Does Chat ever work?
I've got a problem, and one solution from Verizon is to try chat. EVERY TIME I've tried I was told that chat is not available. Now, maybe my time selection is bad, but geez, it's 10 am and it's not available. Anyone ever gotten through on chat? What are their hours?
with live chat, when I click on contact us, it always shows live chat unavailable, but it checks and then refreshes after about 15 seconds. and THEN it's available.
if live chat never goes available while waiting on the contact us webpage, then that would be odd.

SL to Lion Upgrade Stall - Does Upgrading ever work?
I've been running Server across several versions.
Thought I'd try upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, despite the fact that NONE of these upgrades ever work.
Apple didn't let me down - the upgrade to my Snow Leopard server stalls at "Upgrading Services" and won't proceed past this point.
I of course have a bootable backup, so I'm still in business but I need to have some clues from an experienced upgrader what I might do to assist this process to complete.
Alternatively, I may have to consider a migration although I'm not particularly experienced at this kind of server operation.
Suggestions?We have not been able to upgrade this server. We've tried on three separate occasions - once while working the problem with medium-level Apple engineering in Austin. We are running on a couple dozen users, with minimal services - mail, DNS, DHCP, and address book as you.
We've tried upgrading both the server drive, as well as the backup drive. Both stall during the upgrade and it never completes.
We've also tried once after 10.7.2 came out, downloading Lion and Lion server fresh thinking/hoping that the bugs would have been squashed.
No dice.
In the current financial climate we're unwilling to pay a consultant to migrate everything to a new installation, and put up with the inevitable service disruptions and instability that generally occurs during this process. Our current Snow Leopard server is rock-solid after a rocky period early on.
A agree that Apple seems to be disinterested in these issues now - perhaps if the server ran on the iPhone we'd have more luck getting support! -
TBird 31.3.0 Does it ever work?
It does one task. If I'm lucky. Then it hangs and freezes and triggers the "not responding" message. Usually it doesn't even do that one task before hanging and freezing and not responding. And it's been like this for so long, I can't remember when TBird worked properly. Same thing in safe-mode.
I'm tired of reading technical explanations and figuring out how to fix things especially when often, the proposed fixes, though well-intentioned, are illogical. I'm tired of the AV conflicts. I see that TBird can't get its act together. Surely there are other programs that work well with whatever AV program is installed.
I think the thing to so is get another email program.

I tried everything. Safe mode. Tool bar and extension removals and disabling. It's a piece of crap. I've been living with this hunk if junk for more than a year, mostly due to inertia and, I guess my general laziness.
I've had it with the reading and parsing through technical explanations every month, and the crashing, and having to shut it down on purpose hoping that it'd run better after a restart. It's not working for me. Ever. Ever. I mean one mouse click and the program shuts down for, I don't know, 40 minutes, three hours, until I reboot my PC.
This is no way to experience my email.
I'll check out seamonkey. Is it a cloud based program? I'm looking to avoid the cloud. Thanks for your help. -
Auto update of time mode? Does this ever work?

I have just received a Nokia 6700 and previously had the Nokia 6300 and noticed on both that the Auto update of time just doesn't do anything? I am based in the UK on the Orange network. Even when I travel abroad and with this setting enabled, my phone time is not updated automatically? My current settings is with this off, zone set to GMT and daylight saving set to +1. I think these settings are protected when auto time is switched on.
Is this something that Orange needs to enable or assuming I have a data connection, does it just sync with one of the internet time servers (as PC's have done for years).It only works if the network supports it. It's a feature that has been in many phones from many manufacturers for years, but to most people it is useless.
I'm not sure if many networks actually bother with this feature. I'm fairly certain that none of the UK networks support it but not sure about t-mobile.
There is no way to sync the time with a server on a standard phone like the 6700. For that feature you would need a smartphone and an extra bit of free software. -
Verizon Call Assistant - does it ever work?
I've had FIOS (the triple package) for nearly a month now. Call Assistant (the desktop app) worked for a day then simply would not connect to the server. Always get a message saying cannot connect to one of the servers. Calling Verizon is useless. If you survive the endless recorded prompts, you eventually get a recorded message telling you there are tech problems. This has been going on for weeks now. How difficult can this be? By the way, this is in the Southern Maryland region (La Plata, MD to be exact.) FIOS service is new here, but still it's getting a little frustrating that you can't even get information on what the problem might be. Anyone know anything about this?

I positively hate the automated phone systems of all companies, not just Verizon, I want to talk to a live person, although I really don't find Verizon's to be as bad as some other systems. I know there are lots of folks that disagree with me.....

