Does battery drain during sleep mode?

I've had my MacBook Pro now only about a week.  Just wondering about when not using...if its best to completely power off (though then it may get turned on...turned off once or twice later throughout the day)  ...or leave the power adaptor on it and put the laptop in sleep mode?  Or...what happens when in sleep mode and say the power adaptor is not attached.  Does the computer drain the battery much while in sleepmode?
thanks...

It's fine to leave it plugged in for normal use. That's what I do, and I suspect many people do as well.
Having said that, Apple does recommend using the battery occasionally:

  • MB Battery drain during sleep

I have a MacBook IntelDuo (not 2) that I just purchased in October.
I noticed that the battery still drains during sleep. If I put the computer to sleep for 4 hours, it drops by about 15% - 20%.
I had a iBook (white g3 500mhz) and I could put it to sleep for days without the battery barely draining at all.... espeically in OS9 (over a week unplugged and asleep and had 25% battery left). Once I switched to OSX the battery drained a bit faster.
Drain is expected, but this seems like a much bigger drain than older systems. What could still be running when it's asleep?

When you put it to sleep, do you notice a steady white light? If so, then only your display is sleeping.
You can change sleep settings in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
Your battery will drain if only your display is sleeping. Your computer is still on if you see the light.

  • Battery drained during sleep

My new 13'' MBA seems to use quite some battery power during sleep -much more than I experienced with my 15''MBP.
I am used to never shutting down my Macbooks, but simply close the lid to put it to sleep. Usually, I find the battery to be less than I left, but today I found the battery to be fully drained.
Am I missing something with the power settings? Doesn't the 30 day stand by time refer to "shutting down the lid" and preserving battery life for days?

    Hi
Have you applied the Firmware update? If so, try resetting the PRAM.

  • Severe battery loss during sleep mode

I have a brand new MBAir and I'm trully intrigued about the loss of batery happening during sleep mode. I've fully charged it on Friday, and, since then it's been on sleep mode. Today, finally turnign it on this night to work a bit, I found it has only 73% of charge! What can be happening? IMPORTANT: My "power nap" mode is OFF since I've bought it and started using and noticing this down charge. Can anyone help me?

I've just solved it all when I noticed I kept plugged in my wireless mouse receptor. Just plug it out before leaving the MBA in sleep mode, and the problem was solved.

  • Battery drains during sleep!

My almost 2 year old battery for my 15" PB G4 keeps losing its' charge when sleeping. After fully charging, I put it to sleep by closing the lid (and confirming the flashing LED).
A few hours later when on the train, it won't wake up, until I get home and plug it in, only to realize that the battery had drained.
    Here's my coconut:
    Current battery charge 1168
    Max battery charge 3089
    Current battery cap 3089 (70%)
    Original battery cap 4400
    cycles 191

Any suggestions? Do I need a new battery?
    Thanks.

I realize this is an older thread, but I was searching around the forum on this topic because I've been finding that one of my PowerBook batteries has been draining quickly during sleep (on planes, not trains!). I thought you might find my situation similar and informative.
On a more recent thread, I found a couple of suggestions that have led me to believe that my "problem battery" is just plain old. I've looked at the battery info in the System Profiler (under Hardware > Power), and confirmed that fully charged, my battery's capacity is a meager 877 mAh (19% of the original 4400) and it's been through 169 cycles. It's a battery I bought with the PowerBook, so it's over two years old.
Considering the massive drop in capacity, I think it's time for a new battery...

  • 8520 : Battery draining in sleep mode/turned off

    Hi Guys,
    Happy new year!
I am now confused with what happened to my Blackberry device. Here is the problem. I charge the blackberrry battery up to 50%, then I unplug the charger then I turn it off. When I sleep, the battery drains so fast, I don't know what's happening, then my battery completely low, so I can't turn on the device.
Here I attach you 2 screenshots, hopefully it will helps you to understand.
    Thank you.

Did the battery drain previously? Have you installed any new applications? Try removing your battery and reinserting it after 30 minutes, or backup the stuff you need and completely wiping your phone. As a last resort you might have to buy a new battery, unless its a problem with the phone.

At 4% per hour the battery will last 25 hours. I don't see anything wrong with that.

  • MBP A1278 Battery Drain during sleep

So I've been having issues with my Mid 2010 MBP A1278.  I always charge it to 100%, but quickly overnight it drains and in a couple days goes to zero without using it at all.  Does anyone have any tips?  Right now I'm using OS X 10.8.5, but upgading to Mavericks in the next day or two. Below is the notes I made about when I opened and closed the laptops with battery percentages. Is this normal?
    8:12 PM 99% Wednesday
    Then closed lid
7:04 AM 88% Thursday Morning - checked battery for 1 minute
    Then closed lid
9:40 PM 50% Friday Night - checked battery for 1 minute
    Then closed lid
7:46 AM 40% Saturday Morning - started working with WiFi connectivity
    8:19 AM 29% Saturday Morning
    then closed lid

Not much. Mine goes down maybe 1-2% overnight, if anything.

