Does changing iPhoto library "mess up" iWeb pages?

Can someone give me a short explanation of how iWeb stores its images on my computer, and how that relates, if at all, to iPhoto? Many of my iWeb pages are created from iPhoto albums. Now I would like to make some significant changes to my iPhoto library (divide it into two libraries, delete some images, etc). Willl that have any effect upon my iWeb pages on my computer that use those iPhoto images? Or, once imported to iWeb from iPhoto, are the images then part of iWeb independent of iPhoto? Thank you!

Bobio,
iWeb stores all of it's data in a file named Domain. This file, by default, is placed on your hard drive in this location. Once the iPhoto media is imported into iWeb, it is copied there and the iPhoto files are not affected by what iWeb does with the media. iWeb will actually store a copy of the original file from iPhoto--something to bear in mind if you are using large pic files. Your Domain file can become somewhat bloated if you are using a lot of large media.
So the short answer to your question is, yes, the iPhoto media becomes part of the iWeb file and you may do what you will with your iPhoto configuration without affecting it, and vice versa--changes to previously imported iPhoto media within iPhoto will not affect your pages.

  • What Does the iPhoto Library File Contain?

Does the iPhoto Library File (located: User -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library) contain both i) the images and ii) the layout, photo sizing, photo positioning, etc. for a Book Project created in iPhoto 08? I want to move a Book Project that I have created on computer "MacA" to another computer "MacB." MacA and MacB are not on the same network, so I will need to copy the file(s).
I want to be certain that the iPhoto Library File (described above) contains ALL OF THE FILES necessary to successfully move the Book Project from MacA to MacB. Will someone kindly confirm this. Thank you. Dale

If you have not changed the default setting for "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" then you iPhoto library is totally self contained and can be successfully copied to another Mac with the same or newer version of iPhoto - if you have changed that preference (strongly not recommended) then you will have great difficulty in moving your library

Why does my iPhoto Library.photolibrary in my MacAir running OS X Yosemite keep expanding?

I will find a way to empty the system trash
Does the System Trash refuse to empty?
Usually simply clicking the Trash icon in the Dock will show you a window with the content of the Trash and a button labelled "Empty".
Or ctrl-click the Trash icon in the Dock and select "Empty Trash".

  • Where on the HD does the iPhoto library live?

Hi, I'd like to copy photos to an external HD. Where does the iPhoto library live on my hard drive? It's not in the "Home" (picture of a house) directory (there is a "Pictures" folder there, but my iPhoto pics are not in here). Where else could it be?

James, the search took you to iPhoto.app?
Here is a screenshot of the iPhoto Folder and where it resides as default.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Where does the iPhoto library reside?

Where does the iPhoto library reside on your hd?  when I go to the search bar above, it shows 2 libraries!  I am about out of hd space so I am hoping that it has been duplicated somehow.  It's about 36GB. =)
    Thanks for your help!

By default it's in your Pictures Folder.
If space is an issue you can move the Library to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • What problems, if any, has anyone had by changing to iCloud with their iWeb pages?

What problems, if any, has anyone had by changing to iCloud with their iWeb pages?

The iWeb Application will still run after Mobile Me will be turned off; you can export your web pages to a folder on your hard disk and use ftp to upload the pages to another hosting service.
The generated webpages however will refer to icons located on the mobile me server. To make the forward/backward arrows in slide shows work again you will have to patch the iWeb Application. See Old Toad's tutorial on how to do this:
    Modify the iWeb Application: http://oldtoadstutorials.net/No.26.html
Also there is a nice tutorial on how to transit from Mobile Me to another service; see Roger Wilmut's page here:

  • IPhoto library messed up my pictures

One day i open my iPhoto app and i see that half and above my pictures are messed up ... upside down , stretched bigger ...!!!!!
What can i do ... i try rebuild re... re.... all of them but nothing ! I don't have time machine ...

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How does an "iPhoto Library Copy" folder get created? It has an icon that looks like a stack of photos with a pink flower.  It contains all my photo's (as far as I can tell) and the original "iPhoto Library" only contains "AlbumData.xml?

I upgraded to Lion last month AFTER wiping the hard drive for the second time on my 2011 macbook pro.  I am now suspecting that transferring my photos (I have over 8,000 saved on sd cards) to my computer is bringing all this trouble.
I was able to rectify some problems by dragging import file from library to desktop etc... But I am worried that these Copied Libraries and recovered photo files and AlbumData.xml file are a sign of something darker loomng ahead...

