Does external PS/2 mouse w/scrolling wheel conflict w/Trackpoint?

I've got an x31 running Windows XP pro SP3.  Everything is fine.
But when I plug in an external mouse into the PS/2 port of my media slice or docking station:
  - the scrolling wheel on the mouse (logitech or sony) doesn't work
  - the psysical movement required to move the cursor across the screen is silly
(nearly 10", vs 3 or 4 with a USB mouse)
Ideas??

OK, I pieced together the solution.  This probably applies to all thinkpads.
The PS/2 port, to properly recognize hardware, needs the system to be power-cycled.  So, if you already have a system up and plug a PS/2 mouse in...it will only be partially recognized.  The amount of physical movement required to move the mouse is excessive.  Buttons might not work.  Scrolling wheel won't work.
But if you power cycle the system, the external PS/2 mouse will work fine and the Trackpoint will be disabled (for as long as the external mouse is plugged in).
So my problem:  I was putting my laptop into the docking station and ultrabase but I wans't power-cycling.  I was just ejecting, putting the system in suspend, etc.
The SOLUTION:  when putting your laptop into the docking station or ultrabase with a PS/2 mouse, hibernate the system first.  Since the system is powered down, when you turn it on it will detect the PS/2 mouse and all will be well.
I have no idea if this applies to Win2K, Vista, or 7...just to WinXP.  Confirmed this on two separate x31s and two different brands of PS/2 mice.
To answer the question I originally started with -- yes, the trackpoint does conflict with external PS/2 mice....but the system manages the conflict just fine as long as you power-cycle the hardware after hooking up the external mouse.
Some of this applies to serial mice (no, they haven't gone away from my basement...), but none of it applies to truly plug-and-play devices like USB or bluetooth mice.

  • Lenovo Bluetooth Laser mouse 41u5009 scroll wheel not working in Virtual PC

Firstly this is not a type I have a 41U5009 that is the model number printed on the bottom of the mouse and this mouse came direct from Lenovo with my T61p notebook.  For some reason to get drivers for this mouse you cannot simply type in the model number on the Lenovo site as it does not recognize it as a valid model number.
My issue is that the driver I have or the mouse does not allow the scroll wheel to work under MS virtual pc 2007.  I am running Vista 64 bit on the T61P laptop and the virtual pc I am running xp.  If I plug in other mice such as MS cordless mini mouse or HP standard mouse the wheel from those mice works in the VM.  But the wheel on the Lenovo mouse does not work, this makes me believe it is the Lenovo mouse that is the issue.  I have tried using the Lenovo mouse on another pc ( a clone pc) and have the same issue with the wheel not working.  I should point out that in the parent OS the wheel on the Lenovo mouse works fine.  I should also point out that in the VM every other function of the mouse works fine, it is just the wheel part that does not get recognized.

Sorry, but pressing F7 did not do anything I could see in the mobile browser. I had to check with the desktop browser to see what it was supposed to do, and I don't think this caret browsing function exists in the mobile version.
Also tried installing the latest non-beta mobile FIrefox alongside the beta, without syncing anything, and the nonfunctionality of mouse scrolling is present in that one, too. Am considering giving up on mobile Firefox on at least this device.
Note: in case this information is useful, the mouse scrolling works on the Firefox start page with the thumbnails for most used links, but not on any other pages.

  • Mighty Mouse bluetooth: scroll wheel in Vista 64 bit doesn't work

I Installed Vista 64 bit on my Mac Pro.
My bluetooth mighty mouse has been recognized as an hid mouse. It works but the scroll wheel.
I tested on osx and it works, so it is not dirty or broken.
I tried to install the drivers from my leopard dvd but I receive an error message during the installation.
I downloaded the bootcamp update for 64bit systems but when I try to install it, it tells me the software to be updated is missing.
I tried to use a recent leopard dvd a friend gave but it tells me that my system doesn't support 64 bit softwares (is a late 2007 Mac Pro).
Is there anyone who knows the answer?

You have to have a pre-2008 Mac Pro I take it.
(might want to include more in your profile)
First you need to install 64-bit drivers from Apple off 10.5.4 or later DVD or from a 2008 Mac Pro.
Might even be drivers for generic BT mice available somewhere??

I think you'll need to uninstall your current Apple services and device drivers, restart and then go with BC 2.x for 64-bit.

  • 10.4.9 Scroll Wheel Problem - using Safari with a mouse with scroll wheel.

