Does Aperture need to be open to import from photo stream?

Hi,
My photostream is linked to Aperture.  Does Aperture need to be open to import from photo stream or will it still import while it's not running?
Thanks!
Mavericks 10.9
Aperture 3.5

Might seem silly but is there any way to request a daemon be created to handle this magically in the background? Or open and push iPhoto to the background so I don't know its running?

  • Import from photo stream into Lightroom 5.7 - how can I import only new photos since first import of all photos in stream (mac)

    Hi
Importing my photos from photo stream (mac) went well, got 2012 photos out of my photo stream into LR 5.7 with the help of the new plug-in.
Now I have 3 new photo's in the stream and I want to add them to the library of LR.
When starting up the plug-in it tells me it will import 2015 photos, instead of just 3.
I hesitate to continue the process and to try my luck as I'm afraid I will end up with more than all 2012 photos doubled.
    Any experience out there yet?
    Thanks!
    Kind regards
    Jan

    Found it.
At first I was scared off because LR showed the same amount of photos to be imported the second time as it did before the first import.
Fortunately, the second import did nothing but import the new photos.
    Thanks.

  • How to prevent iPhoto to make an automatic event when importing from Photo stream

    Hi everyone,
My question is related to the Photo stream functionality in iPhoto.
Is possible to prevent iPhoto from making an automatic event when I import a photo from Photo stream. It is really annoying because of the fact that I use "events" for keeping my important photo's together (as many of you do I asume). Ofcourse after importing I can just delete it from my event section but is there a way to prevent it?
    Thanks.

No. Photostream creates an Event for each month.
iPhoto has many other tools for managing and categorising your Photos.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Why does deleting a photo from Photo Stream on my iPad also delete them from the album I just copied them to?

I'm working hard a mastering the details of icloud and iPhoto. I would like to have a well designed sets of pictures to carry around on the iPad, but after months it seems I'm still surprised when I open my photo app. Pictures I don't care about are there; pictures I tried to have available to show are missing. Well,  I'm slowly working through it. This is not my main question today but a referral to a good info source(s) would appreciated.
So why does it happen that when I copy pictures from Photo Stream to an existing album, then go and delete them from photo stream, they pictures are deleted from the album where I thought they would be safe?
    Thank you!

Pictures on Photo Stream remain there for only 30 days by design.  So if you setup PS on your Mac and add photos to it they will display on the iPad.  However, to remain on the iPad you will have to move them to the Camera Roll (I only have an iPhone and that's what it's called on it) in order to keep them permanently.  This screenshot shows the save options  on the iPhone when photos in the Photo Stream are seledted. Notice the option in the lower right hand corner:
It probably is similar on the iPad.
Or, you can put the photos in an album in iPhoto and connect the iPad to your Mac.  Open iTunes and go to the iPad's Pictures section.  There you can select the album in iPhoto and sync those photos to the iPad where they will be in the Camera Roll section.l

  • Importing photos from photo stream

Under iphoto, it used to be that photos would be pulled down from photo stream and an album for the month would be auto generated, housing all of the photos for that month that were imported from photo stream.
Under the new photos app, I see the current month (April 2015) but it's not updating with any new photos.
When I look at my photo stream (the main fire hose), my photos show there - just not in the auto-generated folder.
When I pull back and look at the April 2015 folder, it is housed under "iPhoto albums" ...
    My question is this:
Is this feature now retired?  Do I now have to manually create these monthly folders?
Differences between iPhoto and the Photos app do not exactly seem to be spelled out.

I'm also trying to figure some of this out... looking to migrate from Aperture.
When migrating your old library to Photos, your "April 2015" photo stream was converted to a Photos "album." This, along with your other iPhoto albums (Projects in Aperture) were placed in the "iPhoto albums" folder.
It doesn't seem that Photos creates new albums for Photo Streams. These photos are all pulled into the one "My Photo Stream" which seems to be a "smart" album.

  • Delete pictures from photo stream in aperture

Downloaded the new Aperture that allows you to delete pictures from Photo Stream.  I deleted photos but those photos remain on my iphone.  What did I do wrong?

You might try posting in the Aperture forum - there are some very knowledgeable participants there; in case you don't get any replies here.

