Does faster memory make a difference?

hi,
I'm currently building my new system (middle of the road, around 1500€, mainly for AE CS5) and I have a specific question regarding memory:
does it make sense to invest in more expensive/faster RAM (1600MHz instead of 1333?)?
what I had in mind until now were 24Gb (2x DIMM DDR3 12GB PC3-10667 CL9 Kingston Value Kits). now I heard that the kingston value kits might be more unrelieable and slower than brands like ocz or g.skill and I'm thinking about getting for instance 2 x DIMM DDR3 12GB PC3-12800 CL8, OCZ Gold Kits.
the difference in cost is quite a bit, so do you think it is worth it and one is going to notice a significant difference in speed?
what other RAM kits could you suggest?
thanks, eva

when extending my wifi network using an Extreme as my main and an Express to extend.. does it help to make sure that both devices are on the same channel or does it even make a difference if they are on different channels?

Have you even tried the process in which i have described in my previous post?
Yes, many times.  If you are setup to "extend a wireless network, the screen looks like this:
If you click the Wireless Options button, the screen looks like this:
Where is it on this screen that you see a setting to adjust the channel?  It sounds like you are confusing "create a wireless network"....which does allow you to adjust channels.....with "exend a wireless network" which does not.
Normally, when you extend a wireless network, AirPort Utility used to always assign the same channel to the extending device. That is no longer the case. It might be the same, or it might be different.  You have no control over this, so you have to accept what AirPort Utility thinks is best.

  • Does upping bitrate make a difference? Or vice versa (lowering)?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, I changed my import settings on preferences to using MP3 Encoder to a setting of 192 kbps. It changes the feature when you right click a song, instead of being 'Create AAC Version', it is now 'Create MP3 Version'. This way I convert my lower bit rate songs to a higher 192 kbps.
Does it make a difference in the quality wise of the song? I know it changes the size which is a good thing if you lower it.

    Or vice versa (lowering)?
And to answer the second part of the question:  Yes, if you start with 192 kb/s AAC or MP3 file, and convert to a lower bitrate, the new file will have reduced audio quality.
As diesel notes, the audio quality degradation incurred in a lossy compression cannot later be recovered by converting back to a higher bitrate.

  • GTK apps in Qt Environment -- Does it really make a difference?

Whenever I read around about running GTK apps in KDE, I get a lot of horror stories about how needing to load GTK libraries in the Qt environment will degrade my system performance and bog down my desktop experience. After spending a lot of time in two pretty popular GTK apps (Firefox & Gimp), and monitoring my desktop performance, I've certainly not found anything noticable (other than that they look ugly as sin). Furthermore, I keep a system monitoring widget on my desktop, and it doesn't seem to make a lick of difference on my system resources. Are all the warnings about running GTK in Qt simply horror stories? Has anyone actually noticed a difference from running GTK apps in Qt (or the other way around for that matter)?

  • Does installation language make a difference?

    Hello all,
A client has request a new server with Server 2012R2 and SQL 2008R2.
I have installed it all in English, and they have now said that they have an application that will only run on a FRENCH windows, and only on a FRENCH SQL.
    Can this be correct?
I thought that the kernel was all in the same language, and that the SQL database engine was also not language specific.
    Thanks for your comments
    Nicholas Cross

    Good day nebc100
I will try to clear the issue :-)
I will start from the end: There is no problem and you can make the configuration that you need at any time :-)
I Use more languages which are much more complex (Hebrew, which is written from right to left and it is really different from europeanen languages), and belive me that I alway need to do those actions :-)
    Now for the explanations:
    * There is no SQL Server french or Hebrew or English and the same about windows server 2012r2 (actually from windows server 2008 it start if I remember correctly). You can add languages and remove them at any time (not need to restart even in 2012r2).
To add a language in windows 2012r2
    - use the search and write: language
    - In the result you will get "add language" click this and add any language that you want.
    - move the language that you want as default up to top. This is important! since this is the default language for all applications (non-Unicode programs) including the SQL Server (if you install the SQL Server after this setting, then this will be the default
    setting for SQL).
Working with SQL Server and language
SQL Server supports all languages that are supported by Windows operating systems!
You can use this query to get all the language that SQL Server support:
    SELECT msg.language_id, lang.langid, alias
    FROM
    sys.messages AS msg
JOIN syslanguages AS lang ON lang.msglangid = msg.language_id
    GROUP BY msg.language_id, lang.langid, alias
You can use this query to change the SQL Server language:
EXEC sp_configure "default language", <langid` that you want to set from previuse query>
    RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE;
You can use any language that you want for the SQL Server and yet work with any other language in the database as long as you work with UNICODE.
    The magic word is Collations!
You can read more in this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144260(v=sql.105).aspx
** Every time that I open a new virtual machine in Azure, which is based on build-in template, I need to do those configuration since the default is English and Hebrew is not installed, and the SQL Server is set to English an collation is Latin

  • What is the best I7 Intel processor to get on the Macbook Pro 15"?  Are these processors 2nd generation processors?  Does it matter?  Should I wait until - when? - for 2nd generation processors to be used?  Does the 2.5 Mh processor make a difference?

I'm about to order a MacBook Pro 15".  I wonder if the I7 processors are 2nd generation or if it matters.  Also, is there significant benefit to getting the 2.4 or 2.5 Ghz processor over the 2.2?  I'm not a gamer or graphics manipulator, but I do look at (not edit) a lot of video for my work, and I typically multi-task, having many applications and internet windows open at once. Also, I will be running Windows for work access and applications.  Of course, I have little idea what makes a difference in my use experience, except I plan to get max RAM and probably the fastest hard drive.  Any advice welcome.

