Does Apache in 10.6 support Web directory protection using .htpasswd?
I am trying to protect a directory on my mac os 10.6 Web Sharing server using .htpasswd to no avail. I am creating an .htaccess and an .htpasswd file in the directory with what I think are proper configurations. Has anyone done this successfully? Am I missing something? Does the default setup in Snow Leopard allow for this? Is there a better way? Are these too many questions in a row?
It was my understanding that one creates the .htpasswd file inside the directory that one is protecting, no?
You can do that, but it's hardly recommended. Ideally the password file should be completely outside of the web directory since that makes it harder for someone to get access to it. If it's anywhere in the web directory tree then there's a chance that a remote user could get access to it (via some as-yet-unknown web server compromise) and there go all your passwords.
.htaccess has to be in the directory it relates to, but .htpasswd can (and should) be elsewhere.
and then created an .htaccess file alongside it with the entry shown in my original post.
Sure, but that .htaccess file includes the path to the .htpasswd file to use for authentication.
Just edit that line to the full path to your .htpasswd file.
I'm not sure but I don't even see sever logs where I expected at:
/private/var/log/httpd/access_log
Under Apache 2 the logs are in /var/log/apache2/
Also it appears that there are two apache2 folders:
/etc/apache2/
/private/etc/apache2/
It doesn't matter. /etc is really a symlink to /private/etc. It's there mostly for compatiblity with unix apps that expect /etc.

Completely Lost:no supporting web browser to use...
I have been without internet on my own mac for quite some time. I've been using my fiance's PC (God help me). It's been over a year since I've used the internet on my mac. I have a g3 imac with OS 9.1. I found out yesterday after having internet installed that internet explorer no longer supports upgrades. Also, my yahoo email can't be accessed because I have to upgrade to a new web browser. I tried firefox, no luck, safari isn't offered for my OS and msn is all wierd looking and then not to mention other websites that I'm used to visiting are messed up. Things are out of place and links to click on are missing...text over other text.
I've been trying all day to figure something out and I am frustrated to the point of insanity.
I've googled and searched and downloaded (with no luck). I can't even upgrade from 9.1 to 9.2.1 either. I called CompUSA where I bought my computer and they said I'll "be getting a call back and if I don't, call back and ask for Dean." I even tried the 1800 number and waited for 20 minutes before giving up.
I want to know what web browser I can use AND a link to download it. Is 9.1 so out of date that I'll be forced to upgrade???
Thankyou much in advance!
iMac Mac OS 9.1.xI have just accessed my Yahoo email with my Lombard (G3, 333 MHZ) on OS9.2 using both Netscape 7.01 and Mozilla 1.3 (wamcom). Even viewed the little bee buzzing over flowers gif my sister included. I have no reason to think they won't work with 9.1 as well. I've never been a fan of Internet Exploder anyway.
The only thing I can't get to with Netscape is my netscape.net email! That's because it was engulfed, amoeba-like, by AIM mail and offers "improvements" I had no use for. Now I have to use the iMac G5 and Firefox. Otherwise I still use Netscape, even on the G5. Things work fine. Occasionally eBay will show a "reminder" to upgrade the browser so I can use all the features, but I just dismiss it. I don't know what features I am missing, but I'm pretty sure I don't really need them.
So try Netscape. -
Does PI 7.0 SP14 support WS-RM?
Hi,
Does PI 7.0 SP14 support Web Services - Reliable Messaging? I know that WS-RM were down ported to NW 7.0 SP13(14). However, I've found some controversial information to what degree. Is it the full support like in PI 7.1?
Thank you,
BorisPI 7.0 does not support WS-RM, but an application system based on 7.0 SP14 (like ECC) can exchange WS-RM messages with a PI 7.1 system.
Hope that helps,

Does HP Pavilion p7-1154 support AMD Dual Graphics?
I have a Pavilion p7-1154 - Serial no.{Removed for privacy} - The motherboard is an AAHD3-HB (stock MB) made by Pegatron. I have upgraded the stock RAM from 6 GB of 1333 to 16 GB of Corsair Vengence 1600 and upgraded the processor from an AMD A6 3600 to an AMD A8 3850, all according to the upgrade guide for this machine from HP. I've also upgraded the PSU from the stock 300w to a Corsair 500w 80Plus Bronze certified PSU.
Now that's what I'done so far - what I want to know is does the MB (AAHD3-HB) support AMD Dual Graphics, using the suggested graphics cards, I would like to use a Radeon 6670 GPU.

This question was solved.
View Solution.Mike, after consulting with other members, I believe that dual graphis is not available since it is not noted in the specs.
However, here is a Youtube video about the CPU. If you do find that you were able to use it by a BIOS change, please share that information with the forum. Thanks!

Virtual directory when using xml db http
Is it possible to create a virtual web directory (reachable using http) to a physical directory in my server?
I am running apex using xml db http with oracle 11.2.
thanksApache/Lighttpd. is it a free product?Yes both of them are free.
Please see http://www.beyondoracle.com/2008/04/05/reverse-proxying-apex-in-a-dmz/
I personally feel that Lighttpd works better specially if there is too much Ajax involved in your application but unfortunately I did not find any tutorial ready for that. Also for starters (in this particular subject) I recommend Apache since there is enough documentation available and you can get many people who can be helpful to setup this.

