Does Aperture have Exposure help?

Hi,
I have only been using Aperture for a very short amount of time and thus may have overlooked this feature.
In Camera Raw when viewing a RAW files I can hold down alt whilst moving the exposure slider, then it will show me if my Highlights / low-lights are blown?
Does Aperture have similar functionality?
Grant

it sure does, at least of the highlights. from the view menu choose "highlight hot spots" or something like that. i think the keyboard short cut is Option-Shift-H.
with this menu item enabled, as you slide the exposure (or any other adjustment for that matter) you'll see the hot spots highlighted in red.
hope that was helpful.

  • Does Aperture have layers, such as Photoshop. I have to make one photo out of two photo's.

Does Aperture have layers like in Photoshop? I have to make 1 photo out of two. This is an assignment for the Fotovakschool.

As Alan pointed out Aperture does not do layers. While the plugin he pointed to seems interesting (had never seen it before) it is on the pricey side for what it does.
You could use either GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program which is free or else Pixelmator from the Mac App  Store for $30, as Apertures external editor. In either case you'll get a app that will do more for you then just layers.

  • Does Aperture have a salt and pepper filter

I have scanned around 3000 photos and imported into iPhoto.  On enlargement many have dozens of small white spot and tiny hair imperfections.  In iPhoto these can be deleted individually by using the retouch tool.  Does Aperture (or hidden in iPhoto) support a tool for automatic, mass deletion of these spots?  I understand this can be called a salt and pepper filter, or perhaps de-speckle.  Notes: the speckles are random so not caused by a scanner setting.  The scanner plate was cleaned as well as possible and the photos were cleaned as best as possible given they were pulled from old albums.  Re-scanning is not an option.  i want to retain as much clarity as possible so do not want a general blur.  For simplicity I want to remain using an Apple product rather than an alternate photo-editing tool.  Thanks for reading. Vince

No, Aperture does not have Speckle filters. But your white spots and lines are not exactly Speckle noise. For a real Speckle noise (Salt and Pepper) you would have very dark spots as well.
In Aperture you could try to reduce the white spots and lines by applying the smoothing brush selectively to the darker areas, but that will only soften the spots, not remove them completely. Or use the "Repair" tool to remove the spots.
One filter that works well with small, bright spots is the median filter, but that is missing in Aperture. In Photoshop or similar external editors you can use the  filter "Expend dark areas" (I am not sure how this filter is called in the english version - my Photoshop has german menus). This will shrink the white spots and white lines by expanding the darker regions. You need to set the radius to half of the size of the spots.

  • Once and for all, how does one stop losing music on IPOD TOUCH? WHAT settings do you people use to stop losing music? Does anybody have any help with this? Does any body have any help at all? APPLE offers no help!!!!!!!!!

I constantly loss my music!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I constantly loss my music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need help to stop this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, is the music only disappearing from your iPod, or from your iTunes Library as well?
From your other thread, I gather you swap between Manually Managing and Syncing. This is a bad idea, it will lead to confusion on your part about what should be on the iPod. You'll make a choice that iTunes later overrides - because you've told it to. Choose one method or the other, not both.
Peresonally, I recommend using the iTunes Sync process. Using Sync will not prevent you from deciding what's on your iPod. You will still have a free and full choice in that. The Sync process will however, make it far easier for you to put everything back onto your iPod in the event that you need to Restore your iPod, or when you replace this iPod with a newer one.
Back to your issue though. Is the music, missing from your iPod, still in your Library?

  • What does Java3d have to help with 3d model rendering?

Well, basically i spent a few hours the other day writing a basic model rendering application, it uses the java.awt.Graphics class for the drawing and the java.awt.Canvas class for the main applet.
Now, it was a pretty hard project for me in my opinion as i have never attempted anything like it before, now, in using the awt Graphics class you have to work everything out yourself.
    For example;
You have your model, this has x, y and z vertices, then you have your faces, which are triangles which link up 3 of the vertices to make a face or skin for the model. After this you have your "camera" or "view point", this relates to the x, y and z rotations, offset (for zooming) and transitions of all of the above data, then after all this you can finally create the triangle or face by using the Polygon class and inputing the x, y and z point values.
Now, i want to know if Java 3d has any of the above stuff already there for you to take advantage of, for example also lighting effects, such as the ability to add shadows.
Ive already looked through the Java 3d tutorial pdf but i couldn't see anything that relates to creating your own model's, the only thing i saw were pre-programmed shapes such as cubes and other polygons.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi ,
Java 3d has many effects ready , like shadows , raytrace and... .
I think you may have 5 issues ,
    1. Geometry and object models
    2. Lighting
    3. camera and rendering
    4. Sound
    5. Animation
for geometry , best solution is using modeling tools like 3D Studio Max , export model and import in your program.
for Lighting it has many light types , but 'm not good at using them ,
for camera it has lots of usefull stuff . even special rendering for 3dGlasses !
for Sound , as i know it supports 3d sound engine that renders your sound. ( I mean if your avator is close to sound source , sound is stronger , if source is left hand of avator , sound will apear in left speaker)

  • Does aperture have templates for non-standard aspect ratios?

i am not yet an aperture user, but i am interested in switching to it to improve on the photo book quality WRT iPhoto.
i like very much to have photos with non-standard aspect ratios, either square or wide (like 3:1). these are cropped very badly by iPhoto; is it better in Aperture?
    thanks,
    b.

