Does Bootcamp Restrict Windows 7 Registry Editing?

I've been trying to disable core parking through the Windows Registry Editor.  Now whether you think that's a good idea or bad, it seems that most items in the Registry's menu are greyed and not accessable.  I am admin.  Is this just my lack of Windows prowess or has Apple restricted my Windows experience?

I will have to look up what that means. Or intails. But if it has to do with disabling features of the (Nehalem iX family of processors) then, and just me, on my PCs HT can be turned off, Power Options to change idle power. In BIOS there are a number of ways to change and adjust but THAT is what/where you are locked out using Apple's implementation and proprietary EFI.
Requires that you have a quad core (not 4 logical HT cores):
The setting in the 1st post of this thread  [ and the regedit it " replaces " in the cross-referenced thread ]  is solely to disable CPU Core Parking in Win 7 for  quad-core DAW's.

  • Why does Bootcamp install 32-bit version of Windows 7?

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) via Bootcamp on my mid-2011 Mac Mini Server.  The Windows install succeeds but I am unable to install the Windows support files.  When I try to run the Setup program in the Bootcamp directory, Windows won't run the file and says that the file is incompatible with the OS.
It turns out that Windows 7 is reporting that it's a 32-bit OS and, apparently, the Bootcamp support files are for the 64-bit version of the OS.
    Where have I gone wrong?
    Thanks,
    JZ

This is a case of me being ...well let's say 'inattentive.'  The Windows disk I was using for the install was indeed 32-bit.  I forgot that I have 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and I installed the incorrect version.
    Thanks for the reply, Rudegar.

  • Windows xp home edition works program does not sync contacts with ipod

I recently purchased a new computer with the Windows XP Home edition and it had a new program called Works installed. It takes the place of excel, powerpoint, calender, outlook, etc. Started to add contacts and my iPod 30gb says it can't sync contacts without outlook. Is there a patch fix for this? My old computer is on it's way to my son's, several hours away.

I don't own an iPod touch. I own an older 30 gb with click wheel. I am new to this whole thing-iPods, forums, etc. Of everyone in my family (adults) I am the most literate when it comes to computers and the other person is too young to be included in online forums. I just need to know if there is a fix for the iPod to correct the only with Outlook sync for the address book part of it.

  • Installing Windows 7 Upgrade Edition on a new Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I am a recent convert to Apple after becoming more and more disillusioned with Windows for the past 10 or so years. I have ordered a shiny new 15" 2011 MBP and can't wait for it to arrive!
My issue is that I am going to need to install Windows for occassional use with certain software as well as occassional gaming. I have a legitimate copy of Windows XP (as well as ME and 98) which I am perfectly happy with - However I understand that the new Macbooks will no longer support WinXP via Bootcamp?
I am a student and have recently purchased a copy of the Windows 7 upgrade edition to rectify this, but I have now read that you cannot perform a "clean" install from the upgrade edition?
I'm afraid I am finding this all very confusing. I do own a legitimate copy of WinXP, and am eligable for the Win7 upgrade, so any help getting this installed on my new Macbook? I would hate to have to keep my ancient desktop around just for Windows, as this would defeat the object of my new purchase.
    I have found the following guide;
    http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgra de-media.aspx
Does anyone know if this will work in my case or has anyone tried on a brand new MBP?
Thanks in advace for any advice and guidance you can offer.

