Does FCPX support AVCHD-lite? confusing info ...

AVCHD with 720p isn't explicitly listed, although on the Supported Cams List, I read devices using this format.
anyone any insight?

This is not correct. iMovie 11 'supports' AVCHD Lite only in the sense that it will convert AVCHD Lite streams to (much bulkier) Apple's AIC streams.  There is no native support for AVCHD Lite in iMovie 11.  iMovie 11 does support a number of other H.264 codecs natively, but this does not automatically mean support for AVCHD Lite.

  • When will FCE support AVCHD Lite?

As far as I can tell with several Internet searches coupled with a lot of futzing with my Lumix camera, FCE does not support AVCHD Lite. Is support for this going to happen? When?
    Thanks much.
    Benny

Is there an FCE support forum?
    Yes, and this is it.
Feel free to ask questions on the use of FCE or search the forum for existing Q&As.
It's hosted by Apple but is a user to user forum.
It's rare for an official Apple employee to intervene unless rule/s are not adhered to.

  • Does FCPX support 60p?

    Does FCPX support 60p?

    Hi Tom,
I'm using a Sony HDR-CX130 and shooting in 60p for best quality (and hopefully best for FCP editing).
I downloaded trial version of ClipWrap to enable usage of the MTS files. Your forum discussion headed me in the direction of ClipWarp by the way. My question is which Output Format to use. By the way (and I realize how tedious and time consuming it might be to repeat or paste a link to the info) it would be so very helpful to us new to many of these things to include details of how to use the recommended item. I am guessing that you have ascertained that the "Use ClipWrap" alone can be a wee bit frustrating. Ok, as to the question, I find these available options for output format along with the file size for 1 minute that the trial version will process:
Rewrap (don't alter video samples)         60.5 MB
Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)           427.2 MB
         Apple ProRes 422                               612.9 MB
Apple ProRes 422 HQ                         915.9 MB
         DVCProHD                                            489 MB
         DV                                                     128.9 MB
         HDV                                                   113.3 MB
    All generated an .mov file.
I've eliminated the last 3 as they seem to distort the aspect ratio (and resultant image squishing the side making the image taller and thinner than actual.
I thought I read previous postings from you that indicated one only need to Rewrap. That made the first choice appear to be the appropriate one. When viewing the .mov file with Quicktime, the audio was as expected but the video image lagged, dragged, stuttered, froze while the audio continued as expected. Yes, it is an antique by today's standards - I am using an old G5 and waiting for Apple to come out with a Mac Pro that has a thunderbolt connection but I thought that info might help the diagnosis. In addition, this file entered into FCP brings the machine to its knees as well producing the spinning beachball of death.
The choices 2-4 above generated a Quicktime file that worked like a charm. I have not attempted to import into FCP as I am thinking I could get the answer to my question more accurately from here rather than a lengthy trial and error session that might also include something I am overlooking - not a pretty site several months down the road.
Ok, which Output Format should I use when I want the following in order of importance?:
No loss in quality (that is the reason for HD in the first place)
         Ease of use with FCP
Fastest when considering editing, final encoding, burning, etc. in FCP and DVD Studio Pro
Speed with which ClipWrap does its thing.
Some consideration of disk space but this is very low in the list. Disk space is cheap and I don't mind adding drives. I am planning a large raid storage purchase in the near future that will communicate using thunderbolt.
Thanks for all your help - you are the best.

  • Does FCPX support .exr files?

    Does FCPX support .exr files?

Industrial Light pioneers this codec; HDR (high dynamic range) file.  I'm not sure FCPX accepts it natively, so you may need to convert it to Apple ProRes first.  What camera are you using that records exr?  Also see link below:

  • Does final cut express support avchd lite?

