Does FCPX import AVCHD 1920x1080?

I have a Canon XA10 camcorder which is supported by iMovie and FCPX.  When I import through iMovie, my video retains full 1920x1080, but importing the same video in fcpx seems to be reduced in quality.  I can import in iMove and then import the iMovie event in fcpx and everything seems fine.  Is there a setting in fcpx to retain this res in fcpx?  Is the difference my imagination?  Please advise.

Yes, FCP X imports AVCHD 1920x1080 in full quality.
All you do is select Import from Camera, with the camera connected and switched on of course, and the Import window should appear.
The only time it may appear of lower quality is if you are importing as a proxy, which you shouldn't be doing normally.

  • Does FCPX support AVCHD-lite? confusing info ...

AVCHD with 720p isn't explicitly listed, although on the Supported Cams List, I read devices using this format.
    anyone any insight?

This is not correct. iMovie 11 'supports' AVCHD Lite only in the sense that it will convert AVCHD Lite streams to (much bulkier) Apple's AIC streams.  There is no native support for AVCHD Lite in iMovie 11.  iMovie 11 does support a number of other H.264 codecs natively, but this does not automatically mean support for AVCHD Lite.

Thanks for the responce but unfortunately Precision Editor is greyed out just like all of the other editing tools. I hope Apple is working on a fix because I have some videos I'm trying to finish.

  • Does FCPX still import video from MiniDV tape?

I just went from Snow Leopard to Lion and now my trusty old FCP 6 will not install.  Apple says they're sorry but there's nothing they can do to help.
So...I'm nervous about FCPX but am willing to learn if it will still import video from my DV deck from tape.  Also, does FCPX do automatic logging and batch capturing from tape like FCP 6 did?  I appreciate any advice.

***** that Rosetta is no longer part of Lion and you can't install PowerPC programs.
I have created partitions on my hard drive and left enough space on one partition to keep Snow Leapard and I have about 3 apps on that partition that are not compatible with Lion and reboot in SL to use those apps.
If you really wanted to export back to tape after creating a video in FCPX, you can export the video as a Quicktime, reboot in SL, open FCP6, import the video and send to tape.
Long workarounds to simple soulutions from the past.
I have FCP7, so I don't have to reboot in SL.

Does the new FCP 7.0 directly imports AVCHD files from sony cam?
Does it need any conversion? If yes, how is the conversion time, and does the conversion degrades image quality?
    Thanks in advance.

Which sony camera? there are a lot.
Yes, it needs to convert. AVCHD isn't a format that most editing systems deal with natively. You will be converting it to ProRes. The conversion time is dependent on too many factors to give a precise number. Based on computer used, processors, RAM, how much footage, where it will be stored...all of that. The conversion doesn't degrade the image.
Here...I have a workflow tutorial for this: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial

  • Easy setup options? Import settings for AVCHD 1920x1080 PF30 .

I have recorded AVCHD 1920x1080 PF30 clips. What setting should I use to import the clips? I see 1920x1080 i60 and i50.

You want AVCHD 1920*1080 i60. For the files you import as well as the sequence you create, under item properties change the field dominance to "none" - then you'll have your progressive sequence.

  • How to import 30p 1920x1080 footage into cs4

    Hi,
I shot some footage using my canon hf20 in 30p, at 1920x1080. when i open a new sequence i don't see a setting for 1920x1080 30p under AVCHD.
at first i was going to use the XDCAM HD preset since it's the only one i see that has 30p, but i realized that it's 1440x1080, not 1920x1080.
how else to import 30p 1920x1080 into premiere CS4?
    1) will the 1080i30 (60i) setting preserve the 30p progressive footage (even though the option is listed in premiere pro under 1080 interlaced)?
    2) or is the only way to edit 30p progressive at 1920x1080 is to select the AVCHD 1080p 24p setting and change the frame rate to 29.97?
    3) or is there some other trick altogether?
    thanks.

thanks for the replies. so does the 1080i30 (60i) setting do some kind of de-interlacing on 30p footage, even if it's not native and it's wrapped in 60i (like it is in the canon hf20)? or does the camera do that automatically?

  • Does this support AVCHD files straight from the camera (Panasonic)??

Does the new final cut pro X support AVCHD files from the camera?  I record with a Panasonic AG-HMC40.
    Thank you

FCPX doesn't import AVCHD files from my Panasonic GH-2, even though importing works perfectly into iMovie.  So just because camera X imports natively into iMovie, it isn't certain it will import natively into FCPX.
iMovie archives will always import because the AVCHD has already been converted to ProRes on import.
In FCPX the AVCHD files from say a GH-2 can be edited natively if you don't want to re-render into ProRes, but to date I can't import them to test this.

  • AVCHD 1920x1080 must be rendered in FCE 4.0?

I'm new to this....bought a Canon HF-100 and went off on a trip with two 16gb sdhc cards, shooting everything at 1920x1080. I have several hours of video I need to edit.
Today I just upgraded FCE 4.0 because it can handle AVCHD and I have log/transferred in a few clips only to find I have to render everything on the timeline. ARRGH!!!
I THINK it's because easy set-up only has a frame size of 1440x1080, is that why I have to render?
Is there a way to change the sequence setting in FCE4.0 to 1920x1080?
I heard about Streamclip, but it doesn't seem to support .mts files
Do I have to buy FCP? Yikes! I can't afford it!
    Does anyone have any ideas???
    Thanks!!!