I have read in an issue of Mac Format about installing Windows in VirtualBox? I'm not really sure how this differs from using BootCamp and what the advantages/disadvantages are...
Virtualization through Virtualbox (or Parallels or Fusion,) allows you to create a "virtual machine." In this virtual machine, you install Windows or Linux or whatever OS, just like you would a physical machine. But the "machine" is just some software and you view the machine as window within OSX. Think of it like a word processing program like Microsoft Word. You run Word to create documents. You can have multiple documents, but the documents can only be "run" within Word. And you can have multiple documents open at the same time and you can switch back and forth between documents without having to reboot OSX. So it is with virtualization. You can create multiple virtual machines (if you have enough hard drive space, just like Word.) You can run multiple virtual machines (if you have enough RAM, just like Word.) It's just that the "documents" are now operating systems rather than word processing or spreadsheets. The big advantage is that you don't have to reboot out of OSX in order to use Windows.
...i'm looking to mostly use windows for gaming, would this method be suitable for that as i see I would not have to restart the system.
And then we come to the disadvantage. A virtual machine has "virtual hardware". The "guest" operating system doesn't actually "see" the physical hardware directly. Instead a virtual motherboard, virtual hard drive, virtual keyboard, etc, are "presented" to the guest OS. The virtualization software must "interpret" the requests from the guest OS into things the physical hardware must do. As with any interpretation, there is a delay. Think of it like if you spoke only French and you talk through an interpreter to someone who only spoke Swahili. It works, but is slower than if you were able to speak Swahili. For most things, this is fine. The weak link is the virtual video card. A simple game like solitaire doesn't need much graphics power so the "slowness" is not an issue. But a FPS game like Call Of Duty or Crysis, where graphics performance is critical, a virtual machine often chokes. So the use of virtualization in gaming really depends on the game.
BTW, there is another technology called emulation that is similar to virtualization, but in general is slower than virtualization. Emulation is used when the CPU required for the guest OS is different than what the physical host has. For example, if you wanted to run Windows on a PowerPC Mac. This is why the Mac changing to Intel CPUs was so exciting because it allowed the use of the faster virtualization technology for Macs to run Windows.
So the decision to use Boot Camp or virtualization depends on your needs. Me personally, I work with virtual machines daily due to my work with testing servers and such. With virtualization I am able to run several virtual machines simultaneously and so can simulate a whole network all within my Macbook. My work doesn't involve much graphics tasks with games, Photoshop, video, etc, so virtualization is fine. If your game is a FPS, then you probably wouldn't find virtualization acceptable. But "simple" games it may be fine. Virtualbox is free, but Parallels and Fusion sometimes do better with certain games. Parallels and Fusion have trial versions so you may want to try them as well. If you do, when you create the virtual machines, do NOT activate Windows until you're sure you're going to purchase. The various products do NOT use the same file format so converting a virtual machine to another format is tricky. If you do activate Windows, then decide to use a different product but are unable to convert the virtual machine, it's not a big deal to call Microsoft for the reactivation, but it is inconvenient, so better to avoid activation until you're sure.

    Hi,
how much diskspace did you assign to the Windows partition ?
And did you do the reformating of the WIndows partition as described on pages 8-10 of the BootCamp Installation Guide ?
In your first post you mentioned 'fully install' twice. Any chance that the XP disc you use is an Upgrade disc and not a full retail/OEM one ?
Check with the label on the disc because such XP upgrade disc are not useable with BootCamp.

  • HKCU Registry Edit fails (System as user) on RDP

    Hi folks.
Can anyone confirm the following potential bug (or just my user error):
    Running Zenworks 11.2.3a.
    Create a empty windows bundle
Create a REGISTRY EDIT action in LAUNCH
    HKCU / Software / TestKey
Run as SYSTEM, but use logged in user hive instead of .default
Perform a remote connection to a test PC using RDP (not Zenworks Remote) as a non admin user (but a user who is a member of the Remote Adminstrator Group).
When trying to launch the above bundle, the following error occurs:
In the action "Registry Edit", the operation on key "HKEY_USERS\\Software\TestKey" failed due to the following error - "The specified path is invalid. at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32Error(Int32 errorCode, String str) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKey(String subkey, RegistryKeyPermissionCheck permissionCheck, RegistrySecurity registrySecurity) at Microso".
Specifically, you can see that the users SID is not referenced in the HKEY_USERS path when trying to write the key.
If we perform the same actions when logged onto the machine with the same user, but NOT remotely (i.e. actually at the workstation), there is no problem.
If we perform the same actions remotely with an administrative user (one who is at least in a nested local admin group), there is no problem.
It also seems to affect the "DELETE REGISTRY KEY" action - although no error is displayed (I assume the "do not show error if attempting to delete a key that does not exist" issue was resolved), the key is NOT deleted. I would assume that any registry operation where the SYSTEM user attempts to modify the logged in user's key on a remote desktop session will results in an error.
I'll raise an SR if anyone confirms I'm not being stupid, but I admit not many people are likely to see this issue.

    SR #10924934061.
    Seems confirmed bug.

  • Registry editing disabled by your administrator

    Win7 Enterprise edition.
    64Bit.
    In a workgroup setting.
    Logged in as local ADMIN.
GPO SETTING  -  USER CONFIGURATION/Administrative Templates/System - Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools
Prevent Access to the Registry is ENABLED
Disable regedit from running silently?  Is set to NO.
I have a batch file that looks like this below. It is a tool that we use to support the NBC software in use in over a 1000 computers some on a domain some off.
    @echo off
    cls
    echo NBC values:
REM  note: "findstr ." removes blank lines
    REG QUERY "HKLM\System\NBC\Software\CurrentConfig" /s | find /v "REG.EXE" | findstr .
    echo Done.
    pause
This BAT file worked without any issues in XP using the settings at the top BUT in Win7 I receive the message "Registry editing has been disabled by your Administrator" message.
By setting the GPO setting to "Not Configured" the BAT file works but we do not want to give users any access to the Registry.
Why does the /s setting not work in Win7 but works in XP?

