Does anyone repair Airport Extremes? Save the landfills!

The ethernet WAN port of my Airport Extreme 802.11n stopped working, and the unit is out of warranty and not covered by AppleCare. I really don't want to just toss it to the landfill, but Apple only offers a refurb-replacement option ($130, with 90 day warranty, so $50 more and I can get a new one with one year, or somewhat less through a company discount).
Anyone know of a place that works on these?

Since I have to use WEP (not really secure) on my network in order to allow some older devices to connect, I have also enabled MAC Address Access Control (also not secure) to at least be able to prove that any unauthorized access is not accidental.
The predecessor to Airport Utility allowed me to save the MAC address list to a file also, but that seems to be a missing feature now. I rummaged in the saved .baseconfig file and saw no hint that the access control list is in there. There isn't even a binary element that's big enough to be hiding it.
Do I have to copy down the MAC ACL manually? And re-enter it manually to restore it?

  • Why does my new Airport Extreme accept the old password for a guest user?

I have a new N/AC Airport Extreme Time Capsule that a friend can access only by using the password for an older "G" Airport base station from a previous visit. She can't get onto my current network using the correct/current passwrod. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks!

Ideally, yes. The closer each device is to the router the stronger the signal will be. Obviously, this is not usually possible. The free air range of an AEBS is a radius of about 150 feet. That should be adequate for a 1400 SF house.
If you find you are not able to get a strong enough signal at the farthest point from the router then consider adding an Airport Express near the middle of the house to extend the signal.

The first important thing to consider here is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme, so that may likely have something to do with your difficulties.
If you want to continue to try this, the drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and you almost always have to use a powered USB hub with a drive at the port of the Extreme...even if the hard drive has its own power supply....because the port on the Extreme is under powered.
Most users who try this unsupported method have corruption difficulties sooner or later, but we do hear from some users who seem to be able to make it work.
The bottom line is that there is no support from Apple on this if you have difficulties, so you may want to consider a secondary backup plan for your important data.

  • HT1998 My iPAD can use the internet through my airport extreme, but the airport utility does not see it so I can't create a guest password.  What am I doing wrong?

My iPAD can use the internet through my Airport Extreme, but the Airport Utility does not see the device so I can't set a guest password.

If your Mac is using the Lion operating system with recent updates, it will be necessary to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Select the AirPort Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Click the Wireless Network Options button
Remove the check mark next to Create a closed network
Click Done, then click Update to save the new settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart

Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device.

  • Does adding a second airport extreme slow the wifi speeds?

I get 17mbps from my airport base station hardwired to uverse router. On the new 5th gen extreme.used to extend network, speeds are 7mbps at best. is a second device incapable of the same bandwidth as the originating extreme?even when well within range?

My only issue is, i've not got the AE's on "bridge Mode"
That's quite an issue, since you only want to have one router handling DHCP and NAT on the network. You have two routers both trying to provide the same services if the AirPort Extreme is distributing IP addresses. Conflicts are inevitable. The AirPort Extreme needs to be in Bridge Mode.
I can't seem to put the AE back into the connection sharing option that says "distrubute a range of ip address"
This setting would be used only if your ISP has assigned multiple IP addresses to you....and the AirPort Extreme is the "main" router on the network.
"Share a public IP address" would be the setting to use.....if the Uverse router will tolerate another router on the network. Sometimes you can find a workaround, but then you have to put up with Double NAT errors and other unpredictable things on the network.
I used to be able to operate without bridge mode off the uverse router/modem but can't anymore.
Probably due to updates on both the Uverse and AirPort routers to prevent users from trying to run two routers on the same network.
Uverse routher which is impossible to figure out to reserve ip's etc for externetal devices.
Is this a Motorola router, or 2-Wire?  Either should have online support for this type of basic router service.

  • Connecting AirPort Extreme to the Inet

    Hey there,
So my problem is that I don't know how to connect the Airport Extreme to the Internet. Sure I do know that I have to plug in the cable from the modem. But what then? I tried to go into the PPPoE option on the airport extreme. But there it says I have to type in the Username and Password. But where do I get those?
My former router is made by t-online and it asked for the connection Number, the t-online number and a password. All of those are series of numbers. T-online sent me those when they installed the internet in my house. When I am putting the password in it always adds two ** to my pw so it becomes 8 digits long.
Does anyone has an idea how to fix the problem?
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)

iMeal, Welcome to the discussion area!
Does your ISP require PPPoE? If not, then disable and disregard the PPPoE settings.
You will need to contact your ISP and determine how to configure a router to connect. Then you will have the proper settings to connect.
As an alternative, you could connect the Ethernet output of your "t-online" router and connect it to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Then configure the AEBS so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED.

If restoring using your backup didn't work, you'll have to save as much of your data as you can (import your photos to your computer, sync your contacts and other data with iCloud, email things like Notes and Voice Memos to yourself, sync with iTunes to transfer all your purchases, etc.) and then restore it as new without using your backup.

I recently changed my apple ID but my previous apple ID is associated with my icloud account. I'm setting up my new iphone 6 and cannot complete the set up until I can sync my icloud account. Does anyone know how to change the icloud id?

    Do the following:
Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iPhone and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out and choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your phone).

  • How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?

How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?
I have an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme and I can access it just fine through Finder.  I would like to be able to keyboard navigate to it in an efficient manner.  I tried to use the "Go to the folder" feature but was unable to.
I had tried dragging the drive to the Network folder but the shortcut it created does not lead to the drive's contents...it seems to lead right back to the parent directory:
I hope I explained the question well.  Thank you for all of your help and time in tending to my inquiry.

Cant you set up "back to my mac" then go to finder preferences and put a check mark under everything under the shared location. Also set up back to my mac on your airport extreme.

  • What's the range of airport extreme can the signal reach my basement my house is about 2500 sq ft

Whats the range on the airport extreme is the signal strong enough to reach the basement of a 2500 sq ft home.  Thx

The maximum free-space range is 150 feet; slightly more in the 5 GHz band. However, walls, floors, other electronic devices, microwave ovens, etc. will attenuate the signal reducing the range for actual use.
I live in a 2300 SF townhome and wireless works fine from an AEBS on the second floor. I use an Airport Express on the first floor in Extend mode that is configured for my Slingplayer. Apple TV2 does not seem to have any problems. It's also on the bottom floor.
This is a six year old home so the walls are not made of plaster. Plaster on metal lath can prevent AEBS signals from being detected outside of the room where it's located.