Will final cut express resolve this issue, being that most of Panasonic's point and shoot cameras use avchd lite?
    Reasons I bought this program:
    One its good for editing.
Two it says its avchd compatible on the box.
However this does not seem to be the case.
    definition of avchd lite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

You make a good point about the audio. I have a Canon SD870 and recently shot some stills and video with it at a birthday party. It takes great shots, but I was actually impressed with the video and audio, probably because I did not know what to expect. In fact, it gave me enough material to edit a little movie for the birthday boy,(he was 50!) in imovie9. The speeches came out clear and the video was very acceptable.
But things can always be better, and that is why I want to upgrade to FCE, and buy a still camera that can shoot HD on the fly and can be used in FCE. I have been a Broadcast Sports TV cameraman for over 25 years, and I am very tired of lugging around bulky TV camera equipment. It seems a novelty to be able to shoot and edit HD on a pocket size camera.
Thanks for you input Al, I appreciate it. I still have two outstanding questions and I apologize if you have already answered them. First, How good/bad is the video quality with HD video captured on AVCHD Lite and then converted to use in FCE? Second, where does MPEG 4 rate in all this. Thank you.
    Bill

  • Does this support AVCHD files straight from the camera (Panasonic)??

Does the new final cut pro X support AVCHD files from the camera?  I record with a Panasonic AG-HMC40.
    Thank you

FCPX doesn't import AVCHD files from my Panasonic GH-2, even though importing works perfectly into iMovie.  So just because camera X imports natively into iMovie, it isn't certain it will import natively into FCPX.
iMovie archives will always import because the AVCHD has already been converted to ProRes on import.
In FCPX the AVCHD files from say a GH-2 can be edited natively if you don't want to re-render into ProRes, but to date I can't import them to test this.
    Chris.

  • Does imovie supports avchd files

does imovie 11 supports avchd files?

Yes, Maybe and No.  For iMovie '11, the answer is spread across a number of support responses and in the details of the technical requirements of the related products.
Yes.  It appears that if you keep the SD card in the camera and direct connect it to your Mac you may import and it will allow you to select the clips (as shown in the iMovie '11 import video -- Artcile VI104).  (But see notes below under Maybe and No.)
Maybe.  If you don't have the camera anymore, but you can copy the entire directory structure of the SD card over to a drive and copy it to a disk image then you should be able to import using an import command and choose the mounted disk image.  (But see note below under No.)
No.  If your resolution is set too high for iMovie then it will not import.  For example, using the disk image workaround I was able to get iMovie to show that clips were present, but it would not allow importing because they were originally done at 60p (Panasonic SD90 1080p).  The clip import window (as shown in Article VI104) shows different clips, but they show up as black with red "no" line across them with a "60."
If you want to import then make sure your resolution and frame rate is supported by iMovie.
The other options seem to be:
Buy a software transcoder specific to the purpose of converting .mts file to some other format for iMovie.
Transcode via Handbrake or Toast (results were not great in my opinion).
Toast workaround.  Create a DVD image in Toast and mount and import the image.  This works great.  There is a video on YouTube for it.  The one problem is that Toast will break large clips into smaller DVD files.  It did not seem to lose data, but now one large clip was three our four smaller ones and the time/date data was lost.  You have to reorder them in iMovie.  Quality was fine.  Time needed was OK.  Workflow was awful because of the larger clips being split.
Rewrap the .mts file in something iMovie can handle.  Seems to work fine and is the quickest so far.  There are pay-for wrappers and free wrappers/automator files available.

  • Does CS5 read AVCHD lite properly

Does anyone know if CS5 will read AVCHD lite files properly please?
I've read the thread relating to the same question on CS4 but perhaps some of the compatibility issues have been addressed on this release.   I note from the other thread that the trial version won't operate with 3rd party licenses formats anyway, so not mileage trying it out like that.

  • Does FCPX import AVCHD 1920x1080?

I have a Canon XA10 camcorder which is supported by iMovie and FCPX.  When I import through iMovie, my video retains full 1920x1080, but importing the same video in fcpx seems to be reduced in quality.  I can import in iMove and then import the iMovie event in fcpx and everything seems fine.  Is there a setting in fcpx to retain this res in fcpx?  Is the difference my imagination?  Please advise.

Yes, FCP X imports AVCHD 1920x1080 in full quality.
All you do is select Import from Camera, with the camera connected and switched on of course, and the Import window should appear.
The only time it may appear of lower quality is if you are importing as a proxy, which you shouldn't be doing normally.

  • Does FCPX support import/editing/export of 1080/60p?

I have a Panasonic HDC-HS900 that shoots 1080/60p. I know it's not part of the AVCHD standard, but I am hoping that FCPX will support this video.

I have the Panasonic TM700 and it will not import these files. Your best bet is converting them to Apple Proress LQ with Clipwrap

  • Does FCPX support 1080p?

