Does FF 19 for Windows XP keep a history of browsed sites in an index.dat file or similar?

I normally keep the "clear history when FF closes" option, checked. I had one window open with 10-15 tabs & accidentally clicked "close group" which closed the entire window & all tabs & because of the aforementioned option setting, wiped my sessionstore.js file. I looked for a sessionstore.bak file but didn't find one. I want to restore these tabs & since I recently discovered, some software on Windows computers use hidden 'index.dat' files to retain info even though the user deleted personal info in a normal way, want to know if FF 19 (version I had when this happened late yesterday) keeps browsing history in some type of hidden file I can access to retrieve the web sites info I accidentally lost. I searched my 'Documents and Settings' folder for any FF-related files that were modified at or near the time this event took place & found several & copied them to another folder in case one of them might have the info I want. In perusing this forum for answers, I found out about the add-on 'session manager' & installed it immediately, so this won't ever happen again. I also tried an 'undelete' program I have, hoping to find a retrievable copy of 'sessionstore' - nothing was found. I appreciate any assistance one can give regarding knowledge of any hidden file(s) FF keeps in case of emergencies, like this.

Only IE uses index.dat files to store such data.
Firefox stores the bookmarks and the browser history in an SQLite database file named places.sqlite. 
App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder.
You would need a backup of the involved file(s) to restore data that you have deleted by accident. 
Unfortunately Windows XP don't have a way to restore previous versions of files like more recent Windows (Vista and later) versions have.

When you upgraded, itunes should have put a copy of the itunes library database in a folder named *Previous iTunes Libraries* . If you upgraded itunes today it will show as
iTunes Library 2010-02-28.itl

Since I am not sure of your setup, look for the "Previous" folder on both your C: and F: drives.

Hmmm, mine stack up over the pinned icon as you would expect (Win7Pro x64). Is there anything special about the way you're starting up Firefox? Security sandbox? Using any command-line switches?

I've picked up a trojan. Neither norton or superantispyware can find the source. when i delete the "ad" files and the index.dat file in user/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows/cookies and cookies/low they come back the next time i start firefox

The "ad" file names look like they're randomly generated. They look like n6sxx8t5.dat and 038prmz7.txt. I get one for every pop-up ad that is generated. That pop-up ad is generally related to the type of web page i'm on when it triggers. it only occurs once per session. what i don't know is if it is also trying to capture any data i'm entering.
like i said, i've deleted the text and index.dat files, but they keep coming back.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. 
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

VDI 3.1: Sysprep for Windows 7 keeps failing

I am doing a PoC at a customer and for reasons I do not understand the cloning of Windows 7 Enterprise keeps failing. When I apply the system preparation settings and enable cloning, then VirtualBox powers up those clones ... but they seem to be doing nothing, they just sit there. I used "rdesktop" and connected to those sessions (the VRDP port was easy to find via VirtualBox's GUI) and there is just the login mask which is pre-set to the local user I used during the installation from the Windows 7 *.ISO image, but nothing else seems to be happening in there.

Cloning Linux was sooo much easier BTW, it just worked. But Windows is such a pain ...

Did you note and prepare based on the caveat on the Windows 7 from the wiki?Yes, I am aware of that. It's the first thing I did.
Are you joining a domain?Yes. I found the "UnattendedJoin" bit in WAIK and filled in the details but it did not work as described in my earlier posting.
what does your VDI cloning System Preparation File file look like?If Windows 7 sysprepping is working tip top for you then I'd say your XML file is far more interesting? :-) Can you post your's?? Mine is most likely broken and defective anyway, and I don't have it here with me right now (I had to leave it on a server @customer).

And did you prepare anything else inside your Windows 7? e.g. you disabled the Media Player Network Sharing Service as per instructions, you installed the Guest AddOns (for VirtualBox), you used WAIK to generate the "sysprep.xml", you triggered the sysprep from inside Windows ..... Correct? Or did I forget anything?

