If it did, we would all still be on iTunes 1.0.

  • When I update to the newer version of itunes, deleted music shows back up in my libary?

This has happened several times. I update my Itunes to the newer version, then all the songs I have deleted from Itunes shows back up in my libary. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?

What version are you using now? Less than 5.0? Settings>General>About>Version. You can check there.
If you are using the original iPad you can only update to iOS 5.1.1 now. The iPad2 and the latest iPad can be updated to iOS 6. But this will work no matter what version you have right now.
Connect your iPad to your computer with the cable and launch iTunes. Click on your iPad name under devices on the left sidebar. Click on the summary tab in the iTunes window on the right. Click on Check For Update.
When you connect the iPad to iTunes, iTunes should alert you that there is an update available.

  • Will upgrading to new version of itunes delete my last iPad backup?

will upgrading to a newest version itunes delete my last iPad backup? I am currently running 10.5.0.142 and just installed iOS6 to my iPad2 and was prmpted to do a restore.  Only problem is ituntes says I can't sync up my back up until I install the newest version of itunes.

no, updating versions does not delete your current library

  • My computer tells me that i need a newer version of itunes but it is already updated and will not connect to my iphone

Why wont my phone connect to itunes when i plug it up to my computer? I have all of the updated versions on my phone and itunes.

What version of iTunes and what version of the OS are you running?
You can click the apple >> about this mac for the OS version.
Click the itunes menu >> about itunes for that version.

  • Will getting new version of itunes delete my current library?

i'm afraid to update my itunes to the newest version. but, right now, itunes does not recognize my nano...at all. i've updated the nano & restored it. still, it won't work.
    any suggestions?

no, updating versions does not delete your current library

  • How can I locate my iTunes library files. When I click on my itunes icon the message appears, "The file iTunes Library.itl." cannot be found because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."

How can I locate my iTunes library files?  When I click on my iTunes icon rather than my iTunes files I receive, " The file iTunes Library.itl." cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."  I have already tried to update my iTunes program.

Had same problem and solved it without having to reinstore any music or movies:
    1. Delete old Library file
    2. Go to the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder and copy one of the earlier files - note, they have a date extension, e.g. 'iTunes Library 2011-11-01'.
    3. Paste this file in your iTuners folder and rename file by removing the date extension -  'iTunes Library'
You should have all your music and paylists in tact, unless it was a really old previous file.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

    Hello there, RJ Quick.
I've located the following Knowledge Base article that might be the information you're looking for:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12165
The following section may be of help:
Change where imported files are stored
Choose iTunes > Preferences and click Advanced.
Click Change and select a new location for your files. From now on, new songs and other items you import will be stored in the new location. Songs you’ve already imported stay in their current location. To go back to storing imported files in the iTunes folder, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and click Reset.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

Since you cannot download iTunes on an iPod touch, this would not seem to be the correct forum for this question. I'd suggest you post full details of your problem in either the iTunes for Mac forum or the iTunes for Windows forum, as applicable to your system.
