Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?

It used to be when you compiled your kernel (at least ten years ago), you would get a significant speed boost. However, with the speed of machine nowadays, I wonder how much, if any. Does compiling the kernel have a significant increase in daily performance or otherwise? If so, what portion of the system does it makes faster than before? In short, Is it worth it? I appreciate any comments.

The title of this thread doesn't limit responses to just redoing the kernel since it says "system run significantly faster".
The kernel is not the system...the system runs from HDD and ram.
To speed up that process, run everything possible in ram for system speed up.
I think for 500 packages loading from scratch to desktop in 45 seconds is fast.  And running after that in ram is super fast system speed "significantly faster".
The speed I quote is possible now.  With UDMA capability in the kernel, at least half of the install time is probable.
And that is for over 500 packages into KDE no less!
Using flash in IDE removes the latent search from the system and therefore must be faster.
Changing the kernel will indeed speed up the system...but only if it includes UDMA for the flash drives already available but not configured with the present kernels.
Using flash drives for ide cache repos will allow faster boot time, and reduce the load on the system.  You don't normally run many, many programs at once so put them in cache with a script to permit fast loading .
That is "system running significantly faster" and all in ram, the fastest in the computer.
no
Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?
compiling kernel, not whatever
I did not suspect that this requires explanation?
but if you really want the noise, let's leave "faster?"
and answer is: yes/no
whatever that means.
or you are joking
anyway seems that results may vary.

  • I have a macbook pro 4,1 early 2008 model running on 10.6.8 snow leopard was wondering if upgrading to moutain lion will make my system run slow?

MBP 4,1 running 10.6.8 snowleopard and it runs great but i was wondering if upgrading to moutain lion will make run slower?

Lion is still available but you have to Call Apple to order it and then they send you a Redemtion Code to your Apple ID Email address that you use on the Mac App Store to download it.
But in all honesty even Lion is going to make your system run slower then it now does. Lion, like Mt Lion, uses more system resources then Snow Leopard. I can see the difference on my 2011 MBP with 8GBs of RAM and a fairly fast hard drive. Snow Leopard boots and runs faster then Lion and more so then Mt Lion.
What you need is a New or Newer MBP. If that is not an option then the only thing I can say is give Lion a try. That is AFTER you do a complete Time Machine Backup of your current Snow Leopard install just in case you need to go back.
By the way Apple replaced the Logic board in your system with the same Faulty NVidia chip install in it. Apple Never Updated the NVidia chip used on those logic boards. So odds are sometime in the future, Near or Far, that board will fail again.

as above memtioned, after installing iOS-6, my iphone-4S is slow in running, such as can't open mail, camera and sometime stop.
how can i slove it, do i need to restore the last version.

There is no supported method to downgrade the iOS.
Before leaping to silly conclusions... try basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

  • Keeping The System Running Well

This is a rather vague post but basically are there any applications or tests (either 3rd party or native) that can test if my mac is running smoothly? I have not been impressed or noticed any difference since the switch to 10.6 and I have even had issues with crashes, shutting down, and speed. Thanks for your help.

    HI Tyler,
    Several things come to mind...
Boot from your install disc and run Disk Utility. If it finds errors on the startup disk, Disk Utility can repair them.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
You can also boot from your install disc and run the Apple Hardware Test, instructions Here.
Go here for hlep to Maintain Mac OS X
The most important thing you can do is back up your important data in case you should have to reformat the drive.

  • E-Recruitment - How do I determine what an activity does in the system?

