Does Battery Charge While iPhone is Off?

I noticed when going to charge my iPhone for the night I turn it off completely - then plug it in to the cradle plugged in to the wall. It immediately turns back on and begins charging. So...
1. Does it have to be on while charging? For instance, you can turn it off while still plugged in to the cradle and it does shut off. But is it charging while in this state?
2. Why does it turn back on once plugged in to the dock?
It would seem to me that the fact that it turns back on indicates it needs to be powered up to charge properly?
Any ideas? THANKS

NO! I plug mine in and THEN turn it off.
2. Why does it turn back on once plugged in to the

It has to do with the 30 pin connector! An iPod does the same thing!

Logical conclusion! But incorrect

  • Battery drained while iphone was off

I have an iphone 3gs, and I was uploading a video to youtube and had around 80% battery life after I was done, I saw the phone auto-lock due to the 1 minute auto lock feature.
I come back after 1-2 hours and the phone was pretty hot and was unable to turn on. I had to hold the power and home button to force it to turn on and I saw that battery life red at 17%. I only had the phone for around 2 weeks,
    anyone know why this happened?
    thanks

it's only off when you hold the power key for a few seconds and then slide to power off...
programs are running when its in sleep mode... the phone function is always running as are any apps you have open before popping it into sleep...
this is the design and it does come in handy... for example when listening to streaming radio, pandora, or if you have skype running in the background
since you have the video camera running when it sleeps it keeps running after the upload is complete.
now as for why the camera eats so much battery... that is a good question... perhaps they didn't have time to optimize the code... perhaps they could add a check in the loop to see if the phone is sleeping and if it is they could have it not worry about the camera function...
    be well!

  • IPhone loses battery charge while connected to MacBook! Is this NORMAL?

Just as an example, I connected the iPhone to my MacBook this evening; it had about 60% charge, according to the green/black "thermometer." Then, I did some other stuff, and when I checked the thermometer again, it was down to about 20%! It seems like the phone is discharging into the USB power port? The only successful way I have of fully charging my iPhone is through the supplied charger. I can only connect to the MacBook for syncing, then better get off before I lose charge! Am I the only one who is seeing this?

Hmm. Let me ask this: when the iPhone is in the dock and the dock is connected to the (awake) MacBook, does iPhone think it's getting power? That is, does the tiny battery icon at the top right have either a lightning bolt or a plug symbol? If it doesn't, then remove the dock and plug the cable directly into the iPhone to see if that helps. It may be that your dock is passing data (which we know because you can sync), but not power.

  • Battery does not charge while plugged in

My computer is plugged into the charger and does not lose power while plugged in, however, it does not charge either. It currently sits at 63% power and says "Battery is not charging" when I mouse over the battery icon and verifies that it is plugged into the power adapter. Basically the problem is that it doesn't lose power when its charged in, but the battery isn't recharging either. The light on the charger isn't lighting up either, however, I've verified that its the computer's problem by plugging my charger into my roommates identical laptop. Any idea what the issue is? Thanks everyone.

I also have this problem with my Mid-2007 MBP.
I have reset the SMC to no avail.
I've noticed that if my battery appears to be charging (albeit slowly) and then I try to play World of Warcraft, it switches to "Not Charging" once the fans startup.
I just had it serviced and they replaced the logic board 1 wk ago and then I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Could any of this have an effect?

  • Battery dies while computer is off

My Powerbook is 3 years old at this point, and I do my best to conserve the battery. Lately, my battery has been draining while my computer has been off! I will use it for about 20 minutes before class and shut it down completely; when I go to use it again, its dead. WHATS THE DEAL?
Also, my battery compartment cover keeps falling off! The battery stays secure, but the cover does not. I refuse to tape my computer... any suggestions?
    Please help!
    12in Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It's time for a new battery. Three years is longer than most batteries last. If you want, go to system profile and click under battery. Do this when fully charged. Look for the difference between the original charge capacity and current charge capacity. Also look at the number of cycles you've had. If the difference between original and current capacities is very large or the number of cycles is high, you will certainly need a new battery.