    Steve,
I appreciate your focus on assistance, and thank you for your help.  Couple of follow up questions:  What you said about the new specs suggests that the MacBook Pro line has recently been upgraded with, what, the 2nd gen Intel chips, some other incremental improvements?  So maybe it has paid off to crawl along with my old mac to get the latest tech.  For these kinds of upgrades, I guess Apple doesn't advertise that they have the latest chips (I've seen PC ads touting the 2nd gen chips, and checked out the Intel site, so that's how I became aware) and all?
I'm planning to enjoy this computer for quite some years.  Of course I will get the 3 yr extended warranty.  And I was planning to get the hi res antiglare screen: that seems to be the best of the options.  It looks like one can now get a faster 750 Gb fast drive, instead of having to settle for 500 in the faster version.  The cost does add up, but my feeling was to go for broke and get the best machine I can.  So does getting the faster cpu and hd and max ram (perhaps buying third party) and all make sense, assuming I can afford it when I add everything up, or is it like a moderately good guitar player getting a top of the line guitar he can't really play well enough to warrant it?  (I remember a story about a student under Segovia arriving with a very very expensive guitar when he was still early in the learning process; it may be apocryphal, but story goes that Segovia took the guitar from the student and smashed it to smithereens.  I assume that was not just because the student mistook the instrument for skill in playing it, but perhaps also because he would be too careful with such an expensive instrument, and fail to master it.  Maybe not a perfect analogy, but I could be mislead by seeking the "best barn burner on the block" when what I need is what will work fine for my purposes.) So I think your original response was probably right on in terms of what will actually be of use to me.
    Thanks again,
    David

  • Does a THX Cert make the difference on a 65" Panasonic Plasma?

We're looking to replace a 65" tv in our family/moive watching room.  After a ton of back and forth, we've settled on a Panasonic plasma...either the S1 or V10.  Now, neither are stocked in my Best Buy for me to compare at this size.  I don't care about the Internet options on the V10.  The only difference we care about would be "if" the THX Cert actually makes a difference when watching Blu-Ray.  And if it does, does that really justify an additional $1400 in price.  It's not the $ is not objsect, but this is our movie watching room, we don't plan on replacing it for at least another 5+ years and we just want the best picture we can get.  (Oh, and for watching football too!!!)
If anoyone has seen both or can guide me either way I'd greatly appreciate it!!!
    Thanks,
    Kear

Hey Kear! good question- the THX certification is something that Panasonic pays to have on that, the big the the v10 has that the s1 does not is "thx mode", its a picture setting that has more natural colors than "vivid", "cinema", or any other standerd setting. honostly, if the other features do not concern you, i would recommend gettin the s1 and having it calibrated by geek squad- a calibration is basically a reset of all the color setting and they actually cusmotize it to the room it is in, this will give you a better picture than you would get out of THX mode and it will add a few lears to the life of the tv, also the price just dropped to $199 for the calibration! hope this helps!

Let me see if I can help you with the basic WDS configuration steps:
Note: To help facilitate the setup, temporarily connect the AXn directly to the AEBS LAN port using an Ethernet cable. Once the setup is complete, you can move the AXn to the desired location. For all configuration steps you will be using the AirPort Utility. Before starting, be sure to jot down the AppleIDs for both base stations.

  • Hard Drive Placement -- Does it make a difference?

    Hi,
I just got a new 2.66 Quad. It has the factory 1TB as a boot drive and a 1TB and 750 that came out of my old MacPro G5. I want to replace the 750 with a 1.5 and fill the empty bay with another 1.5. (I will partition the 1.5's so that I can use the external 750's I already own for external back ups.)
Does the Mac care about the order in which I place the drives in the 4 bays? Am I correct that it will look in the front bay for the boot drive? (I know I can change boot drive in system preferences, but I'm curious as to whether the order in the bays makes any difference at all.)
    Thanks.

The Hatter obviously did not read your post.
I have a Dual-Quad-Core 2.93GHz Intel Xeon system. I upgraded from a G4-400 (Sawtooth). All Power PC applications run just fine, although they all use Rosetta technology to emulate the Power PC. Snow Leopard will allow you to optionally install Rosetta, so your applications are fine.
Rosetta will require about double the system RAM per application that the application needed with a Power PC system. Intel-native applications and those written for either will not need the extra RAM. Intel-specific and Universal Binary applications will take better advantage of your system's processors.
I have booted my Mac Pro from any one of three hard drives in four hard drive bays. My current system has a Leopard startup drive in the third bay, a Snow Leopard system in the fourth bay (for testing) and a Leopard system in the first bay. The first bay is the closest to the front of the computer. I have a 1.5T aftermarket WD drive in the second bay that is my Time Machine drive. First bay has the Apple-installed 1T drive. Third bay has a 1T SATA drive out of my G4-400 system (which I installed an SATA drive controller card into so that I could move to SATA). Fourth bay has a .5T SATA drive (originally in my G4-400) that I use for testing purposes and any beta testing I am doing.
Your Mac Pro will also start from an external drive chassis, assuming you have an e-SATA or Fibre card installed in your Mac Pro (and I have done that a couple of times).
To determine what drive should automatically start your computer, open *System Preferences* and click on *Startup Disk*. Any drive with a valid System Folder will appear in the list of drives, as well as a "network startup" icon (that will have a question mark if your system cannot see a network boot configuration). It is this preference that will determine the order in which your system will try to find a valid System Folder.

Yes, I know. Which is why I won't argue over it.   As I said I've never had an issue with it when travelling.
And Apparently the purchase is working fine for the OP, its the actual download that gets hung up.
Anyway, If the Purchase is going fine, then its more likely an issue with the internet connection.
