Does converting to MP3 create duplicate files in library?

I figured out how to convert my songs form ACC to MP3 (for use with other devices), but now my library in I-tunes is showing duplicate songs for these selected songs. Does this mean when I connect my IPOD that there will be both the ACC and the MP3 on there now and take up double the space for each song?
Thanks!

When you convert in iTUnes, it keeps the original and makes a COPY in another format. SO if you have "Dolly Parton - Cuntry girl" in AAC format, and convert that song into MP3, you will end up with 2, one original in AAC and another copy in MP3. If the ipod is set on its default of "AUto update all songs" yes both will be put on the ipod.
If you wish not to have AAC files, first goto edit>preferences>advanced tab>import sub tab and chage it from AAC to MP3 so future imports from CD will be in MP3.

I'm having the same issue. Old ipod 160 gig worked for years; it crashed. I bought a new "used" ipod. It starts reading all my music and syncs a few songs then crashes. I get the same screen you do about duplicate, etc. Very frustrating. I'm downloaded the new iTunes (not impressed). I've tried unchecking most of my music to see if that would help but it didn't. Any suggestions? Thanks

As stated above you can still add your artwork manually:

iTunes: How to Add Artwork to Songs
If you have an iPod make sure it is enabled to show the artwork.
A tip for finding suitable artwork is to go to Amazon, locate the album, save the picture to your desktop and drag it to the iTunes artwork pane. Another way would be to locate artwork using Google image search and put the artist or album name and save the picture you find there in the same way. There are also some programs like this one: iTunes Art Importer or MP3 Tag

When I try to launch After Effects, this message appears:
"After Effects warning: Could not create the file '/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.0/dummy'"
I have followed the advice from other posts on this issue regarding resetting all of the permissions in the Adobe folder in my library to read and write , but it doesn't change anything. I still get the same message when I try to launch the program. Moreover, there is no After Effects folder in my Adobe folder, even though it's clearly in my Applications folder.
I also uninstalled After Effects and tried to reinstall it, but to no avail.
I sure would like to give it a try, as I was planning on purchasing it, but this is just one more issue in a long irritating line of issues that have arisen since trying to download it from CC.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am having this problem and this response does not make sense. I made the "Preferences" ,"Adobe" & "After Effects" folder along with the 10.0,11.0,13.0,13.2 folders all read/write. Can't seem to find an answer.

  • ITunes and I seem to have created duplicate files.  How do I clean this up?

Hello experts.  I have a conundrum I'm too inexperienced to reason out.  Hoping to tap your creativity.
I have a huge iTunes library I've created over the years.  50,000+ songs.  No problem, other than my desire to whittle through it slowly and pare it down to only the 22,000 or so I want to keep as my primary library.  I haven't gone through the effort of creating multiple libraries yet, I simply delete songs or albums from the library as time permits without deleting the original file.  I figure iTunes' database will be my primary and in the long-game, I'll create a new library that holds everything, but for now I'll just keep whittling the dB structure away until I get what I want (this is a slow, multi-year project I'm undertaking -- no rush here).
    Here's my problem:
Most of these songs are physically saved in the iTunes folder on an external hard drive.  Some of the songs I added to my library from the iTunes store when the external hard drive wasn't connected to the Mac - so they are on the Mac's hard drive under the standard iTunes folder structure.  I have the "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checkboxes checked.
As I said, I've deleted songs from the iTunes app, but told it to "Keep Files" so that I could listen to them in the future if I decide to re-add them.  Yesterday, I ran out of space on the startup drive of my mac, so naturally, I figured I could consolidate any files on my hard drive over to my external hard drive and delte them from the mac.
In iTunes, I went to File -> Library -> Organize Library.  I checked both boxes for "Consolidate files" and "Reorganize files in the folder..."  I let this run overnight to consolidate my library into one place.  Today, I found that the function was unable to complete due to lack of disk space on my external hard drive.  When I went to check the external hard drive, I found that iTunes had duplicated all of the songs that were on the external hard drive in their existing folders.
For example, now I have a file under the structure:  iTunes library -> Music -> Blue Oyster Cult -> Heaven Forbid -> Cold Grey Light of Dawn.mp3
And I also have a file under the structure: iTunes library -> Music -> Blue Oyster Cult -> Heaven Forbid -> Cold Grey Light of Dawn 1.mp3
So now the immediate problem...  The consolidation didn't finish, so I don't know exactly how much duplication iTunes created.  I checked my library, and sure enough, the song in the library is pointed at the duplicate file (the one with a 1 at the end).  I don't have the option to just copy the iTunes library to another external drive temporarily (or not easily, at least).  I checked out a bunch of duplicate file cleanup programs, but the ones I found (and I even purchased Gemini's dupe file finder/cleanser) don't seem to inherently choose the correct duplicate file that is linked to iTunes library dB.  I can't realistically pick and choose from the thousands of files that have been duplicated.
I decided to change the advanced preferences in iTunes to an entirely new folder on the External hard drive.  Then I could just go back into File -> Library -> Organize library and select only the "Reorganize files..." checkbox without selecting the "Consolidate files" checkbox.  I figured this would just move all the files that are in the iTunes dB to the new iTunes folder.  Ummm.... but no.  Apparently this "Reorganize files" checkbox is only available if you select "Consolidate files"...?   To be clear, "Reorganize files" is greyed out.
    So to summarize:
    1.  Why did iTunes create copies of existing files in the exact same location they were in?
    2.  What is the right (and I pray easy) way to get my library back to the right size and consolidated into one place?   I'm still dangerously low on disk space on the mac...
    <sigh>
Thanks for reading through all this!
    Tim
    Mac Mini  OSX 10.8.3; iTunes 11.0.2 (26)