Sorry but we have no idea what's going on, or gone on, on your machine. Neither can we see it. We only have your somewhat sketchy post. You mention that you can rectify "some problems", you mention "all this trouble" but neglect to mention what these problems and trouble actually are. So, I'm afraid it's hard to respond to your post in a meaningful way.
A couple of thoughts: 8,000 photos is not a problem. iPhoto is good for 250,000 in any one library. So, unless you have very limited HD disk space, this is not the source of whatever issues you are having.
If you're dragging parts of the iPhoto Library around the place, yes there could be trouble ahead. Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are two ways to get a copied library:  one is to duplicate the Library yourself (either accidentally or deliberately) or while restoring from back up.

  • Iphoto library messed up

In some ways, I have similar problems as other posters. In some way, the problems are different.
Last night, I uploaded about 32 of photos to my iPhoto (4.0.3). Then I installed the latest software update. Afterwards, I edited some of the photos in iPhoto (rotate orientation, delete the ugly ones, redeye reduction and cropping). Then, I created a new album, named it, and dropped those photos in (as I've done before). Afterwards, I close my laptop and went to bed. At the time, I didn't quit the computer after the completion of my software update.
Today, I decided to upload those 20 or so photos to Facebook. However, after I uploaded it, some of them are blank, gray, and obviously corrupted. I'd say out of 20-something photos, 7 or 8 are good. I open iPhoto and now ALL my photos are gone.
Then I restart my computer and open iPhotos again. Still, no photos. I then repaired disk permission. I also duplicated my existing iPhoto library folder and backed it up. Then I "shift+option" start iPhoto and try to repair my library. And here's what I found:
    1) iPhoto quit unexpectedly last minute. By my estimation, there's less than 5% left. So it's almost done repairing.
    2) All my album folders are here. But they're empty.
    3) Most (But not all) of the photos I had before last night, is recovered. Though they are no longer in proper chronological order. However, they retained the edits that I've done (ie red eye, cropping).
    4) the latest batch of photos, the ones I uploaded last night, are still corrupted. They appeared as blanks on the import page.
HOWEVER, when I look for them in the Finder window, they are present in the folder. The thumbnail shows up fine in Finder preview window. But the super small thumbnail next to the file name is ruined. I didn't open the pictures in Finder. But when I check out the actual "Thumbnail" folder within Folder, the corrupted pictures all have 0kb thumbnails.
    5) The title of my photos are all renamed to "Roll 2 - ####" rather than the previous "DSC#######". However, if I look up those pictures in my Finder window, they retained their "DSC######" file name.
I tried renaming my restored library and re-restore it again. And AGAIN, it quit prematurely.
So I don't know what the deal is. The fact that the thumbnail shows up in my Finder preview window makes me think that there an uncorrupted copy of the pictures out there. I don't care even if it's small. I don't plan to print it. But I'd like to know how to find and recover them since they're NOT in the thumbnail folder.
Also, how do I recover some of my old photos and albums? There are picture there that I want to print. So I'd like to get the original version.
Of course, by the sound of my panic, it's obvious that I didn't back up my photos. Trust me, I've learned from my mistakes. Do I need to use 3rd party software to recover my photos? Help!

    Let's try it this way...
Assuming the rebuild attempt created another "iPhoto Library_1" folder, move it to the trash again. Move your original iPhoto Library folder temporarily to the desktop. Start iPhoto. You should be prompted to either locate your photo library, or create a new one -- choose "Create New..."
After iPhoto has opened to an empty photo library, quit iPhoto. Find your iPhoto Library folder on the desktop, and drag it to the newly created iPhoto Library folder in your pictures folder. Drop the old iPhoto Library folder into the new one (do not replace; you want it inside).
Now try the rebuild one more time. You'll have no albums (just recreate what you want), but all your photos should now be available again.

  • Why does old iPhoto library show that it's been updated?

I 'backed up' my iPhoto library a few months ago by dragging it to and creating a copy on an external drive.  I never used that extra, copied library.  I continued using the one in my home Pictures folder on my hard drive.
I am moving stuff around for extra hard drive space when I recognize my iPhoto library on my external drive (just as I left it, I'd just forgotten about it).  So for kicks, I clicked on GET INFO for that file so that I could compare it to my current iPhoto library.
Both were 'created' on the same day in 2009.  The old one was a little smaller than the active one.  Fine.
Interestingly, my backup copy said that it was Modified:  Yesterday 5:30pm.
my current library said that it was Modified:   Today 10:10pm.
QUESTION:  Why was my unused, backup copy of iPhoto Library modified yesterday when I haven't accessed that file, clicked on the icon, or even remembered that it was there (until today)?
I appreciate any insight you may have.  While not a burning issue, my interest is piqued.  THANKS!

Have you rebooted since the deletions.  That will empty a number of caches and may restore the freed up space. Also open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
locate the iPod Photo Cache folder and delete its contents.  Make no other changes to the contents of the iPHoto LIbrary Package.

  • Why does the iPhoto library file copy so slowly?

