Does Changing my Apple ID mean I have to re-buy all my apps???

Wasn't sure where to post this question, so here I am.
I recently changed my APPLE ID because the email address I had originally used is no longer accessible.  A major reason for change was to be able to get email replies to questions posted here on he forum.
Since the change, while I can login tp icloud on my computer, I can't on my phone. 
Am at Apple store and was just told that changing my APPLE ID means I will have to rebuy all my apps???  After an iphone "Genius" told me this, he said, the store cannot support me any further in dealing with this issue.
I am VERY concerned about this, particulary about losing the data on my apps, not to mention the expense of rebuying dozens of apps.  This just doesn't make sense.  NOWHERE on the APPLE site was I told that this might be an issue, rather what it says is that one can change Apple ID anytime.
What to do?