I was talking to someone over there not so long ago and they said they was an issue withCaller IDs not showing up any more on some users accounts.
On the subject of Automated Call Distribution (ACD) systems, don't get me started. They are the worse misuse of technology ever invented! But, I guess in some cases it actually speeds things up but the prompts are so generic it is easy to get to the wrong support queue, be put on hold only to find out you need to be transferred to yet another queue to wait in.
But, any large corporation with so many products/services as verison, undoubtedly has more than a few call centers to distribute calls to. Then, when you factor in state regulations and the need to get to state specific queues, I guess an ACD is required. Good for Verizon, bad for us folks who only want to speak to a person. That's why I try "0" when the ACD kicks off. -
Creative Cloud Files – Syncing issues/Bandwidth hogging – Does it ever work?
Having been a Dropbox user for several years I was keen to start using the 100gb of Creative Cloud storage to enable me to work on a project from home and pick up where I left off in the office.
However it simply doesn't work properly!
For example:
I worked from home on Monday and Tuesday on a project. All the files were successfully uploaded from my home Mac within seconds/minutes. I came into work on Wednesday and the files had not appeared in my CC Files folder. I rebooted my Mac and paused and restarted the sync and left it running, a couple of the files appeared but the process seems to hang fairly quickly. I've left it running overnight and my files have still not synced! the status bar at the bottom of the CC app shows "Syncing file 7 of 181 (9hr left)" but it never gets any further.
When syncing is switched on and running the process kills all the bandwidth of my work Mac causing outgoing emails to spend up to an hour in my outgoing mail queue, slowing web browsing to a crawl, hampering any other web usage/downloads/streaming/remote access etc. To prevent this I changed the preferences to only allow CC 50% of the available upload and download bandwidth.
I have repeatedly logged out/rebooted my Mac, closed and relaunched the CC app, paused and restarted the sync process and run the
rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/CoreSync/options.tix
command in Terminal as suggested in another thread.
The files I am syncing are not even that large, in total I am only using around 3% of my storage.
Am I on my own in experiencing these issues? Or are other people suffering too?Hi Matt,
In order for us to take a deeper look at what's happening here, we would need to take a look at the log files on both your machines. The location of the coresync.log file is included below.
Could you also tell me what version of the Creative Cloud Desktop app you're using (from preferences) and the spec of the Macs?

Mac - /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync/CoreSync-yyyy-mm-dd.log
(On Mac, you need to use the Go To Folder option from the Go option in Finder (menu at the top). Then in the pop up enter:
/users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CoreSync/
Then select go, this will take you to the folder containing the .log files.)

Java based Chat console works fine, but does not automatically scroll down to last chat item

The chat window does not automatically scroll down to the last reply in the chat window.

I cannot see what goes wrong in here and the manufacturer does not know how to fix this either.
Irritatingly this scrolling function is working normally in IE, Chrome and some other browsers.
I sure hope you can help me, as this is a very irritating problem that needs to be solved.

sorry for such a late reply. I tried modifying the java bean to resize the JScrollPane object also but even that didn't work. Then I hardcoded the size of my Java Bean in my forms code by trial and error. For example, the size of the bean area was 381x169. The values that I had to pass to the "setSize" bean method were 510x195. This made the bean exactly fit the bean area. Seems crazy to me, but there it is.

Okay, this is the question to end all questions. The one that stumps everyone, but I would really like an answer.
Okay, so here is the problem. On iChat, I am unable to do Audio and video chats. Whether it be from a .Mac account or from an AIM account, it doesn't work.
Here is what I have done to narrow down the possibilities a lot. I am running the newest iChat.
1. I have tried without a router (Even though it is an Apple Router)
2. I have tried without software firewalls in addition to router.
3. I have done hardwired and WiFi.
4. I recently noticed this when I switched ISPs. It says insufficient bandwidth despite the fact that my new ISP is 2x faster.
5. I have tried multiple machines and cameras.
6. Skype video and audio chat work fine.
7. I have changed the ports so I know that the ports aren't being blocked.
8. I have contacted my ISP and they said that iChat should work fine.
9. I have deleted the .plist file so that I can restore to factory defaults.
10. I have created guest account to use iChat to lower the chance of conflicting software.
11. I have set Quicktime's streaming limit to "no limit" or what ever was the highest.
I probably have tried a million other things, but under the above circumstances, it still doesn't work.