Every few months I back up all the important stuff on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012, 13", 750GB) to my 3TB external hard drive.
This has worked well for as long as I can remember. I used to have a proper backup program but due to the nature of my work and files, recently I prefer to just manually copy over each individual folder in my parent home folder, so I can have control of what is replaced and what is merged, etc.
However this time backing up, I had to copy every folder and file in 'Pictures' separately. This is because after trying to copy the parent folder in one transfer it didn't seem to be working well. I noticed that around the 11.22GB mark, the transfer would always slow right down from ~35MB/s to ~0.5MB/s. As you can imagine, with a Pictures folder totalling almost 300GB, this isn't something I wanted to put up with.
In the end, I figured out what was causing the issue. I tried copying just the iPhoto library file and discovered the problem occurred again.
Why? Is this a Yosemite bug or is it to do with the way that the file is structured?
It works fine otherwise and does not seem damaged.

    no idea
maybe if you provided some information someone could help
What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? Why do you think it is getting larger? what exactly are you doing?

  • Will changing iPhoto library name affect my photos?

I want to change the name of my iPhoto library from 'Samsung HDD' (in the picture) to other name. I'm going to change it via Finder -- by using Get Info and rename it, is this the right method? And will this affect my photos?
    Thanks in advances.

no - but backup first and after changing the iPhoto library name you have to depress and hold he option key, launch iPhoto and select the libraqry withits new name

  • Why does my iPhoto Library say 32gb when there's only one photo in it?

I am trying to figure out why my MacBook Air is running out of space, and am finding out that Photostream isn't photos in the cloud, it's photos in the cloud that it stores on my different computers hard drives or storage. So, I turned off Photostream, and deleted the pics as Disk Inventory X is telling me that my iPhoto Library is taking up 32.7gb of storage, despite there only being one picture in there that is no special picture. I deleted all the rest. There is ONE picture in the whole iPhoto Library, I deleted all the rest! What is taking up 32gb of my HD???

Have you rebooted since the deletions.  That will empty a number of caches and may restore the freed up space. Also open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
locate the iPod Photo Cache folder and delete its contents.  Make no other changes to the contents of the iPHoto LIbrary Package.

  • Best way to change Iphoto library referenced across multiple external drives

    Hello,
I am relatively new to mac and I think I've gotten myself into trouble with my large collection of photos. I have a single iphoto library which references photos on multiple external drives. However, iphoto is now very slow to launch and I believe this is due to the number of photos (~160k+, I think) in the library. How should I reconfigure my iphoto library for better performance? I would still prefer to have a single library if possible, am willing to have multiple if necessary.
Is the best approach to destroy my iphoto library and recreate multiple libraries, one for each drive with the libraries being located on the external drives with the photos? Any negatives to this? I am really worried about losing photos.
From searching the forums I believe I have an approach but I am uncertain if it is the best way. Is the best approach to destroy my iphoto library and recreate multiple libraries, one for each drive with the libraries being located on the external drives with the photos? Any negatives to this? I am really worried about losing photos.
The library itself is on the main hard drive while the photos are spread across 3 external drives, with some on the main drive as well. I have been manually importing the photos through finder, then adding them to iphoto. I am using Iphoto 11.
Any tips, pointers, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1 - a referenced library is extremely problematic and is strongly not recommended - especially one spread accross several volumes
2 -  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can convert to a managed library - check the option to copy imported items to the iPhoto library and rebuil using IPLM
3 - this is likely to cure the slowness too
4 - multiple libraries are not necessary or desireable
5 - the only protection against losing photos is a great backup scheme - I run Time Machine giving  me hourly backups and do a daily bootable clone giving a second backup - plus do an occasional off site backup

  • Why does my iPhoto library keep losing thumbnails?

I own an external Hard Drive containing my photographs and in the past 2 weeks, my iPhoto thinks it's a good idea to lose all of my thumbnails for my photographs.
When it tries to rebuild itself, nothing happens and remains the same and when I do it myself it's the same thing with no result. Had to create a new library but lost all of my photographs and when I redirected to my original library all photo's appeared!
Thought it was my hard drive but it seems to be working fine as my music library is on there too and seems to be working fine?
Is this an issue synonymous with iPhoto and has anyone experienced this. As a freelance photographer, this is rather annoying!
    Thanks for reading,
    Stevie.

    Thanks for the info guys.
The Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Just to let you know, my iPhoto Library did the same thing again where all thumbnails were missing. When I select an album to view, the pictures appears as cut outs similar to when first importing.
To resolve this I had to select another Library I had setup then re-select my original library where all of my photographs appeared.
Really not liking this system as I'm worried it may cost me money in losing the work of my clients. Appreciate your words of wisdom and advice; one and all.
