Does facetime work w/ Ichat?

Hi,
No.
Face Time and iChat are two different apps.
They are similar in some respects but cannot be linked.

I want to video from our house MAC to my kids iTouch 4th gen (which has Facetime). How do I set up this relationship? OR will I have to use Skype to accomplish video chat?

iChat does not connect to FaceTime.
Easiest way to video with iPod touch iOS4.1 is to get a matching iPod touch and activate FaceTime on it. If you already have iPhone4, you can use it instead of the second iPod touch.
How do I set up this relationship?

Skype will video chat between computers, but not with iPod Touch or iPhone.

  • I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?

    Question:-
I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time or other portal and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?
    Answer:-
For a Name to work in iChat it has to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Only Apple IDs from the @mac.com ending names registered here  and the Mobileme (@Me.com ending) names are Valid with the AIM service as well as being Apple IDs
(I am still working on info about registering with iCloud at the moment but if this does give you an @Me.com email it may well be a valid AIM name as well)
    NOTES:-
The @mac.com page works by linking an external (Non Apple) email with a @mac.com name.
This External Email cannot be one linked to an Existing Apple ID (you have to use a second email or register at AIM )
The options at AIM are to use your existing email or create new name and link the existing only for Password recovery
MobileMe (@me.com ending names) were valid Emails addresses, Apple IDs AND a Valid AIM Screen Name
@mac.com names look like emails but are only Apple IDs and iChat/AIM Valid Screen Names.
The AIM registration page seems to be pushing you to register [email protected] This is relatively new and I have not followed through the pages to find out if it a valid AIM email (Previously you could register a name without an @whatever.com suffix)

    Question:-
So I have my current [email protected] email in iChat as I thought as I had linked that to an Apple ID it was a Valid iChat Name.  It keeps coming up with a UserName or Password Invalid message.  What do I do next ?
    Answer:-
    Open iChat
Go to the Menu under the iChat name in the Menu Bar and then Preferences and then Accounts in the new window.
Commonly written as iChat > Preferences > Accounts as directions/actions to take.
If it displays with a Yellow running name in the list you have a choice.
Either register it at AIM (I would use a different password to the ISP Login) and then change the password only in iChat  (It may take you to confirm any Confirmation email from AIM first) in iChat > Preferences > Accounts
Or you register a new Name at AIM (Or at @mac.com) and enter that (details below)
If you have a Blue Globe name  (@mac.com) that will not Login the chances are that it the password that is the issue.
Apple lets you create longer passwords than can be used with the AIM Servers.
Change the Password at iForgot to no more than 16 characters.
Then change the password in iChat as details above.
Adding a new Account/Screen Name in iChat (that is valid with the AIM servers)
    Open iChat if not launched.
Go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Click the Add ( + )  Button at the bottom of the list.
Choose in the top item drop down either @Mac.com or AIM depending on what you registered
Add the name (with @mac.com the software will add the @mac.com bit)
Add in the password.  (If you don't add it now iChat will ask you each time you open it)
    Click Done.
The Buddy List should open (New Window)
The Accounts part of the Preferences should now have the new name and you should be looking at the details.
You can add something in the Description line which will then title the Buddy List (Useful when you have two or more names) and make it show up as that in the iChat Menu > Accounts and the Window Menu of iChat when logged in.
You can then highlight any other Account/Screen Name you don't want to use and use the Minus ( - ) Button to delete it.

  • USB Camera does not work with iChat

    Hello,
I'm having a terrible time getting my ToUcam Pro II to work with iChat. I downloaded the iUSBcam program. That didn't work. I downloaded the program Macam, and copied the proper file into the Quicktime Library (as suggested) and that didn't work. I downloaded IOXwebcam, and got an error stating that it wouldn't run due to the fact that it didn't have the proper security settings. Sigh.
So... what am I to do?
I'd like to buy a webcam that does, actually, work with my 8 month old Mac Pro 4 core mac desktop, but the iSight camera is ridiculously expensive. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
    Brad

An X-box 360 cam will do it although not in that list.
Anything that is USB 2.0 and marked UVC compliant or Vista Certified.
Be Aware some Mac Keyboards do not have USB 2.0 ports.

    (1) FaceTime cannot work with iChat.
*FaceTime ONLY works with other FaceTimes*:
     • iPhone 4 http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/facetime/
     • iPod touch Gen4 http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/facetime/
     • FaceTime (beta) on iNtel Mac w/OS X 10.6.4 or later http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/
*FaceTime works with _NO OTHER_ app from Apple, Skype, or anyone else*.
    (2) You do not tell us which imac you use, so we cannot give a yes or no answer to your question about whether it is possible to use ichat *_on your mac_* to communicate with someones iPod or iPhone with facetime.
The answer to your question is yes, FaceTime is possible, but *ONLY IF* your Mac is an iNtel Mac that is using Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.4 or later) with the FaceTime beta application software.