See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11,  but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

  • How do I convert an mp3 or WMA file to a m4a file?

I read on another forum that iTunes can convert mp3 and wma files to m4a format.
    How do I do this?

    That is correct.
By default if you load a .wma file into iTunes, it will AUTOMATICALLY convert it to another format first, since it needs to in order to play it. However, you can also convert any other file format that iTunes supports, assuming it can get loaded into iTunes.
To set what format you want to convert to, go EDIT->PREFERENCES. Click the IMPORT SETTINGS button and select which encoder you want (AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV are supported) and then select the bit rate if you are choosing a lossy format (AAC/MP3).
From there, any .wma files you load into iTunes (you can do this by going into iTunes and selecting FILE-> ADD FILE TO LIBRARY, or simply right clicking a .wma file and OPEN WITH iTunes) will convert to that format. ALSO, if you have any other files already in iTunes you wish to convert, select the file(s), and go to ADVANCED -> CREATE ___ VERSION (the blank being whatever you selected before) and it will convert for you.
Remember, converting a lower quality song to a higher quality format/bit rate won't "up-covert" any quality, the lowest quality you start with is the highest you can possibly get, but if you still prefer to have a certain file format or bit rate to compress to, this is the feature you'd use!
Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Syncing edited songs without creating duplicate files ... ideas?

I'm thrilled you can now move songs via iTunes to different computers. My issue is that I want to move songs when I change info for a song (ie. star rating, comment, etc.). If the song already exist on the other computer moving the song via iTunes creates a duplicate on the receiving computer. Ideas?

While also time consuming, the Consolidate command will do it and is automatic.
What you would do is go into your iTunes preferences and change the iTunes Music folder location. Pick something like a spare external drive or if you have enough room on your internal to duplicate your whole library, another spot there.
Now invoke the consolidate command. What this command does is copies any files not in the currently identified iTunes Music folder location into that location and updates the database so the song is now accessed from that location. Since you just change the location to somewhere else, ALL of your library is outside that location and will be copied into it.
So here is the part that helps you. All those 19 gigs of orphaned files are left behind. If the file is not used by iTunes it is not copied. So the new iTunes Music folder location ends up being a clean folder with only those files actively used by iTunes.
As that point you can either continue to use this new location and delete the old location from your computer. Or if you want everything back in the same place, clear out the old folder then change the location back to that folder and consolidate everything back. Again, will take a fair bit of time for many many gigs, but you can start it and go to bed, go to lunch, work, go watch a show as it is done automatically.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • ITunes consolidation creates duplicate files in iTunes Media folder

    Hi,
I recently downgraded from iTunes 11.0.2.26 to 10.7 to get around an AirPlay bug i see starting in 11.0.
As a result I need to rebuild part of my iTunes library and am seeing some strange behavior.
I have some Movie files currently in the iTunes Media folder (where iTunes is pointed for the media) -- when I drag and drop these into iTunes and do "Consolidate Library", iTunes creates 2 files (1 is a duplicate) in the Movie folder. For example, if I have a movie titled "HomeMovie" I see the following folders:
"Movies --> HomeMovie" and within the HomeMoview folder I see the following 2 files: HomeMovie.m4v, HomeMovie 1.m4v
There is only a single listing (HomeMovie) in the iTunes interface, pointing to HomeMovie 1.m4v.
    Strange.
I can get around this by deleting HomeMovie 1.m4v. and pointing iTunes to HomeMovie.m4v, but this is not desirable.
"Copy files to iTunes Media Folder" is disabled.
I am also seeing this behavior when dragging and dropping files from an external Hard Drive.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi,
I have been doing some testing on this subject and I agree that PSE does leave unwanted temporary files around.
I checked out PSE 9, PSE 10 and PSE 11 and they all leave the temporary files there. I'm assuming that the files are created as a safety measure for when the main file is updated but as you have found out, PSE doesn't remove them.
By reading other forum threads, I get the impression that Adobe aren't really interested in it as they feel we should tidy up our own file system. It's like taking a walk through the park and dropping some litter - do you pick it up or leave it for the park keeper to pick up. I was always told to pick it up.
I'm not sure whether you are aware, but there is another Adobe forum for bug reports and feeback. I think Adobe may look there more than they do on this forum. I searched that forum and found a similar question asked but nobody has answered. I have added my count and comments with a link to this thread. If you can, it might be good for you to add your count.

