Does aperture require a dedicated video card? If not a requirement? does it improve the performance of aperture?

Aperture can work with integrated video, but the consensus here is that Aperture is fairly demanding when it comes to graphics cards, as it relies on them for various processes. So, if you have the option to get a machine with a dedicated video chipset, do so.

  • Blue screen when attempting to use the dedicated video card

I keep getting a blue screen when attempting to use the dedicated video card.
I managed to install the AMD driver for it but without the other components like the Catalyst Control Center as it blue screened on startup when attempting to load the Catalyst Control Center.
The OS loads fine. Any applications that don't use the dedicated video card runs fine. All other drivers install fine as well.
Applications like games and Photoshop that switch to the dedicated video card on startup automatically crashes, the OS freezes then a blue screen appears.
What could be causing the problem? This problem just recently appeared. Two weeks ago.

This problem only appeared a few weeks ago. Before that, the same drivers from the HP site installed and functioned normally.
Could this be a problem with the graphics card itself?
Note sure but if we can know the system P/N others can look to see what drivers it has for the graphics to know what is there.

  • Satellite A660-149 - Does it have a 3D video card?

My notebook has been a surprise gift for me - day after day I'm now discovering its many wonderful features. A bit of a struggle though 'cos I'm far from being well versed in computing.
One thing I'm uncertain about is this: Is my NVidia GeForce a 3d video card? I 'd better be sure because a couple of the drivers Toshiba Tempro suggests I install come with the warning: *This driver is only for the model with the nVidia 3D video card*. Is anyone around who can confirm the Satellite A660-149 does have a 3d video card?

Thank you, folks, for helping me clarify my very hazy ideas on this subject. Then this screen with 1366x768 res/ and 60 hz refresh rate is for sure not up to reproducing 3d, but Xardas must be right in thinking the A660 may support 3D on an external monitor which would explain why the Toshiba utility advises on the installation of a 3d driver for the A660 series. Oh well, I won't bother with 3d one way or another, enough complications in life as it is at the moment. Cheers all. :)

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.

if it still gives that message, you need to take it to apple store or apple service provider to have a new card installed. the apple site gives listings of providers and stores in your area:

  • IBook G4 ---Does it have a 3D Video card?

    Hi
I am trying to figure out if my iBook meets the requirements to get a game called Railroad Tycoon 3. On the list of system requirements, it says 3D video card. I cannot find anything about a video card at all in the System Profiler. Does anyone know if the built in video card will be sufficient to run this game?
    Thanks!

    Hi Duane and Frozen Apple
I am happy to report that I did order the game and it arrived yesterday and I installed it today and all went well there and my 9 year old son is thrilled! He has been playing the game and is quite happy.
Thanks for the help on this issue!

  • TS140 dedicated video card recommendationd

    Hi there,
I bought the TS140 with the i3 and 4gb of RAM.
As it stands, it is a fantastic device with 8gb of RAM and 3 1TB HDD's.
It comes with the 280W power supply, which is on the lower end. Does anyone have some video cards they can recommend that will increase the graphics performance while not over exerting the power supply?
    Thanks in advance!

Your best bet would be the NVIDIA GTX-750ti  (most powerful card that runs on PCIe power only -- does not require any 6 pin graphics power cables pluged in) and has very good gaming performance.  Or else the AMD R7-250 which is quite a bit less powerful graphics wise than the NVIDIA but  has negligible current draw  That one would be the lowest thing usable for gaming.
Both of these are low wattage cards and should be no problem with 280 watts good luck.

  • System PSU requirements for new Video Card

I need to know if my system can support a new video card (fx5600 or radeon 9600 up) considering that I only have 300 watts psu. What voltage railing and how much current does these cards use? I cannot find any technical specs for these cards so I cannot compute for the power requirements my system will need if I change video cards.

Given a 300watts PSU, I would not placed my bets on either cards as the Fans don't really eats up the powers, it's the CPU + RAM + Mobo + VGA that are the main power consumers!!!
Considering a recommendation for you to go with the current PSU you have, most probably a GF4 MX440 will max out every supplement there.

