Does Aperture mishandle Places like iPhoto 11?

Background to Question
In iPhoto, if you create a place, it gets not only a pin but also a vicinity, a circle centered at the pin.  Gotcha #1:  The vicinity doesn't display on the tiny map where you assign a place to a photo.  You have to go to Manage My Places to see it.  In IPhoto, if the vicinities of two places over lap, photos assigned to one place might be reassigned to the other.  ("Might" is italicized because this seems to depend on the version of iPhoto 11, although regardless of whether they are reassigned or not, overlapping vicinities cause grief, as documented in other threads.)
The Question
Does anybody have experience with Aperture?  Is there such a thing as vicinity for user-created places, and if so, do overlapping vicinities cause problems?
Obviously, I am considering switching to Aperture, as my iPhoto Library is quite large (~ 250 GB, or 35,000 photos).

Richard

Richard,
Do I assume correctly that, when I import a photo with geocoding in the EXIF data I have an opportunity to assign that point a name, e.g., "My House"?
Yes, when your images have geographic coordinates assigned, they will appear on the map in places view, marked by pins. You can define a new place at this position - click the pin, ctrl-click the label with a default name, and select to create a new place.
Q2.  Does that point become one of My Places, which I then can Manage?
Yes, exactly. Or you can create new places by seelcting an image and assigning a new place, that you create by clicking a place on the map.
Click a center point and drag the radius handles, to adjust te size of the place. (Q3)
I live in the small city of Basel, Switzerland.
Small city don't let that hear other people from Switzerland!  A beautiful city!
And, of course, creatong a new place couldn't be any more complicated!
I don't find it difficult to create places, but they are not stored in the EXIF tags, that other programs understand. That is why I assign them before. I use an AMOD geotracker or a Garmin GPS, record tracks while I am taking photos, and use Jetphoto Studio to assign the photos to the tracks. Then I import and all images appear on the map.

  • Does Aperture recognize additions to iPhoto LIbrary?

I've imported my iPhoto library, letting Aperture reference back to the images in the iPhoto library.
My question is... how do I update the aperture library when new additions have been made to the iPhoto library? It doesn't seem to happen automatically and reimporting the iPhoto library doesn't seem to be the answer (but perhaps I'm wrong). Any suggestions?

Do you have any photos that don't fit the criteria for the tv (should be JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF or PNG - some TIFFs won't work) or perhaps you have an illegal character (such as '/') in the filename or keywords. You could try making some new albums and slowly adding files to isolate culprits if you think this might be the case.

  • Does Aperture have a salt and pepper filter

I have scanned around 3000 photos and imported into iPhoto.  On enlargement many have dozens of small white spot and tiny hair imperfections.  In iPhoto these can be deleted individually by using the retouch tool.  Does Aperture (or hidden in iPhoto) support a tool for automatic, mass deletion of these spots?  I understand this can be called a salt and pepper filter, or perhaps de-speckle.  Notes: the speckles are random so not caused by a scanner setting.  The scanner plate was cleaned as well as possible and the photos were cleaned as best as possible given they were pulled from old albums.  Re-scanning is not an option.  i want to retain as much clarity as possible so do not want a general blur.  For simplicity I want to remain using an Apple product rather than an alternate photo-editing tool.  Thanks for reading. Vince

No, Aperture does not have Speckle filters. But your white spots and lines are not exactly Speckle noise. For a real Speckle noise (Salt and Pepper) you would have very dark spots as well.
In Aperture you could try to reduce the white spots and lines by applying the smoothing brush selectively to the darker areas, but that will only soften the spots, not remove them completely. Or use the "Repair" tool to remove the spots.
One filter that works well with small, bright spots is the median filter, but that is missing in Aperture. In Photoshop or similar external editors you can use the  filter "Expend dark areas" (I am not sure how this filter is called in the english version - my Photoshop has german menus). This will shrink the white spots and white lines by expanding the darker regions. You need to set the radius to half of the size of the spots.

  • Does Aperture have layers, such as Photoshop. I have to make one photo out of two photo's.

Does Aperture have layers like in Photoshop? I have to make 1 photo out of two. This is an assignment for the Fotovakschool.

As Alan pointed out Aperture does not do layers. While the plugin he pointed to seems interesting (had never seen it before) it is on the pricey side for what it does.
You could use either GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program which is free or else Pixelmator from the Mac App  Store for $30, as Apertures external editor. In either case you'll get a app that will do more for you then just layers.

  • Does Aperture make copies when you edit--like iPhoto?

