Does Core 2 Duo Processors equal speed of PPC dual processors?

Greetings Apple Discussions:
Is the (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor) In the 17" MacBook Pro, relatively as fast as a (dual 1.2GHz processor) of a G4 PPC in a Quicksilver. By relatively I means is the (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor) a dual 1.2GHz reaching a peak speed of 2.4GHz or is it a dual 2.4GHz reaching a peak of 4.8GHz?

Thanks for the reply Rajesh:
"equivalent of 2 2.4 processors" is what I wanted to know.
Actually my brother is interested in the MacBook Pro. I wanted to be clear to him with the benefits he would get from it as opposed to a PC. I also had him considering getting a Quicksilver 2002 with and dual 1.6GHz for processing power and cost saving, but he wants portability.
I am considering expanding my Sawtooth video card from the current radeon 8500 to the radeon 9800 AGP, because it can migrate to a G5 I am aiming at upgrading to in the future. I just need to know all the G5s it is compatible with.

  • My Mac has an 1.86 Intel Core Duo, does that mean I can't get Lion?

My Mac has a 1.86 Intel Core Duo, which is not listed for use with Lion, but I'm wondering how if it would work anyway.  Just replaced the harddrive recently, and it otherwise meets our needs, don't want to upgrade, but want to use ICloud.  Any thoughts?

It won't work at all. Lion will not allow you to install on a Core Duo because Lion requires a 64-bit processor. Your computer is only 32-bit. You can either sell your computer or give it away and buy a newer model.

  • Core Duo?

Hey all...Just Saturday, I switched from many long hard years of Windows to Mac OS X 10.4.5, with the new Intel Core Duo 20 inch iMac. Now, I've been chatting with some friends, but some say one thing, some say another. My question is this...does core duo mean 2 2 GHz processors, or 2 1 GHz processors, for my 2 GHz Core Duo Intel iMac? Thanks in advance.

    I'm confused...it's 2 2GHz processors, but it's not 4GHz speed wise? How so?
EDIT: Nevermind, I understand. Basically, it's two 2GHZ processors in that, they're in one chip, both run at 2GHz speed wise, but they can both be used at the same time, so in a way, it provides double the power, but not double the speed. Designed basically for multi-tasking, which explains why I can do so much at once on only 512 MB of RAM.

  • How can you tell? dual core or dual processor

    I recently purchased a G-5.... SUPER!!!!
How do I know if my new machine comes with a dual core processor
or is it a dual processor?

The easiest way is to go to the Apple support site and put in your serial number where it says "About your Apple Product". If it states Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), then it is a dual core model.

  • Can FW800 133 MHz board from single 1 GHz machine take a dual processor?

I've read in more than one place that the logic board from the 1 GHz FW800 machine can't be used with ANY dual processor. Can anybody tell me with a reasonable degree of certainty whether this is true or not?
Please don't bother answering based on general principles. I already believe -- tell me if I'm wrong -- that every other MDD FW400 or FW800 board CAN take a dual processor and, except for this question, EVERY processor will work EITHER with EVERY 133 MHz board OR with EVERY 167 MHz board.

