Does daisy chaining affect assessment results?

I need to break a large Captivate 4 project file into smaller segments. If I daisy chain the resulting segments, what will happen to the assessment results from the first one or two segments. Currently, assessment results from all slides appear as a cumulative total after the quiz at the end of the tutorial. If I split the tutorial and daisy chain the segments, will the total assessment results still include assessment results from all slides in the daisy chain?
And what happens to the table of contents? Will every segment of the daisy chain have the same table of contents? If so, how would I update the table of contents if I needed to?

If you daisy chain a project then each of the projects will be a separate instance with no communication between them. Basically all assesments, TOC etc will only apply to that particular project so you wont be able to get a cummulative total for your assesments in the last chapter.
If you have access to a Flash programmer you could create functionality to store the quiz results from each chapter and then bring them all together in the last chapter.
As for the TOC there is no joy. Perhaps you could use the Aggregator function instead but the functionality and level of detail is not the same as with the TOC.

  • Does daisy-chaining a Belkin Mac-compatible hub affect performance?

I've had a 7-port Belkin hub plugged into my 13" Macbook and before that a 15" Powerbook for several years and have been pretty satisfied with it. I'd like to get a new one and connect it to the original (or vice-versa). Does anyone know if doing that would affect performance of any kind? (Upload times, wireless mouse interference, etc.?) Belkin doesn't seem to have anyone who knows much--the rep I talked to didn't even know Belkin made a hub that works with Mac.
Thanks for any information anyone has.

That makes sense. My old hub is 2.0, so it should work with the new one I want, which is also 2.0.
I don't know how much power I might ever be using at one time. have a wired keyboard and wireless or USB mice, and at times I probably download something into my printer buffer while at the same time backing up to an external hard drive or flash stick. But I don't think I'd ever be doing more than that, and the present 7-port hub seems to have no problem handling jobs requiring 4 ports at once.
I really just wanted the second hub because the present one is at the back of the desk behind the dictionary (cord is too short to reach the front!), and I'm tired of trying to insert devices into the USB ports without knocking the dictionary off its stand. I figured that plugging a second 7-port hub into the first one would allow me to have a hub at the front of the desk and give me a few extra ports as a bonus. If you have a better idea, I'd be happy to hear it! Meanwhile, thanks so much for the information, and the fast response.

  • Does daisy chaining Firewire 800 drives reduce performance?

    Hello,
Based on the recommendation of a very knowledgable Apple Cert. Instructor, I learnt that a very good drive configuration for editing in FCPX is to have 3 separate drives: Boot disk, Events, and Projects. The reason, I suppose, for having the Events and Projects folders on separate drives is because FCPX is constanty reading and writing data into those 2 databases, which would mean that having both databases on one drive strains performance since the drive would have to write all edit changes constantly in the projects folder while reading video footage constantly from the events folder.
That sounds logical so I'll accept it as being true, but here's the intro to my question: I have an iMac (see the specs below) with 1 firewire 800 port, and my extra 2 drives would need to be daisy chained (FW800) to share the 1 port.
    1. Does the communication to the two drives suffer for being daisy chained into 1 port, i.e. is the 800Mb/s transfer rate halved between the 2 drives or is full 800 to both at the same time?
    2. Does the computer handle the communication with the 2 FW drives via that 1 port evenly so that I takes full advantage of having  separate physical disks dedicated to just reading and writing Media and Project data?
It might seem riduculous to go to such Media Management extremes, but FCPX seems to struggle when I get deep into a project and the performance gets sluggish. that's why I'm trying to optimize the workflow.
    Thank you,
    Reynaldo
    System specs: 27" iMac (mid 2010) 2.8Ghz quad-core i5, 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon 5750 with 1GB GDDR5 Memory
    External Drives: LaCie D2 Quadra 2TB 7200RPM and Lacie D2 Quadra 3TB 7200RPM

If all the devices in the chain are FW800 then there will be no degradation.
If any of the devices in the chain are FW400 then complete chain drops to FW400 performance.