  • Why can't you charge while device is off?

Every electronic device I have owned, whether it is a dumb phone, portable radio, or smartphone with the exception of Apple allows you to charge your device when it is turned off. Yet, with Apple, you have to charge it while it is on.  When I charge it overnight, it is completed within a few hours but it is still on (sleeping). This is causing the battery to drain even more than when off.
While it is true that batteries will lose their charge no matter what, wouldn't it make more sense to allow to charge the phone while off, like all other devices made so when you turn on the phone, the device has the most possible battery charge unlike the way it is now.

    @Meg St._ClairThe device....it won't charge using your method.
And yes, the battery is draining, why wouldnt it? The device is on.
As an experiment, try this: have your battery almost completely dead. Use your method. Then check back in a day or two. Let us know your findings. You will see that the iphone is not charged.

  • Incredible Battery Drain While Phone is OFF

I'm on my third Sprint Pre right now and thought I finally found some rock-solid hardware.  Sadly, there's this strange problem affecting the battery of my phone.  When the phone is on, the battery operates like normal.  When I turn the phone off at night, I get the low battery symbol the next morning... it's draining like crazy (I've turned it off with close to a full charge too).
To give you a comparison, while the phone was on and in standby for five or so hours, the battery merely dropped 2% or so.  While off for less than an hour, I had a battery drain of ~10%!
So I ran a little test.  I shut off the phone and then replaced the battery.  No problems the next morning.  Thought the problem was resolved.  Turned the phone off the next night and the following morning I'm greeted with the low battery signal again.
My theory (I think it's the only plausible one) is that the phone is not shutting off completely and something continues to run therefore draining my battery.  Hence removing the battery while it's "off" and then placing it back in completely turned the phone off resulting in no battery drainage.
Is there a solution to this problem without resorting to another exchange (I highly doubt it)?  Doctoring didn't help by the way.  Each refurbed unit I got fixed one problem and added others.  Aside from this battery problem and some minor light leakage, this unit is quite solid.  I love webOS, but the shoddy refurb quality is giving me a headache...
    -UPDATE-
Strangely enough, both batteries I tested were defective.  What are the odds?  Sprint replaced the battery and now all is well.

My theory (I think it's the only plausible one) is that the phone is not shutting off completely and something continues to run therefore draining my battery.  Hence removing the battery while it's "off" and then placing it back in completely turned the phone off resulting in no battery drainage.
My battery was driving draining too which was really annoying.  I use it extensively to make Long Distance business calls and it would die after 20 minutes or so.  I didn't try taking it out when the phone was off but I did get a free replacement so I think there must have been a batch of defective batteries. london

  • Battery draining while phone is off???

Why does my droid charge battery go dead when the phone is off?  At first I thought I just forgot to turn it off but it happens way too often?  It had a half battery charge last night when I went to bed and I turned it off and this morning it was so dead I couldn't even turn it on.  And it happens when I am at work too.  Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?  Is this normal or is there something wrong with my phone?  I really like my phone otherwise!  Thanks for any input!

Try this.  Touch settings>applications>battery use to see which application is using the MOST battery power.  If it is something like the Display or Android OS you cannot stop those APPS.  If it's Cell StandBy you may be in a WEAK signal area where the phone keeps trying to connect so you may have to put your phone in Airplane Mode or keep it plugged in.  If it's an APP just stuck on (did not stop) after you used it see the next two fixes.
If it's a "stuck on" APP touch settings>applications>Running Services and find that APP and STOP it.  This is the most powerful way to stop an APP.
Another less powerful way is when you're at the home page touch Task Manager>Active Applications>Exit All.

  • Battery discharging while phone is off

My htc incredible 2 is losing charge while my phone is off. i charged it completely yesterday, then turned it off, now 12 hours later it wont turn on until i plug it in the pc to charge. and when turned on the battery is almost completely dead.....Any ideas?

