Does Aperture use custom Camera curves

Hi,
I'm wondering, I have setup a custom curve in my Nikon D2X for the level/contrast.
But it looks like Aperture does not read this information from the RAW file.
Does anybody know more about?

Backing Up Images - USING VAULT - Does Aperture Use Additional HD Space

I am using Aperture 1.5. My library contains about 500gb of Photos. It is saved to external hard drive 1. I would like to back up the data using Vault to external hard drive 2 (space available is 850GB). However, I receive a message stating there is NOT enough room to perform the back up.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone have a suggestion? I do not want to just drag and drop the library as its complicated to keep version controls.

Keith - I am having the same problem with Aperture 2.01 & Leopard. It appears that I must have more free space on my vault drive than the entire size of my aperture library file. Which, of course, seems silly since I have added 4gb to my 100gb aperture library since my last vault sync and my vault drive has 103gb of free space. In other words, my next vault sync should ideally only need 4+ gb to update the vault. I hope apple or someone can tell us what we are doing wrong or I hope they can fix that issue.

Problems using custom camera calibration in LR5

I'm on a mac I saved the dcp file to both locations and it doesn't show up under my LR5 Calibration drop down menu on the right side of the develop window.
HD>library>application support>adobe>camera raw>cameraProfiles
user>library>application support>adobe>camera raw>cameraProfiles

The profile will need to go into the User-centric path, where your version seems close but I’ll give another version of it just to make sure, because there isn’t supposed to be a space between Camera and Raw:
/Macintosh HD/Users/(Username)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/

If you can’t get things to work after making sure your path is right and that the permissions are enough for LR5 to be able to access this folder, can you provide your DCP file and a raw file from your camera that should be able to use that profile and I’ll try it on my Windows LR to see if the profile is found? A way to share such files would be to use dropbox.com or similar temporary large-file-hosting site and then post the public download link to the files.

Hi, how can I do batch correct raw images ? Does Aperture support custom DNG profiles (.dcp) from
X-Rite Colore Checker Passport or Adobe DNG Profile Editor ?
Or instead can I assign color correction icc camera profile (input ? device ?)
For example, I have already prepared jpg image with desired colors ang raw image, I want match colors raw to jpg image. I'm not interested in presets, I prefer and I can do it via profiling in other raw converters. But it will be Aperture usable for me ?

I don´t have the camera nor Lightroom, so just for what it´s worth, this requirement stated for DNG files:
+DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.+
Not sure if that helps you. I´m trying something alike from PSe7 on a Windows Vista laptop for the Panasonic LX3, without luck so far... ;(

Questions on preview quality and where Aperture uses them

I have been reading Apple's Aperture articles about preview quality and how Aperture shares images with the outside world. I had always assumed that the full quality image in Aperture was used for printing, exporting and sharing, but it seems that, at least for sharing, it is the preview that Aperture creates that is shared.
I have just increased the quality of the previews that Aperture generates from 5 to 9 and forced Aperture to re-render all previews. It seems to me that the images on screen and in slide shows and other iLife documents, are now much clearer and brighter (the downside of this is that my Aperture library file has grown by 4 gigabytes).
This leads me to ask four questions about Aperture and preview use (if I may?).
Is a jpeg on a high setting (9) visibly better than one on a medium setting (5), or am I being led to see what I expect to see?
Apart from editing, slideshows and iLife and iWork documents, in what situations does Aperture use previews where high or low quality might make a difference?
Does Aperture use previews to compile photo books? If so, does the quality of the preview affect the quality of the final printed book?
Is it possible to set Aperture to produce high quality previews for images above a certain star rating and low quality previews for the rest?

Previews are used within Aperture to quickly show an image in the main viewer before the master has been fully loaded, they are also used to see the referenced masters even if the external location is not available at that moment (not adjustments can be done then, but at least you can see the image)
Previews are used outside Aperture to share the images with adjustments without exporting every image. It comes in handy that you can drag an image from Aperture's browser to another app or the desktop (what you get there is the preview). iMovie or other iApps use previews, the bigger size and quality the better quality you'll get.
Once you set up the size and quality of the previews in Aperture's Preferences the previews are created with those settings. I guess you could lower the settings, in the browser select the images you don't need big previews, ctrl+click and 'update preview' to force create low res previews for those. After that you can put the settings back. But if you do any change to those images the previews will be updated. Certainly I don't see the point of having different previews, do some test find the settings that work best for you and keep it like that.
Turn automatic previews off and create manually the previews you need, I have a smart album with images rated 3 or more stars and I use it to select and create previews manually to those images.

Q: Custom camera profiles and process 2010 - incompatible?

I have two digital cameras that I've had modified to shoot in the infrared. I have to use custom camera profiles (created with the DNG profile editor) when I import IR images, otherwise the custom white balance is not preserved correctly. However, even though the Develop module shows that the process is 2010 for my IR images, the Detail and Contrast sliders under Noise Reduction are grayed out.
I read somewhere on the web that custom camera profiles used on import effectively negate the ability to use the new features in process 2010 - can anyone confirm this, or otherwise explain why I'm not able to use the Noise Reduction features of process 2010 in their entirety?

Is Aperture Useful with unsupported digital cameras like FujiFilm S100FS?