  • Does daisy chained firewires make performance drop?

Hi all, just looking for a quick answer by someone who knows what they're talking about. Will daisy chaining firewire 400 drives together on a Mac or PC create a performance drop? I'm editing a project using 2 daisy chained drives at the moment with media on both. My co-worker claims it will slow down the computer's access to the media, I say it won't. Neither of us has any hard evidence and a quick google search doesn't turn up anything substantial either. What I'm looking for is hard engineering evidence. Thanks!

The firewire protocol allows for 63 or so devices to be chained together.
Running two FW400 devices should not be an issue. I've run up to a eight on chain in the past.
Still, be aware that some drives do not play well with other drives on the same chain. I have a G-RAID 500GB drive that tanks when there is another drive connected. It runs fine when it is the only drive on the bus.
If you are curious, go to the AJA website and find the "AJA System Test" app. It is a disk drive throughput test. Connect your drives in various configurations and see what happens.
    Good luck,

  • Why does daisy-chaining a Mini-DisplayPort monitor in a Thunderbolt chain cause overscan issues?

I have the awkward 2011 MacBook Pro with a single Thunderbolt port and no USB3.  I very frequently use it connected to my HP 2311x LED Monitor.  For the very first time, today I placed a external Thunderbolt drive in-between my MacBook Pro and the HP 2311x.  This causes the image to severely overscan.  Correcting it by using the underscan option in the display settings significantly reduces image quality.

    Two more of interest:

I have a Mac Pro tower (OSX version 10.6.3) with two internal Hard Drives, each one 2TB.
I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But cannot back up because it tells me there is not enough space.
I have more than 3Tbs to store to the new TC.
Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?

Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
No, you cannot link to produce a single large partition.
But you can have two separate backup jobs.. and use each partition. That is hard on TM but you can easily get a different backup software for it.
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
In TM you do a different setup and exclude the other drive.
But it is better to use an alternative software IMHO.
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
You would need to use a network drive of more than 4TB .. it would also take forever. This is just wrong way to do it. Although you can buy a NAS that will work with Time Machine and load it with disks 16TB is possible.. if you can get a second mortgage.. the fragile nature of TM on 3rd party devices.. would leave me in cold sweat if anything went wrong.
TM is excellent at keeping incremental backups of files that keep changing.. as such you should use TM to backup your OS disk and main user directory.. exclude all files and directories that never change. Back them up separately.
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?
Yes, that is a much better idea. You want to store photos safely and you want to store them in multiple places. If you have multiple TB of photos, dedicate a couple of disks to the backup. ie have at least two copies.. not in backup format.. in straight copy format if possible.. so you can keep one of the disks offsite.
I would be using your MacPro internal disk access, to place the disk onto sata bus and do the copy disk to disk direct. Or even buy esata card.. or sata to esata converter cable so you can use esata box. That will beat any other transfer speed except thunderbolt for which you would need third mortgage. (The MORT in mortgage is significant).
The great jurist Sir Edward Coke, who lived from 1552 to 1634, has explained why the term mortgage comes from the Old French words mort, "dead," and gage, "pledge." It seemed to him that it had to do with the doubtfulness of whether or not the mortgagor will pay the debt.

  • Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor does not work when daisy chaining firewire devices

    Hi,
I just purchased the Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor for my new late 2012 iMac.
It works when connecting a single firewire device, but when I daisy chain another drive, the first drive disconnects and nothing mounts.
I am trying a Hitachi G-Raid and a couple of WD My Studio II hard drives. They all work when connected directly to the adaptor, but not when more than one drive if daisy chained with firewire.
Has anyone got firewire daisy-chaining working with a thunderbolt adaptor? (just to clarify I am not refering to thunderbolt daisy chaining, as the adaptor is an end-of-chain thunderbolt device).
    Thanks

    Yikes, that's sad to hear.
I can't test it, no TB here, but are all these drives self AC powered, ie. no bus powered drives?