  • Series of problems: Dedicated Video Cards turning ON AND OFF

Hi guys. It's been a long time. I'm back with yet some more problems.
After weeks of happiness with my wonderful computer (Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q706) I started finding some more issues with it. My laptop has three video cards as can be seen in this post: [Click ME].
One set is the integrated graphics card, an nVidia 9400M, and the other set consists of two dedicated nVidia 9800M GTX working in SLI.
What is the problem? At any given point the dedicated cards activate and deactivate continuously four or five times. This cycle can repeat itself two or up to four times a day.
Is that it? No. The set of cards are acticated&deactivated because the Windows Power Plans are being changed by an unkown agent. Whenever this thing starts it's because something is cycling through the power plans in an order I haven't bother to check but I know it goes through all three of them: Balanced, Power Saver and High Performance. I figured this out because while it was happening I had the Power Plan popup open and saw the radio buttons switching by themselves.
Is that it? No. When I wrote unkown agent, it wasn't so unkown. At one point I tried to run the Task Manager and keep a close eye on the list of processes running. Oh incredible is me. I found that for each time the power plan was changed, a process that went by "dllhost.exe" was causing the pain. See here:
At one point there were more than four of dllhosts. I looked it up and found that dllhost is a neutral Legit Microsoft file but can be manipulated to do "bad things". A few days later I still had the problem and checked the running processes with another program that replaces the task manager called "Free Extended Task Manager" by Extensoft. What surprised me was that when the thing was going on where there were supposed to be dllhosts therewere rundll32s instead. Should there still be rundll32 in Vista 64bit?
Sometimes, after the cycle is over, this error window will pop up:
I have no idea what it means. Sometimes it accompanies every turn the dedicated graphics set is trying to turn off. I suspect it pops up when the cards weren't able to shut down.
When I switch from the dedicated set back to the integrated card the fans won't shut down. Even after 12 hours they're still running at full speed and the air they're blowing out is practically cold.
That's all I gathered. I hope somebody can help out.

No, I am not saying it is bloatware.  Actually bloatware is anything that you don't need...
In this case I meant try that as a troubleshooting method.  If it is the case, then we can try reinstalling it.
You don't have to use the Tsohiba power management, or many other Toshiba software services.  It just comes down to if you need what those things do.  When they are working fine they don't seem to be CPU hogs so i usually leave them alone.  I did remove Toshiba power management on one laptop because it caused a problem and I was too lazy to do troubleshooting.  Also I was using the laptop as a desktop, always powered, so power management was not an issue.

  • Dedicated video card important for photo editing?

I am in the market for a new mbp, for photo editting (Lightroom, and photoshop occationally), debating between the 13" with an external monitor or 15".  I am sure the cpu power of the 13" should be enough.  What about the video card.  Is the integrated video card on the 13"s good enough?  I don;t play video games.
    Thanks!

I would actually be more concerned with the CPU power on the 13''. Though it will run CS6, the dual core processor will limit performance more than the integrated graphics. The integrated Iris on the 13'' is good enough, but processing speed may be an issue if you are doing heavy editing/ running concurrent processes. You may want to go with the baseline 15'' without the discrete GPU, with even better integrated graphics (Crystalwell), and, most importantly, with the quad core i7 configuration.
Comparison of the multicore 64bit benchmark test scores from Geeksquad show that CPU performance between the mid 2013 Air and Late 2013 13'' MB Pro are almost identical:
    Macbook Pro Retina (13'' Late 2013): 6206
    Macbook Air (13'' Mid 2013): 6140
    Compare with....

  • Cropping Crashes Aperture 3 due to Video Card Memory Leak?

Recently after updating from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 I have been experiencing crashing issues whenever I perform the cropping action.  I see the death of wheel following hitting the return key.  There was one time when the master version itself vaporized into thin air.  I also noticed from the iStat Menus that the issue only occurs when the ATI Radeon HD 2400 memory usage has reach its full capcity.  I quite firefox to release some of the memory then Aperture functions normally until the memory runs out again.  I would then see the death of wheel once again when I crop.
Is Aperture crashing because I need a more powerful video card or is it a memory leak issue with the application?
    Thanks!

What are the common factors between the old and new systems as far as Aperture goes? Not knowing how you migrated from the old to the new the only  thing we can say for certain is that the library is identical.
So have you run the basic library first aid steps? Another thing to try is to create a new empty library, put an image into it and try cropping it and see what happens.

