Does Directory Server 5.1 Work on XP

Dumb question, but I am having trouble installing Directory Server 5.1 on a windows XP box.
I am getting the following errors:
1.Setup is Unable to store information in the LDAP Directory.
2.Unable to Create Administration Server Configuration.
3. Could not authenticate LDAP connection, "Unknown Error".
4.Setups post-install mode failed for the subcomponent admin belong to the component admin. Do you wish to continue.
In short a lot of errors. It worked fine on one of my windows 2000 boxes.
Please help. I am sorry to sound a bit dumb, but I am a programmer LDAP enabling an application, not a sytem or directory administrator.

As far as I know XP is a workstation OS not a server OS.
Directory SERVER is only supported on NT 4 and Windows 2000 (besides all kind of Unixes of course).

What does Directory Server offer over OpenLDAP

We need to deploy an LDAP solution that out of the gate has HA functionality in a mission critical environment.
I was wondering what Directory Server offers over OpenLDAP and other LDAP deployments.
We will not be using this for authentication, but merely a lookup to see if an account exists. Our mail servers will query LDAP to confirm an account exists before accepting the mail. So we will be doing 5,000 - 50,000 queries an hour (with a 10-15 minute caching) against a pair of LDAP servers to query if the email record exists on our system. Down the road we may add other functionality but right now the requirement is very simple but up time is critical as this can be a point of failure for incoming mail.

Directory Server Just Won' Work after reinstalling:(

I have been reading the posts on this form in the hope of getting my problem fixed. But no luck. So here is my situation.
Os: Windows 2003 SP1
I installed DS 5.2 to my server three days back and had it configured to use with Cognos BI. It was working perfectly untill someone changed the PC Admin password. And it stopped working after that. I have tried to reinstall it after uninstalling. And It just wont start. I have tried everything that has been mentioned on this forum.
etc/host thingy and cleaning the registrey and all the things.
But at the end of the Sun ONE DS installation I get the following errors.

Directory Server scanner not working

I've having a problem where my computer lists under the Directory Server scanner are empty.
I've set up the ARD groups properly in Open Directory etc.

iAS must be Nortel LDAP Schema compatible and I'm not sure if NDS(Novell
Directory Server) is compatible. What I'm trying to understand is if you

accessing the users or if you are having trouble in the installation.

By looking at the error message, it seems like the "server.principal" and

with sp4, although the ldaprealm.properties file has somewhat different
format.
Did anyone have similar problems with sp8?

BEA support just gave me the solution.
They told me to uncomment out the line
server.alias=netscape
in the ldaprealm.properties file
And I am able to start weblogic with my NIS

Old Netscape console 4.2 not working properly with new Directory Server 5.2

After successfully installing Messaging Server 5.2 and applying patch 2, the old Netscape Console doesn't work properly, I tried running the script which is given in the link

which hobbles the server by creating a set of dummy jar files in order for the directory server console not making any changes on the messaging server. At first I got these messages:
Failed to install a local copy of msgadmin52.jar or one of its supporting files: not a ZIP file (END header not found)
I got the same message for these 2 files:
admserv42.jar
msgadmin52.jar
After that I made real dummy jar files using a zero-length file I created with touch and I got these messages:
class com.netscape.management.admser.AdminServer not found
After that I erased all the files created by the script and I get these messages:
failed to install a copy of admserv51.jar or one of its supporting files: null
failed to install a copy of msgadmin.jar or one of its supporting files: msgadmin52.jar not found at http://192.168.10.205:5001/
and for admserv42.jar I get the same message
Does anyone have a clue on what to do next??

The thing is that the netscape console 4.5 won't work properly with messaging server 5.2, and the directory server console is not working properly for the directory server. I already know the limitations about these consoles since it is explained in the doc where the procedure of migrating from a 4.x directory server to 5.1. I

10.3.9 clients not working with 10.4.9 open directory server

I have a 10.4.9 server running open directory and managing about 20 10.4.9 clients. I am trying to have it manage our remaining 10.3.9 clients, but for whatever reason, I cannot seem to get the 10.3 clients to "attach" to the server.
I have the 10.3 clients set up in a computer list on the server, and in directory access I have it set to "get ldap mappings from server". At one point, it was suggested to me that I have the clients "get ldap mappings from open directory server". I tried this, and manually set the search base suffix. My search base suffix was "dc=example,dc=local". I even tried doing "cn=config,dc=example,dc=local" (where in both cases example.local was replaced with my real DNS name). Any suggestions on what else I could try to get this to work?