Since installing 10.4.9 I have noticed that when on web sites with Safari, when using the scroll wheel on my Logitech MX1000 Laser cordless mouse (Jan 2005) with Logitech control Center 2.1.3 (latest), suddenly you can no longer scroll using the wheel, in fact the mouse becomes "Dead" (the trackpad, too), so you cannot use the scroll arrows either. You have to quit Safari and restart Safari. Unfortunately this has happened 1-2 times/day and only since installing 10.4.9....... MacBook (May 2006, first ones) 2 gHz RAM.
Any form you are filling-out -- not possible to send, since you cannot click the send button...
Has anyone seen this problem or similar mousing problems running 10.4.9?
    Thanks.
    Steve Schulte 19 March 2007

NOTE: I have just learned that the Logitech Control Center 2.1.3 is NOT compatible with Mac OS 10.4.9 but that Logitech is working on 2.1.4-- so if others are having a similar problem, then it is not your Mac!
Hopefully this will be out shortly--- and if anyone hears anything, kindly post.

  • Unable to scroll through pages of a PDF with mouse scroll wheel

I have identical computer setups at home and at my office (27" iMac running Yosemite, a Logitech mouse (M-BJ58), and Acrobat Pro XI). On my office Mac, every increment of the mouse's scroll wheel advances one page, but on my home Mac, I have to scroll the wheel several times before it advances to the next page, and then once it does, no amount of scrolling will make it advance any further in either direction. I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't figure out how to make the scrolling behavior at home match that of the office.
In Acrobat, Page Layout is set to Single Page and Zoom is set to Fit Page in both places. Any ideas?

Answer, no, I do not know the cause. Single web site problems are not either Safari or the operating system.
I seriously doubt if resetting the iPad will fix the problem. If you still have problems, contact Macy's tech support.

  • Might Mouse scroll wheel indesign

(oops I thought this category was "other" hardware products. Why isn't there a category for keyboards and mice??)
I want to thank Apple for being forward looking in all aspects of design, formost the input devises. The new keyboard is amazing. Thanks. The Mighty Mouse is the first decent Apple mouse since pre-G3 days. In fact it is a very nice mouse – for 2 months.
My Mighty Mouse stopped scrolling after 2 months of heavy use. I took it to the Genius Bar, they told me it was dirty and sprayed air into it. It worked great again for another 4 days. That was April. I've just learned to live without it since then – occasionally trying to spray air into it to no avail.
    I found this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1243940
which gives us a simple how-to on cleaning the mouse. I can figure that out myself.
Does anybody know how to break open the mighty mouse so I can actually clean it?
I am a very clean person. If it takes two months for me to clog up the scroll wheel, somebody else has got to have a solution? I fear any professionals who use a Mac day in and day out must be using a third party mouse. I've not had any problems with a third party optical mouse ever – after many years of use. My Mighty Mouse's scroll wheel is really terrible.
    My questions are:
    A) How do I open up the mighty mouse so I can clean it?
    B) Is there a third party mouse that scrolls left and right and connects via bluetooth?
    C) Is apple reinventing the wheel again? Seriously.
Okay, I had to vent. Better than throwing this thing against the wall.

    A) How do I open up the mighty mouse so I can clean it?
    You can't without breaking it.
    B) Is there a third party mouse that scrolls left and right and connects via bluetooth?
There are other scroll-ball mice (the only ones I know of that have dual-axis scroll), but they'll have the same problem though some might be easier to clean. As a possible help for the problem with your current mouse, perhaps this will help:
    http://theappleblog.com/2008/09/27/revive-your-mighty-mouse-scroll-ball/
    C) Is apple reinventing the wheel again?
Constantly. Apple has applied for a patent on a mouse with a touchpad rather than a mechanical ball, but whether such a product will ever make it to market is unknown.

  • Mighty Mouse Scroll Wheel

    Hi Gang
    How's everyone doin?
I suspect the tiny little button wheel in the middle of the mighty mouse is not working properly? I can get it to scroll upward, but not downward. And it does it's job as it goes from side to side. Just can't get it to scroll downward.
Time for a new mouse with scroll wheel?
BTW - went to system preferences everything's checked there correctly.
    Thanx guys

    Hi-
The scroll balls get gummed up with dirt and skin oil.
There are a few ways to clean it, as this search reveals:
    Clean Mighty Mouse.
Start with the paper strip tick, then move on to disassembly if necessary.