Can anyone shed some light on how to determine information on activities? Example like 0010 Check Suitability etc. Any docs anywhere? Thanks

What an Activity does depends on how you categorize it in the IMG.  For example 0010 Check Suitability is a Simple Activity.  Here’s a brief explanation of how some of the Activity Categories work.
    Simple Activity
This is like a simple checklist.  There is no system functionality behind it.  Once the activity is done you mark it as complete.
    Qualifying Event
These are similar to Simple Activities.  There is no functionality for these activities alone, but in completing these activities, like a Job Interview, you complete fields that can be used in an invitation to the event.
    Simple Correspondence
A letter form (SmartForm) is assigned to activity types of this category.  These activity types enable letters to be sent via the Internet, to be printed by an R/3 system, or to be edited locally at the front end.
    Invitation
A letter form (SmartForm) is also assigned to activity types of this category. In addition, the activity types always refer to a qualifying event that is open for invitation.  It uses information in the Qualifying Event (time & location) to complete the invitation.  The documents can be processed in the same way as simple correspondence.
    Status Change
Activity types of this category change the status of the associated object.  You can define the new status per activity type and per object type.  Status changes also initiate Workflow
    Questionnaire
Questionnaire can be assigned to activity types in this category.  These activity types enable questionnaires to be sent to candidates using the Internet or to be included in the application wizard through a Process Template.
I found the documentation in the IMG to be quite helpful in this area.  I hope this helps.

  • When using Apple TV, is the system running iTunes forced to handle the media?

I've got an Apple TV, a PC running iTunes with Home Sharing turned on, and a NAS (network attached storage) device. All of the iTunes content (music, movies, etc.) is stored on the NAS. When I first set up the Apple TV, everything worked well. I recall watching a movie (stored on the NAS) on the apple tv and seeing little to traffic on the PC's network card. i.e. the apple tv had (apparently?) determined where the movie was located and pulled the content direct from the NAS. Note: the apple tv and PC are both connected to the network wirelessly but the NAS is hard-wired to the switch/wireless access point.
Flash forward a few months (and a number of ATV updates) and the apple tv has been running VERY slowly to the point where it's essentially unusable. It works fine for NetFlix or YouTube or other content coming from the Internet but can't pull and present any local media.
I've wiped the apple tv unit and set it back up. I've wiped iTunes (full uninstall and removed original library) and had it re-find all of the media. I now even have the media location referenced as \\server\share\path\file instead of <drive letter>:\path\file
But it is still running horribly. After some more checking, I now see that when I'm asking the Apple TV to access media from the NAS, the PC's network card is working furiously. For some reason, it appears the PC is being forced to pull the content from the NAS and then forward it to the ATV. This is terribly inefficient and is making a mess of what was an otherwise great media center experience.
Anyone have any thoughts? If this setup never worked, I think I'd be fine. But the fact that it once worked the way I expected it to but now doesn't is very frustrating. Obviously, the PC needs to be involved upfront to share the catalog and notify the player where the files are located. But, after that, it should be able to step out of the picture (no pun intended) and let everything work.

I assume no other tasks on the computer are using internet/network data concurrently reducing the bandwidth available for AppleTV.
I'm not surprised at the 50-60% (if that's when it's working ok) as AppleTV will take the media stream faster than the rate it needs to play back.
Are you maybe playing HD now and SD in the past?
    AC
Nope.  Made sure the PC was nice and quiet and off of a fresh cold start.
As for the SD/HD question - no to that as well.  The content hasn't changed.  Same files on the same NAS.
Posted my question to facebook last night to see if my friends had any thoughts.  I was surprised to hear that two other friends with ATVs had pretty much the same problem I was describing (worked great after initial setup but slowed down considerably recently).  And they both experienced the issue around the same time (starting about a month ago).
One fixed it by resetting the ATV and setting it back up again.  That hasn't worked for me.  My other friend said the problems cleared up after adding iTunes as an allowed application in Windows firewall.  So I'll see if I can fiddle with some settings there.  Don't recall there being too many options but it's at least an avenue of attack.  I'll report back if I learn anything.