The templates my have a few variations that use non-standard ratios, but you can specify any photo box ratio. You have the option to either right click and choose it from a list, or choose the custom option from that pull list, or use the "Size & Position" pane of the Aperture UI to specify an exact size, angle, and border thickness and color of a photobox. This works similar to the controls in Pages, but without some of the nice effects like transparency and drop shadows.
If you want to create custom layouts, read the "Working with Custom Themes" section on page 609 of the user manual (download it with the trial). The trial is good for 30 days, so why not give it a spin, and if you don't think it's worth the $199, then you can always delete it at no cost to you other than your time.

  • Does Aperture have a movie management plugin?

    Hi there,
I shoot a lot of small movies, along with photos, that I want to keep in the same folders. iView Media Pro did this nicely, but Microsoft took it over (renamed it as Media Expressions) and now seems to be letting it die. I've been told that neither of the obvious alternatives, Aperture or Lightroom, manages movie files, but someone recently pointed out that there's a plugin for Lightroom that does just this:
    it's called 'Video-Asset Management plug-in'.
I'd prefer to stay with Apple, since I use a Mac, so I thought I'd see if there's a similar plugin for Aperture. Anyone know?
    thanks, Malcolm

    WOW such support . . .
The only import offered is “in place, without moving”.
can't do any editing (altho why would you want to in an IMAGE editing program.)
Subsequent changes to the video are not reflected in Lightroom.
and to top it off . . .
    No export.
    Ya . . . big support . . .

  • Does Aperture make copies when you edit--like iPhoto?

Sorry to take up time with such a simple question.
But, my wife is the family photo editor--and she hates iPhoto's non-intuitive way of making duplicates whenever she edits a photo. Inevitably, whenever she tries to get back to the edited version of the photo, she can't find it--or finds the "wrong" one and ends up sending it to the grandparents, etc...
My question is this: Does Aperture have the ability to simply save the edited photo and permanently trash the original? If so, is the program set up that way as a default setting? Apart from the confusion that iPhoto causes, it really starts to take up valuable drive space with several versions of the same photo...
Thanks in advance for your help.

it does not make dups ... especially not in the way you are thinking ...
unless you tell it to make a new version when editing - but that is not a full copy, just an instruction to make a second version ...
aperture uses versions to make changes and holds the instructions in small little files ...
i can make 80 different versions of one master file and never equal double the size of the original (ok 80 may be overstating but you get my point) ...
it uses non-destructive editing, your original is never touched ... if you need a copy of a version, simply export it out ... you will never trash the original, unless you export a version, delete the master and then reimpor the version as a master ...
    hope this helps ...

oh, the only time it will create a new physical file is if you decide to open the master in say photoshop, then it will create (based on your prefs) a new tiff or psd and add that to your library ...

  • Does Aperture support making Panoramic Stitches?

One of the most fun I have had on a digital machine is making Panorama Images. Does Aperture have an automatic stitch engine to put together images to make a 180 or 360 view called a Panoramic Image?

    Hi
It will come eventually I guess, there are some great plug-in's for Aperture, which can be used from within Aperture. When you wish to use a plug-in you simply right click the image or images you wish to use with say, Photoshop or, Noise Ninja, then click >"edit with"..... and select your plug-in.
    This works well.....
Remembering ( in Aperture's defence ) that Aperture is a powerful image management system, with some excellent editing capabilities.

  • Does Aperture import movies? If so, can I use Aperture to edit them?

iPhoto allowed me to organize video as well as photos. Does Aperture have that capability? If so, can I also use Aperture to edit videos? If not, does that editing have to occur in iMovie?

See  Aperture 3: About Video and Audio formats in Aperture but notice the top of the document it says this is an example of some supported formats so if your's isn't listed it still Aperture still might import it.

  • Does it have content aware healing

Does aperture have content aware healing brushes

Aperture has a Retouch Brush that works similar to Photoshop's Spot Healing Brush.  This works very well for removing spots left by sensor dust, skin blemishes, etc.  It will not create data in the way that Photoshop's Content-aware Fill does.  Content-aware healing, though, Aperture handles well.
Note, too, that Aperture allows the use of an external editor.  Everyone I know using Aperture for most of the development work done on digital camera files, but keeps Photoshop or another graphics program on hand for the few cases where it is needed.

  • Does aperture do camera specific fixes?

My camera (Sony NEX6) requires a software to fix the distortion when shooting with the kit lens. It's usually done by the camera but if I'm shooting RAW then you have to get a software to do it. Sony supply this software that does the fixing but does Aperture have this feature built in? Is it not working for me because my camera is too new?

    aapl.crox wrote:
So I guess my best alternative right now is to use other software and export it as TIFF? I guess I will lose some data?
Use 16-bit TIFF and you'll be hard-pressed to _find_ anything missing.  The disadvantages of 16-bit TIFF compared to RAW are:
    - can be larger (many mfr's use a near-lossless RAW compression algorithm -- it removes data that the camera records but which the eye can't see)
    - WB, white point, black point, and other parameters are "baked into" the file, resulting in a less "head-room" for adjustments.
I don't know the Sony software, but you might, as a starting workflow, go from camera to Sony's software, convert from RAW, set the above parameters, apply lens correction, export as 16-bit TIFF, and import into Aperture.  You should keep your RAW files in case you want/need to go back to them, but in most cases having the corrected 16-bit TIFF as your Original in Aperture is likely to be more than usable.
I do something similar with a Sigma camera (DP2M).  For me, the serpentine workaround adds enough encumbrance to outweigh whatever benefits the camera provides, so I end up dorking around in my full-frame truck when a sports car might win me more dates.  Others feel otherwise  .

You are posting in the "icloud on my mac" forum, but your profile mentions Windows.  If using a mac, you need to have iphoto or aperture installed in order to receive new photos via photo stream.  If using windows, try posting in the iCloud on a PC forum.  You'll get better help there.
