Does Apple TV provide subtitles on movies streamed by Netflix?

I am DEAF and need subtitles or closed captions for the hearing impaired in order to watch movies -- or TV. These are two different things. Subtitles typically are options found on the Disc Menu: English, French, Spanish, etc. Some Disc Menus also provide for Closed Captions. However, some Discs provide Closed Caption Information embedded in the Disc that can be read by a TV and shown on screen when the TV's Closed Caption option is "On". Just what does Apple TV provide from streaming movies from iTunes or Netflix? Can I get subtitles? Can I get Closed Options?
I have a new Sony LCD Bravia TV that has both Closed Captions and Netflix buttons on the remote.
The Sony TV also can connect to my Wireless network in which I have an iMac 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 processor with OS 10.7.2.

I have had subtitles with Netflix without problems  for aover a year. . However, recently I am getting closed captions if I have the subtitle option turned ( CC turnrd off) on on the ATV2. I turn it off, and they are gone and regular subtitles  in a foreign film are there, no problem. Answer for this quirkiness?

  • Does Apple TV only rent certain movies, and make you buy others

Does Apple TV force you to buy certain movies?  We tried to rent Seven Pounds and cannot find a way around having to buy it.

No, actually, the iTunes store lists a great many movies, some of which are only for sale, and some of which are both for sale and for rent. I looked up Seven Pounds, and it is one that is only available for sale. I don't know why Apple does this, but it's been that way ever since I've been a customer with them for several years now.

  • Does apple tv support subtitles on itunes content

I can view the captioning on my macbook, but when I switch display to the apple tv the subtitles, and the option for displaying them disappears

While playing a movie on Apple TV, press and hold Play/Pause to access chapter selection, alternate audio and subtitle display. The display shows the options available for the current movie. You can access it from the main settings menu as well, you have to turn subtitles on.

  • Apple TV freezes during iTunes movie stream.

Since the last update of IOS in my Apple TV it`s not playing iTunes movies from my MacBook Air.
The movie frame freezes in my TV screen and it seems like it`s buffering the stream from my Mac. Does anyone has a solution?
    Thnaks

Do you mean pausing to rebuffer and then resuming by itself? Or does it stop playing entirely until you do something to restart it?
We didn't have any problems with Netflix rebuffering this evening. However, HD content seemed much more likely to "pixelate" while we were watching it than it ever has before. I updated our ATV2 to the latest firmware today before we starting watching Netflix this evening. Don't know if it's related or if it's just a coincidence.

  • Why does Apple not provide a proper AV for OSX?

I just found out that AVIRA AV was making my time machine backup non-working. During the troubleshooting i found a lot of support community posts that point to AV programms beside AVIRA (ESET for example) when it comes to time machine backup problems.
Apple should (like Microsoft does for a couple of years now) provide its own, properly integrated, AV solution.
Maybe partner up with one of the big vendors (Kaspersky or what ever) for definition updates.
And dont tell me MAC does not need AV. Read the news

    Hey,
Gatekeeper is meerly a Firewall which wont protect you from drive by fileformat exploits.
Regulating which software can be installed is also a good idea especially for people without much knowledge to prevent them from installing crap.
But as IOS and OSX market share will grow, they will be targeted more and more for common PC threats (exploits, drive by downloads, malware, botnets, viruses, etc....).
Just observe the Metasploit Exploit Database that is slowly beginning to integrate more and more OSX exploits.
AV like it is used on MS Windows might not be the perfect approach but just doing nothing about OS Security is even worse in my opinion...
ClamAV btw is next to useless if you look at MAC AV test reviews....
I am not trying to start a MAC does not need AV flamewar here
Maybe there are better AVs out there or there is more knowledge on Time Machine and AV problems out there...
    Update:
I dont mean Apple is doing nothing about OS Security. Sandboxing, ASLR and other mechanismens are something obviously. However Application/Fileformat exploits will always find exploitable bugs and Signature and Heuristic based AV are a viable option to adress those issues.

  • Why does apple doesnt provide a delivery report for text messages.?

    pplease provide one

Only Apple could answer that question and they are not here.
Submit your feedback requesting that feature directly to Apple using the appropriate link on the Feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
For what it's worth, the native messaging apps on every Android phone I've ever had don't provide it, either.

  • If your phone has been flashed to Boost mobile, does Apple still provide care or does that void out the warranty?

I have to leave the plan I am on so I thought about just switching carriers, but a friend suggested that I flash my phone to Boost mobile. However, I am not sure I want to do that because I am not 100% sure that I'd be able to walk into an Apple store and receive help.

Changing the carrier to which your iPhone is assigned, without the carrier's approval, is not only a violation of your contract with the carrier, which may have civil liability penalties, it also is an unauthorized modification of your iPhone, which voids any and all support from Apple, for anything related to your iPhone.

  • Does apple care provide general servicing

If i have the 3 year extended apple care warranty can I bring in my macbook to the apple store regularely to have it checked out and serviced?

No - but if you do encounter a problem, Apple will fix it for you. No 'general maintenance' though...

  • Why does apple not provide debit card facility for app store in India ?

Well it would be nicer to have debit card services in India for app store

The iTunes store in India accepts credit cards but not a debit card?
My debit card includes a Visa logo which can be used as with any Visa credit card and is also my ATM card for withdrawing cash from an ATM machine, and is accepted with the iTunes store in the U.S.