  • Hi, does anyone know how to restore the System Preferences back in Mavericks. I had a system failure, did a restore, and now no system prefs. It all works apart from that. Thank you

Hi, hope someone can help, I am not Mac savvy. I had a system failure for some reason, and did a complete restore from a backup drive, and now no System Preferences. I had since also had the backup disk fail, so no other backups to work from. I am currently trying to restore these with a file salvage software.
The system runs fine, but, I cant change anything in the preferences. The PrefPane list is still there in the same file PreferencePanes. Thank You
    System below
OSX Mavericks, Intel 24inch 2009, 8Gig Ram, 1 TB HD

But, If I boot it from the DVD using the R Button will that work?
    No.
Will I Ihave to start from Snow Leopard?
    Hopefully not.
Here's the thing: your Mac is older and I do not know if it has the updated firmware so you actually have a recovery partition (part of every OS since Snow Leopard - takes the place of install DVDs).
So, you can test that: choose restart from the File menu and when you hear the bong, immediately hit Command + R. If you get a grey screen with one window on it like this:
If you see this, choose to reinstall OS X and it should install the current system.
If your regular desktop appears, then you don't have a recovery and will need to start from the Snow leopard DVD (insert CD, choose restart and hold down C key) and then reinstall from there. You won't need Lion - just update Snow Leopard and then re-download Mavericks.

  • HELP! T61P/Vista Ultimate - rejuvination halts at least 6 h. at 0% trying to restore the system

Now I am really tired as I have tried to reinjuvinate my T61P. R&R succeeds in completing the backup procedure as the first step of the rejuvínation of my laptop but step 2 which is the restore of the system from a previous backup simply halts at 0% completion and after wating for 6 hours without any visible change I gave up.
Therefore, now I have initiated the system restore manually from my Aug. 2nd backup and then I have to restore my data from the rejuvination backup piece by piece. Sigh!
Can anyone explain the reason for my troubles and maybe a work around if it happens again?
    Kind regards
    Per
PS!  This is written on a tiny Acer laptop as my T61P is still restoring.
    ************* Later:
I got up too early this morning and by accident!  ;-)    Well, it was at 5 a.m. today I could recognize that the restore of the primo August had completed. Then I launched the restore of my actual data and that's appr, 40 GB - and then I went to bed again.
At 8 a.m. I got up for good and saw that the R&R had reached a 34% completion. It seems that there is no activity on the USB disk from where the data is restored and on T61P the green disk led only lights with a very little flickering. Now I am afraid that the restore has stopped again. Why should it take that long (more than 3 hours) to restore appr. 40 GB and why do the activities seem to have stopped?
For how long should I be patient - and what is my alternative?
    ******** Later:
Now, the USB disk is alive againg but for how long? The completion percentage is still 34%.   OK, I will wait a little more!
    .... waiting .... waiting ...
     - and 90 min. later: it shows 37%.  HELP ME!!
If it continues at this speed then the process will last for at least additional 30 hours!!
    ********* a little later:
    It has reached 43% completion.
I realize that I forgot to tell you that I launched the restore from the R&R screen after botting and pressing the blue button - ssimply to avoid that any files would be locked by another process. Should I have done it otherwise?
     ********* Later:
At 55% completion it has stopped again - apparantly. Why must it take that long? Is there any better way to manage my current backups?
    ********** 12 a.m. Aug. 18th.
7 hours after launcing the restore of my data it says 58% completion. I do miss access to my T61P!
     ********* 1 p.m. Aug. 18th
    77% completion
    ********* 2:45 p.m. Aug. 18th
    87% completion
    ********* 5 p.m. Aug. 18th
100% completed ....BUT!  ... then it started a new restore procedure and as it had reached 9% completion I got too tired and interrupted it.  Now I have started a manual restore almost file by file in a prioritized way - so, those files I need now should be restored first. It is very time consuming but I can see no other way.
I think that Lenovo must emphasize as soon as you try to implement a new version of RnR that your previous backups might be obsolete - meaning that then you need to restart by running a new total system backup.
A question to Lenovo could be: Should I move / remove my old backups before I run the new total system backup after upgrading my RnR????