  • Problem with daisy chaining HDDs and Time Machine

I have purchased 2 WD My Passport Studio FireWire 2TB HDDs which I have daisy chained to my MacBook Pro.  One I have assigned to be the Time Machine backup the other as an additional data drive.  Both are formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I setup Time Machine to backup both the internal and external drive.  When I set it up everything looked OK in Time Machine Preferences, but the daisy chained data drive displayed on the desktop with the Time Machine backup logo and the backup drive displayed as a standard FireWire data drive. However the backup worked successfully and backed everything up to the correct backup drive.
I have since established the following:
    1.  If both drives are daisy chained and then plugged in, the data drive shows up with the backup icon and the backup drive shows as a data drive, but Time Machine backs up to the correct drive.  This is the case regardless of what order the drives are daisy chained.
    2.  If the backup drive is plugged in on its own it shows up correctly with the backup drive icon.  If the data drive is then daisy chained to the backup drive both drives show up as backup drives.  Time Machine backs up to the correct backup drive.
    3. If the data drive is plugged in on its own it shows up incorrectly as the backup drive.  If the backup drive is then daisy chained to the data drive the backup drive shows as a normal FireWire data drive. But Time Machine still backs up to the correct drive.  Exactly the same as case 1 but the drives have been daisy chained after connecting to the MacBook Pro and the result is the same.
    4. However if the data drive is plugged in on its own, showing up as the backup drive, Time Machine backs up to the data drive incorrectly.
The first three points are just annoying as the drive icons do not display correctly, although it does indicate to me that Time Machine is confused.  But what I don't like is the fact that I can't just use the external data drive without the backup drive being present.
How do I overcome this problem?

Launch Disk Utility and select one of the volumes in question. Click the Info button in the toolbar. In the Information window that opens, note the Universal Unique Identifier. Do the same with the other volume. Are the identifiers the same?

  • Daisy Chaining External HD's Question

I'm wondering what the best way to setup a few external hard drives with the fireface 800, and the correct order.
I have 3 External hard drives
2 HD's (500GB and 1000GB) dedicated to Samples and loops
1 HD (500GB) for recording logic pro projects directly
    And a Fireface 800 interface
Each has 2 firewire 800 ports and 1 firewire 400 ports
    I then have a 20" Imac with 1 firewire 800, and 400 port
1- Is it okay to daisy chain all these on the imacs 800 port?
2- What is the best order to put these in? Interface first or last? Sample drives before the recording drives? Is there a preferred route?
3- Would it be best to get a firewire hub?
4- Or what does everybody else do? Any guides or help would be much appreciated
    Message was edited by: floatdownaliffy

Recording to a external audio drive is fine. It is in fact RECOMMENDED unless you have a second internal drive to record to as the internal bus is faster but is better than recording to drive your system is booted from.
If you can keep it all FW800 then that is better than using FW400 & FW800. There is only one FireWire bus on the system and it is only as fast as the slowest device. So a FW400 device will slow your FW800 devices down to half speed! Some interfaces work with hubs while others don't so check with RME about using the Fireface 800 with a hub before buying one.
With that in mind the best way to know what will work is to test the different configurations and see what kind of results you get. Ideally direct is always better cannot always be done.

  • Daisy-chaining remote object calls

If you want to get data from a series of CFCs using remote
object, and each call depends on data received from the previous
call, you have to daisy-chain the functions making the calls,
otherwise there is no way to guarantee that the data is available
in time (in practice it is never available in time) because the
    main thread races on regardless.
Now if you want to refresh parts of the data, or you want to
get a different set of data from one or more of the same CFCs, you
either can use the same functions and set up a different set of
daisy-chains with multiple boolean tests to see which chain of
links should be being followed ( and this ends up something akin to
a four-dimensional Hampton Court maze), or you have to duplicate
the remote calls over and over again in different sets of functions
and resultHandlers. Either way you end up with a horrible mess.
Is there any way to write a class that can suspend the main
thread, pending a remote call listener sending a resume main thread
    event.
The other way that would work (though this would not be as
good) is to change addEventListener, so that you can pass arguments
    into the resultHandler.
Does anyone have any ideas that could lead to a solution to
this problem? It's giving me gray hair.
    Doug