  • Aperture photos from Photo Stream not syncing in iTunes

    Hi
I am running Aperture 3.4.3 on an iMac running 10.8.2.  I have Photo Stream enabled.  When I open Aperture, it downloads all the recent photos from Photo Stream and puts them in to one or more automatically created projects called something like "Mar 2013 Photo Stream".  As I understand it, Aperture is copying the photos from Photo Stream to these new projects, so when Photo Stream eventually deletes the photos (say because I reach the 1000 photo limit), the downloaded versions in Aperture won't affected.  So far, so good.
Because the new projects in Aperture start with the month name, I have taken to renaming these folders to something like "2013 03 March Photo Stream", and you can then sort them alphabetically.  This might be red herring though.
When I open iTunes and connect my iPhone, I have selected to sync photos from all Events in the last 12 months.  This should include all the projects that were created in Aperture.  This is where I hit the problem.  Some of the projects sync just fine.  Others do not.  When they don't sync, 2 things happen:
    1. The Events don't appear on the iPhone
    2. When I look in iTunes, all the affected Events have the same item count.  The item count is correct for one project, but not the others.  So, for example, I have 4 projects at the moment that won't sync, and all show in iTunes with an item count of 1.  Only one project actually contains 1 photo, the rest have many more.
I have tried all sorts of things in Aperture, such as rebuilding the data, deleting the iPod Photo Cache etc.
    Does anyone have any idea?
    Thanks.

As far as I can tell, my problems have been caused by me renaming the automatic import projects in Aperture.  I did notice that Aperture kept creating new empty projects for the same month.
This solution from Jannem1970, posted on this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3585677?start=0&tstart=0, seems to have done the trick for me.
    - turn off automatic import for Photo Stream;
    - identify 'the ghost'-projectfolders, select and delete them;
    - close Aperture (this saves the current setting and condition of your library);
    - open Aperture again;
    - turn on automatic import for Photo Stream.

  • Importing photos from Photo Stream not working properly

I've been trying to work out a way to import photos on my iMac and have Photo Stream push them to my MacBook so they end up in the same Event on both computers. If I have Automatic Upload turned on, the photos I import on my iMac get uploaded to Photo Stream before I get a chance to place them into my intended Event. So I tried turning Auto Upload off, importing photos, placing them into their proper Event, turning Auto Upload back on, and then dragging them to Photo Stream to upload them.
First, it seems like there should be an easier way. But also unfortunately, even though Help in iPhoto 11 (9.2) seems to say this should work (see below), my photos end up in my MacBook's Photo Stream folder, but not in the Event (with Automatic Import turned on on my MacBook). This is what is written in the Help documentation -
Note:  If iPhoto automatically imports a Photo Stream photo that was originally uploaded from a different iPhoto library, or from an Aperture library, iPhoto adds the photo to the Event that matches the one in the original library. If a matching Event isn’t in the destination library, iPhoto creates a new Event with the same name.
I wasn't able to find the photos anywhere in my MacBook Events. As indicated in the note above, they should have been automatically placed in a matching Event of the iMac's library. Any help is much appreciated.

Ever since I went to the cloud all of my new photos have show up in photo stream. I had hoped it would sync and update the events in Photos, no luck. I also uploaded a numbers document to iWork and and could only access it through Safari. The only option I had to actually open it on my iPad was 'open in iBooks'. Really! There's been other occasions of rocky starts so I hope iCloud improves. It has too.

  • Automatic Import Of Photo Streams I Subscribe To (not mine)

Sorry, if this question has already been answered, I could not find the info in my feeble search attempts.
My understanding of the Automatic Import setting for Aperture is that it automatically imports my Photo Stream and only my Photo Stream. Aperture automatically creates a new Project for each month of Photo Stream import.
It does not automatically import any photos from any of the other Photo Streams I'm subscribing to.
    Correct?
Is there a way to automatically import the photos from these other, subscribed to Photo Streams?
Could a Smart Album do this? I couldn't seem to figure out how to create one. I couldn't get the source to point to the specific Photo Stream.

It does not automatically import any photos from any of the other Photo Streams I'm subscribing to.
    Correct?
Yes, you have to import from the Shared Photo Szreams manually by dragging the items to a project in your library.
Is there a way to automatically import the photos from these other, subscribed to Photo Streams?
I don't know of any option in Aperture that could do this.
Could a Smart Album do this? I couldn't seem to figure out how to create one. I couldn't get the source to point to the specific Photo Stream.
Smart albums can only refer to library items that already have been imported. So that will not work.
You will see an alert in the Aperture item, if someone adds a photo to a shared stream. So simply import when you see the alert.
Sorry, I have not really a solution, unless you would be willing to write an Apple Script, that checks for new photos and imports.

  • Some iPhone 4S photos imported via Photo Stream are black

I'm seeing a whole bunch of iPhone 4S photos imported via Photo Stream as black images in latest iPhoto '11.  When I look at the original file in finder, it is intact, however the modified one is just a black image (which is what shows up in iPhoto).
This is very concerning.  I'm now manually re-importing all my 4S photos.
Strangely, the same photos that appear black in iPhoto Photo Stream are fine on my iPad and iPhone Photo Stream view.
So it seems that iPhoto is breaking them when it imports them.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How can I import photos from photo stream to windows photo gallery? These photos are not on the camera roll on my iPad but are from another iPad on the same iCloud account.