I have to respectfully disagree with you about the Advanced Task Killer. Everytime you are killing an application, it will just cause the application to respawn themselves.
    Try this application instead.

  • Random drop in battery charge while using plugged-in computer

    Hey everyone,
I bought my Macbook Pro a couple weeks ago and have generally used it while it is plugged in. Recently I've noticed that while I am using it, the battery charge will suddenly drop from 100% to around 50-60% and the MagSafe adapter will change from green to amber and begin charging the battery until it reaches 100% again. I calibrated the battery the day that I got it and I have never had a problem like this until now. CoconutBattery even says that my battery capacity is more than 100% of what it should be. Please let me know if this is something I should worry about!

I just noticed it happening again.
    very strange.
    AC Adapter connected and green
icon in menu bar shows AC is connected, not charging.
system profiler shows -1900 to -2500 mA
system profiler shows Fully Charged: No
    system profiler shows Charging: No
I am starting to suspect it's related to the ipad being connected, as that takes a good chunk of power to charge.
I wonder if what's happening is that that with everything powered up on the macbook (External display, external Firewire hard drive, USB keyboard, Screen lit up, iPad connected) if it's somehow exceeding the capacity of the magsafe 85W power supply.
    to test this out,
I've disconnected the ipad, firewire hard drive, and second display,
done a SMB and PRAM reset
and am charging the battery now.
after that I'll do a calibrate and try to avoid connecting things for the next few days to see what happens.

  • Car Charging while engine is off?

    Hi All,
I have an iPod classic 30GB and have it permanantly attached to a Kenwood BT-5026 head unit it my car using the Kenwood iPod connection kit.
My issue comes as the kit only charges the iPod when the engine is on, this means that I have to wait ages for the iPod to get enough battery to be able to play when I get in the car and usually means I never get to listen to it on short journeys.
I am trying to find a way to have something like a through port charger that will permanantly charge the unit from a permanent live in the car such as my cigarette lighter but let the iPod kit still be connected. This is just an idea but all suggestions on how to achieve the end result are apprechiated!
The end result needs to be that the iPod is permanantly being charged and the kit can access the iPod, both with interaction from me as I will forget to change it around if I need to do something and I'll still be left with the same problem.
    Thanks!!
    Scott

One way is to get a 10kmAh Powerbank or bigger, (thats about the size of 2 iPods stack together), that you can charge your iPod, in your bag, most people use this to charge their iPhones and iPads. Then recharge your Powerbank on the wall charger or PC USB port.
Just curious, why cant you charge your iPod directly, when you go to bed and not using it in the car?
A lot of iPods get stolen from cars, so I agree with CHG, dont leave it in the car all the time, the theives will smash your $1000 windscreen for your $300 iPod, and leave you without a drive for 1 week.
    Have a nice day!

  • Why is it that my ipad 3rd gen does not charge while connected to my laptop

my ipad 3rd gen will not charge while connected to my laptop, just beside the battery meter it states not charging.

Beacause the USB port of most computers don't supply sufficient current to properly charge it. It is best to charge it using the supplied power supply.

  • Suggestion: Change color of battery-charging while syncing

We're all familiar with the cool green-glowing battery when our iPhone is plugged into our computer.
I think that the green glow should turn red when the phone is actually synchronizing with iTunes. A little reminder that, no, we shouldn't just swipe the slider and and start using it... or unplug it and walk away.
I know that Apple reads these boards... so this suggestion is now in the public domain, and they can use it with no compensation. I just want it done!

  • My iPhone does not charge while I put it in charge. But when I remove charger it says that put your phone in charge. What should I do?

    Hi,
my problem with IPhone 5s is, when I put it in charge it doesn't charge and when I remove charger it says that plug in the charger. In this case what should I do?

    Hi Khushboo patel,
If you are having charging issues with your iPhone, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge until your device turns on. This could take between 10 and 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue persists, please contact Apple Support.