From my experience the processor card should be compatible, but don't hang me if I'm wrong.
This page showes how to set different multipliers = bus ratios.
So, according to the default multipliers for the MDDs, you get:
    6.5x 133 MHz bus = 864.5 MHz CPU (867 MHz)
    6.0x 166 MHz bus = 996 MHz CPU (1.0 GHz)
    7.5x 166 MHz bus = 1,245 MHz CPU (1.25 GHz)
Thus, if you put a Dual 1.0 GHz onto a 133 MHz board, you'd get not 1.0 GHz but 800 MHz instead (798 MHz to be exact). The same goes for the 1.25 GHz where you'd get 1.0 GHz (997.5 MHz), and for the 1.42 GHz where it'd be 1,1 GHz (1130 MHz, multiplier 8.5x).
    6.0x 133 MHz bus = 798.0 MHz CPU (1.0 GHz → 800 MHz)
    7.5x 133 MHz bus = 997.5 MHz CPU (1.25 GHz → 1.0 GHz)
    8.5x 133 MHz bus = 1,130 MHz CPU (1.42 GHz → 1.1 GHz)
So, if you alter the bus speed of the board (see here, link is from the xlr8yourmac page linked above) you will be able to use the Dual processors for the 166 MHz bus on your 133 MHz board, then overclocked to 166 MHz, at their designed speeds. If you don't what to change the boards system bus speed the processors will just be underclocked, thus run slower – with all the advantages like less power consumption and less heat emission together with a prolonged lifetime.
To fit the 133 MHz system bus you would have to change the multipliers on the processor daughter card to run at the processors native speeds.
    Just one example:
    1,000 MHz / 133 MHz = 7.5x
So, if you'd want to run a Dual 1.0 GHz processor on a 133 MHz system board you'd have to alter the multiplier from 6.0x (for the original 166 MHz system bus) to 7.5x (for your 133 MHz system bus) – the resistors to change the multiplier reside on the processor daughter board.
That said, keep in mind that this procedure is *NOT tested or confimed*, but it seems logical, doesn't it?
I had a OWC Mercury Extreme 1.4 GHz processor upgrade placed in a Gigabit Ethernet replaced into a Quicksilver (2001 version). As you can see here, it had set the multiplier to 14x to have it run at 1.4 GHz on the Gigabith Ethernet (100 MHz system bus) and I had to set the jumpers to a multiplier of 10.5x for the Quicksilver (133 MHz system bus).
Thus, if I had put the OWC Mercury Extreme running at 1.4 GHz in the 133 MHz bus Quicksilver unmodified back into the 100 MHz bus Gigabit Ethernet, it would run at 1050 MHz (roughly 1.0 GHz).
That's it. There wouldn't be more to it than that, but the latter source (for changing the motherboards system bus speed) states that Apple put in some protection on the processor daughter card to prevent increase in system bus speed if no dual processor is present. Since this doesn't apply to you as you stick to your 133 MHz system bus it shouldn't bother you.
*But don't blame me* if it should turn out to be completely wrong!
    Cheers,
    Andreas.

  • Ventilation and dual processor upgrades

    Hi to all,
I recently decided to change the ventilation on my powermac G4 dual 1ghz MDD. I'm getting tired of its noisiness.
Doing a little research i fell on some dual processor upgrades and thought i could do both.
Has anybody tried Gigadesigns processor upgrades?
    <www.gigadesigns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4>
If so, are you happy with it? is it worth it? Does it help for the noise?
I use my G4 for intensive editing(FCP,studio pro, After effects) and would enjoy a G5. But while i'm waiting for that to be possible, would it be worth patching up the G4?
Thank you very much for your feedback..
    tee.

sorry dude. the MDD G4's cannot, technically, use any upgrade processors...
unless you found someone willing to sell you their dual 1.42GHz G4 dual module. or your could whip out your soldering gun do a little OC'ing.
    for cooling though--->
there is a nifty cooling solution you can implement if your MDD is out of warranty. Verax, its out of Germany. they have some nice cooling setups for MDD. One is for the giant 120mm system fan, the other listed below is for
    the dual CPUs.
    here is a link-->
    http://www.verax.de/verax.php?template=catalog_entry&entryid=44
I've read about these Verax coolers once before back when I first got my G4 MDD, because many of the MDD mdoels were noisy as heck, and dubbed the
    "Windtunnel Mac."
On a side note, i even read about people encasing their G4 MDD inside of noise proof boxes and such.

  • Migrating from single processor to dual processor Callmanager

    Hi Networkers,
had anyone install a Callmanager 4.1 dual processor version of CM4.1-K9-X345D= before in a single CPU in a dual processor capable server before.
Can it work in the first place?
Had anyone successfully migrate it to a dual-processor later on?

I dont think there is any difference in Callmanager software for a dual processor versus single processor server. For 7845 (dual processor) the hardware detection disks may be different from the one for single processor (7825, 7835)
Migrating from one to another is as easy as taking a BARS backup from one server, build the other server to the same version and restore it. (Make sure server name and ip are the same for both servers)

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

  • Core Duo Processor

How does the power of a Core Duo Processor compare to that of a single processor? For example, is a 2 GHz Core Duo Processor as powerful as a 4 GHz Core Processor?

On average, what is the speed of a Core Duo compared to a single Core Processor?
The thing is, to say anything at all would be dependent on software. Whether it were multi-threaded, whether it depends on RAM bandwidth, hard drive performance etc etc.
For instance, my Mac Pro is generally faster than my MBP is a serious way although if you were to compare CD rip times there's not a lot of difference. This is mostly becuase the optical drive is now the bottleneck rather than the data processing and encoding. If you were to make comparison based on this and tasks like this then you'd say the MP isn't worth it.
For what use are you really wanting to compare?
The real answer ranges from not a lot, if any, difference to quite a substantial difference.

