Does ATV act as a base station?

Greetings.
I was considering getting another airport base station extreme to augment a weak-ish signal to our second floor. The BS Extreme is $179US and the ATV is $229US.
So with a small price increase, I'd be gaining a whole lot more functionality.
But, I need to make sure: when the ATV is installed, does it act like a secondary base station for just going online for email/web?
Seems like the way to go if it does.
Thanks.
Jonathan

no the appletv is not a router/base station/access point.
it is simply a media playback device.

  • Macbook does not see airport extreme base station

    Hi
I set up my airport extreme several years ago.  I recently noticed that, under "security," the guest network says "WPA2 secured," but the main network says "none."  Is this a problem; i.e., does the main network lack security?  Further, when I open the airport utility, it cannot find a base station.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you!

Bob - Thanks so much for your quick reply. I followed your suggestions and, to go into perhaps unnecessary detail, I'll write what I did. I completely disconnected the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from my computer. I disabled Windows Firewall, uninstalled my anti-virus program, and uninstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, recycled by cable modem (took out the battery and unplugged it for about 20 seconds), then restarted my computer. After the computer booted up, I verified that windows firewall was disabled, reinstalled Airport Utility and Bonjour, then reconnected the cable connecting the AEBS to the computer (to one of the three ethernet ports, and I tried each of them in case one was faulty) but not to the cable modem as my firewall was disabled and had no anti-virus software. I also reconnected the AEBS power chord. I opened the newly reinstalled Airport Utility software and it did not find the base station. Only when I used "configure other" was I able to access the AEBS. I recycled the modem again, but that did not help. I turned on the firewall, installed anti-virus software, connected the AEBS to the modem, the light turned green, and I was able to access the internet on the primary computer and the wireless network gave me internet access on my laptops. But I was still not able to have my main computer, the one directly connected to the AEBS able to see it, and configure it, without utilizing "configure other."
Also, any idea why one of my laptops can only access the "guest" network? When it attempts to connect to the primary network it will stay on "acquiring network address" for what seems a few minutes, then switch to the "guest" network and connect immediately.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does AppleTV work as a base station or router?

Wondering if AppleTV works as a wireless router as well. Can't it be set up like a base station? Don't see the logic in spending $300 just to not have to wait for netflix movies lol.
    Thanks!

no the appletv cannot be used as any sort of network hub/router.

  • Airport Utility does not see Airport Extreme Base Station

Purchased Airport Extreme yesterday at Apple Store to replace old Netgear Router. Wanted wireless network to work with 2 identical HP Laptops running XP with SP3 and 2 iPod touches, and possible future purchases of iPad 2 and Apple TV. Installed Airport Utility software from CD on Dell Studio running Windows 7. Connected Airport Extreme to cable modem and Dell Studio. Ran Airport Utility software to configure Base Station but it did not recognize the Base Station. Base Station had blinking amber light. Did have internet connectivity on Dell Studio, and wireless internet connectivity on 2 iPod touches, and on one HP Laptop. No wireless internet on other HP Laptop. But wireless internet connection was unsecured and Airport Utility did not see Airport Extreme so could not configure it to make it secure. Contacted Apple Customer support. After 30-40 minutes of attempting several different possible fixes only able to use Airport Utility to configure Airport Extreme remotely, wirelessly, from one HP Laptop, not the Dell Studio that is directly connected to the base station. Now that the base station is configured the network is secure. However, second HP Laptop cannot connect to primary wireless network. I created password protected "Guest" network using Airport Utility, and laptop is able to connect to this Guest network. From reviewing forums am now able to configure Airport Extreme with Airport Utility by using "Configure other" on Dell computer. But utility cannot find device by scanning. Would like to find way to (1) have Airport Utility on Windows 7 Dell see Airport Extreme by scanning and not using "configure other," and (2) have 2nd HP Laptop connect to primary network and not "guest' network. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • IMac does not see Airport Extreme Base Station wirelessly

