Does Aperture need to be on my computer's internal HD to be a managed library?

My main Aperture Library (I have 5, but I'll get to that on another post) is on an external HD. If I store masters on this AL, will they become managed or are they referenced because the library is on an external HD?
Also, I read a discussion where someone advised to put the masters on an external HD and keep the library on the internal. How would I do this?
In Preferences, the library location is set to /Volumes/Audio/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary (Volumes/Audio is the external drive) and when I import, Store Files is set to Pictures. So does this mean I haven't been storing them in Aperture Library, but instead, in Pictures? Would these be referenced Masters then?
Thank you,
sophie

Yes, when you elect to store the files anywhere other than in the Aperture library, they are Referenced files.
In your case, becasue you have a Pictures folder on both your internal and external drive, you should double check which one is actually being used. Based on your previous post, I think it is the external drive folder called Pictures.

No, the type of drive doesn't affect whether they are Managed or Referenced. It is soley based on whether the files are stored inside or outside of the Aperture library.

By having the Aperture Library stored on your internal drive, but the images stored outside of the Library (Referenced) on your external drive. It sounds like you have already been doing the last part (storing the files as referenced on the external), so to get to this scenario, you would simply use finder to move your library from the external drive to the internal drive.
You can use an Aperture filter (next to the search box in viewer) over all your images, to check for images with 'File
Status = Managed' or 'File Status = Referenced' to identify the status of all your files.

  • Does Aperture need to be open to import from photo stream?

    Hi,
My photostream is linked to Aperture.  Does Aperture need to be open to import from photo stream or will it still import while it's not running?
    Thanks!

Might seem silly but is there any way to request a daemon be created to handle this magically in the background? Or open and push iPhoto to the background so I don't know its running?

  • Can I set up home sharing from my iPad? Or does it need to be a "real" computer?

I'm trying to set up my new Apple TV on home sharing.  I'm doing it from my iPad.  When I go into iTunes from my iPad, it doesn't give me the "advanced" option.
Do I need to set this up from my PC?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes you can set up homesharing on your iPad (settings > music), however the library won't display on the Apple TV as it does from itunes on a computer. Use AirPlay from the ipad to play music from it on the Apple TV.

  • Does Itunes need to be open on my Mac for other computers to access the Library?

I have my Mac set to wake for network, but if I don't have Itunes open it seems none of the other computers can access the library. I don't keep Itunes open when I'm not using it, because I spend most of my time in Aperture and the software seems to compete for resources, with Itunes slowing my Aperture program down significantly. Ideally, I'd like to have Itunes closed on my machine but have other Mac's in the house still able to access the library. I've tried importing the library to other macs, but it's far too large.

    Yes.

I cannot download the app - it says I need to download on a computer which i am doing.  What else do I need to do?

If you can't upgrade to ML, your best bet would be to purchase an iWork DVD from someplace like Amazon.

  • Does Aperture 3 have built in PhotoShare/iCloud capabilities or do I need a newer version of iPhoto as well?  I'm running iPhoto '09 and am to scared to switch to the newer version of iPhoto..?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Both Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11 are compatible with Photo Stream. However, note that the most recent iPhoto '11 and Aperture 3 versions use the same library, so your library will be upgraded, and it doesn't mind if you install iPhoto '11 or Aperture 3. That's why I recommend you to make a backup of your iPhoto library before installing Aperture or upgrading iPhoto

  • Does aperture 2.1 library need to be on the system partition ??

    Hi !
Does aperture 2.1 library need to be on the system partition ??
Aperture library overfilled my system partition,
So I moved it to another partition by Aperture preferences.
    Aperture sees where it is,
but wants to set up a new library,
I suppose on my full system partition.
    Any suggestions are appreciated,
    as you might guess,
    I am new at Aperture.
Thanks for any interest and help.
    Ken

No the Aperture Library does not need to be on the same partition with the System. It should, however, be on an internal or eSATA-connected drive.
Generally partitioning is a waste of spce. Please describe your exact setup of hard drives and partitions.
What most folks really should have is a Referenced-Masters Library, which deals with the issue of overfilling drives.