That's the odd thing though. I've done this with 10.4 no problem. Settings always worked. For some reason though, even though the clients are able to login using a network user, none of the preference settings sync.
For example - I always put a loginwindow message on as a sort of "test" to see if preferences are being set. If that works, then I rarely have a problem. No matter what I do, though, I cannot get the loginwindow message to display on the 10.3 clients. It works really well on 10.4, but not at all on 10.3. I've tried this on multiple 10.3 machines, as well, (and they're both based on different system images) but it still doesn't work. When I get back to work on Friday, I'll have to see if preferences will work for network users; that's the one thing I haven't tried.
Other than dumping the directoryaccess preferences, is there another preference setting that could be dumped on the client that may make it grab prefs from the server?

Yes Directory Proxy Server 6.0 works with DS 5.1SP3.
DPS uses LDAPv3 protocol and works with most of the LDAPv3 compliant servers. It has been tested with Sun DS, Active Directory, OpenLDAP and OpenDS.
Some specific feature may require the support of the Proxied Authorization Control (RFC 3829), but that's it.

Does the Server Monitor work on PowerPC based machine (w/o LOM)?

I tried using the Server Monitor locally on a PowerPC G4 machine which has 10.5.1 server installed. I always get a "Failed to connect to server" error message, except if I try 127.0.0.1 with the original local admin, then I would get a "User and or Password" error.
Strangely, the username of the admin is M999, but if i type in "M999" as username, I would still get a "Failed to connect to server" error, while if I use "m999" as username, I get a user name password error. Either way, I couldn't use Server Monitor.
So I am wondering whether Server Monitor support machines w/o LOM at all? Is there an trick I should know about?

There is no trick you need to know. Its really quite simple, Server Monitor only works with XServes. Apple added LOM capability when they rolled out the Intel XServe.

Does a 10.7 client work with a 10.6.8 server with portable home directories??

Subject says it all. I need to move to 10.7 on the clients because I need XCode. But 10.7 Server seems dumbed-down, brittle and bug-ridden, so I'd rather stay at 10.6.8 server for the time being. I know already from some off site users of my server that mail works fine between 10.7 clients and 10.6.8 server. But what about mobile accounts and portable home directories? That is a very important feature for me.

It seems to work. Slow and I have seen it hang at logout once (had to force shutdown the machine), maybe because I had two clients open at the same time.

How do I bind to directory server with SSL and authentication?

I'm running Lion Server 10.7.3, Open Directory master. In Open Directory/Settings/LDAP, I've checked the box to Enable SSL and selected a (self-signed) certificate. In Policies/Binding, I've checked the box to Enable Authenticated Directory Binding.
Testing with a client computer on which Snow Leopard has been freshly installed and fully updated, I went to System Prefs/Accounts to bind to the new directory server. The good news is, the binding was successful, and when the client initiates an AFP connection with the server, it uses Kerberos, creating a ticket as expected. (Which doesn't work with Lion clients, alas, but that's a seperate matter.)
Here are the problems:
1) It looks like the binding did not use SSL. By which I mean that when I opened Directory Utility and examined the LDAPv3 entry, the SSL checkbox was not checked. (If I then check the box, everything looks fine until I restart the client, after which I have a red dot. So I'm guessing that checking the box does nothing until after restart, and that it breaks the binding.)
2) I was never prompted to authenticate for the directory binding.
So I get that literally I'm *enabling* SSL and Authenticated Directory Binding, but it seems like the defaults are to bind without SSL or authentication, and there's no obvious-to-me way to force the binding to use those things. How do I do that?
What I'd really like to do is *require* SSL and Authenticated Directory Binding. I want this because my belief (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if authentication is required to bind to the server, no one will be able to bind to my server without my permission, and that SSL offers a more secure connection to my server than not-SSL. How do I require these things, or do I not really want to?