"suspend the main thread, pending a remote call.." No. Can't
    be done.
..."pass arguments into the resultHandler..." Yes, this is
done using the AsyncToken. (ACT pattern)
The send() methods returns an AsyncToken object. You can use
this dynamic object to add almost anything you want to the token,
including strings, and functions (google the term "closure").
As I am still not comfortable with anonymous functions, I
like to pass strings. I pass an identifier, which I can use in a
switch statement to determine the next step. Sometimes I pass a
"nextStep" string to define finer grain conditionality.
I use a single dataService object and result handler function
    for all calls.

  • Daisy chaining W8960N routers

Can someone please help me understand daisy chaining W8960N routers.
Setup: Router 1 (R1 = 192.168.1.1) replaces HH3 without problem and an ethernet output from it goes from R1 to Router 2 (in this case R2 = 192.168.1.10).
    1. Does R2 need a reboot after EVERY change or is there some guideline to when "Save & Apply" is adequate without a reboot?
    2. If I disconnect R2 and make a change e.g. NAT enable/disable or change routing and then reconnect to R1, does R1 accept the new settings immediately or does it remember the old settings (in other words: Does R1 need a reboot when changes are only made to R2)?
    3. Is R2 PPPoE or IPoE (or IoW)?
    4. Does R2 see "the outside world" as its WAN port such that R1 is the IP address (or IP gateway address - [ these confuse me]) or does it see the outside world as R1's connection to BT modem. If the latter case does R2 still need to supply ISP userid and pswd?
    5. DNS - Should R2 DNS point to the outside world servers or just to R1 (192.168.1.1) or does it make no difference.
    6. There is consensus that only one router should have DHCP (R1) however most sites say that NAT must be disabled on R2. Steve Gibson's site explains how NAT on router 2 adds to security. Should it be on or off? Same with SPI firewall?
    7. Finally, would R3's config be identical to R2 (except it's IP address).
    Thanks

    1. Does R2 need a reboot after EVERY change or is there some guideline to when "Save & Apply" is adequate without a reboot?
Mine needs a reboot every time
    2. If I disconnect R2 and make a change e.g. NAT enable/disable or change routing and then reconnect to R1, does R1 accept the new settings immediately or does it remember the old settings (in other words: Does R1 need a reboot when changes are only made to R2)?
    R2 doesn't affect R1 at all.
    3. Is R2 PPPoE or IPoE (or IoW)?
R2 doesn't have it's WAN port connected, so it doesn't matter what you choose
    4. Does R2 see "the outside world" as its WAN port such that R1 is the IP address (or IP gateway address - [ these confuse me]) or does it see the outside world as R1's connection to BT modem. If the latter case does R2 still need to supply ISP userid and pswd?
R2 doesn't have the WAN port connected, so ignored.
    5. DNS - Should R2 DNS point to the outside world servers or just to R1 (192.168.1.1) or does it make no difference.
R2 doesn't have the WAN connected so ignored.
    6. There is consensus that only one router should have DHCP (R1) however most sites say that NAT must be disabled on R2. Steve Gibson's site explains how NAT on router 2 adds to security. Should it be on or off? Same with SPI firewall?
You must disable DHCP on all routers except R1 - Only 1 DHCP server is required.
    7. Finally, would R3's config be identical to R2 (except it's IP address).
    Yes
Most importantly, disable QSS on all routers as this is a big security risk - it allows your wifi to be hacked.

  • Wiebetech bus-powered FW800 external & daisy chaining...