Apache web directory password protection
Hello all,
I seem to be having a problem password protecting a web directory. I have my .htpasswd file and all of my directory info set up in my httpd.conf file but when I go to this directory via the web, I get prompted for a username and password but when I enter my username and the password that is in my .htpasswd file, it simply keeps prompting me for my password as if the user or the password is incorrect. Can anyone give me any hints as to how I can fix this?lovell,
hi. glad you got it working. as for setting the permissions...
for our server, which is FreeBSD but essentially no different, i setup basic auth directories as follows:
username = My Admin User in all cases. I am assuming that www is the owner:group of the server process.
I chown -R the directory to username:www. I then set the permissions on the directory to 0750 which allows rwx for the user and r-x for the group. the execute bit should be set on the directory to allow traversal by the webserver.
as for the files in the directory, the chown -R of the directory should set all content ownership to username:www. Then I chmod all contents to 0640. this allows the owner to read and write and the webserver to read only. this does not allow any permission for folks outside of the owner or members of the www group (e.g. via terminal or ssh).
now, the auth method of the webserver should be able to determine who has read access to the files. in your case, this is for the user 'lmcilwain'. e.g. only the user entering the proper credentials into the authorization box should be able to view the files (at least through their browser).
remember, too, that basic auth passes passwords in plain-text, so if bad people want to intercept your password and username, they can do this if they really want to.
that being said, basic auth is ok for things like pdf documents and whatnot. i wouldn't put anything terribly important in a directory 'protected' by basic auth, however.
cheers,
b

Does the latest cFP product offering support web services like the cRIO?
I'm wondering if the cFP family supports web services like cRIO. I used cFP with LV8.5 a few years ago and there was no support.
Hello,
Yes you can. The process for running a web service from a cFP RT controller is the same for a cRIO. The procedure is documented in the article Running a Web Service from a Real-Time Target. Let me know if you have any questions.

How to open up a public web directory under apache
We have 7 2005Q4 installed, and right now the entire web tree is protected. Is there a way to create a Policy to open up a public web directory for all users?
thanks. So you are reading this file in a standalone version of Acrobat? If so then use the PDF Open Parameters /a option via the command line.
Sabian
Example:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat>Acrobat.exe /A "zoom=1000=OpenActions" "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\SimpleSubmit.pdf"
Where:
Path to Acrobat: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat>Acrobat.exe
Note: The example starts in the Acrobat application directory
Switch: /A
Parameter Syntax: "zoom=1000=OpenActions"
Path to file: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\SimpleSubmit.pdf"
Note: The quotes are very important for the syntax to work appropriately. -

It's well known for causing problems on Macs. You don't need any AV like that. Uninstall it and see if the crashes stop. Uninstall it whether they stop or not.

Likely suspect as WebKit is intimately involved with Safari.

Best combination of technologies for Java db-supported web application?
Hi everyone!
I was given the task to develop a Java database-supported web application and am now wondering what combination of technologies would best fit my requirements.
Basically, I am supposed to transform an "Excel-based" application into a Java-based web application that can be run in a browser in our intranet (I know, that's what a web application is supposed to do).
The Excel application consist of an Excel sheet that holds all the data and a VBA form, that shows and lets you edit all the details/fields of a row and lets you navigate through the rows. Furthermore there are certain macros to filter the data table.
Now, to transform the application, all data from Excel will be moved to an Oracle relational database and I want to rebuild the functionality with Java.
Consequently, the Java application is intended to...
- output the table as is in the browser
- easily let you filter the data of the table
- let you create (and save) custom filters
- show detail view of a row
- navigate through the rows of the (filtered) table
- save the data that is entered/edited/deleted in the detail view back to the table in the database
So, what are the best (and easiest to use) tools and technologies to develop such an application?
Currently my reasearch has led me to the following conclusions:
*1.* Architecture: I need a three-tier client-server application, which lead us to using the J2EE platform, right?
*2.* For the persistence layer I somehow have to map the database table to a Java object,
- either doing it completely manually (coding) using JDBC
- or using EJB3 / Java Persistence API / Hibernate to get at least the getters and setters auto-generated, right?
Please, correct me whenever i got something wrong!
Oracle JDeveloper supports the mapping process with a wizard when using EJB3 and JPA
(http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe1013jdev/10131/ejb_and_jpa/master-detail_pagewith_ejb.htm)
Is there something comparable available for Eclipse?
*3.* I'd like to use Java Server Faces for the UI. Besides the reference implementation there are several other implementations with additional components for e.g. displaying tables. There are:
- Apache MyFaces Trinidad (former ADF Faces, although ADF Faces looks different/has different style sheet than Trinidad?)
- NetBeans Visual Web tools (which look quite nice in the tutorial, but require the NetBeans IDE, I guess?! Tutorial: http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/web/web-jpa.html
*4.* What IDE would you recommend? Should have a WYSIWYG editor for the JSF files and should support me as much as possible as a Java Learner!
- JDeveloper
- Eclipse (+Plugins?)
- NetBeans
- MyEclipse (only if there is a free version out there, I have read about an Eclipse plug-in, but don't know if that was free...)
*5.* Do you know some good and easy-to-understand tutorials covering this problem?
*6.* What other aspects should I think of? Are there certain technologies for the business logic or just normal JavaBeans? What about SessionBeans and ManagedBeans?
Any help, answers, ideas, explanations, comments, recommendations, will be highly appreciated!
Cheers,
ChrisThanks paulcw, for your quick reply and helpful comments!
The whole thing is getting bigger than I thought...
Actually this is a 1-man-project, that I am supposed to realise for small department during my internship in a big company.
Maybe a more detailed description of the structure may help you to understand what I actually need.
The table of concern, is an overview of certain projects inside the company and read-only, as it is a view on another database uniting data relevant for the department.
Then there is a second table for additional data (specific for the department) for each project. This data has to be entered, modified, deleted with the new application, while the data from the first table is only displayed.
1) In this case, is AJAX / JavaScript still necessarily needed?
2) EJB and Hibernate sound like overkill to me as well, but what would be the alternatives? JDBC, SQL queries and rowSets? And are the first mentioned really so hard to use?
3) Do you have any recommendations on how to solve the multiple access problem (I'm sure, I'm not the only one with this kind of problem...)?
Thanks to everyone in advance!