    Hi,
as far as I can remmeber, this kind of issue mostly happens, when you captured the backups using a different version of RnR, then you currently try to restore. The basis is , that you need to use the very same version of RnR by restore, as by the backup capture.
In case this is not your situation, I assume, this might be a situation of a corrupted backup files.
    Rgrds
    Oh Herik!
That does not sound nice! Anyway, I have used the very same version of RnR, so whether the backup is corrupted!? Well, now it has completed 80% of the restore. Somehow if the backup is corrupted, that might be the reason for the restore to take so long. Has Lenovo documented that you need to use the very same version of RnR? - meaning that you need to restart your backup with a total system backup after RnR upgrade?
Anyway, maybe the best idea after I have made the system running again - I should move all the backup files (incl. the corrupt one[s]) to another USB disk and then start with a total system backup. After that I may run my normal backup routine. Doesn't it sound correct?
I have updated my first original text in this thread. Please look at the top.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • Re: Does updating the display driver affect color management settings?

    Hello everyone!
I have received a message about the new display driver update and I have some doubts about installing it. When I installed an update for the BIOS driver, all BIOS settings returned to the default ones, but in that case it wasn't a big deal to set them again according to my needs. But I spent, probably, half a day, adjusting the color, using the color management, and I really want to keep the settings I've done. So, please, tell me, if updating the nVidia driver affects these settings and if there's any way of backuping them? Thank you very much!

    Hi,
If you install a graphic card driver, your setting will be set by default. To be honestly, I don't see any reason to update drivers if the system runs well. I still use the same drivers I downloaded before and don't make update for new one. About backing up the settings, I don't know how to do it.Anyway, I have never thought about it.
You are welcome, if have more questions.

Please let me know where in AWR report can I see the parameters affecting the performance of the system The question is meaningless.
The AWR report is all about performance but it depends what you're looking for, what timeframe, etc.
If you're just looking for a starting point to do something because you have early onset of compulsive tuning disorder, see (from the list above):

The references to statspack all apply to AWR.
If you have time to fill, reading those AWR resources would be a better first step than just leaping into an AWR looking for trouble.
Remember that there will always be a top 5 timed events, top N SQL statements, etc.

  • [Solved] Problems compiling a kernel on Archlinux

Hi all, some days ago I wanted to compile a kernel on my system, and everything was fine but I have a simple problem.
Compile the kernel in the traditional manner, but no logo create the ramdisk image.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … raditional
    Example:
    cp -v arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-NewKernel
    And:
    mkinitcpio -k NewKernel -g /boot/initramfs-NewKernel.img
    But I get this error:
Error: unable to locate module directory for NewKernel.
    What am I doing wrong?
    PD:Sorry for my English
Last edited by Linpandro (2012-10-03 13:50:43)

    This:
    mkinitcpio -k NewKernel -g /boot/initramfs-NewKernel.img
    Should be this:
    mkinitcpio -k 3.x.x-RCn-NewKernel -g /boot/initramfs-NewKernel.img
To clarify, the wiki tells you to run this:
    # mkinitcpio -k FullKernelName -g /boot/initramfs-YourKernelName.img
If you need any modules loaded in order to mount the root filesystem, build a ramdisk (most users need this). The -k parameter accepts the kernel version and appended string you set in menuconfig and is used to locate the corresponding modules directory in '/usr/lib/modules':
If you used the sources for, say, 3.5.4, "FullKernelName" would be 3.5.4-NewKernel.
If you're not sure about what the "FullKernelName" should be, simply check which directory was created after running modules_install
    ls -l /lib/modules
This should show you something like this:
    [stefan@archsteef scrub]$ ls -l /lib/modules/
    total 8
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Sep 30 01:30 3.5.4-1-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Sep 30 01:30 extramodules-3.5-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 1 03:25 3.5.4-NewKernel
The directory name is the full name of your kernel and can be used after the -k flag.
p.s. this is all assuming that you used make menuconfig to set the local version name to "NewKernel"