  • Mouse Scroll Wheel not working when iTunes is on secondary monitor

    Hi,
This is a pretty convoluted problem, but I run two monitors (from the one RADEON videocard) and it seems that the iTunes7 window won't recognize input from my mouse's scroll wheel when the window is positioned on my "secondary" monitor.
I know, it's weird, but it's the case.
I guess this counts more as a bug report than anything else, but I'm hoping something can be done about this soon!
    M

Good call. I can confirm that the scroll wheel works any time that your mouse is in a positive coordinate location, does not work in a negative coordinate location. It doesn't matter whether the window straddles the two monitors - only what the mouse coordinate is. This applies for left monitors and (not nearly as common) monitors on top.
This goes to show that it's generally a bad idea to rewrite your own scrolling windows - you're bound to introduce bugs for some combination of input/output devices.

  • Bug: scrolling with mouse scroll wheel while dragging tracks no longer works

After upgrading to Spotify for Mac 1.0.2.6, I can no longer use my mouse's scroll wheel while dragging tracks to a different position in a playlist. This is an important feature when working with long playlists. Steps to reproduce:Create a playlist that extends past the bottom of the windowClick and begin dragging the first song on the playlist downwardUse your mouse's scroll wheel to scroll the playlist down. It will not scroll.

    Hey ,
    Thanks for letting us know.
We don't have any update on this yet and we'll pass the information on to the right team.

  • Mighty Mouse scroll wheel support

Is it possible to use a Mighty Mouse's scroll wheel to scroll in Shake as in any other OS X program? It's not responding for me (nothing scrolls, and I have to manually drag the scroll bar up and down). Is there a fix for that? (Even better, can I also use the scroll wheel for panning around the node view, timeline, etc. instead of middle-click+dragging? That gets tedious.)

O~ho! I got it to work, actually. You can install SteerMouse (http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/) instead of Apple's driver, and you configure it so that, at least in Shake (it allows per-application configuration), the scroll wheel is set to "x scroll" instead of "acceleration scroll". Huzzah! Shake's interface is now a bit less awful!

  • Scrolling upwards with mouse scroll wheel behaves strange

    Hi,
I have a pretty plain installation that I have not done anything particular to configure the mouse or anything. It is just a plain Dell two button usb mouse with scroll wheel. That has been plugged in and seems to work ok, except the upward scrolling.
Scrolling down both fast and slow works ok.
When scrolling up it seems to not work completly as expected. The way I would describe it is that it mostly scrolls up, but at random intervals pops downward a bit then if you continue to scroll up it goes up again.
This happens in all programs that you can use the mouse wheel to scroll up and down with, such as Firefox or Eclipse.
Is this a bug, or something that is not configured right?

You'll never know. Life is unexpected
And please mark this as [Solve].
Noone cares to do this these days.

  • Logitech mouse scroll wheel broken in Lion?

After installing Lion, I can't scroll album-by-album in iTunes Cover Flow with my Logitech USB mouse's scroll wheel. If I flick it fast, it will scroll a few albums, but one click at a time never works.
"One click at a time" works in the Finder Cover Flow, and also in Safari.

I found this while looking for an answer for a friend. My Mouse preference pane has all the settings you'd expect but his is missing the "Move content in the direction of finger movement" setting. I've attached a screenshot of his settings below.

  • Change scroll wheel function?

Is it possible to change the what the scroll wheel does?
At the moment the scroll wheel zooms in and out horizontally in waveform mode.  That's great.  Then when I switch to multitrack, the scroll wheel switches to vertical zooming.  That seems counter intuitive to me.
Is there an option to change the scroll wheel function so that I can zoom in and out horizontally (timewise) on both waveform editor and in multitrack mode?
Would be so good....  Thank you!

In Multitrack view, the behavior depends on where the mouse cursor is placed.  If you use the scroll wheel while the cursor is over the track panel controls, then it will resize thet rack height.  If scrolling while over the tracks and clips themselves, it scrolls.  Similar behaviors occur when scrolling while hovering over the navigation bar or ruler bars in the interface.

  • Mouse 3 scroll [SOLVED]

In windows, while i was using firefox, i could click the mouse 3 (scroll wheel) to enable scrolling by moving the mouse.  I would like to enable that in linux, but i dont know how.  Have any of you guys gotten that to work?

I hate that thing, too. You can enable/disable that option through about:config. There should be an entry called "general.autoScroll" there and you can set it to "true" to enable it.