  • Export settings help size vs. quality, How does Apple do it?

Hello, Newbie to FCPX.  I have been using iMovie to import 1080i footage (and downconverting to 540) but now I moved up to FCPX.  I am still importing 1080i footage from my Canon HD camcorder and I created a 17 minute clip.  When I exported this via the Share --> AppleTV 1080 option it is about 1.3 gigs.  I've tried using compressor but the quality turns blocky and it's still a large file size.  I know there's a trade off to shrinking the file size but here is my question....
What settings does Apple use for their HD movies in iTunes?  They look fantastic and two hours is under 4 gigs at 1080p.  I can't seem to extract the same quality but again, I don't have a lot of experience.  I just have home movies of my daughter I shot in 1080 and would like to preserve as much of that quality as possible without chewing up disk space I don't need to because I don't know how.
Can someone offer some guidance?  Thanks!

  • Why does apple only support mp4 videos?

It's not really a problem, i usually use my friends computers to convert my videos since mine is so slow.
But why does apple only support MP4 and MOV formats? Why not MPEG or DivX?
I know they cannot use WMV because it is a Microsoft format.
It's just sometimes when i convert videos, the audio becomes out of sync or iTunes complains it's not playable on my iPod.
I would just like to know why?
    Thanks for your time.

If Apple chooses to go with H.264 or MP4 or whatever else they want to support, maybe it would be real nice if iTunes could automatically convert to those formats. So if I dropped my universally standard (and supported by most DVD players) DivX video clip in the library, iTunes would convert and format the video to an iPod friendly format.
So, let me see if I understand this correctly. You want Apple to pirate proprietary codecs from DivX and build them into iTunes QT access. Tell me, does this mean that Apple is working as your agent and you will be the one spending time behind bars or paying the fines. Or, are you saying that Apple should act as an agent for DivX and charge you for a version of iTunes with legal codecs installed. How about Windows Media? Want to double the cost? What about Real? Or maybe Apple should have different versions of iTunes -- one for you and one for the guy who lives next door who uses old Indeo files?
I have tried several 3rd party converters and they all suck.
Perhaps you should be more selective in choosing a converter or invest in a commercial product which is supported by the people selling it.

  • IPhone4 to Apple TV movie streaming problem

Movies recorded using my iPhone stream no problem to Apple TV via Airplay but movies that have been downloaded seperately and loaded onto my iPhone and are stored in my iPod part of the iPhone do not have the Airplay icon to allow streaming. Any ideas anyone? If my computer is on the same movies stream ok from there to the Apple TV but doesn't seem happy doing it for the one's saved on my phone.
    Many thanks

I am having the same problem, what are we doing wrong or is that yet another feature that is not supported by Apple

  • I downloaded some home movies onto my IMac but could not find a way to burn them to a DVD.  Does Apple have software to do this or do I need to purchase one.  If so, what is recommended.

I downloaded some home movies onto my IMac but could not find a way to burn them to a DVD.  Does Apple have software to do this or do I need to purchase one.  If so, what is recommended.

but could not find a way to burn them to a DVD.
Do you want to create a video DVD that will plan on a TV set via a DVD player or just burn the video files to a data DVD disk for storage?
If the former the read the following:
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
However, there are video DVD authoring apps that are available at the App Store that will create a video DVD disk.  They won't be as extensive as iDVD but can create a simple video DVD.
iDVD 7.1.2 is compatible with iDVD but we don't if it will be with the next system generation.

  • How do I configure the settings on my MBP and Apple TV so it will stream my Netflix movies from my MBP to the TV Screen?]

I bought a new Apple TV 3rd Gen.(which is currently updated) so I could stream the Netflix movies on my MacBook Pro Computer running Yosemite, onto my TV Screen. However, if I configure the settings on my Computer and Apple TV so that everything on my Desktop is displayed on the TV Screen, then Netflix can't even get the movie on my MBP open. It just keeps spinning until I get an error message about not being able to use Mirroring or Air Play if I want to stream my movie to the TV. So, when I switched the settings so that all mirroring and Air Play options were unchecked and selected all the streaming options using the internet. Then the Netflix movie would open up quick and easy, but there was nothing on the TV Screen.
I also was never able to Pair my Apple TV with my Bluetooth.(If they;re even supposed to be Paired, but something I read implied they should be Paired.f)  My MBP Bluetooth discovered the Apple TV immediately and issued a Pairing Number to enter in the Bluethooth's setting for the Apple TV, but the Apple TV Bluetooth just kept spinning. I don't know if that is part of the problem or not, since it wasn't mentioned in any documentation I read.
Also, when I was digging for information on the browser, going to Netflix Website and Apple TV's information at apple.com, I did come across a few links while searching the browser for any answers to my questions, that said I needed to Activate my Netflix Account for streaming by finding my Apple TVs activation code and then enter it on Netflix's site in my Netflix account.  And other's mentioned a registration code from my Apple TV needed to be entered to activate the "streaming" of Netflix movie content. And again, I've searched for hours and hours trying to find out where or how I could find the two codes, but never had any success. So, I have exhausted all avenues I can think of and with no luck, and I'm hoping my wonderful Apple Community can help me out or get me heading in the right direction.  Thanks, RVAF

There is a native Netflix app on Apple TV. If you are attempting to use a VPN via MBP then that is not supported.