  • ITunes creating duplicate files under a hidden folder named "Volumes".

It seems my iTunes program is secretly making a duplicate file in a hidden folder called "Volumes" on my laptop hard drive. It's now maxxed out my drive and I need to both remove the "Volumes" folder and make sure it doesn't get created and happen again.
    Details:
Using a Powerbook G4 with an 80gb drive. Using iTunes 8. The iTunes library program is in the usual place on the lap top hard drive but the music library folder, where all the files get saved to, is on an external drive labeled "Media".
Clicking normally and searching around my laptop hard drive, I do not see or am able to access the folder named "Volumes". But I know it exists as I ran a scan program called jdiscreport and it clearly shows a huge folder, 45gb, named "Volumes". There are also a few old flacs in the "Volume folder also. The iTunes duplicate files are in identically named folders as the external drive: iTunes Music located within Media, located within Volumes.
When I rip a CD in iTunes (or the iTunes-LAME program I sometimes use), the files do go to the proper external folder as expected and as I've set in the iTunes preferences section. So why is iTunes also saving the same thing to this mystery "Volumes" folder on the lap top hard drive? How do I get rid of this folder without wiping my drive? How do I stop it from continuing?
Help, I have 2gb of free space left!
    Thanks, James

Hi I am having a similar issue, It all started when I tried to restore from the Time Machine and it threw a error back stating that there is no disk available. I was wondering how come and went to find out what is happening and was shocked to find out that actually my entire Macintosh HD has a duplicate copy inside the /Volumes folder. I went to the XTERM to investigate and found that the / (root) has a Users folder where all my stuffs like pictures, music, movies, documents reside and the same data or content is duplicated in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder
I first thought that it was only a link, but I later found that it is not a link and it is indeed a physical copy of all my User folders inside the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder and actually occupying my Hard disk space.
I am not sure how this happened or how it is duplicating itself. I am also afraid to delete the stuffs inside the /Volumes folder as it might crash my system (it is already hidden - I assume it is hidden for some purpose). Please suggest any options, how I can get rid of these duplicated data and how to avoid such duplication in the future.
    Thanks

  • Premiere Pro CC creates duplicate file names for recorded VO's

When I add a voice over (VO) to my project using the audio mixed it creates an audio file in the form of Audio 2-xx.wav and it automaticly increments the xx for each new recording.  Now using the CC version of Premiere, and after trying the link to Audition CC, it starts over with duplicate file names.  The file names look the same as existing files, but the new ones have an extra space betwee the "Audio" and the "2".  How can I control the file names that Premiere assigns to new Vo recordings?

  • System creating "duplicate" files

I'm the network security analyst and "computer manager" of a company that uses windows, as/400, and mac's. I'm still learning the as/400 and mac's.
Right now I've got a curious problem going thru the mac's here. The problem appears to be localized to Mac's. When User "A" creates a new folder as “Folder”, User "A" will see “Folder” and “FOLDER” on his unit. User "B" will only see “Folder”, yet User "C" will see it as “FOLDER”. If User "B" puts a file in “Folder”, User "C" will see it in her “FOLDER” and User "A" will see it in both. Yet, if User "A" deletes one, they both are deleted.
Our servers run Win2K3 Standard server and one is set up as a member server on my network for the mac users. If I log onto the server and look in windows explorer, I only see the single "Folder". I see the same when looking at it from my workstation.
Any help will be realy appreciated.

The issue is down to SMB/CIFS (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System) and AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) 2 different services.
What mac os are you running?
With 10.5.8 i find that accessing a pc or NAS (mine supports SMD/CIFS/AFP) shared folders under the 'SHARED' menu on the left hand side of a finder window limits conflicts as it uses SMB.
But if i connect to a server via 'GO' 'CONNECT TO SERVER' on a mac it connects under AFT and if i create a file it is not visible when connecting under SMB (this is not always the case).
Macs can see SMB so it's easier as that is the service pcs use. For mac to mac AFP or SMB, i haven't found one better than the other. Macs and pcs are alot more compatible than a few years ago.
    I hope this helps.

  • New install creates duplicate files

I'm new to the IPOD/ITunes combo. I installed everything on the computer, opened ITunes, and it started converting files. I understood when it was doing WAV files, but it seemed to be converting MP3 to MP3 then adding a " 1" to the end of the file name. I set the option to MP3 due to the other MP3 players in the family. I stopped the conversion process when I figured out that it is was converting MP3 to MP3. The songs appear twice (title, then title with the " 1" after it in the ITunes list, but I can't find the " 1" file on the hard drive anywhere. Is there a way to stop it from duplicating the files?
