Does FCE compress HD video?

I'm working on some projects shot on a Canon HV20. A friend of mine who uses FCP said FCE doesn't compress HD video so it will consume more drive space than it would using FCP. Can anyone shed some light on this? I wasn't successful finding any info on this in the discussions.

You may wish to search this forum for the differences between FCE and FCP. It's been asked plenty of times.
In short, FCE and PRO are very similar with the later having more options and works with a larger variety of codecs.
FCE is DV, HDV and AVCHD only at fixed resolutions. Anything you learn in FCE is useable in Pro if you decide on that later.

  • Can't compress a video small enough

I'm a FC Express user and want to submit videos to a website that requires them to be 2 minutes long, 240x320, and no bigger than 7 megs., and they have to be .wmv files. I tried saving a video as a 240x320 Quicktime time file compressed as much as possible, then using the Flip4Mac Quicktime plug-in, and compressing it as much as possible in that to convert it to a .wmv file but it is still too big at 17 megs. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Charlie Neuman, San Marcoss, CA

1 pass CBR means it looks at it one time and uses a Constant Bit Rate. I don't think you can do anything else when exporting from FCE directly. If you use something like Episode, made by Telestream, who make Flip4Mac, you can use use 2-pass VBR. It looks at the media to assess how it can compress it better and then in the second pass does the compression. VBR stands for Variable Bit Rate. With 2-pass VBR a little reduction of the bit rate, perhaps only one end (it's variable the bit rate can fluctuate between say 300 and 500 depending on the complexity of the video), and you'll get your 7MB.

  • Compressing audio/video with mono sound

    Hey all,
I have a video that has mono sound. On the left channel no sound and on the right channel the sound itself. Now I want to use compressor to compress the video and audio to AppleTV format. When I convert it the sound stays the same.
My questions is how to I combine both audio channels to 1 channel or how to I get sound in both channels.
    Stefan Segers

To get the audio to be routed to both left and right output channels, open the video in your NLE (FCE, FCP, Premier, etc) and pan the audio to center. Export and recompress in Compressor.

  • Compression of Video for Web

For those who have gone to Apple's Quicktime page and have viewed the movie trailers...you will know what I am referring to...read on.
For a while now I have been compressing different video segment, of varying length for use on the web. I have compressed the video in all different ways using the H.264 compression for web streaming. However, no matter how good the video footage is SD or HD there still is some degradation in the footage when put to the web...no matter if it is compressed for 100k, 300k or 800k. And even with a high speed line the streaming seems to take a while.
On Apple's movie trailer site...the videos that are there are two to three times bigger in size (visually) and the same length time wise, however, their videos stream immediately and appear to have no degradation in the picture. How are they doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
No matter what, when you downconvert, you lose quality.
The apple trailers are compressed as follows...
    480x360
    H.264, AAC, Timecode

  • What formats does FCE 4.0 handle?

I have movie files off a Sony Handcam and it is produced as a mpg. Quick time can play them, imovie won't edit them.
Does FCE 4.0 edit .mpg files? If not, any other suggestions?

    basilbrush wrote:
.. a Sony Handcam .. Quick time can play them, imovie won't edit them.
    that's quite normal:
mpeg is a delivery codec. for editing in iM, audio and video have to be individual streams within the file.. mpeg is well-known for 'muxing' the streams.. so, for usage in iM, they have to be de-muxed.
    a) use the intended workflow - if your cam is a still-cam with the ability for moving images, import via iPhoto, use the MediaBrowser to get access in iM - this workflow cares for converting
    b) .. or, your device is supported by iM (list here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290?viewlocale=en_US ) = import via 'Import from camcorder' and don't care for codecs ..
    c) .. or use designated converter tools as Mpeg Streamclip, to convert into a iM/FCE compatible format...