I have a Canon HF G10 that is set to shoot in recording mode MXP with a fram rate of 60i.  When i import the video into FCPX i see 1920 x 1080 | 29.97 fps 1080i HD under the info tab for each clip.  How do i get it to 1080p?

60i is easier, with correct settings 24p is better, and I slightly disagree with sensei Wolsky …

was a short, illustrated essay I once wrote in this neverending debate ....
due to its inherent blurriness, interlaced feels, esp. on fast (horizontal) subjects, better.
for the price of a resolution loss.
you can accomplish a 'better' smoothness when following basic rules of cinematography, using a slow shutter-speed - which results in 'natural' motion-blurr.- for most situations, that means with the aid of ND-filters.-
    but …
if you like to use the material for adding effects, esp. tools like Optical Flow, plugins as Twixtor, short shutter speed is needed, therefor 'better'.-
    nicolefromgambrills wrote:
…  jerking the camera around, …
    avoid that.
or, stabilize it, manually, attaching weights to cam, fly-pods, in-cam-features.-
esp. any vertical movements create odd effects by using interlace.
the (in)famous 'movie look' every video-cam hobbyist is panting for is based NOT upon frame-rate, but upon achievable slow shutter-speeds. and 24fps would allow down to 1/48th - which gives wonderful blurry pics.-
on the other hand, in context with Jackson's Hobbit in HFR, it was noticed that a younger audience prefer the blurry-free, but smooth 'electronic' look.- different viewing habits.
you're using a beast of a cam - I assume, the correlations of iso / f-stop / sec is familiar to you

  • Does fcpx support panasonic lumixG5?

The title says it. I see from the list over supported cameras that g3 is listen as supported, but I wonder if annonse kones if the lumix g5 is supported. Looks like a good camera for my use, but it's a dealbreaker for me that I can import the film I capture straight into fcpx without any hassle.

Sure looks like it will be more than fine. Lots of camera/camcorders aren't listed, though they work fine.

  • Premiere Elements 3.0.2 AVCHD-Lite Support???

Typically you will see that Premiere Elements 7 was the first version to support AVCHD (video codec MPEG-4 AVC/H.264). I have seen reported support for AVCHD in an earlier version, Premiere Elements 4, when that program was installed in one of the Sony Vaio computers which had a Sony Add On Component to allow for AVCHD support.
But, what about AVCHD-Lite (which has the video codec MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, but frame size typically 1280 x 720 instead of the AVCHD's 1920 x 1080 square pixels or 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic? Does anyone know if Premiere Elements versions earlier than version 7 will support AVCHD-Lite. I have one report of a user claiming to be doing so with Premiere Elements 3.0.2 using video described as MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, 640 x 480, @ 30 frames per second.
Thanks for any information on this matter.

    SG
Many thanks for the information. I had not run across anyone before claiming to get AVCHD or AVCHD-Lite to work in Premiere Elements 3.0.2. So, the post in question really had me thinking "there is something wrong with this picture".
I will try to get more information from the user to determine what "break through" the user has made versus something else.
    Thanks again.

  • Aperture and AVCHD Lite support

Apple implies on their Aperture 3 features site that AVCHD and AVCHD Lite is supported. See http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/#video/ . Does anyone know if Aperture supports AVCHD Lite for video transfer from a Panasonic DMC-ZS7 to my MacBook Pro?

I bought the Panasonic DMC-ZS7 today.
I was able to use Aperture3 and import still images and motion imagery from my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 into my MBP. I was also able to do this with iPhoto and iMovie.
The camera does not support AVCHD or AVCHD Lite. However, the camera has a user selectable option in the menu to shoot Motion JEPG (.MOV) HD video.
Both the still images and motion imagery look great! I can view the motion images in Aperture3, QuickTIme, or iMovie.
GPS works well with the camera, Aperture3, and iPhoto as well.

  • PE 9 and AVCHD Lite?

Hi - does anyone know if Premiere Elements 9 supports AVCHD Lite files from a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 camera?
I have found some discussions about this format and earlier versions of PE - but nothing on PE 9.
Officially, it doesn't, as far as I can tell - but can that really be true?
    Thanks.

Version 9 does have project presets for AVCHD Lite 1280x720.
You can see how to set up the program for this or any video format in part 1 of my Basic Training for Premiere Elements tutorial series at Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com.
