Does anyone recommend a good graphic utility to prepare files for the web?

GraphicConverter as noted by Don, or Photoshop Elements are the favourites. Both will allow comprehensive editing, and save for web facilities including reducing the .jpg quality to shrink file size without making the picture smaller.
There is a free application calld Gimp (open source) but I don't know how good it is or whether it's updated for Lion.

    Hello JimmyStone
Photo Booth "effects" are commands that are built into OS X core functions, so all the effects available for Photo Booth are already in the app.

  • Can anyone recommend a good graphics card?

So I am in the process of building a performance driven computer so i have a good machine for video editing, audio editing, and photoshop.

While I do not mind paying for a good gpu, I do have a budget to but the gpus that are thousands of dollars.

  • Can anyone recommend a good 802.11n card/usb adaptor for a Windows PC?

I'm about to buy a new iMac and an Airport Extreme Base Station, and I would like my wife's Windows XP PC to be able to take advantage of 802.11n, as the base station will be in the living room and our office room (where the new iMac and the PC live) gets a terrible reception with 802.11g (thick interior walls being the main problem).
I've had a look online at various USB/PCI products, but can any of you recommend one that works particularly well with the Airport Extreme?
Perhaps the Airport Express would be the best solution, as my wife's PC has an ethernet card, plus we also have a USB printer in the office that we'd like to share over the whole house?

I would agree with that, go SATA if you're an island. That's what the majority of my system is set up with.
However, I also have a DSR-11 connected via firewire, and I get firewire drives shipped to me by clients, so I need an additional firewire bus. I bought the cheapest fw400 card I could find, and haven't had any issues yet. I think I spent $35 at CompUSA.
Are there issues that would make me want to buy a better card?

  • Does anyone know where you can get a rubber pad for the bottom of the Macbook Pro 13"?

My Macbook Pro 13" tends to get a bit warm while sitting on my lap at times. I really don't want to put a case on it, but I wondered if anyone sells a rubber pad that might cover the bottom of the laptop? I would think this would help with the heat and also provide better gripping when you set it down on a surface. Nothing fancy, just a rubber pad that would stick on.
    Never hurts to ask
    Thanks
    --Aric

The metal body is a key part of the heat dissipation.
And the MBP is a "notebook", not a "laptop".  Air flows around the body to get rid of heat.
I have used my MBP on my lap, but always balanced on both legs and left as much metal as possible exposed.  Now I understand even that was risky.
If you want to use a hard-surface that the MBP sits on and the surface sits on your leg, then OK.  But the heat you feel is the MBP clearing itself.

  • Does anyone know of a work around or a fix for the "Mail.app of death"?

Google it if you haven't heard about it before.
I've tried the proof-of-concept code that's circulating the web and it works as announced in a very disturbing way. (Mail.app crashes, over and over again.)
    //Niklas

I noticed a typo in my question, it should be "Mail.app mail of death".
Since no one seem to be interested in this very serious vulnerability, here's a link to the proof-of-concept located at SecurityFocus.

  • Anyone recommend a good router

    Hi,
I have an iBook G4 14". I have been using 2 Airport Express units. One as the main one and the other as a repeater or whatever that would be called to extend the signal throughout the house.
They worked great. But my ISP changed hands and at the exact same time.....the routers stopped working. Neither one. I have swapped them out in case one had failed. Still....they don't work. The ISP is useless for advice on routers.
I have tried all the usual stuff such as restarting the modem etc.... Still no joy! The "airport strength icon" in the menu bar shows good.
I am very non-techy. I would never be able to swap a card in my iBook. At least I don't think I would
    Two questions:
    1. What is a good "non-Apple" router that would work w/ my iBook?
    2. Does anyone here know if that router would also work for the new iMacs (wanna get one soon). I can head to that forum if no one knows.
    Thanks,
    jabberwock

    Hi jabberwock!
If your 2 AirPort Express units still show power, it's unlikely that they went bad.
More than likely your ISP changed servers and you just need to reset them to factory default, and then reconfigure for your ISP.
Unplug the AirPort Express. Use the end of a straightened paper clip to hold the reset button while you plug in the AirPort Express. Do that at an electrical receptacle that is convenient to reach.
Open the utility "AirPort Setup Assistant" and choose to "Setup a new "AirPort Base Station." If you have both Express units plugged in nearby while performing this setup, that would be best, so that you can see their lights and configure one as the base and the other as the remote. After setup is completed, relocate the units to their former electrical receptacles under the desk, behind the cabinet, or where ever:)

  • Can anyone recommend a good processor

I'm trying to decide between the:
    Newer Technology MAXPower G4/7447A Dual 1.6GHz Processor Upgrade or;
    Newer Technology MAXPower G4/7448 2.0GHz Processor Upgrade or;
Encore ST G4 Dual 1.8GHz, for Power Mac G4
The price of the first two are the same and the third is about $100 more.
Does anyone know anything good or bad about any of them so I can make a better decision?
What applications need a dual processor anyway? I've only seen a couple, iMovie, but it also recommends a G5. If anyone knows of others that would be useful to know also.
If anyone knows of any others as well, I would appreciate a recommendation also.

    Hi-
Newertech makes a good processor upgrade, as does Powerlogix, Fastmac, and GigaDesigns.
The 7447 based processors are good, efficient processors, but only have a 512mb L2 cache. The 7448 are a bit more power efficient than the 7447's, and feature a 1mb L2 cache, which will provide performance increases over the equivalent 7447.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=149&type=Processor&TI=0727&sh oupgrds=Show+Upgrades
The above (your post) mentioned DP upgrades are both 7447 based. A 7455 based 2x1.4ghz processor upgrade would actually be equivalent in most all tasks, but much faster in graphics intensive tasks because of the presence of the L3 cache. Though slower than the L2 cache, the L3 cache helps handle high instruction traffic for the processors easy access, allowing faster, more efficient processing. Games, video processing, FC, etc., will benefit from the L3 cache in the G4's.

Applications that benefit from Dual processor include Photoshop, Final Cut, Logic, Quicktime, or most any video/audio editing/compiling and graphics rendering software.
IMHO, the Sonnet would be the least desireable, though many users like them. For the price difference, the dual 1.6 7447 isn't far behind in performance, thus a better buy, and the Newertech dual 1.7ghz 7448 would be better than the Sonnet, for about the same money (slightly less, even).
FYI, my single 2.0ghz Powerlogix has never missed a lick, and has made this old Sawtooth capable of satisfying my computing needs well enough to have kept me from early G5's, which I considered in 2004.
Whether or not you need a dual or not, will be determined by the software that you use. Considering that many models are dual processors, and have been for years, the number of applications that can benefit from DP's are many, and are sure to increase in number.