My thinking is you could achieve what you wanted if it was domain based group policy as you could filter your admin accounts from applying the GPO so it wouldn't take effect for them, but would for non-admins.
But i don't think you can filter out the local policy in the same way - it's been a long time since i've used local policies - so there may be a way to do it - i'll take a quick look.
It's actually possible to do exactly this kind of filtering on the local group policy nowadays. At least in Windows 7/2008 R2.
It's not the same nice kind of filtering as you have on domain GPOs where you can select specific groups or users but you can setup different User Configuration for Administrator and Non-administrators.
Start MMC elevated and add the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in.
When the snap-in is added you have the possibility to change the target of the Policy Editor from the default Local Computer. Click Browse and select the Users tab and chose to edit Administrators or Non-administrators.
You can add them both to the console to simplify editing.
hopefully that should do it for you, if you just edit the local policy for non-admins.

  • Registry edit

I am trying to install two registry edits via a Zen bundle:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\O utlook\Preferences]
    "DelegateSentItemsStyle"=dword:00000001
    and
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\O utlook\Preferences]
    "IgnoreSOBError"=dword:00000001
In the bundle, under Advanced Settings, I have Run Action As System and checked Apply HKEY_CURRENT_USER changes to the logged in user's hive instead of .DEFAULT
The regedits are still going under HKEY_USERS .Default
If I 'manually' merge the .reg files, they go where they are intended so it is not the files themselves.

    Odd....
You could just try as "Logged on User" since AFAIK these keys are not
restricted from a general user modifying them.

  • Registry Edit Bundle Not Working

    Hi,
Running ZCM 10.3.1. The "test" workstation is running Windows XP Pro SP3.
I'm trying to create a bundle which will make a Windows registry change when the user first logs in.
I have a "directive" bundle which will create a registry entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Offi ce\11.0\Excel\Security\FileValidation. Each key is marked "Create If Does Not Exist" and the entry is EnableOnLoad (DWORD) with a value of 0 (also marked "Create If Does Not Exist"). I have a requirement set for "File Exists" = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE set to "YES".
For now, it's assigned to my username. The Distribution Schedule is "None", the Launch Schedule is "ZENworks Login" and the Availability Schedule is "None". The "Shortcut Location" options are all unchecked as I want this to force run (or whatever it was called under ZENworks 7).
In any event, the registry entry is not being created when I login (even though the agent shows the bundle is assigned to me). I'm assuming it has something to do with the shortcut location. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You need to Examine the Impersonation Setting of the Registry Edit Action.
You need to set it to run as the logged on user for HKCU.

  • Installing hp deskjet f4235 error: "registry editing has been disabled by administrator"

I have been trying to install by HP Deskjet F4235 printer and I keep getting this error message: "registry editing has been disabled by administrator". How do I get around this?

    Hi,
I think I confused Computer Configuration with User Configuration in XP, so yes, this policy does exist in Windows XP, sorry for my negligence.
And I am still confused with the silent switch you mentioned, do you mean the
    /s in the following command
    REG QUERY "HKLM\System\NBC\Software\CurrentConfig" /s | find /v "REG.EXE" | findstr .
It doesn’t mean a silent switch but  specifies to query subkeys
    /s
-------Specifies to query all subkeys and value names recursively.
You can find detailed information in this link:
    Reg query
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742028.aspx
To silently run the .reg file (with the /s switch) from a login script batch file, use the following syntax:
regedit.exe /s path of .reg file
so I suggest you re-edit the bat file use the above syntax for a test.

  • Can I downgrade to Windows 2008 Web edition with Windows 2012R2 Standard?

I read through 2012R2 licensing guide. It tells 2012 Standard can downgrade to 2008 Essential, Standard and Enterprise edition. Whereas 2012 Datacenter can downgrade to any prior editions.

  • Bootcamp and Window 7

I have a bootcamp 3.0 and want to install Window 7 on my macbook pro. Is it compatible? Thank you

What he means is "an old hand at Microsoft Windows" meaning you know how to use Windows and are used to working with it (kind of a bad way to put it).
Windows 7 works on every intel based mac (no ... as of yet Apple does not support Windows 7 ... possibly because a final release not yet available to the public).
On the original Mac Pro (which does use Intel Core 2 Duo Xenon processors that do support 64 bit processing, but will not boot a 64 bit kernel) and all Intel Core Duo macs (note I did not write Core 2 Duo) you will need to use Windows 7 32 bit edition and Apple's Boot Camp for Windows Vista 32 version 2.1 (which has all of the drivers for Windows Vista 32 - http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsvista32.htm).
As for the Intel Core 2 Duo Macs I only have experience getting Windows 7 64 bit edition working on my unibody Mac Book Pro 15". For that you can use Boot Camp for Windows Vista 64 version 2.1 (which has all of the drivers for Windows Vista 64 - http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/bootcampupdate21 forwindowsvista64.html). You can also use Boot Camp 3.0 that came on the Snow Leopard DVD.
As for other Core 2 Duo macs you will have to test them out for yourself.
This is all I know about running Windows 7 on Macs. Please remember that Apple does not support running Windows 7 on Macs.
    Good luck.