when I enter a web address, hitting enter does not bring it up. I have to use my mouse and click "go to address" arrow. This only recently started. How do I fix this?
When I open firefox my home page comes right up, but, anything I enter after that does not open by hitting enter.
Please advice,
AnitaProbably caused by an extension that you have installed. <br />

Hi All, I plugged my iPhone into my laptop and I was asked to upgrade my iTunes software. It took more than seven hours and just to be told that my SIM card does not appear to be supported. Since then I can not use my iPhone. I am lost plse help. Jam53
Every time I switch on the iPhone, the iTunes icon is displayed together with a USB icon and Emergency call message appears on the screen in many languages. When I touch the i symbol I get the following information IMEI: **** AND ICCID: ****
However, the iphone is visible in the Devices directory in iTunes. I changed my SIM card but still can not be recognized by the iPhone.
<Edited By Host>Do you mean when you say its locked to another carrier other then the one im using, that maybe my insurance sent me an iphone thats for a different network for example orange and not mine which is o2?

I know this question has been asked before, but never for R2, that I can tell, and the posted fixes aren't working. I have just installed SCVMM 2008 R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, using a remote SQL 2008 SP1 database. When I attempt to connect to SCVMM, I get the following error:
"The SQL Server service account does not have permission to access Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).
Ensure that the SQL Server service is running under a domain account or a computer account that has permission to access AD DS. For more information, see "Some applications and APIs require access to authorization information on account objects" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=121054.
ID: 2607"
What I've seen online is that this is usually becuase the domain account SCVMM is running as does not have the proper permissions on the SQL database. Here's what I've confirmed:
1) My SCVMM service account is a local admin on the SCVMM server
2) My SCVMM service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
3) My SQL service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
4) My SQL service account is a domain user (even made it a domain admin, just in case, and it still "doesn't have access to AD DS," which is obviously untrue)
5) Neither service account is locked out
Has anyone run in to this? It says in Technet that remote SQL 2008 is supported, as long as the SQL management studio is installed to the SCVMM server, and I installed and patched before I began the SCVMM installation. I just don't know what else to try - I have no errors in event logs, no issues during the installation itself...
Andrew ToppThat answer was very unhelpful fr33m4n. The individual mentions that they've received the error that points to the KB article. I currently receive the same error -- there seems to be no resolution. I've run the Microsoft VBS script to add TAUG to the WAAG
as suggested by 331951, and that made absolutely no difference.
1) My SCVMM service account is a local admin on the SCVMM server
2) My SCVMM service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
3) My SQL service account is a dbowner on the SCVMM database in SQL
4) My SQL service account is a domain user (even made it a domain admin, just in case, and it still
"doesn't have access to AD DS," which is obviously untrue)
The user is also a member of WAAG, the machines have delegated authority to each other. Is there any other solution? -
Question
HP 8500 printer will not print fast on firefox, but does on Safari. HP support says it is a problem with firefox. Can you help me out? editThank you for posting your list of installed Extensions. One of them might be intercepting the menu command. Since you have the Add-on Compatibility Reporter, it's possible that an older add-on that doesn't actually work well with Firefox 5 could be to blame. Could you try disabling the "HP Smart Web Printing" extension and see whether that makes any difference?
Also, you can simulate a print button on a web site by pasting this to the location bar and pressing Enter. You also can save it as a bookmark for easier access (when scripts are saved as bookmarks, we call them bookmarklets). Hopefully you won't need it for long.
