Does ATI 1900XTX Need Booster Cable?

I just got a Mac Pro. I wanted to get the best video card for gaming, so I ordered the Mac Pro with just the standard nVidia FX 4500 card, and bought an ATI Radeon X1900 XTX (slightly quicker than the XT) from Buy.com.
Now I'm ready to install the thing. We tried just swapping cards and rebooting, but the monitor stayed blank. The fan was running on the card.
We then restored the original nVidia card, and everything is fine. I'm reading the Mac Pro DYI instructions for swapping video cards, and it mentions a power booster cable. It shows one hooked up to an ATI Radeon card, I assume the optional X1900 XT.
* Do I need the power booster cable for my 1900 XTX?
* Where do I get one of these booster cables?
Many thanks for your help!
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes, the ATI card will need an extra power cable attached.
No, you can't use the ATI Radeon X1900XTX with the Mac Pro. That card is designed for a PC system. It does not have the necessary EFI chip that the Mac Pro requires.
There are only 3 cards that the Mac Pro will support at this time. They are the standard nVidia GeForce 7300 GT, ATI Radeon X1900XT and the nVidia Quadro FX 4500. Any card that you purchase that is not one of these (only available through Apple) will not work. Hopefully you can return it.
Hope this helps,
john

  • Need PCI-Express booster cable pinout/connector pin matching

Does anyone have an upgrade card for the mac pro, like a NVidia Quadro 4500 or the ATI 1900XT? I need the pinout for the booster cable that comes with those cards so i can connect my 7800GT to the motherboard to get the extra power.
If anyone could provide the pinout for the motherboard connector, showing which pins have the ground and which have the +12V connectors i would really appreciate it.
An alternate pinout would be which pins on the video card side match which pins on the motherboard, which would be also very useful, something like:
    video card motherboard

    |1|2|3| |1|2|3|
    |4|5|6| |4|5|6|

    Any help will be appreciated

    hey Renaud

and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?

  • Need ATI X1900 internal power cable

    Hi all,
A friend gave me an ATI X1900 video card but didn't have the internal power cable for the video card. I have a Nov. 2007 Mac Pro that already has an ATI X1900. I would like to add this "new" ATI X1900 as a secondary video card.
Where can I get the needed power cable? Is there any else I need to watch out for?
    Any info will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steven

High power cards, such as the ATI X199, should be used only in slots 1 or 2. Slots 3 and 4 are for low power cards.

  • "Expanding" questions...Booster cables...etc.

Hello...I have several questions. So I’m gonna start off with that em blond about the internal workings of the Mac Pro, however I would like to be a brunette and learn As this could be really simple and I’m just making it complicated OR it is complicated…lol where em sure it isn't.
I have had this 1st generation Mac Pro for a year now and I would like to upgrade and expand on her. One, I’d like to upgrade the RadeonX1900 graphics card to the GeForce 8800 GT…sound be simple enough, right? But to that I’d like to add ‘two’ GeForce 8800 GT. As I noticed there is only one booster cable that is attached to the existing RadeonX1900…where I assumed I’d need more then one booster cable for this, right?
On that note would I need many other additional booster cables if I’d like to add other cards like more USB and Firewire ports? If that is the case how can I obtain this booster cables that accommodate more then one to supply power to the card units?
Lastly, when I configured and bought the Mac Pro i did it without the Bluetooth feature and I’d like to add this now. How can I do this?
Any suggestion and or help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks, Bri

You can install two GeForce 8800 GT if you remove the Radeon X1900. Put them in slots 1 and 2. Each will come with an auxiliary power cable. There are two sockets on the mother board for those cables. See Firure 4 in
    <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pciimplementation.html>
Be sure to get the correct version of the GeForce 8800 GT
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB560Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjE0NTg5NA>
Using the Expansion Slot Utility (/System/Library/CoreServices/), set the PCI Express slots to:
    x8 x8 x1 x8 or x8 x8 x4 x4
Other PCI-e cards made for a Mac Pro shouldn't need any power cables. If you find one that does, look for a different one.

  • I have a macbook pro, a mini display port to hdmi cable to hook up to my tv (a toshiba 1080p flatscreen).  what do I do to actually get the image on the tv screen?  Do I need another cable for sound?

I am trying to watch a tv show that I purchased into I-tunes.  I have the cable and it hooks to the TV okay.  The TV shows the regular apple screen that looks like the universe screen - like when it boots up or is doing an upgrade on the OS.  I can't get the image to go from the laptop to the TV.  I tried under displays and it shows the TV as a display but I can't get the image on the TV.......Please help.

I need to know which MacBook Pro you have.  Only mid-2010  and later MBP's transmit sound through MiniDisplay Port to HDMI.  I have no information about the Mac Pro, so you might want to go to that Forum and ask there.

  • What is the best charging cable for the iPad Air (that is not made by Apple)? I need a long cable (over 6ft or more). I also need the cable to be of high quality and the cord part of the cable to be made of strong material.