Hi, Santosh..., and welcome to the Community,
I would recommend testing the SMS reply forwarding to your mobile number.  Depending upon the results and if this works for you, you could then contact Skype Customer Service to cancel and request a refund.
In other words, SMS will be received via your mobile number, not via your Skype Number.

  • Does Aperture really need 25GB of thumbnails?

I know what thumbnails are and I understand that aperture needs them in order for me to view the files in the browser.
But for a 33K image library, does aperture really need 35GB of thumbnails? Surely each image only needs to be a few KB?
Is there any way to reduce the thumbnail foot print? It would enable me to comfortably store the Library on the boot SSD.
    Regards

Earlier versions of aperture3 had issues with generating thumbnails and ballooning size.
Thumbnails in aperture are actually about 1024x1024 - My 30K refrenced library has about 9GB of thumbnails.
Since you have an SSD you will love doing a referenced library setup on the ssd - the library FLIES on an SSD since there are so many small files to deal with - My recommendation would be to right click and inspect the contents of your Library, move the thumbnails out of the folder, copy the library (without the thumbnails) to your SSD, You can then put the old thumbnails folder back in your old library after the copy - open the library up on the SSD and let aperture rebuild the thumbnails from scratch on your SSD.

Read the small print on your power brick. It handles 110 - 240 volts automatically. All you need is a plug adapter to make your current wall plug fit the European wall sockets.

  • Does aperture 3.5 support RAW for Olympus E-M1

Does Aperture 3.5 support RAW for the new Olympus E-M! camera yet?
    Thanks

I understand, why you are cautious with updates and do not want to jump on the bandwaggon, since you need to keep your equipment working. The upgrade to Mt. Lion is worth it. It makes Lion more usuable.
Why is EM-1 RAW compatibility NOT installable on OS 10.7.5...!
SInce Lion has Apple changed the raw support strategy. Raw support is now part of the operating system and no longer an update to the applications. Apple did not say why, we can only speculate - but this new strategy makes it possible to write the raw support, so that it will profit from the better support for multi kernel processors in the newer systems, so that raw developement can be computed more efficiently on the new MacPros.

  • How does Aperture handle file structure

I have been working with iPhoto since its infancy and have one big issue with it, namely that it is such a closed system. I dislike that everything needs to be imported and exported to use it elsewhere, clogging up my computer with all these duplicates. Does Aperture handle that better? I spent 2 hours reading different reviews and discussions and for some reason, nobody seems to discuss exactly that, maybe most people don't mind to have a vault structure? If so, how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
    Thanks ~ Barb

namely that it is such a closed system.
    It's not. It's a Database and this
    everything needs to be imported...
is a characteristic of databases. This
and exported to use it elsewhere
is just not true if you use any of the very many ways that the OS and other applications integrate with iPhoto. I rarely, if ever, exported from iPhoto when it was my primary Photo app.
The point is not to defend iPhoto, but if the database aspect of it irritates you then run a mile from Aperture. Everything has to be imported and can be accessed only in (pretty much) the same ways as they can be in iPhoto.
how do you handle sharing files outside of the tools like Facebook export etc that are offered?
Here's a stock answer I use over on the iPhoto forum. You can pretty much swap the word 'Aperture' for iPhoto:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
+*(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)+*
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Regards

  • How does Aperture handle RAW from Canon S90

I have my Canon S90 set to RAW plus jpeg. I don't see any of the RAW photos in Aperture 3, just the JPEGs.
What's happening to the RAW images?

"Do you have a very specific requirement That needs both. ? If not just use raw, Aperture will produce any number of file formats from the raw file when required, but Aperture does not need them."
Thanks for your very hepful comment.
The only reason I'm using both RAW and JPEG is that I'd read that the Canon S90 does its image processing "in camera" for JPEG but relies on the Canon (computer) software to process RAW. That means that some distorted lines are fixed in camera in JPEG but not in RAW.
Normally, I'd greatly prefer RAW only for use in Aperture, that's a big advantage of using Aperture 3. However I worry that the lack of in camera processing for RAW would be a problem if I import directly into Aperture, instead of going through Canon software on my computer, which I prefer not to install.
If any body has experience with the S90 and Aperture using RAW, feel free to chime in.
