Does anyone know what actually breaks when a hard drive fails?

My macbook's hard drive has just died. It seems this is an all too common problem with macbooks and as everyone seems to go through the same sequence of events when the failure happens I just wondered what it is that actually goes wrong, and why. What is the ticking sound that I can now hear that wasn't there before? My Macbook sits on a cooling stand on my desk and hasn't been moved for weeks so why should it work one minute and die the next for no apparent reason? Could the heat that the current Apple Macbooks and MBP's generate be contributing to these failing hard drives? I have always felt that the high temperatures that the Macbooks work at can't be good for the internal parts, you would think that something would eventually fry or melt. If it is the heat that causes these failure then this is a serious issue as all the current Macbook line run very hot.

Apple uses the same drives as every other computer manufacturer. You mentioned that you upgraded to more RAM. That is one way to reduce the wear and tear on a hard drive. Unfortunately, as was mentioned, hard drives are remarkably complex devices. You have a platter spinning at 5400 or 7200 RPMs (that's 90 or 120 times a second ! ). You have a read head that is floating just a few air molecules above that super fast disk. Every year, hard drive manufacturers cram more and more data storage capability into less and less space. All things considered... hard drives are remarkably reliable. Unfortunately, as with all electronic devices (mechanical or solid state)... some are going to fail. There is simply no way around that with today's production technologies. The most important thing you can do is always keep a back up of your data on some form of external media.... be it a flash drive, CD/DVD, or an external hard drive. Hard drives are fairly inexpensive... and they are easy to replace in a MacBook. What is not so easy to replace (and in the case of business use... not so inexpensive) is your data. So long as you have your data backed up, a dead hard drive becomes nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

Does anyone know what to do when there is a white flashing light on the Apple TV

It means the update failed and your AppleTV can't start.
You need to restore by connecting to a computer running current iTunes via a USB to micro USB cable.
    See:

Pay attention to differences in power connection depending on whether or not you have AppleTV2 or AppleTV 3.

  • TS2932 Does anyone know what to do when after importing photo's it says "Can't Find Original Photo"

Hey so I imported my photo's and such from my GoPro, but when I go to look at the photo's it says, original photo not found... Does anyone know how to fix or [find] this?

How did you import? Check the settings for "Store files" in the "Import Settings" window.
Have you set this to "Store files in the Aperture Library" or is it set to a different location? If you selected "In there original location", then Aperture is referencing the files on the external device you imported from and you need to connect it again to be able to access the image files. Always import managed with "Store files in the Aperture Library", if you want your image files safely stored inside the Aperure library.

  • Does anyone know what to do when one is forced to reboot during a burn?

I was burning a multi-disc audiobook, and on disc 5 of about 7 the computer froze completely. My only recourse was to reboot, and I am trying to figure out a way to finish the burn without reburning the first 4 discs. Does anyone have any ideas?

I didn't resolve this issue, but it seems unresolvable, so I am closing it out.

  • Does anyone know what to???

does anyone know what to do when the droid charge starts telling you the the apps that you had are no longer installed on the phone and it wont allow you to  access whats needed to redownload the apps or access the internet. I mean the camera has even stoped working. this is rediculous

    Hello weese,
The Droid Charge is a revolutionary device and it raised the bar on 4G LTE devices! With its super AMOLED screen and 1GHz processor, the Charge offers a robust set of wireless entertainment features. May I ask what app(s) are you referring to that aren’t working? Can I assume that you are able to make and receive calls? If you are unable to uninstall the app then the next step would be a hard reset. Below is a link to how to complete a hard reset on the Droid Charge.
    http://support.verizonwireless.com/clc/devices/knowledge_base.html?id=42407
Keep in mind that it’s recommended that you back up all of your information prior to the reset. Backup Assistant Plus can be used to archive your contacts. Also, another option is to sync your contact and calendar entries to the Gmail account on the device. Once you have completed a hard reset then the device will need to be re-setup. There is a tutorial that walks through this process. After the device is setup, I encourage that you test all voice and data services. Once you try to re-download the app(s), please post your findings as I am eager to know the results.
    Thank you…

Buy a new drive and replace the old one. While the old one is still working (if it is) I would quickly make a bootable backup to an external drive if you have one, assuming you have no extant backup.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You will find suitable replacement drives at OWC.
They may also have a video tutorial. Or you may find a written tutorial at ifixit.com. Also may find one by Googling for it.

If your erasing packages or programs, they appear like a file, but are actually folders with more files and folders inside.
For instance right click on your Pictures/iPhoto Library and "show package contents" inside is more files and folders of files.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.