It is not so much a problem with iChat as a problem with the vast options there are in Networking.
In your case your Audio connection points to the fact that the ports needed for iChat are open. Video and Audio chats use the same ports.
He may have a good connection speed but the the other people on his Network at his end will divide that up into Bandwidth.
Think of it like a Highway with three lanes. When it is empty you can go as fast as you want. When there are more people it all slows down, sometimes to a crawl.
Audio chats will work at Dial-up speeds. (upto about 50kbps)
Video chats need 100kbps minimum.
Now in some Universities/Colleges in the States as Students effectively pay to go, they get regarded as customers and if the Internet access is part of the service then the IT dept sometimes allocates an separate IP address giving the student all the bandwidth he wants.
There can be issues with the number or routers on a large campus and how they keep all the subnets separate. This is normally done using NAT (Network Address Translation)
This makes sure data for one computer is passed through each device correctly.
Now the router and modem manufacturers don't all do NAT the same way so sometimes you get devices that "don't seem to Like each other"
Using UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) can help get around this.
If your son is in a shared room with a router for a room-mate then suing this may help.
If you can use UPnP then that may help.
I would guess this is something that is effecting your wife's contact.
NAT needs ports to be opened in your router.
Doing it with Port Forwarding or DMZ opens the ports to just one IP (Computer) on your home network which might also explain why your wife can not Chat if she is on the same LAN/network you are.
Apple have decided that iChat is an VoIP application.
VoIP has international Standards about how connections are made and one which ports.
IT uses a internet Protocol called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) that uses set ports (5060-5063). It uses one of these to make the call and uses the others as fall backs.
Now bigger firms and campuses can be using VoIP for their phone service.
Because some ISPs are or were telcom companies these sometime block the SIP ports to "make" people pay extra for the service (you can call anywhere in the world within the cost of your internet service).
They will normally unblock this if you day that have started to block an application you were using.
As you can see the problems can begin to overlap and cause issues that can be difficult to solve with a Once Only Fix.
Can you tell us if you and your wife are on the same home network ?
If so how many routers and modems do you have ?
What makes and models are they ?
What have you done so far to set them up for multiple computer to use the iChat ports ? (or otherwise)
Of course this is all before we get into Universities doing things at their end for "security" or limiting Bandwidth to students to protect their network from potential outages

I have owned a Samsung Galaxy Stellar for the about the past year and a half, which is only my second smartphone. I am not a whiz at all this but I'll try to be coherent. I had problems with the Stellar from the beginning: Very slow loading browser, problems with the cursor, etc. After about 6 months, the phone dropped, and no, I didn't throw it on the ground!
I have insurance and it was still under warranty, so it was replaced, by Assurian, I believe. The replacement phone had the same problems, plus a whole lot more. During calls, the wifi, and/or Bluetooth options would appear, or the phone would suddenly go on mute. In addition, when I tried to access my voicemail, what I heard was my own voice and outgoing message, not the one from Verizon asking for the password. These problems were intermittent, which made the Verizon employees dubious, but it's like the car that you take to the garage that suddenly works fine. Anyway, there were some other problems too, so I got a replacement phone again, which is the phone I currently have had for about 3 months. A few days ago it went from bad to worse. In fact it went Crazy!: Every call I make or receive is immediately dropped. Maybe after 5 or 6 tries, I can complete a call, but rarely. When I do, the mute and speaker options spontaneously activate, at the same time!! When I go into my voicemail, the messages are deleted in rapid fashion, one after the other, and I cannot get them back. Or, as I said earlier, the Wifi/Bluetooth screens appear, and it's difficult to punch in any numbers as I have to hit the back arrow many times. Strangely, the phone makes odd sounds: It buzzes or makes this odd chiming sound! If I didn't know better, I would think that I have finally lost my mind! I could go on but you have the gist. The phone is simply not workable. I phoned tech support, and she was very nice. After an hour on the phone, it worked ok, until the following day. She didn't do a factory reset, but she had me take the sim card and battery out. She did things on her end, which unfortunately I don't recall, but the phone worked ok until the following day, when it went crazy again.
I took it to the corporate Verizon store where I live, The guy said "It's a lousy phone, a cheap, bottom of the line phone." By the way, throughout this time, I had had about 6 hours with tech support, between this phone and the last one.
THIS IS MY QUESTION: I asked him if I could have a totally different phone, since this model is clearly defective. He said no, but they could send me another replacement. He told me to call trech support while I was there in the store and ask them, because they don't do repairs at the store. The tech on the phone told me the issue is with my Gmail account! That there is a virus on some phones and each time I get a replacement phone, because I have kept the same Gmail account, the virus keeps getting 'transferred', for lack of a better word, to the next phone. I was totally incredulous. Virus? She said, "Well, I use the term loosely, but it's just a weird glitch.When you get a replacement phone, bring it back and we'll save and upload all your data, and set you up with a new email account." I was confused and annoyed, as I had never heard of this, and felt I was getting the runaround. I asked her if they could give me a different phone (free of charge) and of course the answer was no. By the way, I should mention that the Stellar is no longer made. These are my options, according to the 3 different Verizon employees I spoke with: I am eliblele for the early upgrade which they call the Edge. From what I understand, it's the full retail price paid out over 2 years, with a partial payment made at time of purchase. One person told me that after 24 months, they would accept what I paid as payment in full? Sounds too generous. Option 2 is $50 of a new phone, and option 3 is to buy a new phone at a Verizon store that is having an android sale. So, I acquiesced to getting another replacement which I will keep until I buy a new totally different phone. My impression is that it's not like buying a bad toaster. They don't refund your money and let you get whatever you want for the same price! My question is this: Does Verizon ever just replace a phone that has had problems, with a totally different model? I have made as much of a stink as I can muster towards that end, but I am wondering if anyone out there has actually been able to pull that off?