  • FCE Compression question

    Hi,
I have finished my 4 projectsin FCE. Each one is about 2gigs each. I want to use iDVD to burn my projects onto a DVD to distribute to others. But my projects are too large to put all of them on the same DVD.
    How do I compress them?
    How will the quality be?
Is there anything else I should know?
    Thanks
    Greg

You can get a dual-layer DVD 8.5gb, iDVD will take those.
Or, you can compress your video. The quality will go down, but u can limit the loss by not lowering the bitrate too much. Experiment between CBR and VBR to see what you like quality and filesize-wise. If you have Compressor, make your audio into .ac3. THat will help a lot.

  • How can I connect my 3gen apple tv with HDMI to my bush LCD32TV022HD which does not have an HDMI port but does have 1)S-Video I/P, 2)Video I/P, 3) L

How can I connect my 3gen apple tv with HDMI to my BUSH LCD32TV022HD
This does not have an HDMI port but does have:-
    1) S-Video I/P,
    2) Video I/P,
    3) Audio Input (Left & Right)
    4) Audio In jack (for VGA and DVI source)
    5) DVI input
    6) VGA input

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The Apple TV doesn't officially support a DVI connection, however you may be able to get it to work. You will first need to check that your TV supports either 720p or 1080p as well as HDCP. If you are able to get the video working over the DVI connection, you may also require a DAC in order to connect with Apple TV's optical audio output to the TVs audio imput.
You may well wish to make sure that the DVI connection works before spending any money on a DAC..

  • Does anyone know a video converter to convert Internet video recordings. Its in an IVR file, I can get it to work on real player on a widows but cant get it to work on my mac.

Does anyone know a video converter for a video file for internet video recordings. IVR file. I can get it to work on real player on my windows but can not open it on my mac.

Try downloading and using VLC. It is a very popular media player that plays just about every file format out there. That way you would not need to convert it.

  • Is it possible to compress HD video from 1.5gb to .5gb w/out losing quality

i need to compress HD video, whos files sizes range from 1.5gb-2.5gb down to .5gb-1gb, respectively. is it possible to do it without losing any noticeable quality or not. what i do is export the file as quicktime movie and get a file around 1.5gb so can i get that down to say 500mb's? i have compressor and final cut pro 7, do either of those work or do i need another program or is what i am asking simply impossible

Some quality will be lost. You are, after all, compressing the video.
The H.264 codec is darn good at being low data rate but good quality. BUT, it is a final delivery format. Meaning that it is meant as a final step...a way to compress your project into a viewable format. It isn't editable.
Just use the Quicktime 7 Streaming presets.
Unless you intend this footage for some other use. What EXACTLY are you trying to accomplish? And note, a "quicktime movie" is just a format. It's like saying "a car." What TYPE of quicktime? H.264, MPEG-4, Sorenson, ProRes, HDV? Like Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Jeep Cherokee...

  • Best compression for video with a lot of static text and graphics

Hello! I am producing an instructional DVD and am getting ready to output the files and was wondering what the best compression format would be for me to use.
About 1/3 of the clips consist of video shot in SD with very little movement (guy sitting at a desk talking to the camera.) The rest contains graphics created in After Effects and then imported back into Final Cut. The graphics are primarily text based, and don't change too often. There are some still images as well, but they are static for the most part save for some occasional panning. Oh, and the total length of all the video clips is about 70 minutes.
I would like to compress these videos so as to get the best possible quality in the text. I did a few tests, but the quality in the letters seemed a little worse than I had hoped. Is this just going to be an inevitability I have to live with, or is there a particular setting that would help me out?
Thanks for reading this; any help would be greatly appreciated!
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM

You know--I really have no idea why I didn't do it that way. I exported uncompressed files from After Effects and then imported them into FCP; some of the files are huuuge, like 60 GB+
I think in the next version of this I will probably just edit in FCP then import it into AE, and then export from there. As it stands though, I've sort of made some changes and done stuff in FCP after importing the clips, so I'd like to just export using Compressor.
So are you saying it's better to export uncompressed from FCP and then import that into Compressor and go from there? I've been just selecting the 'Export Using Compressor' option in FCP and going from there...
    Thanks!

The default settings mostly likely use an audio sample rate of 32k. This doesn't work probably in FCP. You're probably better off capturing the tape in iMovie.