Please, only people that ALREADY OWN & USE the Wiebetech drive reply. Thanks.
I just bought one - the 500GB. I have three questions:
    1) From your experience in running this unit, can I use it on only bus power, in a daisy chain with another FW800 drive if the other drive has a power adapter?
    2) What if I have a FW400 drive also plugged in, and the FW400 is connected to the FW400 port and has it's own power adapter?
    3) Also, does including a FW400 drive in the loop AFTER the FW800 Wiebetech have any adverse affect on the FW800 speed or it's bus-power?
It sounds like the draw for the 500GB on us power will be running questionably close to the max output on the port. So I'm trying to do some homework ahead of time to see if I might run into any anomalies. Thanks.

I wonder how many bus powered Firewire driives I can daisy-chain.
Use a powered Firewire/USB hub so there is enough power to power the port powered devices.
What happened is port powered devices are cheaper and many people opt for the lower price than the ones with their own power supplies, so it creates a problem and computer makers had to turn off ports drawing too much power from the comptuer, so people have to run out and get powered hubs.

  • Yet another question on daisy chaining...

After having thoroughly sifted through prior discussion on the subject, as well as looked at the online tutorial (gooberguides) and other sources, I am compelled to come back and ask this question. This is Captivate 5.
Here is my scenario, and it seems to be quite simple. I have a large project, which I want to break up into smaller ones. This is so that users don't have to sit and wait for it to load from the LMS before they can start. I need to have SCORM reporting, so that users can leave and come back to where they were. I don't think I can resolve this using Multi-SCO Packager, as the resulting package doesn't appear as a single module, but as several modules within a single package. Aggregator wouldn't quite work, since it forces that TOC, which I don't want to have.
One more wrinkle in the whole thing is that I have my own TOC, which is on the first slide of Module no. 2, to which I have a link from most other (subsequent) modules.
I have successfully daisy-chained all of this using the online guide mentioned above. I used 'Open URL or file'. At first, I tried pointing to the SWF file for the next module, but when I deployed the final package, my browser (Firefox) wanted to download the next module, instead of playing it back in the browser window. Pointing to HTML file resolved that. My links back to the Module 2 (TOC) work fine. It took me a while to figure out why none of the linking wouldn't work at first. It only started working when I removed spaces from file names (this I couldn't find anywhere in documentation, and stumbled upon by myself).
My only problem (a deal breaker) is with SCORM tracking. When I publish with reporting turned on, the following happens: first module plays back throughout (all five slides). At the end, it loads the second module. However, when second module starts playing, it either freezes on load, or skips right past first 5 slides and starts playing from slide no. 6. This is telling me that the LMS is treating this as if the user has closed the session after reaching slide 5, then immediately re-opened it, so the LMS is sending him straight to slide 6, except this is now Module 2, and not Module 1. Meanwhile, user has never touched anything and has actually never left the session. Sure enough, if I leave the session at, for example, Module 2, slide 7, when I come back, LMS will be stuck trying to load Module 1, slide 7 (which doesn't exist; my Module 1 has only 5 slides).
So, apparently, simple daisy-chaining doesn't work well with SCORM reporting. Meanwhile, Aggregator (and Multi-SCO Packager) aren't doing it for me, as they force TOC to show individual modules.
Does anyone have any ideas how to work around these obstacles?

    Hi,

at the moment im using a white macbook (2008 i think) with Fire wire 400 going to the g-tech at FW 800 then out of the g-tech with 800 to the duet at FW 400.
does anyone else have this problem and perhaps know a solution.
will a FW powered hub work???
apogee were not much help saying it might work but, might not more or less. they did say try use drives with the oxford chip set as this usually produced the best results for daisy chaining.
    any help appreciated.
    thanks

    Oh my,
I hope it works out for you, cause In a few days I'll have the exact setup but a different Mac Laptop. (Gtech Drive on it's way delivering)
I've read multiple threads on daisy chaining as there seems to be not that much information floating around, but from the looks of it seemed like it was fairly reliable.
When exactly do you get spinning? is it on plugin?
    Does each thing individually work?
I'm very much interested, and will have to test it over here when the HDD comes in.
    You're saying
    Duet(FW400) -> GTech(FW800) -> MacBook(FW800) right?