Trying to use my existing PC hooked up to Airport Extreme BS via ethernet cable, which works fine. I then open Airport Utility on my iMac and it scans for wireless devices but it can't see the AEBS (located beside it). Opening Base Station tab and there are no solid headers to click on, just the soft grey headers. I am fairly new to Apple product so if I've left any info out to further troubleshoot please let me know.
Eventually I would like to connect my Apple TV, located downstairs, wirelessly as well as use an Airport Express (wirelessly) to boost the signal if need be due to concrete walls and floors in construction of house.
I have OS X Version 10.5.8 (up to date), Intel, Airport Extreme Wireless Card.
Thanks for any help out there.

  • Windows 7 Does Not Recognize Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a Macbook Pro, a Windows XP PC, an Airport Extreme and an HP Printer hooked up via USB to the Airport. My XP system and My Macbook work fine. I have Windows 7 installed via bootcamp on the MacBok. It connects to the wireless network perfectly on the Windows 7 side but when I run the Airport Utility it is "unable to find any apple wireless devices." I want to set up the Windows 7 side to print and need to discover this network printer but since it won't even recognize the Airport device, I don't know how to proceed. Anyone know how to solve this problem? I have uninstalled and reinstalled software to no avail.
    Thanks,
    Thad

I have the exact same issue with a new airport extreme. One additional bit of info for me is that the windows computer does see the wireless network and is able to get online. It just doesn't find the airport in the airport utility app. Also, according to the guidebook I am supposed to install "Bonjour" on Windows computers. Can't find any reference to Bonjour on the installation disc that came with the Airport Extreme.

  • How do I make my new Airport Extreme a base station?

I have been using an Airport Extreme (5th generation) as my base station router for a few years. I set the main network for my and my wife's use and created a guest network for when my sons visited and needed to use the wi-fi connection. I used passwords for both networks. Today I purchased a new 802.11 ac Airport Extreme. I unplugged the 5h gen. Extreme and plugged in the new Extreme. After a short hunt, my new 27" (late 2013) iMac found the new Extreme and had me set up a name and a password for it using Airport Utility. I was expecting it to ask if I wanted to set up a guest network, but it did not. I was expecting it to ask since I believe that is what happened when I installed my 5th gen Extreme a few years ago. For the 5th gen Extreme, I had to enter a password to protect settings on the Extreme, a WPA2 password for my main network and another password for my guest network. It took about 10 minutes to set up. For this new Airport Extreme I entered just one password. It took about 2 to 3 minutes for the entire setup. When I checked the menu in the Airport Utility under "Base Station", all lines are grayed out. Under the File Menu in Airport Utility, "Configure Other" is available, but "Import Configuration file" and "Export Configuration file" are also grayed out. I checked Network Settings in System Preferences and I see my new network name in the Wi-Fi menu and under the "Advanced..." button, I see the old and new Networks listed in the "Preferred networks" box.
So, how do I get the new Airport Extreme to act as the Base station and be able to enter a guest network? Does it require me to delete the old Network name from the Advanced... button page in System Preferences > Network Settings? Will I just have to start all over with the new Extreme to make it a base station?

    Hello Leo,
I'm not at home so can't confirm but I can only assume that maybe some of the "old" settings in airport utility have changed, and simplified.  Hence why you probably only need one password.
When I bought the new "tower" like AirPort Extreme, I just plugged it into the Ethernet, powered it on with the previous generation Extreme in place and in Airport Utility it just asked me if I wanted to copy the settings to the newer device, which included a few "port forwarding" settings.  All done in this sequence.  I didn't have guest network set up but you can still set up guest network under wireless in Airport Utility, hope this helps!