Thank you for your response, Tom.
Is it better to have Streamclip convert the AIC files to 1440 or have FCE render them (which I guess is doing the same thing)? Both seem to take a LONG time.
This appears to be an onerous workflow: log and transfer all 600 clips, then either render them in FCE or convert them to 1440x1080 in Streamclip and re-import, edit the movie, and export the movie.
AND, I just tried to export two minutes off the timeline at best quality 1440x1080 QT conversion: it took 35 minutes!!!
Does that sound right? Any suggestions for steamlining the workflow or speeding things up?
Perhaps upgrading to an 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core with 8 GB RAM instead of my measly 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core 4 GB RAM machine...but wait..first I need to buy more hard drives...since the AIC files are HUGE (1.7g for a 2 minute clip!)...but...
Since FCE only supports 1440x1080 I'm guessing to realize the full resolution of my camcorder I need to get FC Pro, which, I assume, does support 1920x1080, but does FCP support AVCHD?
Any advice is greatly appreciated since I am new to HD and AVCHD...thanks!
PS I wish Canon, Panasonic, and Sony would tell consumers that AVCHD camcorders require FC Pro and $6,000 Macs to do editing!

I am trying to determine the new project preset for a multi-camera video shot as follows:  3 Canon camcorders,
Main shot is DV (tape) (720x480, 29fps) - ceremony and reception
    b-roll is DVD (mini-disk) (720x480, 29fps) - bride preparations
additional b-roll is AVCHD (1920x1080, 29fps) - groom preparations and misc all day ceremony and reception.
Film is from a wedding, DV contains main footage so I assume it will need to be the base.  I am planning to use the preset for DV-Widescreen.  Is there a better option?  I'm concerned about playback as the three appear to have different PAR.  I'm using Premiere Elements 10 on W8.
Ultimately this will be burned for two formats - one for a DVD that can be watched on a widescreen TV, second for a short clip trailer to go on vimeo.
(And no I won't be doing this again for a wedding that I shoot.)

  • HT5251 Can't import AVCHD into iPhoto after upgrade

I created a new iPhoto library after doing the upgrade and tried all the suggested methods for importing my avchd folders and it didn't work! Am I missing something? The quicker they dump avchd the better!

I have the same problem with iPhoto 9.3's advertised ability to import AVCHD videos, and I also carefully followed Apple's instructions. (I am using the latest version of Mac OS X too; 10.7.4.) I get lots of "unreadable files" due to "unrecognized format", even with MTS files.
In addition, Apple's instructions imply that the camera should either mount and allow AVCHD movies to be imported in the usual way, or not mount at all, in which case Apple's instructions for copying appropriate folders should be followed. However, my Panasonic FZ150 mounted normally, but no AVCHD movies showed in the list to be imported.
I reported this to Apple via "Provide iPhoto Feedback" in the iPhoto menu.
Has anyone got this to work with the publicly-released version of iPhoto 9.3?

  • How do I import AVCHD videos into FCP X?

    Hi everyone,
I'm running FCP X on a Macbook Pro (2.3 GHz Intel i5, 4GB RAM), and I am filming with a Sony Handycam AVCHD camera.  I've tried simply importing AVCHD footage from the Handycam using the camera import setting in FCP, and sometimes it will recognize the camera, but usually it will not.  I've also tried importing the footage in iMovie, but I have the same issue.  After I realized that FCP does not communicate well with the camera, I purchased a third party converter called 4Media MP4 converter.  Sometimes this solves the issue and the video will convert to MP4, which I can then edit in FCP.  But most of the time the footage gets converted into slow motion video with regular speed audio.  I've also tried Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac, but the quality from that sucked even worse!
Does anyone know how to make this work?  Am I doomed to be unable to use an AVCHD camera with my Mac?  Are there any better third party converters?

In FCP 7 I'd normally use the Log and Transfer function to convert the AVCHD files to ProRes. However with FCP X you can use the Import from Camera... command in the File menu or the button shortcut for the same function.
This can be done by connecting the camera, or putting the memory card from the camera into a card reader, and then, from within the Imprt from Camera dialogue, selecting Open Archive and select the camera, card or in my case the backup I've made of the card.
I regularly back up my AVCHD files to hard disk, or BluRay data disk, so I can reuse my SD cards but an important thing to remember when doing this is that you need to copy the whole directory structure of the memory card to a new folder on the hard drive. Simply selecting the .mts files won't work as the 'Import From Camera' function needs to see the whole directory structure to interpret the what files are there etc. I create a new folder and then copy all the folders and files on my card into that folder on my hard drive. When selecting Import from Camera/Open Archive I then choose the folder, not the files inside it. Once this is done the video files are presented and I can audition them and choose to import all of them or select the files I want.
None of these methods require the files to be transcoded prior to import. You can choose the transcoding method during import so that either high quality ProRes files are created or Proxy files, smaller and lower quality for editing.