I have been evaluating and comparing Apple Aperture with Adobe Lightroom. For me, Aperture would be my preference if my camera was supported. Note that I already am using Photoshop CS5, but could use the supplemental organizing capabilityies of Aperture.
Apple does not support my camera's raw format (Fujifilm Finepix S100FS). To make matters worse, it does no good to convert the raw files to the standard DNG format because Apple does not even support that format for this camera. Apple states that some cameras are not supported in DNG because they have different types of sensor. And one of the reasons I purchased the Fujifilm camera is that it sports a larger sensor (to capture more light).
Aperture does support TIFF files, however. So I considered the idea of converting files to TIFF before importing them into Aperture. An interesting aspect of this is that TIFF files tend to be very very large.
For example, compare the following file sizes (for the same photo):
Camera Raw direct from the camera (16 bits per pixel): 23.7 MB
Converted to very high quality JPEG (8 bits): 7.9 MB
Converted to TIFF using Finepix software (16 bits) 133.3 MB
Converted to TIFF with Esif using Finepix S/W (8 bits) 66.7 MB
Converted to TIFF using Adobe Photoshop (8 bits) 33.2 MB
Converted to CNG using Adobe DNG Converter (16 bits) 31.9 MB
It appears that the best route may be to use the Photoshop conversion to TIFF. But I would be concerned that the reduction from 16 to 8 bits may limit my ability to do extensive editing without ending up with high pixelizing results. One can see that working with the camera raw image would provide greater flexibility and use less disk space - if only it was supported.
I like the features of Apple Aperture. But, I am not willing to pay the price associated with the lack of camera support. I think that Aperture would be an asset to me if it was not for this great shortcoming. I am not currently interested in Lightroom 2 since it is a couple of years old and does not support sound and movie files to the same extent as Aperture. I may be able to use the sound organizational capabilities of Aperture since music is also one of my hobbies.
Has anyone else run into this type of problem? Is there something that I am missing? Is Aperture at all useful for a person with a camera that is not supported by Apple?

I guess the answer is digital is new and there is a lot of fighting for the Top Spot.
The way i figured things out was like this.
Best tool to do the job is what i wanted. What works for me, because i don't want to work for a computer or a camera. (but i have to) When i started looking i found Apple were the ones who seemed to make something that came nearest to working for me and not the other way round.
Of course Aperture is still very useful as it is a mega powerful Organisation tool.
If i were in your position now i would think new camera. Aperture will still be around long after your camera and hopefully getting better along the way. The camera won't, thats for sure.
A possible short, half term solution if Apple intend to support it in the near future. Would be import pairs then discard the jpegs when raw is supported.

This has been an ongoing issue with this camera for a long time. Search the list here or Google the issue to see the many posts on this.
For whatever reason Aperture is unable to report that data. Some have written that it is because the that particular lens/camera combination does not report the f stop information.

You can try contacting apple customer service http://www.apple.com/contact but usually all app purchases are final and not refundable.

Does aperture do camera specific fixes?

My camera (Sony NEX6) requires a software to fix the distortion when shooting with the kit lens. It's usually done by the camera but if I'm shooting RAW then you have to get a software to do it. Sony supply this software that does the fixing but does Aperture have this feature built in? Is it not working for me because my camera is too new?

Use 16-bit TIFF and you'll be hard-pressed to _find_ anything missing. The disadvantages of 16-bit TIFF compared to RAW are:
- can be larger (many mfr's use a near-lossless RAW compression algorithm -- it removes data that the camera records but which the eye can't see)
- WB, white point, black point, and other parameters are "baked into" the file, resulting in a less "head-room" for adjustments.
I don't know the Sony software, but you might, as a starting workflow, go from camera to Sony's software, convert from RAW, set the above parameters, apply lens correction, export as 16-bit TIFF, and import into Aperture. You should keep your RAW files in case you want/need to go back to them, but in most cases having the corrected 16-bit TIFF as your Original in Aperture is likely to be more than usable.
I do something similar with a Sigma camera (DP2M). For me, the serpentine workaround adds enough encumbrance to outweigh whatever benefits the camera provides, so I end up dorking around in my full-frame truck when a sports car might win me more dates. Others feel otherwise .

One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line. Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory. Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive? Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad? Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips. Internet and WiFi are not available. Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad). I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC. I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips. Is this possible and how would I do it? I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

Thanks to Bobthefisherman & Turbostar. Turns out I've got a corrupted disk (which I found out via "verify disk" on Disk Utility First Aid. Previously, I never thought to verify disk -- only to repair permissions -- so I never knew my HD had been corrupted.
Wasn't able to do a clean install of OSX10.6 because my SuperDrive only sporadically will load discs, so I am taking it to the Apple Store to see if they can do a clean install, and depending upon costs, get the Superdrive replaced.
The HD wasn't partioned by the way. And I did have just over 40GB of contiguous space.

Does Aperture support the use of Filters or Brushes?

I want to be able to have more control over the final print versions of my photos using Aperture (instead of having to spend hundreds on the latest Photoshop)... Does Aperture support any type of filtering or brushwork? Any freeware out there that dovetails with Aperture?

And if you look in the .plist file you'll see preferences for "brushes" labeled Dodge, Burn, Saturate, Desaturate, Warmer and Cooler. Brushes also appear to have Size, Softness and Strength attributes - does this indicate future drawing pad support??!!