  • Using iMac as base station

First, forgive me as I new to Apple (former PC).
I have the new iMac 27" i7 and was told that it has a built-in Airport Extreme. I just purchase an Airport Express and can't figure out how to get the AirPort Utility to recognize my iMac as the Base Station.
I have DSL (through ATT) hardwired from the DSL modem to my iMac. I would like to use the AirPort Express as a bridge so I can connect my Directv HD-DVR to the network, wirelessly.
I've heard that this is possible but I just can't get this to work.
    Thanks

MrMetrx, Welcome to the discussion area!
I would not recommend doing this. You will get much better control and flexibility by using any inexpensive wireless router.
If you want your Mac to act as a base station, you need to go to System Preferences-> Sharing preference pane and enable Internet sharing to AirPort.

  • Silly Base Station / Express question

Hi. Silly Question... Is my Airport Express my Base Station? I've only got the Express and I can connect to the internet just fine. Or does Base Station refer specifically to the round flying-saucer looking thingy? That would explain why I can't see it listed in Airport Setup utility under the Base Station columns. I'm trying to make sure my Express is set up correctly to print, but I didn't specify having a printer when I set up the Wireless Network. Sorry about this, but it might just solve my problem. Thanks in advance. I promise I'll learn quickly.

    Ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I'm not sure if it's a defective AX... just from my personal experience I had similar issues with 3 I needed to return.
If I recall correctly, you only have 2 choices... either the AX acts as a base station or it's a client of another base station. I suppose it might be possible you had it set as a client and it's just picking up an open access point nearby.
I would just try restarting the AX and your computer. If that doesn't work, maybe you could try a soft -> hard -> factory reset, in that order.
Do you have an Apple Store nearby? If so, and none of the above works, you can always take it to the genius bar and they may be able to help.

  • Extreme base station 802.11g Mystery

Been trying to wrap my head around this for the past week.
Girlfriend unplugged our perfectly working Airport express from wall outlet by mistake. She plugs it back in but no connection is detected by our two ibook G4s (both running leopard). After trying all three different resets and researching around on the internet I chalk it up to a faulty Airport Express. Head to my local mac store and purchase a lightly used Extreme base station. Set it up and it TOO is undetected by my laptop.
Stranger yet, I can see all my neighbors access points from my two ibooks but I cannot see the airport extreme. My ancient G3 clamshell was fired up and it CAN detect this extreme base station and connect to it no problems. Same goes for my iphone.
So this gets me to thinking. THis is a software conflict, no? I get the feeling I might have done a software update right before this whole fiasco but I'm not certain. I try downgrading firmware for base station but no joy.
Also, this might be a strange tangent but I live in Japan where the Airport express and extreme are rebranded to Airmac express and Airmac extreme. "So what", you say? It just so happens that my two ibooks (the computers that can't see the wifi network) are north american spec computers. My iPhone and G3 Clamashell are both japanese and can see/connect to the base station.
Does anyone know if wifi base stations in Japan have compatibility issues with non japanese computers? I mean, I understand the hardware should be the same, but perhaps software is different for the two?
If anyone has the slightest idea or some helpful advice please please please. I'm just about to do a clean install of leopard but something tells me that's not the culprit since BOTH of my computers are having this problem it must be some strange setting somewhere. BTW, both computers where networked together as to share files on this once working wifi connection.

    Duane,
The drinks are on me if you ever find your way to Japan!
Changed the Base Station channel to 11 and it worked like a charm.
I didn't even think about this since the channel was set to automatic. I assumed (wrongly) that it would find the best suitable channel. But as you stated, US spec uses channels 1-11 while here in japan I had the option of channel 12 and 13. Thank you.
Btw, Nice clammy pic you got there.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station dropouts at 5 GHz

I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and a new Airport express to replace the two Airport Express 802.11g boxes. We have 100 Mbit fiber optic to the home services and it felt like a waste of money to have a network that couldn't keep up with our connection. I have the Airport Extreme acting as a base station dedicated to running at 5 GHz (to avoid I hoped interference from the microwave) and I have the Airport Express working as an extension to the network allowing our 802.11g limited early 2006 iMac to use the new 802.11n network via its hardwired ethernet port. The problem I am having is that the Airport Express drops the connection and is unavailable from the list of available networks for a period of time. If I power down/up the Airport Express all is well and if I wait the network comes back by itself as well. I have no idea what is causing this. The network signal is about 40% according to AirRadar and certainly works beautifully before it drops out with no advanced warning. Has anyone else seen this -- or even better has anyone else seen this and have an idea of what to do to fix it?