Quicktime for Windows cannot keep up with HD video

I just bought a new Aiptek GO-HD video camera. It records in H.264 format using .MOV files as the container. I don't know the specifics of the files, but they are 1280x720 and the files run at approximately 2 GB per hour.
The camera came with a decoder to allow Windows Media Player to play back the files, which works OK (the quality is fine, but the controls don't always work). The CODEC is identified as: NewSoft MPEG Video Decoder Filter (H.264/AVC). Windows Media Player shows up using 80% of the dual cores (40% of each).
When I try to play back the files with the current version of Quicktime, the video is a bit choppy. Quicktime shows up using 60% of the dual cores, but appears to use more of one than the other (neither is pegged at 100% though)
The files play back fine on a relatively high end Mac - I'm not sure if the different is that it's the Mac version of QT or that it's higher end hardware.
Two questions:
First - is it a CPU limitation or a Quicktime for Windows limitation?
Second - if I buy Quicktime Pro, will I be able to edit and encode the video without the stuttering?
I'm willing to accept temporary issues as long as I can produce videos that will be playable on the right hardware (or converted to other formats). I might eventually get a Mac Mini if that will work for editing these files.

Movie Properties window of QuickTime Pro shows H.264 but the Movie Inspector windows shows AVC with some garbage characters.
I was able to edit either file (copy/paste) without issue. I also exported a portion of your file using AIC (Mac format) and will test later with other codecs.
H.264 Video is CPU intensive and my 1.4GHz Mac mini couldn't play the file without dropping frames and the fan kicked into high gear.
So you'll need a powerful machine to view the file but an average one could do the editing (as long as you don't mind load noises and dropped frames during playback).
It's a $300 camera that does HD? Amazing.

After downloading Quicktime 7.7.4 for Windows I keep getting four double beeps ever 10-15 sec. When I uninstall the software, the beeping goes away. Any ideas on what is causing this?

You have several thing at play. The first, most likely to cause a crash, and easiest to fix is that you have Safari in the wrong place:
Path: /Users/Rich/Desktop/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
You have the Safari Application on the Desktop but, to work correctly, it must be in the Applications folder :
Path: Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications.
Second, you have some third-party plug-ins or extensions that can cause trouble. Try deactivating DivX---it is known to prevent videos on Apple's web site from working. Also turn off the EverNote extension until you as sure everything is stable. Check for an Evernote update.
See how things go with Safari in the proper place and with extensions turned off. Then turn extensions back on one at a time and test for stability
The fact that you are running Flash 10.3 makes me think you have a newer iMac than covered in this forum. PPC Macs can run no higher than Flash 10.1, so you may be in a forum for models older than yours. Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and see what the processor description reads. If it includes the word "Intel," you should post future questions here:

Java 7 U25 work around does not work for windows 8

I'm working on a java application which uses the statistical software R. This line Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(C:\Program Files\R\R-2.15.1 + "/bin/" + "R CMD BATCH " + "./data/rJava.R"); in the application started throwing an error after the java 7 u25 update, but it was fixed by using the work around setting jdk.lang.Process.allowAmbigousCommands to true. This fix however does not work in windows 8, although the command does not error out with "cannot create process = 2" it just executes the line, but does nothing. But if I typed the command (R CMD BATCH " + "./data/rJava.R) directly into the commandline, it works perfectly. I've tried disabling the work around, and actually using suggested solutions in the release notes (see below), all worked in windows 7, but no success with windows 8. Any suggestions would be great

avancentcisco - Win7 works fine with SSL VPN. But since we all were migrating to Win8, this was of no use to us. So we ditched SSL VPN all together.
IPSec VPN with Cisco VPN Client (version 5.0.07) works absolutely fine on Windows 8. Once you get the set up right, everything works fine (we are using full tunnel) including internet access.

