I was thinking of upgrading to a new iPad, but I have an 32-gig 3rd gen. iTouch that I was thinking of selling. I was wondering if Apple bought used iTouches and gave you credit towards a new purchase? Or should I just sell it on Ebay or Gamestop and use the money to buy the new iPad?

I've seen A LOT of people purchasing a used iPod Touch 5th Gen and got screwed over because of some security protection and there's no way around it. I've been wanting to upgrade from the 4th Gen, but have been worry about.
What's the deal?

The deal is called Find My iPhone, it is a lock that permits ONLY the owner of a device to unlock or reset it. If a device gets stolen, this enables the owner to lock or track it.
If a device is legitimately sold, the original owner MUST deactivate Find My iPhone before passing it to the new buyer. You, as the buyer, must ensure that this has been done. Do not buy a device where you have no hope of a refund if you find the lock has not been reset - i.e., don't buy from a stranger off the street, from Craigslist, or any other method where you cannot physically check the device before you buy it, or if you cannot get a refund.

The used ipods direct from apple are, as far as I know, more or less originals with VERY SLIGHT (if ANY) wear on them. Usually just returns that they can't legally sell as new. I have a "refurbished" one, and to my eyes it came as new and clean as an original one would have.
As for the Google Maps, I haven't tested out completely, but it appears it works on a caching system. So, it will keep the directions for a little while, until other use of the ipod takes the directions out of memory. I think that's how it works. That said, I haven't tried it myself.

The iOS update us free so I would get the less expensive one.
If you are getting a used one make sure this is done before you purchase it. Otherwise it may still have the Activatin Lock on

I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago. I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam. I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.

Does anyone have any thoughts (positive or negative) about buying an iPod touch through a 3rd party retailer such as a Wal-Mart, Staples, Best Buy, etc?

I dont think there is to much of a difference except maybe a few days on return policy and the price may be a bit different depending on where you get it. I have owned 3 i-pods and have never bought any of them directly from apple. I have no problems with any of them. You will still have all the products features and your warranty from apple will still be exactly the same unless you purchase an extended warranty

I updated to iTunes 10.7 and now iTunes does not see my iPod Touch. It says the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver cannot be installed.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.

Not a 4G. Thats something I have never seen before. But then again, the thinner 4G wouldn't be able to sit still in the case of a bulky 2nd or 3rd gen. So if it isn't sliding and its in original packaging, I would trust it. No one would go through the trouble to spend money to make a mold to stick a knockoff in a case. I say its fine. How is it running?

No, you will need to go to a jewellers / trophy engraver to get your iPod engraved.