  • Battery Drain During Sleep

100% battery life when I unplugged my laptop and brought it to work this morning. 5 hours later I pull it out of my backpack and I have 88% battery life. Why?? Reading on here about hard drives not sleeping. Is that the problem?
I've never been thrilled with the battery life (it's a 10/2008 MBP 15") Two weekends ago I didn't use it at all or plug it in. When I opened it, it had put itself in that save/sleep state where it had to "restore" where i last was. In the grayed out screen I could see 78% battery which would have been what it was the last time I had it open. So really? not even opening it for two or three days and it will use up 78% of the battery??
Right now? 78% battery says I'll get 1:55 minutes. sighh

look - I've owned 5 mac laptops from a 540c to my current 2.83Ghz Uni MBP.
NONE of them had this issue - EXCEPT this one.
I could put any of my other machines to sleep with 90% battery and wake them up 2 days later and find them with 86%... this one - if I leave it sleeping overnight with no plug attached, it is DEAD in the morning.
is this going to be just another one of those problems which Apple pretends doesn't exist?
I already had the hinges on my TiBook fall apart and the ATI card on my last MBP (2.16 17") go completely dead... now this - admittedly less serious but still very annoying issue.
I'm waiting for a solution Apple...
but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Battery drains while sleeping after RAM upgrade

Installed 16 GB of RAM and a Hybrid/SSD 1 TB internal HD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2012 and now the battery drains while the computer is in sleep mode, about 1-3 % per hour. Before the RAM upgrade (stock 4 GB of RAM) there was no noticeable battery drain, so I assume it has to do with the upgrade. I read that it takes more power to maintain 16 GB of RAM during sleep, so my questions are as follows:
    Is 1-3% per hour normal?
Will resetting the SMC help the issue?
Does the Hybrid HD have anything to do with this?
I am not too happy about the battery drain as it happens that I don't use my laptop for some time and prior to the upgrade the loss of battery charge was not an issue at all. Is this the price I have to pay for maxing out my RAM or is there a way (resets, settings, etc) to reduce the amount of battery loss
    Thanks for your input.

Hi everybody. I have the same question. I have a macbook unibody late 2008. I have recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite. In order to have a smoother functioning of the system I have immediately replaced my original 2Gb (1+1) RAM with 8 Gb (4+4). Since then, I have noticed a dramatic reduction of my battery charge during sleep mode. Now after 8 hours of sleep it goes from 100% to around 65% (before it was 95%). Is it a natural consequence of having installed a larger RAM or there could be anything wrong with my settings?
I have read a couple of articles about standby mode and standbydelay setting but this does not apply to my model of macbook.
Here is my pmset -g result:

  • Yoga 2 Pro Draining Battery Fast in Sleep Mode

I have a new Yoga 2 Pro with i7 processor. It works great and normal battery life is about 4-5 hours. But with a fully charged battery, i can close the lid at night triggering sleep mode, and wake up to an almost dead battery.
Why is this happening? It's really dissapointing and I'm going to return it if I can't find a fix. I'm on the latest BIOS with all current updates. I am not using Hibernate mode.
Closing the lid shoud not cause battery to continue to drain at normal usage rates.
I'm hoping it's the WINDOWS 8 software but I've tried all the settings I can find.

the OP said battery was draining overnight because y2p was not going into sleep mode. then op changed some settings and, as i understand it, now his y2p does not drain battery overnight because he pushes power button and it goes into hibernate mode before closing lid.
I would like to raise the issue of the difference between hibernate and sleep mode. I too find that if i put my y2p (and my mbp-bootcamp) into hibernate mode then my battery does not drain overnight. however, both my laptops drain the battery overnight in sleep mode... anyone have clear understanding of this? i've look at many articles on the web, but haven't found any that specifically indicate how fast sleep mode should drain batteries. I think my gf's mba-OSx also drains overnight in sleep mode and OSx doesn't even have a hibernate option (correct me if i'm wrong)...

Russa, from the KB article you linked notice that those maintenance scripts are no longer invoked by cron. They are invoked by launchd:
    Additional Information
The tasks are scheduled for 03:15 to 05:30 in your computer's local time zone. This is described further in "Mac OS X: Unexplained Disk Activity Produced by 'find' Process." These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large in Mac OS X v10.5 or earlier.
Therefore no user intervention is required, unless you are running Mac OS X "Leopard" or earlier.
It may seem overly pedantic to bring this up but this common misconception has a tendency to lead people into believing a Mac requires the user to perform maintenance over and beyond what OS X already accomplishes by default.
As others have written, a Mac takes care of its own housekeeping. It is best to simply let it work as designed.

  • Battery Drainage During Sleep

I saw a few posts on this issue but haven't seen anything in a while. My battery drains too quickly during sleep mode. Has apple addressed this yet. If not has anyone found a fix for it. It's really the only thing that has bugged me about this new laptop.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    No official fix for now.
You have to manage the sleep yourself! If it's a short sleep, just close the lid as usual and forget your 2% comsumption. If it's a long sleep (a hibernation), use something like deepsleep (http://deepsleep.free.fr/) and be patient during the wake up.
Yet a little effort and apple will be as worst as linux to manage power...

On my miserable T400 ,hibernating with 100% power, it was draining  approx 7% and the Lenovo support  stuff were not

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.