I migrated everything from the old computer to the new.  I also tried creating a new library and the issue persists.  I've also tried the First Aid options all of 'Repair Permission, Repair Database, and Rebuild Database' none of which worked.  I've also tried reinstalling Aperture and it crashes on the first crop.

  • Aperture Dual monitors, what video card for AGP?

I am running two 20 inch apple monitors with the stock ATY 128 mb card. I am going to be upgrading the card soon because the system is so slow. I know that I am limited because this system can only use AGP cards.
What is the best AGP card available?
Also, will I notice a huge difference if I add even more ram?
    powermac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

That is probably enough RAM, if you aren't also running with Photoshop running all the time.
You should open Activity Monitor and keep an eye on the page outs under memory. If that number is growing rapidly, then you need more RAM. Otherwise, you don't.
The video card will make a very large difference -- if you can actually find it.

  • Video Card and DVD Burner required

    Hi,
We are in the process of trying to build a preliminary Sun Solaris 10 machine that if we get everything to work, we will start to build more units for our customers. We took a look at the Sun Solaris HCL list for parts and our resellers are having trouble finding some parts because they are out of date. We need to find technology that will be around for a while. For that reason we have decided on a Motherboard with Intel processor and PCI-E support instead of AGP. Trouble with PCI-E is the HCL list has limited options and were unable to find the parts online.
Can anyone recommend some recent PCI-E video cards?
Also can anyone recommend some recent CD/DVD-RW burners?
If this is not the place to ask these questions could you please let me know where to go?
    Thank you.

    Cornelia,
Lennart's links are very good and informative. But one thing you should know is that an external DVD burner will not play a DVD - it only burns them. Since you want to view the DVD and pause at a particular scene and print it, you'll need some way to view your DVD. You also need a way to convert the iMovie project with the imported VHS footage, to a burnable format. iDVD can do that, but I noticed you have OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). If you don't have iDVD you'll need to buy it from the Apple store.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70901/wo/u13Sbz1 DQJRc2kZnHbi1QKZybZA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3 or you can buy Roxio Toast 7, but toast is much more expensive. For Toast go to: http://www.roxio.com/
You also need a media player so you can view your final DVD. I did some quick research and found out that none of the free media players allows you to print - which is what you want to do. There are quite a few free media players available, like Nice player and Xine Player, but you need Panther or higher to use them. Because you're running OS X 10.2, the only free media player that you can use is VLC media player. To download a free VLC player go to: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ You do need QT 6.5.2. or higher. So you may need to update your QT.
You can't print a paused image, but you can take a snap shot of the still image, then print that. Snap Shot=CommandShift4. This will allow you to select the paused picture in the screen, or if you like just a portion of that paused picture. It will save on your desktop as a picture. Double click on the Picture, then print that.
Then it sounds like after you've burned the DVD with your titles, you will need to connect a VHS recorder to a DVD player and record your DVD on to VHS tape.
    Good Luck,
    JAM

  • Video card will not install properly

Hi, I have an HP Pavillion a6120n. I am trying to install a Radion HD 5450 video card (view links below for pc and video card). I have upgraded my psu to an Ultra LSP 750w and disabled the on-board graphics. However, no matter which way I try to install the video card (while running the pc or not) and rebooting, my monitor says "No Signal Detected". Furthermore, when I try to install the software for the video card from the CD, it goes through the entire install process and says that it is complete but the file never shows up in the folder that it is supposed to. Basically, whenever the new video card is attached to the motherboard, the PC doesn't like it and I get no display.
My BIOS version is 4/20/07. I can change the video setting to [PCI] or [On Board] but nothing more than that, like PCIE. Is there a new BIOS version that I haven't found?
Should I be looking at a different video card?  Is this one not compatable for some reason?
    Any ideas here? I'm stumped.

I dont see any reason why that card wont work.
Make sure the card is seated and the lock on the tail end of the card is engaged.
PCIe slots are sometimes a little tricky getting seated.
Also make sure it is not binding against the back plate on the computers chassis
where the ports come out the back. It sould seat comfortably.