Sorry to take up time with such a simple question.
But, my wife is the family photo editor--and she hates iPhoto's non-intuitive way of making duplicates whenever she edits a photo. Inevitably, whenever she tries to get back to the edited version of the photo, she can't find it--or finds the "wrong" one and ends up sending it to the grandparents, etc...
My question is this: Does Aperture have the ability to simply save the edited photo and permanently trash the original? If so, is the program set up that way as a default setting? Apart from the confusion that iPhoto causes, it really starts to take up valuable drive space with several versions of the same photo...
Thanks in advance for your help.

it does not make dups ... especially not in the way you are thinking ...
unless you tell it to make a new version when editing - but that is not a full copy, just an instruction to make a second version ...
aperture uses versions to make changes and holds the instructions in small little files ...
i can make 80 different versions of one master file and never equal double the size of the original (ok 80 may be overstating but you get my point) ...
it uses non-destructive editing, your original is never touched ... if you need a copy of a version, simply export it out ... you will never trash the original, unless you export a version, delete the master and then reimpor the version as a master ...
    hope this helps ...

oh, the only time it will create a new physical file is if you decide to open the master in say photoshop, then it will create (based on your prefs) a new tiff or psd and add that to your library ...

  • I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer

I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer in Aperture 3.2.1

Hello Wontolla, I meant the Aperture main menu, there is a sub menu "View", see the Screenshot:
Set all flags in the Metadata Display submenu as I did,  to show Metadata in Viewer and Browser, and then select "Customize"
Pick the Metadata fields you want to display for all views.
Make sure, that "Contents -> Keywords" is checked.

  • Way to increase DPI setting in aperture like iPhoto?

    Hi
There was a way in iPhoto to change the plist file to have it generate a higher res book prior to uploading to Apple - depending on whom you spoke with, this made a minor or major difference. Is anyone aware of something like this for Aperture?

It was only iPhoto 5 that had the plist hack change, iPhoto 6 produces 300dpi books as standard, as does Aperture - there is no need to increase the dpi as you can't increase the printing size through the print services anyway.

  • Photos does not support external editing like iPhoto. Is there likely to be an upgrade to change this or will I abandon Photos for software that does support editing in Photoshop?

Photos does not support external editing like iPhoto. Is there likely to be an upgrade to change this or will I abandon Photos for software that does support editing in Photoshop?

iPhoto does work and there is an upgrade:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Using Places in iPhoto with aperture photos

If we have a picture in aperture with the City and Country Name attribute filleds, this picture in iphoto will not have the info. So, iPhoto no uses the EXIF City and Country Name fields.
are there any solution to use the exif info filled in apeture with Places in iPhoto?
    Thanks.

I am not familiar with Aperture so I don't know what it can do or if any helper programs/plug ins will do with Aperture.
However there are other Geotagging programs out there. One that is very easy to use in conjunction with Google Earth is Graphics Connverter. With GC, you can open Google Earth, find the location of you want to tag your photo with, then switch over to GC and use the menu item to geotag the selected photos (you can do many photos at once) with the currently displayed Google Earth location. In addition there is a menu command to simply type in coordinates if you do not want to use Google Earth. GC can also tag using GPS data logger files.
GC will write the coordinates to the EXIF data and I have done it myself on both normal JPGs as well as Olympus RAW format. I know when I geotag with GC and then add the photos to iPhoto, iPhoto sees the tags just fine and show their locations. I assume Aperture would do the same.
iPhoto can tag photos as well, but it only writes the data to the database and doesn't actually add the info to the EXIF of the photos themselves until you export the photos out of iPhoto. Do to do it with iPhoto is a multi step process that would require adding them to iPhoto, tagging them, then exporting them back out of iPhoto. I think CG would be an easier solution.

  • Using Aperture like iPhoto

Hopefully this will be my last dumb question. I disabled the previews stuff and now the program runs much better, but still not as smooth as expected.
One question I have is, when I am in the layout mode (altcmdb) - the one where it gives you all the thumbnails...
How do I make it work like iPhoto, where I can double click on the picture and it shows me the big photo, then after I double click on the photo, it saves then goes back into the thumbnail mode?
    Thanks.

In Aperture if you press CommandOptionB you will be in mode Browser. If you press W the Projects Panel will disappear. If you double click an image it will revert to the standard mode with the picture selected in the Viewer. You can make adjustments and press CommandOptionB to revert to the Browser mode again. If you choose once you are in Standard Mode, you can press F and go to full screen mode.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Both Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11 are compatible with Photo Stream. However, note that the most recent iPhoto '11 and Aperture 3 versions use the same library, so your library will be upgraded, and it doesn't mind if you install iPhoto '11 or Aperture 3. That's why I recommend you to make a backup of your iPhoto library before installing Aperture or upgrading iPhoto

    Galdaplh,
What do you mean by "reverting to photo"?  "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails.  You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

  • Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

    It doesn't.
When you import  Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg preview of the Raw automatically. When you import from iPhoto then Aperture brings over both versions.

  • How well does a GPS camera function with Places in iPhoto?

    Hello,
I am considering buying a GPS camera (Nikon Coolpix AW110 to be exact). Does anyone know how this functions with Places in iPhoto?
    Regards,
    Tom

As long as the camera writes the data to the correct fields in the Metadata of the image, it will work. I would expect that the Nikon should do that.