When you are shopping for your iPod touch, you may want to ask the retailer if he can guarantee that FaceTime will work for you.
    According to info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4319
FaceTime may not be available in all countries or regions.
Even it FaceTime works in one part of the country, it cannot work where adequate wi-fi coverage does not exist.

  • How does FaceTime work without wifi now?

I have tried to use FaceTime multiple times and it always told me that I needed wifi. I went to show my friend what it said when I tried it and it worked. Wifi free! *** why couldn't it work all the time like that

As the following article states, FaceTime requires:
An active Wi-Fi connection or cellular data connection. Additional account features may be required to use FaceTime over Cellular. Contact your carrier for more details.

  • Does FaceTime works with an iMac 2006 ? (intel 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 3GB ram ?

I have an IMac 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram.  I have an Apple ID that is working properly for many years.  When I want to activate FaceTime, it gives me an error of ID.  I have checked my ID in iTune and it is fine.  What should I do ?
    My OS is Lion 10.7.1.

It is sometimes very peculiar to observe the side effects of some systems settings, but this would be an odd 'fix' if it were to work. Aside from anything else, the energy saver settings impact the system only when it's running since they are integral to MacOS. It's difficult to imagine how these could affect the cold-booting of the machine - though it isn't impossible of course, in as far as changing the energy saving settings might impact on parameter RAM.
However, even if it were to actually resolve this, you would need to switch back to the prior settings to make sure it remained 'fixed', since you hardly want a Mac that limits your choice of any settings that should be available to you.
And while I think, it may actually be worth resetting PRAM as follows:
    -Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.

  • Does FaceTime works in israel?

My iPad 2 doesn't work with FaceTime in Israeli wifi, what should I do?

Try changing your DNS service. Many folks have discovered that changing their DNS service fixes FaceTime connection issues.
    The ideal way is to configure your modem/router with DNS service, but often settings in Setting/Wi-Fi on your Mac will override the router settings. Try either of these;
    OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Google Public DNS
    8.8.8.8. 8.8.4.4

  • Does Facetime work over 3-G or just Wi-Fi ?

I can't seem to connect via facetime when there is no wi-fi network available (e.g., in the woods) even though I have a 3G connection.  Any way to set that up?

No. It only works over WiFi.

  • Does FaceTime work in Quebec?

I have a MacBook pro with leopard and live in the US. I will be traveling to Quebec and am considering upgrading to lion just so I can FaceTime home while I am there.  But I want to make sure it will work because the last time I was in Quebec I recall that some sites don't work. Only one I remember is Hulu. I know FaceTime is not a site but I didn't want to get there and find out my free way to communicate home will not work.
    Thanks,
    Robert

The Lion Thumb drive should be able to be used to install Lion on all of the computers that you own. I'm not sure that it can upgrade a Lion intallation, but you should be able to do a clean install by erasing the Lion disk first.
If you can clone your Lion drive to an external, you can use an updated version of Migration Assistant to migrate Leopard data to Lion:

  • Does iMessage work with Ichat?

Will IChat work with Imessage or, will apple be creating an App for Imessage for Lion.

    Hi,
In Messages you can have AIM accounts (Now listed as AOL)
Some Apple IDs issued by Apple (@mac.com and iCloud linked @me.com and @icloud.com) are also valid AIM names.
This may mean you had entered the Apple ID you used for iMessages as an AIM account before.
iMessages and AIM are separate Services and you cannot chat from one to the other.
To be clear the app is called Messages.
It can have an iMessages account based on a "registered" Apple ID.
It can have AIM accounts which might be based on Apple IDs as above.
It can have Jabber accounts which include Google Talk and Facebook Chat IDs
It can use Yahoo IDs (Must be registered with Yahoo) for Text only chats.
There is also a Bonjour account which can be enabled and this allows you to Chat on your LAN with other Macs (using iChat or Messages Bonjour accounts).
Whilst you do not have to have the iMessages and the Bonjour accounts active you cannot delete them from the list in Messages.

  • HT203585 Does facetime work with Yosemite?

I'm trying to download Facetime from the App Store and I'm getting a message saying "Facetime can't be installed on HD because the version of OS X is too new".  My OS is Yosemite 10.10.1.

The FaceTime app in the App Store is only for OS X 10.6. You have FaceTime built-in. It's in the Applications folder, unless you somehow managed to delete it.

  • Does Facetime work from USA to Europe

Trying to get Facetime to connect from Ireland to the US on a Mac Book pro.  Both ends are on the internet.

    Joe,
Ireland to the US should not be a problem.  Make sure that both devices are setup for the proper time zone that they are in.  If they are not, then Facetime will not connect.  As I've posted before, I think it has something to do with the Facetime routers that are selected to handle the call.

  • Does it work internationally?

Hey does Facetime work internationally the way skype does?

I don't know about Skype, but facetime works just fine internationally so long as both ends are on wi-fi.
I used it from France to UK this week, Macbook to Macbook and Macbook to iphone 3 and 4.
    Excellent tool.