First correct the pirate disc issue. Buy OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard from Apple for $19.99 here http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Snow Leopard is the latest version your macbook 1,1 will run. Oitlook is part of the Microsoft Office suite, if you want outlook you'll need to also purchase Office. If you can get by with Apple's mail program there are free alternatives to Office like Libre Office or Open Office.

  • How does Core 2 Duo works?

    Hello there,
This may be a silly question and probably not the write forum to post this issues.
But since my MBP comes with the built-in Core 2 Duo - I hope it will be all right to seek for help here.
I have tried many other search regarding this matter - But I just can't seems to find answer for it. Most of them comes with technical name and informations which I don't really understand the terms they used. I have even tried to seeked help from people around my neigbourhood - Nobody seems to really know too.
My question were, what does Core 2 Duo really do? I know it's a faster processor(?). But how does it actually works? I asked this question because - it seems that only one of my core 2 duo is working very hard. Always the second one. The first one will always stays on 5% (if not mistaken) forever eventhough the second one reached up to 100% and struggling. Why is that? Wasn't it suppose to divide their work load automatically?
I don't even remember now where did I get that reading before already.
Have tried 'System Profiler', but I can't seems to find it anyway now.
    Please guide me if possible.
Is there anywhere I can monitor my Core 2 Duo in action status?
And how can I have the first core to show me some sign of it is doing it's part too.
Or maybe I just got the whole Core 2 Duo idea wrongly?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Jon Gan

    Hello All,
Oopss, Didn't know it only allows one 'Helpful' star at a time. Sorry guys.
Anyway, I found all your suggestion helpful.
I understand now that the Core 2 Duo are somehow smart/intelligence enough to divide work load among themself and cannot or best not to have it done manually by user. However, it just the matter of if the software/application are compatible to it or not. Or otherwise, the application running are available to such features or not as for Core 2 Duo to have it divided its work load.
But still, is there anyway we can know which software? Or when Core 2 Duo does it magic?
I understand we should be able to see it from the CPU usage from Activity Monitor.app or otherwise, IStat Pro widgets. But, I just don't really know how to study the graphs there.
What I usually gets from Activity Monitor or IStat Pro are as follow:
    User:
    System:
    Nice:
    Idle:
and lastly the graph - which I really have no idea what are all those stand for.
Care to run me through roughly if possible? Thanks.
    Sorry for the inconveniences.
So in the end, I was hoping to find (if there's any) by any chances there's a software that can read the 2 cores reading in - perhaps percentage wise? or a easier understanding format which you can recommend?
For example: In Windows XP, there's a software called *Everest Home Edition* which I can read the 2 cores in percentage format. This allows me to easily monitor the cores in action while at the same time I was working on my computer. Although, I didn't really find anything yet cause I would rather just stick to Mac OS X Tiger. However, what surprise me from my testing towards the 2 cores during than period of time was that - One core always stays on 0% while the second core reaches up to 100%. They doesn't seems to divide their work flow. This is the first time I owned a Core 2 Duo processor - so with that exprerience, I really have no idea what does Core 2 Duo really do if one core is not helping the second core with it's work load. (beside being faster like everyone else said). heh heh heh Silly me right? heh heh heh
So back to Mac. I guess now, the best choice to monitor it is by using the Activity Monitor(?).
Under the CPU tab, there's a CPU Usage graph that splits into two - is that the 2 cores? The one on top is core #1 and the one of the bottom is core #2? Please guide.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Jon Gan

  • Lion OS to ever support the older Intel Core Duo processors?

Does Apple Lion OS have any intention of supporting the older Intel Core Duo processors?  If not, then doesn't that mean there's a lot of Mac's that are going to be left behind?  Does Apple plan to do anything else for these Mac's?

Intel Core Duos are older machines - the last one was discontinued in September 2006 (if I remember correctly); that means the newest of them is about 5 1/2 years old - a lifetime for electronics.
As for Apple having any plans for these older machines: first, we are not allowed to speculate here, but I can't see anyone supporting or doing anything for a computer that age.
