  • How do I tell if my MacBook Pro supports 802.11n 5GHz?

As I wait for my Apple Extreme Base Station, I was wondering if it would make sense to create two different SSID networks. One Mixed b/g for 2.4GHz devices and another one solely for 5GHz. I know my ATV2 supports 802.11n in 5GHz. As I go down my list of devices in my house, I can't tell if my MacBook Pros support the 5GHz. Both MacBook Pros are Mid 2010 models.
The reason for creating two different networks is that the AEBS downgrades your network based on the lowest device (i.e. b/g would be forced on a n device if such device connects to your network).

Of course, you are aware that n operates in both 2.4 and 5GHz.
Check AirPort in System Profiler. It should list supported modes and supported channels. Then compare supported channels to the list of WLAN channels in the 5GHz band.

  • Does anyone know if a macbook air from Australia will work in the UK?

I need to know what problems I would have if I bought a Macbook air in Australia and brought it to the UK, would it still be able to connect to BT wireless? and what would i need to change power wise is it just the cable or is the voltage different? Also would programs still be compatable such as windows office?

Yes, it should work everywhere in the world. You do not require any power adapter change but you may require a wall socket plug adapter. You can buy them at some computer stores as well as major travel stores. Apple also sells their own World Travel Kit.
It is possible that your computer's Australian accent will change to a British accent if you stay in the UK too long.

  • Does anyone know why my MacBook Air doesn't automatically pick up WiFi from my Time Machine? I have to choose my network everytime I open the laptop

I have attempted several different choices within preferences and yet, it still won't work.  The confusing part, is that when I'm at a different location, and have chosen a WIFI network there, each time I open the laptap, it automatically connects to that network. Not so at home.  Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Open Finder, press Option key, select Go > Library, open Preferences and delete com.apple.network.prefPaneSimulate.plist. If it doesn't work, open > http://rys.sommefeldt.com/2011/09/04/osx-lion-wifi.html http://www.reedcorner.net/understanding-upgrade-nightmares/

  • Does anyone know if the macbook will be in stores today?

I was going to order one, but if they are in stores I will just go pick one up. It will mean having to get a stock configuration and modifying it, but to have it right now would be fun.

It seems that only the "Apple Stores" have them in stock. I've called a few places here (Canada) that are "Apple Authorized Resellers" that do not have them in stock and expect to in the next week or 2.

System Preferences/Accounts is where usernames and login behaviour are defined ...
But before you rush to change anything there be advised that it's better if you create a new username and transfer your users folder data files across rather than trying to edit the long and short usernames you set up initially.

Before you attempt any of this make a full backup !

  • I have a 13" macbook from 2009 and for some reason can no longer change my desktop image by just clicking on an image in system prererences I-Photo. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I have a 13" macbook from 2009 and for some reason can no longer change my desktop image by just clicking on an image in system prererences>I-Photo. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Your Desktop Picture settings and Dock items are stored in the files
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and
    /Users/your short user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
in the "Preferences" folder in your user library. This looks like the system has trouble to write to these files. Check the permissions on your user library and remove the above files from your user library, then log off and on again.
Your user library is hidden in Lion and Mt. Lion. To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Select "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar and hold down the alt/option key, until you see the "Library"  in the drop-down menu. Double click it to open a Finder window, so you can browse the files inside.

  • Does anyone know if the new ipad air has a usb port. This is the only downside to the ipad to me? My samsung galaxy tab has 2. 1 being a micro usb. Great for connecting to the tv.     Thanks, greenlady5.

Does anyone know if the new ipad sir, not yet available will have a usb port? This is the only thing that is prevented me from purchasing so far. Doesn't make sense when you can connect to tv.

The standard external connection and charge port on all recently-announced (October 2014) models in the US is the Lightning connector, introduced with the iPad 4 in Sept 2012. http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/12/apples-new-lightning-connector-what-it-does-and -doesnt-change/
This includes iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini 2 with Retina display and iPad mini 3.

NOTE: The original iPad (2010), iPad 2 (2011), iPad 3 (early 2012) came with a 30-pin connector, also common to original iPhones and iPods.
Additional adapters are available to connect TV's, cameras, SD memory cards, and similar devices, from many sources, including the Apple Store online. (Adapters are still available for the older iDevices using the 30-pin connector as well)

I believe it's the same as most GPS devices. It's accurate within 50 feet.