After reviewing information about the overall function of the phone, it does not appear that Samsung has recalled the device or stated that all Stellar devices are defective, with that being said, the warranty would still only cover the same make and model. The only time a completely different phone is sent out is if the manufacturer deems the entire make and model overall faulty. It is common to have a few glitches and a master/factory reset, in addition to all other troubleshooting, will help resolve these issues. The Stellar is no longer made because there have been several Samsung galalxy devices launched, and this is common with any device manufacturer. Our recommendation is to take advantage of EDGE, if you are seeking a new device with low monthly payments. This gives you the chance to explore different device options without having a contract and you can EDGE up to a new device once meeting certain requirements. We hope to resolve your concerns here or by calling customer support.

Can't get video chat to work outside of LAN...
Hello,
I can't get video chat to work.
All computers, LAN and WAN are running the latest iChat under 10.4 (including latest updates).
Within our LAN, via Bonjour, everything is fine.
I'm now trying to set up an offsite Intel iMac (10.4) and I can't connect via video chat with them.
I've had this problem in the past and eventually gave up (so much for "it just works" - I've spent the last 10+ years dealing with Macs and Mac-based networking, I can't imagine "my dad" figuring this all out). Trying again with fingers crossed...?
If someone could help, it'd be much appreciated.

The studio router/firewall is a SonicWall TZ 170 Standard.
This router has a static IP.
All suggested ports on the SonicWall are set up correctly to allow in/out from our LAN.
All computers on the LAN have static IP addresses.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on any computers.
Internet connection speed = 7404 kb/s
The offside router/firewall is a LinkSys WRT54G
This router does not have a static IP.
DMZ is ON and set to the only computer connected to it.
Computer has a static IP address.
Quicktime streaming settings set as suggested.
OS X Firewall on all computers = OFF.
No iChat add-ons on computer.
Internet connection speed = 5116 kb/s

Opening the ports in the manner listed on that link will only allow one computer (IP) to use the open ports.
The Linksys is router and you have not mentioned what the modem is doing at that end.
Why not use UPnP here ? The Linksys does it (on the Administration page)
Most likely this needs the Respond to Anonymous Pings checked on the Security page.

Webcam not working for Macbook Air 2013 after upgrading to OSX Mavericks? Yahoo/ Google/Skype cam chats not working. Facetime works though. Any updates of Mavericks released to fix this?
I have a MacBook Pro Retina display: 15.4-inch late 2015 with OS X Mavericks install, only on second week.
Insight works on FaceTime, Skype, but yahoo program does not show insight cam in dropped down.
Now when I got my new MacBook Pro, I down loaded all new Skype (worked tested), FaceTime (Worked Tested), Yahoo (not worked)
Fix:
With the new Maverick you have to use there messager program Version 8.0 (4218). Once I add my yahoo account video works again.
It also supported AOL, AIM, Google Talk, Jabber.

Why is my ichat 5.0.3 video chat not working?
i've had my macbook pro for a week and the video chats been working perfectly fine. however, yesterday i tried to video chat, and it just said, this computer does not support video chats. the computer still recognizes the camera, and i can take pictures in photobooth and whatever, but on my ichat it just says i can only audio chat and it doesnt allow me to video chat. its really annoying me how this just happens out of nowhere. someone please tell me what the problem is, thank you.