Adobe Reader for Windows RT keeps crashing

I just recently installed the Adobe Reader Touch for the Surface RT I am using. When I try to fill in information on a PDF document (fillable fields), it crashes everytime. I have uninstalled the app numerous times and reinstalled it with the same results each time.
I have created the PDF documents using Adobe XI Pro. I saved them so they have no security. Apparently if you save the original document with security features, the Touch application will not let you fill in any highlighted fields.
Has anyone exprienced this problem?
I am not too computer savy so any help or suggestions would be grealy appreciated.

Can't download plug in for windows media player. Have used download site and it says it worked, but plug in is not showing up on my list of plug ins.

I tried to hear a conference call on a website. Got a message, needed windows media plug in. Checked my plug ins, no windows media. Read tutorial on firefox support. Clicked on download. Got a window that asked for repair or change. Tried repair, then change. Need better directions on how to finish download. Got message download successful, but after closing firefox and reopening, still no plug in for windows media in list of plug ins. Went to site and could not hear conference.
Read support forum. Message about using about:config. Tried this, typed in about: config in start menu, but didn't see anything that looked like I could change to true like message said.
solved by opening internet explorer and going to website and listening to conference call on windows media player. There was a message saying click here if you want to enable media player. Did so, heard conference.
Tried using chrome. Got to hear conference yesterday. Today, there was same message about needing plug in when I tried to follow instructions to get plug in, it was as confusing and useless as firefox. The bottom line is I tried to do everything set forth in firefox's forum suggestions and can't get the windown media plug in to show up in my list of plug ins and can't hear conference calls on firefox.
Chrome did say they were working on getting plug in available at chrome store.
I agree with comments that I was able to go to web sites and hear calls before firefox made an update that removed my windows media plug in. The simple download fix, presumeably from windows, does not work, apparently because firefox can't find the fix. That is not the user's fault, and it looks like windows tried to provide a fix, and firefox won't recognize it.
Bottom line, it is easier to use another browser, than try and get the windows media player plug in installed on firefox. What good is a browser, if you can't hear a call on the website that the browser takes you to? Please make it easy to install the windows media plug in on firefox. Thank you..

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
(1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
(i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
(2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.

CS6 64 bit (for windows) installation keeps telling me to shut down Bridge CS5 which isn't running.

I've checked the Windows 7 Task Manager and Bridge CS5 does not appear. Can someone help with what I'm to do so I can finish the install?

This error occurs when Adobe Bridge is configured to start at login, so it is running in the background.

Getting error code 0x400110020000100b while doing system recovery for windows vista 32 bit.

I attempted to do a system recovery on my Laptop using the included recovery discs and got this error 0x400110020000100B. THe disc looked pretty beat so last week I ordered a new set. Now when I got to put disc 2 in (at 80% complete) I get the same error. I called customer support and he took me through the F9 process to no avail and I've also tried the F11 approach which got me no where. I'm frustrated because I really don;t have the money for a new laptop.
Laptop is a HP Pavilion DV6700.
Any help would be appreciated more than you know.
System is Windows Vista 32 bit

Never have figured out why they do not allow one S/N for both versions, particularly since some folks may have a Windows desktop and a MAC laptop. Unfortunately they do not and you have to purchase a version for each.

ITunes for Windows ignores "Keep last #" of podcasts setting ...

Hi. Using iTunes 7.0.1.8.
I have the following podcast settings set:
- Update podcasts every day
- When new podcasts are available: Do Nothing
- Keep last 5 podcasts
Nevertheless, iTunes keeps all podcasts that I have downloaded. Completely ignoring the setting.
IF this setting is intentionally ignored because I have chosen to manually select podcasts for download, THEN this setting should be "ghosted" (disabled) when the "Do Nothing"setting is turned on.
Either way it seems to be a bug. Anyone else observing this problem?

iTunes podcast management is turning out to be all or nothing. This happens for me also. What I do now is set iTunes to only update when I tell it and delete the episodes after I have listened to them.