What is the best charging cable for the iPad Air (that is not made by Apple)? I need a long cable (over 6ft or more). I also need the cable to be of high quality and the cord part of the cable to be made of strong material. Apple does not make one this long. Is there a cable out there that is sturdy like this and is safe to use?

yes, but I'm trying to use my iPad to type notes (using pages) and I have the smart case which I use as a stand. I need a cable long enough to fit through the back of my desk and the charging brick for the iPad won't fit behind the desk. I have to put it on the floor and then the apple cables aren't long enough to reach.

  • Time Capsule - need DSL cable?

Apart from the power cable to my Time Capsule, do I HAVE to use a DSL cable / internet cable to set up my Time Capsule? I have WiFi in the house, could I use that? After set up is the only cable required to back up data between my MacBook Pro and TC

I have a WiFI router which has 4 ethernet slots, so I can use the router via the ethernet cable for the internet source; does TC always need to be connected to the internet
The TC needs to be permanently connected to one of the Ethernet ports on the router.
and then the TC to my Macbook Pro is made from the TC to the Mac by WiFi?
The first, or "master" backup will copy over all of the data on your Mac to the TC, so that process will go 3-5 times faster than wireless, on average, if you use an Ethernet connection from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC for this first backup.
Once the first backup has been completed, then you can disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the TC and use wireless for subsequent backups, since you will only be backing up the changes that have occurred on your Mac since the last backup. This should only take a few minutes or so each hour.

  • No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?

I have just connected my AppleTV 2 with my Pioneer ELITE 910 HD Plasma TV system.  I have a hard wire ether net connected.  I have a great picture coming out of the HDMI connection from AppleTV plugged into my ELITE 910 HDMI Media Receiver.  But I am not hearing audio.  I have gone through the 'settings' menu on the AppleTV screen and have every setting correct (I believe)   It might appear that I may have to purchase an Optical Digital Audio Cable that would input into my Pioneer ELITE VSX-54TX receiver (that does have an Optical Digital Input that has not been used.)
Am I on the right track?  I was hoping the video AND audio would travel through the HDMI connection.   I don't want to spend money on the cable if I don't need it.

Re: No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?
Yes, audio and video should go via HDMI.
Do other peripherals work ok with the pioneer over HDMI.
My LG BlueRay player works fine.  My TIVO works fine -- good audio and video
AppleTV is a bit odd with audio at times.
Does the pioneer media box handle doilby digital and linear PCM?
I don't know what "linear PCM" is.  All the specs on this 2004 system are here:
    http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/pioneer-pro910hd.html
If you have Dolby Digital set to Auto I'd expect you to get some audio - if set to On and media box can't decode DD then you may get no sound.
Try cycling those settings as well as the one for audoo bit depth.
Have done all this.  Still no audio

A few days ago my sis plugged it into another computer but I don't know if she synched it to the other computer, and frankly, she won't remember. I have tried updating itunes, charging the ipod, restarting the ipod/computer, and the rest of what the apple site said to do. Ps I have the latest ipod touch
I need help stat! Please help!

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?

Should a family share an apple id, or does each phone need its own apple id?

    Hello coachscott,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

You shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people. Each person should have their own Apple ID.

  • Hi. My husband and I have always shared the same iTunes account.  Since installing iCloud, all our contacts and calenders have merged on our iPhone 4, which we do not want.  How do I rectify this? Does my husband need to set up his own apple ID?

Hi. My husband and I have always shared the same iTunes account.  Since installing iCloud, all our contacts and calenders have merged on our iPhone 4, which we do not want.  How do I rectify this? Does my husband need to set up his own apple ID?  If so, where do I need to change his email address info, so that his calender and contacts remain his?  Thank you

You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours.  If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for).  You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content.

  • Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia.

Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia. Can I start using itunes music match while I am travelling without the actual music files attached to my itunes?

In your situation I strongly recommend you read over that KB article. The international iTunes Stores are not cross-compatible.
My understanding of how it would work is that when activating iTunes Match on your US Store account, any songs you have in your iTunes Library that were purchased from the AUS Store account will NOT be matched. As I understand it, those files will be uploaded (which means you need the files on a local HDD). I also do not think it is possible to have iTunes Match active on more than one store ID on the same computer. But since iTunes Match is not available internationally yet, that point is moot for the moment.
To be honest you might want to wait until the service is available internationally so you can guage how will it will serve you.

Is it possible to hook a USB external hard drive to an iPad?.....the HD has video on it that I wanna watch on my iPad but don't wanna store it on iPad or iTunes....and way format does the video need to be in to watch on iPad?

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
    Another option:

My apologies, I read your post the wrong way. I see now that the original poster was confused about the specs and you were simply responding with the appropriate info.
I've gotten defensive after reading the forums. The forums are full of posters just looking to prove someone wrong or stupid, rather than being helpful. I shouldn't have assumed you were one of those people. Sorry.
I did my homework and discovered that my PowerPC will run Leopard. It can be purchased for $129 by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE. This is much cheaper than replacing my laptop.
I hope to upgrade my Mac soon, though! Can't believe this thing is still ticking. I love Apple.