I work at a Learning Center that has 12 iPads on the same iTunes and iCloud account.  Each classroom uses an iPad assigned to their room to take photos.  Each of these photos then shows up in the Photo Stream in all 11 of the other iPads.  I have no trouble importing photos that are in the Camera Roll of any individual iPad, but I have not been able to import photos from the Photo Stream if the picture was not taken on the specific iPad I am using.  It is not feasible for me to collect all 12 iPads everyday to import everyones photos, so how can I use one "master" iPad that will let me import photos from the Photo Stream since it has all the photos that everyone has taken?

You downloaded an iCloud backup to your PC?  I assume you mean you downloaded your photo stream to your PC.  What you may not know is that photo stream only keeps your photos for 30 days.  After that, they are deleted from photo stream but not from any device that already has them (such as your phone).  When you enabled photo stream on your PC you only had access to photos from the last 30 days since the others are no longer there, even though they remain on your phone.
To transfer these to your computer at this point you have two options:
Save them to the camera roll on your phone (by opening the my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  (You can only import photos to your computer from the Camera Roll album.)  Then import them to your computer as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083; or
Use an app like PhotoSync, which can wirelessly transfer photos from any album between your devices/computers, including the my photo stream album.
In the future, always import your photos from your camera roll to your computer via USB before deleting them.  Don't rely on photo stream or your iCloud backup to save your photos.

  • How do you save photos from import or Photo Stream to an album?

How do you save photos from import or photo stream to an album?  I have a MacBook Air (which keeps telling me my start-up disk is full) and I am trying to organize photos so there aren't duplicates and triples.  I have photos in events, last import, photos and albums....I feel like they are all taking up space.  If I move a photo from photo stream to an album, then delete the photo from photo steam its deleted from the album.  That doesn't make sense to me.  There should be a way to clean up photo stream, and events, and last import by putting photos into albums.  Even more bizarre; I imported photos from my 4S, and only a fraction of them transferred over.
I am completely lost.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    sarah

and I am trying to organize photos so there aren't duplicates and triples.  I have photos in events, last import, photos and albums....I feel like they are all taking up space.
    Sarah,
Only the photos you are seeing in the events and the Photo Stream will take up space. iPhoto stores each photo only one. After you import it, it will be assigned to one event.
Then you can use it in many albums and projects. Using the photo this way will only reference the one single copy of the photo in the event. The albums don't store the photos and do not require additional space. If you delete a photo from an event, it will be removed from all albums that have been using the this photos.
What you are seing are not actually duplicate photos but different ways to access the same photos.
The "Last event" is the same event as the last one you imported. It is there for a quick access to your recently imported photos.  Photos is a quick access to all photos in your library as an endless stream of photos. These are also no duplicates.
So if you want to save space and delete photos, do that by browsing your events. Deleting a photo from an event will delete the original image file and remove the photo from all albums, books, and other products. You have only duplicate photos, if you are seing the same photo twice in an event.
Even more bizarre; I imported photos from my 4S, and only a fraction of them transferred over.
That is a different problem, but it may be related to to fact that you need to free space.
If you get a warning, that the system needs space, don't do anything but update the backup of your mac and move files to an external disk to free space.
It is not save to keep working, when the system is running out of space.
How much free space do you have? Anything below 15GB free space is really critical.

  • How to stop Automatic import of photo stream photos?

Photos app is automatically importing every picture from photo stream. Even after deleting the photos in photo stream they are still showing up in the photos library. How do I stop auto import? There does not seem to be a way to stop this. It is saving every pic I take with my iPhone. I have to manually delete hundreds of photos I do not want .

On your Mac, how do you have the options in Photos > Preferences > iCloud set? Is either iCloud Photo Library or My Photo Stream checked?
On your iPhone, how do you have the options in Settings > iCloud > Photos set? Is either iCloud Photo Library or Upload to My Photo Stream set?
You will get the effect you mention if either both iCloud Photo Library options are set or both My Photo Stream options are set (or all four are set).

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The only thing i have done was empty my all image folder in finder under the search for triangle
By empty do you mean move to trash? Messing with the contents of the iPhoto LIbrary package using the Finder is tantamount to committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto.
Open the iPhoto Library package like this. and look inside the Originals folder and its subfolders to see if the full sized image files are still there. If so you'll be able to create a new library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
If there are no full sized files inside the Originals folder and you don't know where they are on the hard drive, i.e. you deleted them via the Finder, you'll need to use a file recovery program like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to recover those image files.
Please expand on exactly what you did using the search.
