down menu to change to the other member of the family, then all the apps can be installed.
I thought sharing would mean that the apps would be free from their normal site in the app store. If you have to go to purchases to see apps purchased by the family, then you might miss that fact and double pay. Perhaps Apple did this on purpose to help its app developers make more money despite Family Sharing.

Help. Photoshop CC14 on Mac 5k (2014) running Yosemite 10.10.1. Photoshop stops responding when I'm opening files, saving files or creating new ones. Is anyone suffering the same problem? Does anyone have an answer?

First, go install the MacOS 10.10 updates - you should be on 10.10.2.
I haven't heard of Photoshop not responding during opens and saves.  Does it stop responding while the open/save dialogs are visible, or while Photoshop is actually reading or writing files?
10.10.1 did fix a crash in the open/save dialogs, but 10.10.2 still has some odd issues (mostly program errors coming from the OS code) in the open/save dialogs.

    Jon....
Don't confuse the threads here with 'typical' experience.  Most of the stuff here is from brand new users, and those that have problems, and considering the 30 million pads in use, represent a very small sliver.
If you are having repeated crashes it is really pretty basic.  You either have a physical problem with your pad, or you are using too much memory.
The iOS system is supposed to monitor memory, and shut down previously used apps automatically to free up memory for what you are doing now.  That part of ios is not perfect, and if an app introduces an unexpected memory load, sometimes it gets over whelmed.
This happens, more often than not, when using safari with multiple windows open on graphic intense sites.  It can also happen with a memory intensive game, and residual apps in the background.
Double  tap the home key and take a peek at the recently used list, and shut them down completely, and often the problem goes away.
If the problem persists, you may have a software issue, and a trip to the genius bar may be in order.