The range on 5ghz may be longer if you have no barriers. However, the 5ghz will be affected more by walls and objects. In general, 5ghz doesn't work for me in my house.

  • Airport Base Station-Do g devices slow it down?  Parental controls

I need to purchase a new Wi-Fi router and am looking at several but am looking at the Airport Base Station.
Most of my devices such as my Mac's all use N networking but other devices such as my Xbox 360 use g networking. When doing research on the Airport Base Station I read that when you connect G devices to the Airport Base Station it will slow down the entire network to G speed so that all your N devices really only get G speed.
Is this still an issue? Does the newer version of the Airport Base Station still do this? Has there been a firmware or hardware upgrade that solves this issue?
Also, when it comes to parental controls, does the AEBS have good parental controls? What I'm most interested in is being able to block specific websites such as Facebook so that all devices connected to the network would not be able to access Facebook. When I read up on the AEBS it appears to have some parental controls but you can't block specific websites. Is this true?
Another router I'm looking at is the Cisco Linksys E2000. A friend of mine has a E1000 and loves it. When doing research I became interested in the E2000 since it has gigabit ports.
Would g devices slow down all n devices connected to it though? What I'm wondering is if the issue with g devices is related to the AEBS or all n routers. What I like it is seems the E1000/E2000 has great parental controls for website blocking.
    Thank you for your help.

The AirPorts have no parental control capability so your choices are really down to the Cisco products.
As far as whether a "g" device will slow down an "n" device on a compatible network, it's all pretty much relative. If the "g" device is an iPhone, and the iPhone is connected to the network, I see no slowdown at all on the connection to my "n" Mac.
If I'm downloading something to the iPhone, the Mac may slow just a bit...maybe 10-15% during the iPhone download...but it does not drop down to "g" level wireless at any time.

  • Windows XP lost connection to airport extreme base station

I had a perfect connection after setting up my Airport Extreme with my Mac Book Pro and my HP laptop and one HP desktop then when trying repair media center. I did install the airport utility in XP but when trying to scan it cannot pick up my base station. It worked perfect before now I am at a hold and I don't know what direction to take.
    Some questions.
How do I find the IP address on my Airport?
Do I need to create a new wireless network since the airport utility does not pick up the base station?
When I search available networks on the PC why doesn't mine show up?
Can someone point out the steps to take to get this crappy PC back on the internet, oh by the way it's my wife's and now she's on mine and I need to get her back on hers ASAP!
Thanks I appreciate your time to help out!

    >How do I find the IP address on my Airport?
The default LAN-side IP address of the AirPort/Time Capsule is: 10.0.1.1.
    >Do I need to create a new wireless network since the airport utility does not pick up the base station?
You shouldn't have to. Assuming that the base station is still providing a wireless network, you should be able to access it with the AirPort Utility. To do so, run the utility, and then, select File > Configure Other ... from the utility's menu bar. Enter 10.0.1.1 in the Address window and the Base Station Password in the Password window. If you did not change the Base Station Passwork, the default is "public."
If you are still unable to access the base station via the utility, then try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable between the computer and the base station ... and then, try accessing it again.

  • Is Snow base station (M8440, dual ethernet) capable of WPA2 ??

Am about to buy an Airport base station (snow/M8440) off eBay. Does anyone know if this base station is capable of WPA or WPA2? I will be using it with a Titanium G4 867mhz and 10.4.9.
I probably won't buy it if it is only capable of WEP. Thanks.

No, the snow AirPort base station (ABS) is not capable of WPA nor WPA2.
The snow ABS only does 64 and 128 bit WEP.
